45 Hz noise

I trying to make an acoustic (pressure) measurement using the PXI 4496 and I don't fully understand why my signal looks the way it does. Here is a graph of the time signal with 3 channels and also the power spectrum of the pressure channel.
http://forums.ni.com/ni/attachments/ni/100/1989/1/acoustic_channels_test_FP.png
the white trace is the pressure channel, the red is a IEPE accel. and the green is a disconnected channel and both tranducers have excitation to them. However, neither transducer is seeing any changing phenomena. That is, the sensors are just sitting there and you can see a large ~45 Hz signal on the pressure channel. For this measurement, I'm using a kulite XTE-190 transducer that has a FSO of 100 mV and you can see that I'm getting signal at 25% of the FSO without doing anything. My wiring configuration goes like this. A 4 conductor shielded cable brings the 10V floating DC excitation to the transducer using 2 conductors and the bridge output of the transducer is brought back to my PXI 4496 using the other 2 conductors. Right now I don't have the shielding tied to ground anywhere.

Hi Caz,
As Jason mentioned, it's a good idea to ground
your shield. But only ground it in one place: at the transducer, or at
the device. If the shield is not tied to anything then it is floating
and essentially does not function as a shield anymore.
You
have a point about common mode rejection. It does appear that the 4496
is not rejecting the common mode signals in the excitation signal. I'm
curious about the excitation signal you are using. You said it's a
noisy DC source. Is it stepping? The AC-coupling filter on the 4496 has
a settling time in response to DC steps. If you were to look at an
acquisition on a 4496 during a step it would look like a spike with an
exponential decay curve afterward, kind of like what you have in your
acquisitions. It would be great if you could get a hold of a DC-coupled
instrument to monitor your excitation and your bridge output and post
that so we could take a look at it.
I'm also curioius about your configuration.
1) Is your excitation source floating?
2) Could you draw a diagram showing where you are connecting signals from your bridge
    a) When you have the huge noise in the measurements of the 4496
    b) When you are doing the differential measurement with the 4496
3) What is the DC voltage present on the negative (shell) of your 4496 inputs during these acquisitions?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • USB 6009 thermocouple noise

    I'm using NI-DAQmx 7.5, Labview 7.0, and a USB-6009.
I'm trying to get a more accurate reading from my j-type thermocouple.  It is now distorted with noise and jumps rapidly +/- 20 degrees around room temp without any heat being applied.  When heat is applied, it climbs as it should but with the same variation.  I haven't moved to the labview side of it yet, I'm still trying to get a usable reading in MAX.  I have it wired as a differential input with a floating signal source.  I've installed 10k ohm resistors for bias current return as instructed.  Installing the resistors helped but still leaves me with the readings shown in the attached pic.  I've also tried grounding my USB 6009 with no results.  Please help. john

    thermocouple reading.jpg ‏41 KB

    Hi John,
What you are running into is a problem with the actual voltage resolution of your USB-6009.  This device has 14-bits of resolution over a minimum range of +/- 1V.  That means that the voltage resolution is (1 - (-1))V / (2^14) = 2V / (16384) = 122uV.  While this is an excellent resolution for such a low cost USB device, you will still notice problems when trying to make a thermocouple measurement.  The reason for that is that Thermocouples make a very small output voltage (see image below).
Common thermocouple types have the following response:
K type: 41 microVolts per degree Celsius
J type: 56 microVolts per degree Celsius
T type: 52 microVolts per degree Celsius
There are a few options for ways to get around this limitation.
Good: You could read the signal in as a voltage and then manually convert that voltage into a temperature.  This would be the least accurate method, but it should allow you to average out your signal and then use the Convert Thermocouple Reading.vi to show the voltage as a temperature.
Better: If you want to keep using the USB-6009 to measure thermocouple, what you really need to do is first amplify your signal before you connect it with your device.  This should increase your resolution of the thermocouple allowing you to get more accurate temperature specs.  This will require some more complex programming to properly scale your measurements, but it will give you more accurate readings for relatively little cost.
Best: Opt for getting a USB device that is designed for taking temperature measurements such as the USB-9211A.  This device would give you a voltage resolution of 160mV/2^24 = 9.54 nV!  That's over 12500x the resolution of the USB-6009 that you currently have.
Hopefully the above information helps you better understand what is going on and why.  If you have any other questions feel free to post them here.

    Dear Rathan
The correct Terminal configuration depends on if your power supply is floating or grounded. Please have a look at tabel below.
As to the filter, which type of filter to use depends on the frequency of your signal. If your frequency (or frequencies) is low a lowpass with a cutoff frequency a bit over your frequency would be best. Conversly if your frequency is high a highpass with a lower cutoff frequency would do the job. If you are interested in only a single or small spann of frequencies a bandpass could be used.
You can filter your signal either via a hardware filter before you acquire it via your DAQ, but that would require that you have or can build a hardware filter that fits your needs. Else you can filter the signal in software after you've aquired it. The filters in LabVIEW can be found in the functions palette under Signal Processing -> Filters. I think a butterworth filter would do nicely. You can find an example through the LV Help.
    Best Regards

  • My iphone 4 is not wanting to light up at all ,making noise when getting calls etc. what could be the problem?

I was trying to figure out why there was a cricle with a lock image in it on the top of my phone , so i was going through settings and couldnt find anything that was out of ordinary .so then i was trying to make room for a software update. The only thing i changed was was putting the little on screen help button. Then phone frozen after i was going through settings again to figure out the cricle and lock image on my home page. Then after a cetain amount of time, When screen time went out it wouldnt let me turn back on screen. But it will make noises from calls and texts and ect still when they come in. But it will not light up when calls or texts come through or notifications. It wont light up when i try to unlock it and or change the volume settings. My screen is blank and black but is still making sounds as if it was still on and working with no picture. Front camera still takes pictures when you hold down top and middle buttons but still not image on screen. Is there any suggestions that i can do myself or do you think i need to take it in myself to have it fixed?
    Thank you so much,

  • IPhone 5 voice call quality fade in and out. Noise Cancellation interference?

I've been having this huge problem with the iPhone5. The evidence i've collected seems to indicate this is a problem with all iPhone5's.
On calls in certain places both indoors and outdoors, the callers voices over the iPhone5 fade in and out. Their voices occasionally completely fade completely away, and only come back momentarily. The low volume for 50% of the time forces me to raise the volume, but raising the volume does not help because when the voice does come back, the volume is too loud for my ears.
I went back to the Apple store and they are not able to help me. They suggested a clean restore, which I did. They offered to replace the phone, which I did, but it is the same problem.
    - iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S, the fading does not occur. I make the call to the same voice mail system I have, and the sounds from the other side are consistently the same volume for the 4S, but fades in and out for the 5.
    - I connected up a 8mm jack between my iPhone 5 and my mac in an attempt to record this problem. In that instance, the sounds from the voice mail DO NOT fade in and out. I did find out that the dynamic range on the iPhone 5 is MUCH greater than that of the iPhone 4S, for some strange reason.
    - When I hold the phone up to my ear, the fading in and out does occur, but it is less noticeable. But it's still there.
    - When I leave my work area the problem goes away. However, because the iPhone 4S on the same AT&T service does not have this problem, this leads me to believe it's NOT a lack of transmission power from the AT&T cell tower. Rather, it is a reception issue at the iPhone5 side.
    - I turned off LTE, data and then made the calls. Same issue.
I use this phone to make 60 minute calls for conference calls frequently. I cannot use it. Please advise. I am seriously considering returning this phone. Except i've sold my old iPhone 4 already. I'm in a bad place. Please help.
Here's another post of a fellow with the same exact problem.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1456404
Apple, please look into this. I believe this is a problem with the noise cancellation software.

I've got an update on this problem with fading volume. I've isolated it to the set volume on the phone for voice calls when using headphones. When the headphone volume is set between 1 and 6 (out of 16 squares) the callers volume will consistently fade in and out. The fading which is normal to zero volume at 2-5 Hz is serious enough that normal conversation is impossible.  When the volume is raised above 6/16 then the callers voice stabilize and I can hear all their words again. Unfortunately, at 6/16 volume their voices are too loud for the headphones.
Furthermore, when headphones are plugged in, and I initial a call after the iphone5 was idle for several minutes, the first dial tone has preceded by a very loud pop an the tone, as though there was too much pressure (charge) that was dissipated all at once.
    Other details:
    - I used 3 different earphones, iPhone 4 headphones, altec earphones, an the new iPhone 5 earbuds. Same.
    - I turned on and off lte, data, Bluetooth, wifi. Problem persists unaffected.
    - when switching to iPhones earpiece and mic, the fading is gone.
    - I have 3 out of 5 bars where I teste this, in the city outside and on hwy 5 in central California. Same symptoms in all places I've tested.
    - I have exchanged my phone at the apple store. Same issue with both iPhones an I suspect all ipjone5s.
    - the ipjone4s does NOT have this problem when the volume is set lower. I can tell that the iPhone 5 must have a new audio filter to make the sounds have larger dynamic range. I liked the 4s better, because it is easier on the ears!

  • Iphone 5s Echo and Swoosh noises during active call

    Hello All,
I purchased a new iphone 5s around a month back and I consistently get echoes of my own voice and swoosh noises during call. This happens irrespective if I make the call or an incoming call is answered, from any location like my room and on the street (No tunnels, elevators, etc). I originally thought it was because I receive notifications like texts or if my cheek touches the display, but I hear this noises and echoes even if I am on headphone (both apple and other branded headphones). Is this is a known issue, if so how do I resolve it ?
    Thanks

  • I dropped my computer, it made the 3-beep "RAM is screwed" noises, but it seems to be working fine now. What should I do?

I'm bad at computers so be patient with me ... I dropped my 2.5 year old MacBook Pro from about waist height onto a concrete floor (I know!). Worst feeling in the world, especially after I had the hard drive replaced a couple weeks ago. Now the case has a little dent on the corner but no other visible damage. After I dropped it it started doing the "beep beep beep -- pause -- beep beep beep" noise, which after some googling I see is to do with something wrong with the RAM. I powered off and restarted it, and after the restart it seems to have nothing wrong with it; turned on fine, screen is fine, no error messages, no slower than usual. I checked the memory stuff in System Report and it says both sticks are OK. I also ran the "verify disk" thing to check my hard drive and got no errors.
Can somebody tell me what the odds are of this computer surviving for the next couple months? I would take it to an Apple store, but this is complicated by me being in Rwanda, which means getting my computer fixed or even looked at is highly unlikely. I've got a friend coming to visit in a week and she could just buy me a new computer and bring it over, but I really, really don't want to have to buy a new one if this one's going to work. On the other hand, I'm terrified that this one is going to up and die on me before I get back to the US in August. Still, it seems to be working OK -- but is it going to die out of nowhere? Would you buy a new computer, if it were you? Does anybody have any ideas about what might happen to this one over the next few weeks? Thanks!

    venicespent,
Boot into your Mavericks Recovery partition by hold down the command and R keys whilst booting. You'll see a screen that looks like this:
Click on the Disk Utility item to open Disk Utility. You should see your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've changed it) in the column on the left of the screen. Select your boot partition and click on the "Verify" button. Let your Mac do it's thing - if you get green text telling you that everything seems to be OK, then your disk should not be damaged. If, however, you get red text telling you that the disk needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button. If the disk can be repaired, you should be good to go. If the disk cannot be repaired then the drive is damaged.
But before you do anything, make certain that you have backups!!!

I have applied EFI update 1.8 but replaced my drive (the drive was bad) a couple of months ago.
The drive is making again the wakeup noise! (EFI 1.8 was supposed to fix that)
I am not certain that the return of the noise is related to the drive change but it looks so.
Any way to remove the noise. Does the superdrive need a firmware update? If yes how do you do it (as the EFI change is not accepted anymore)?

Same here actually. It worked for a bit though.

  • Ultrabook/Notebook freezing and making loud buzzing noise

I just received via UPS a HP Pavilion 11 x2 PC 11-h010nr for my daughter for Christmas.  I decided to let her open it as her one before Christmas present and I am glad I did.  She went into xbox music to listen to her new beats audio sound.  On about the 3rd song the loudest annoying buzzing noise came out of the screen portion and the screen was frozen (she had it detached from the keyboard).  She hit the power button and the noise stopped.  She got back into xbox music and about the 2nd song this time it did it again.  She started to cry and very upset because she thought it was broke and would take a very long time for us to get it fixed and she gets a replacement.  Needless to say her Christmas has just turned into a really bad Christmas.  Also today I brought the notebook with me to work to see if the problem continues and as I was putting the song on Pause/Play the noise occured, the screen did not freeze but the noise did occur.
