5D Mark iii AF system - necessary for hobbyist photographer?

I take pictures of just about everything, including running/playing children. My biggest complaint about my current camera (a high-end point-and-shoot. Definitely time to upgrade!) is that it doesn't focus well on moving subjects, nor does it focus well in low-light conditions (or do anything in low-light conditions, really). I would like to purchase the 6D, but if it's going to give me trouble every time I try to focus on moving people, then it's not worth 2000 dollars. The 5D Mark iii apparently has amazing AF but, honestly, it almost seems overwhelming to me. My choices are a crippled AF or a complicated AF, and I'm not sure what to do. As a hobbyist photographer who often shoots moving subjects, will the 6D be adequate? Or should I buy the 5D Mark iii and just plan on spending a good amount of time with the instruction manual?

Wow, thanks for your advice, everyone! And you're right; money doesn't buy skill so I shouldn't waste an extra thousand as an attempt to make up for my weaknesses.
My camera is essentially attached to my hip; I take it everywhere and shoot anything that interests me at the time. However, I can pinpoint two conditions in which I spend the most time shooting. I photograph a LOT of events, maybe half of which are indoors with varying lighting conditions. I also enjoy taking pictures at night in the city - people and stationary objects/settings. I currently use manual focus for night and low-light indoor conditions (which is frustratingly difficult when people are moving), and I use a tripod and long exposures for most of my night pictures (which is limiting). Even then, the pictures rarely turn out as sharp and vivid as I would like. The thought of a camera that can produce better quality images in the dark or low-light AND that can AUTO focus in said conditions sounds marvelous, and that's the reason I'm aiming for full frame. It sounds like some of the crop sensor cameras may be better than the 6D for all the events I photograph, given their AF capabilities, but I'm okay with sacrificing some AF (within reason) and some cash for quality night and low-light shots. Maybe I'm wrong in thinking that full frame is necessary for all this though? I just read reviews and saw sample images and was impressed with the pictures coming out of full frame cameras in low-light and night conditions. I don't have hands-on experience with crop sensor cameras though, so I may be underestimating them. Please correct me if I am wrong in any of my assumptions!
Anyway, given my desire for nice low-light/night performance and AF performance with moving subjects at events, the 5D Mark iii is tempting. However, from what I've read and from what you all have told me, it sounds like the 6D will be a good fit for me while the 5D Mark iii is probably excessive. You asked about my budget. I have saved up 6,000, which is a lot, but perhaps not so much when considering that I currently own no photo equipment other than my point-and-shoot and my flimsy tripod, haha.

  • Focus problems with Canon 1D Mark III

I have been having problems with my 1D Mark III, it take an unusually long time to focus.  The problem is especially prevalent indoors.  I am using a Canon 24 to 70 IS lens.

I have had the camera since it first came out, however I also aready had a Canon 20D at the time.  I seemed to do better with the 20D.  I recently bought a Canon 7D and it focuses much faster.  I am very displeased with the 1D Mark III.
I am an experienced photographer, photography is a passion I have studied and pursued.  The 20D was my first DSLR, prior to that I shot with a Nikon 2020 film camera.
The problem with the 1D Mark III is that it takes an unusually long time to autofocus.  Due to this, I usually relied on the 20D.  When I bought the 7D I retired the 20D and paired the new camera with he 1D for gigs (weddings, parties etc.).  It is frustrating to attempt shots with the camera and have subjects wait for me to shoot.

  • Canon 5D Mark III Raw Files Not Viewable in Finder for Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    System specs:
Computer: Mid 2008 Mac Pro - Dual Quad Core
OS: OS X 10.6.8 (includes the most recent Digital Camera Raw Updates)
    Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
    Problem:
Finder can not preview the thumbnails from this camera.  While not that big of a deal (I can use Lightroom, Bridge, etc to view these) it is a bit of an annoyance when transfering files around from one volume to another.
According to this Apple support page -   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US   -  I may need to update iPhoto, in order for the Digital Camera Raw Updates to work (specifically 3.12 from last year that addressd the 5D3's raw files).
As a pro photographer, I have ZERO use for iPhoto.  But, I would be willing to spend the $15 for the newest version of iPhoto, if I knew that would solve the Finder thumbnail problem.
I would love a definitive answer, without having to call Apple and paying the "per-incident support fee."

I manually installed the latest RAW update (3.13 I think - for 10.6.8) .... worked for me.
    (auto-update didn't do **** about raw update)
    now aperture and os-x (10.6.8) show the 5dmk3 raw's.

Which operating system are you using?
Have you tried Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6 to get either camera raw 8.3 or 8.7.1, which should enable photoshop cs6 to open the canon 5D Mark III files.
(version of camera raw depends on your operating system)
If that doesn't work try one of the following camera raw plugin installers:
    Camera raw 8.7.1 plugin
    https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html
If you have windows xp or vista or mac os x snow leopard (10.6.8), then you'll have to use the camera raw 8.3 plugin installer:

  • Photoshop Elements Plug-in for Canon 5D Mark III

I just got a new Canon 5D Mark III camera.  I can not open RAW files in Photoshop Elements 7.  I previously had a nikon D200 and was able to read RAW files after I downloaded plugin.  What plugin do I need to download for the Canon.  Can't seem to find one.

Update to PSE12 or use Canon DPP that came with your camera disk. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.2
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.2
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Any idea when Lightroom 4 will have support for the new Canon 5D Mark III?

I have a new Canon 5D Mark III.  When can we expect support for this camera in Lightroom 4?

It's already in the DNG converter that's posted along with ACR 6.7 Beta.  That indicates probably the next version.

It doesn't appear that it is available yet.  You will want to utilize Canon's software for now.  I would recommend continuing to review http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html as it has a list of all supported and soon to be supported cameras with Camera RAW.

  • HT3825 How to view RAW from Canon 5D mark III for OS 10.6

To 'Preview' RAW files from Canon 5D mark III, it is known that you need to install the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 , but it can only be used with iphoto 9, which in turn only work in OS 10.7, so there is no way for 10.6 users to 'Preview' the RAW files? Please help if you no any other ways, thank you!

  • SRaw support for Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

I just shot some images in sRaw and was suprised to find the "unsupported image format" message...
I'm using Ap2, 10.5.2 and the latest graphics libraries...
Is this not supported or am I experiencing a unique problem?
I realize the convert to DNG is a workaround - but I'd rather not...

When the 1D Mark III came out (first with sRaw), I saw someone at dpreview (a sports photographer) saying that for the sort of work he did, the resolution wasn't important, but that it would be valuable to be able to send a smaller file wirelessly (using the WFT-1 or whatever it is called) to his editor. The smaller file size would speed up transfers.
On a 1Ds Mark III, the 5MP sRaw seems more useful to me, as it is more than enough for casual shooting. Though, why you would bring a 1DsIII for casual shooting is beyond me.

  • Back button focusing for 5d Mark III. How do I set it up?

How do I set up Back Button focusing on my new 5D Mark III.  Can't find instructions in Canon supplied manual or third-party book.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's really easy because it's mostly already set up... The AF-On button on the back of the camera already starts and stops AF.
To set up true BBF technique, you turn off the AF function at the shutter button. I believe it's Custom Function IV, 1:  Opertaion/Others.... where you make button assignments.  Navigate to the shutter button icon and press "set" to enter the options for that... change to the center one "metering start" and press "set" again. Done.
Optionally you can swap the function of the AF-On and "*" (AE Lock) buttons, using the same button assignment tool.
