5D Mark III firmware suggestions

Hello,
Could Canon team give us their positions on these suggestions please ?
1) The Auto ISO is far from being convenient.
- Could we specify the min shutter speed instead of being limited to a restricted number of predefined values ?
- When shutter speed is set to "auto", could we set a priority as regards the one-over-the-focal-length rule thanks to a slider ? This is exactly what is so WELL done for some autofocus settings, so why not extend it to the "auto" value ?
2) When we switch the lens to manual focus, could you make the focus grid and red blinking vanish ?
3) Could you display the focal length on the rear LCD when reviewing a picture ? Presently, only aperture/speed/ISO are displayed when you click on "Info".
4) This last one might sound like a gadget... Would it possible when pressing the M-Fn button (or other) to set the focus to the hyperfocal ? Nowadays, there are no more indications for this on the lens barrel. And it is so useful for street photography and landscape. The camera knows the focal length and the current aperture. There are tables that give the relation between aperture, focal length and hyperfocal (as simple as a rule of thumb). So this should work, no ?
Maybe I am alone here to think that this would be welcome additions (#1 top priority) and will never be heard by Canon's dev team... But I would really appreciate having their answers written down here. Thanks for your consideration on this matter.
Cheers,
Yoms

We agree with all of these suggestions.
And we will also add the following suggestion than CAN be implemented via Firmware Update.
PLEASE CANON consider these requests, and forward them to the right department:
1- Could we enable AF points blinking in red even when the sccene is light?
Currently they only blink red when the scene is dark, even if you set the View Finder to always be illuminated.
This is VERY useful because in lot of situations the black overlay AF points is not very easy to see in light scenes.
2- If possible: also make them more visible (blinking red) in AI Servo, because they're currently hard to follow in lot of situations.
3- Could we assign different functions to the RATE button? It's currently almost a waste of button for only a couple of functions.
4- Please implement a "Hot / Sutck Pixels" REMAPPING function to let the user tell the camera to hide these deffective pixels in stills and video mode.
This is ESSENTIAL in digital cameras (every sensor has deffective pixels, most of them "mapped" in factory to be hidden, but not all). Digital sensors may even show more hot/stuck pixels over time. It could work in similar way than the "Dust delete data"
5- We expect an Option for CLEAN 4:2:2 HDMI output as promised by Canon, besides the current Full HD HDMI output option with shooting information, which is essential for using external monitors.
6- PLEASE, could Canon implement PEAKING in Video mode? The 5D Mark III is a $3,000+ camera.
There are currently cameras by other manufacturers with Peaking, 1080p60 for less than $1,000...
The 5D Mark III had strong advertised aimed towards the video market, yet it doesn't have this basic feature for filmmaking & video.
7- Please, could Canon improve the ALL-I mode?
It delivers poor quality (considering the BIG memory space required) when there are low motion scenes, showing more macro blocking than IPB and a noticeable "fizzy" noise, even at Low ISO.
8- Please, improve the Sharpness algorithm in Video mode, to get SHARPER images when setting it higher than zero.
Currently it produces noticeable halos, making it almost unusable for professional work.
The list could be longer, but all these improvements are VERY important and CAN be made via firmare update and would make the 5D Mark III more competitive and a higher value.
Thank you very much Canon!
We really hope you listent to your customers.

  • Updating 5D Mark III firmware

I am trying to update my 5D Mark III firmware. The download is on the CF card but the camera cannot read it. What have i done wrong?  I use an Apple iMac

When you download the new firmware, you should get a file named "eos5d3-v121-mac.dmg" on your hard drive (probably in your downloads folder.)
Open "Finder" on your Mac and double click that file to mount the disk-image (.dmg) file.
This will open a Finder window showing the contents of that .dmg file.  You will notice two things:
    1)  A file named:  5D300121.FIR
    2)  A folder named:  update-procedure-pdf
The folder contains PDF documents with instructions in several languages.
All you really need to do is copy the ".FIR" file to your memory card.  The 5D300121.FIR should be placed in the top-level directory on the card (do not place it in a sub-folder.)
Eject the card from your Mac.
Insert the card into your camera.
    Power up the camera.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULLY CHARGED BATTTERY (never attempt an update on a battery that's near empty).
Press the "Menu" button on the camera.
Use the front wheel to scroll to SET UP page 4 (gold "wrench" icon ... 4th page).
Use the rear dial to scroll down to the 4th row.  This will show your current firmware version.
    Press the "Set" button.
It will show the current version with a "Cancel" and "Ok" option.  Click "Ok" to proceed.
It will check the memory cards for files in the top-level directory ending with ".FIR" and display your choices.
Since you'll only have one .FIR file, it should show an entry for "Cardx: 5D300121.FIR"
Highlight that firmware and press "Set"
It will confirm one last time that you want to upgrade from your current firmware to the new firmware.  When you are ready, select "Ok" to proceed.
It will now begin the update.  It will display a progress graph.
It will give you a message with explicit instructions to not touch any buttons or switches until it is finished.
It will tell you it is done.
Canon recommends you now POWER OFF the camera and...
    EJECT THE BATTERY.
    Wait 2 full seconds.
    Re-insert the battery.
    Power up the camera.
    You're done!
That last bit about removing the battery is to force the camera to completely boot from firmware.  The power swtich is really a soft switch... it doesn't technically deprive the camera of power.  "technically" your camera is in a kind of power-saving sleep state.... except it will not be awakened by accidentally pressing a button like a true "sleep" state.  That's why they tell you to remove and then re-insert the battery.

  • EOS 5D Mark III Firmware Update: Clean HDMI Output and AF Improvements Explained

Canon has released an important firmware upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark III that will undoubtedly benefit DSLR cinematographers and still shooters alike. The 1.2.1 update enables the camera to record clean, uncompressed digital video data (YCbCr 4:2:2 8 bit) with encoded time code over the HDMI output, while simultaneously displaying video on the rear LCD and recording internally to CF or SD cards. This adds an enormous amount of flexibility to what is already one of the world’s top DSLR camera choices.

  • Canon 5D Mark III firmware wishlist/feature request.

    Auto ISO one-touch Custom Control:
As a photographer my niche is in child and pet portraits.  So I shoot Manual and fix my exposure at 1/500 shutter speed and f/2.8 aperture with Auto ISO.  The SET->ISO custom control beautifully allows me to do exposure compensation in ISO because it only takes 3 clicks of the Main Dial to add 1-stop EV.  But there is no quick way to turn Auto ISO back on.
For example, if Auto ISO is reading ISO-1600 it only takes 3 clicks to get ISO-3200 using the Main Dial and SET->ISO Custom Control.  But it takes 17 clicks of the Main Dial with the top ISO button to turn Auto ISO back on. [Note: Auto ISO cannot be set with SET->ISO]
I am proposing a Custom Control for one-touch Auto ISO to provide a very fast and easy way to switch to Auto ISO.
This functionality could be included in the existing SET->ISO Custom Control:
    1) Holding SET and turning the Main Dial selects ISO. [Current functionality]
    2) Pressing SET selects Auto ISO
If this dual context in buttons is not possible then the Custom Control options could be any/all of:
    1) AF-ON -> Auto ISO
    2) * -> Auto ISO
    3) Start/Stop -> Auto ISO [I think a lot of action photographers aren't using LiveView]
    Thank you for your consideration.
    -DS
Others all welcome to add their own wishlist.

please add exposure compensation when in full manual mode with autoISO enabled.
for example I set a desired aperture for depth of field and a desired speed to freeze movements and there heavily changing light conditions on a location with a lot of action - i will just use autoISO. so one scene might be evenly exposed, but when i turn around i have a heavily backlit person. so it would be super-practical if i could just overexpose by a stop or two via the back dial. if i would adjust the ISO the same problem as DeckardSolos arises.
    apparently nikons have that feature.
edit - second request: enable main dial image scroll in review mode
i take a shot  with image review enabled. naturally i review my image and often would like to compare it to the image i took just before. but i cant just scroll back with the main dial. i have to press play to get in "playback mode" and only then the dial will work. it would be very practical if the image pops up automatically for review and i could compare it straightaway to others.

  • D1 Mark III firmware 1.3.2, Using EOS utility Liveview.

I cannot get the computer screen shutter button to take the photo. I can get the preview to come up but then I have to close it and physically push the shutter. Also when I try to use fast view a box pops up saying it is bussy. The instructions say you should be able to do this from the computer. Using EOS utility. Any help would be appreciated, solutions would be better.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for the many comments, I turn on the computer, turn on the camera using the AC adapter. I then plug the USB cord into the computer. The computer recognizes the camera and the EOS first screen comes up asking “what do you want to do”, I click operate “camera”. Then up comes what I call the EOS screen its about 3 inches wide, has camera settings on top and you work your way down to three choices live view, test screen and something else. I click on live view and the camera mirror locks up and I get the image on the computer screen, in real time. I then do my focus adjustment,, set my shutter, and f stop via the computer. That where the computer assist seems to stop. Yes, I do know that I have to close the live view. I then try to use what looks like a shutter button on the computer screen and nothing happens. I can click the shutter manually and two things happen. I have registered Photoshop to receive the photos. Photoshop which is already open, received the new image as a jpg. The second thing that happens is the a small “screen” which had the same photo as photoshop opens, this is the screen that open if you have no project/program registered. I cannot make the camera function (take a photo) via the computer. Has any one gotten their computer to take the photo or do you have to push the shutter manually?   You mengtioned normal remote shooting, is that different that using live view?

  • Lightroom 4.2 will not import from Canon 5D Mark III

When trying to import photos from my Canon 5D Mark III into Lightroom 4.2, the import usually freezes up at some arbitrary point.  It will either crash lightroom altogether, or it will have a message saying "could not import all files, files could not be read."  (something along those lines.)
I am using a 1 year old iMac with a 1 TB HD.  I import directly onto that hard drive.  Lightroom has never had an issue importing.  My previous camera was a Canon EOS T1i.  The problems started when I purchased my 5D Mark III.  Images from my T1i, in fact, still import fine with no issues.  I am running OS X version 10.7.5.  My compact flash card is brand new, a Lexar 1000x.  This question/issue may have been answered elsewhere, and if so I apologize, for i could not locate it.  I have seen some suggesting it may be a hard drive issue, however, the evidence points to the 5D Mark III not playing well with LR 4.2.  (T1i images still import fine.)

Here's a post concerning 5D MKIII file corruption, which may also be due to a camera malfucntion. Yes, there could be something wrong with your camera.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4882852#4882852
    SUGGESTION:
Install the Canon EOS Utility that came with your camera. Also check for an updated version of the EOS Utility after the install. You need to install from the CD first before you can install any updates.
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_iii#Driver sAndSoftware
If the EOS Utility can download the CR2 files to your hard drive, then your camera is not defective.

  • Corrupted Images from Canon 5D Mark iii

Hey guys... I'm new to forum with this being my first post. I have been shooting for a few years now and have never encountered this issue. I'm not finding any help either on the web as hot to resolve this issue either.
When my Hoodman Steel 32GB CF card is in the card slot on the camera, the images look fine in preview mode. When I transfer them to my hard drive and look at the thumbnails on my Mac cpu the images look fine. It's when I try and open them with Camera Raw, Photoshop, Lightroom or any other photo editing software do they end up looking corrupted. Here are a couple of screenshots of how they are looking upon importing.
Any help to recover these images would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and I look forward to sharing photography stories and shots in the future.

    Ryan,
I imagine those are lost.  The CF card looks like it is corrupted.  I never heard of or have used that brand of CF card so I have no idea of its quality.
I suggest you get Sandisk or Lexar.  Also format it before each important shoot each time.  I also prefer 16GB cards.
It is possibile your computer did the damage so you might try a different computer.  Showing a photo on the camera's LCD monitor is no indicatition.
Thanks for the comments... I was actually able to retrieve them. I had recently updated to Yosemite and low and behold, that apparently was the culprit. I downloaded the new EOS 3 Utility that is reported to work with Yosemite and transfered the images straight out of my camera to my hard drive. Once I opened those images in Camera Raw everything checked out just fine. I'm guessing my card reader isn't compatible with Yosemite. Thanks again for responding.

  • Canon 5D Mark iii RAW images coming in muted

I am shooting on a 5D Mark iii but the images are coming off the camera and into Lightroom 4 muted.  I shoot in RAW and when I load them into Lightroom they initially look good but then after it looks like they process for a second they all become muted.  Any suggestions?  Is this a software thing? I know that images right off the camera for this equipment should be much better.

That's normal Lightroom and third party software behavior. Basically, what you see in the back of your camera LCD screen and when first imported into LR is the embeded JPG of your RAW file. It's a embeded JPG with all the effects, saturation, sharpeness, and many other settings; thus it looks "good". Then LR will give you the "real" version of of your RAW image in which a little lack of contrast, a little wash out, dull and muted. However, if you know how to use LR, you can process your RAW to look even better than the JPG.
Some photographer will disable most of the in-camera setting, lower contrast and saturation to make the JPG photo as close to the RAW as possible in oder to maximize the camera dynamic range.

  • 5d mark III download problem

    Hi,
I'm having problems downloading images from a 5d mark III to Lightroom. I'm shooting raw CR2 format. When the camera is connected to the computer, a handful of files download, then an error message appears saying the remaining files can't be read.
I'm on a macbook pro with the latest OS. The canon firmware is 1.1.2, Lightroom ver. 4.2.
The same images download to the computer fine, via a card reader. When the camera is connected to an older macbook, the download is also problem free.
    Any ideas gratefully recieved.
    Paul Thompson

I've downloaded thousands of pictures using a direct USB port camera connection from Canon 300D, 600D, 5D MKII, and PowerShot A630 cameras without a single lost or corrupted image file, and the transfer speed is faster than a SanDisk USB2 and current HP System built-in card reader.
I can't speak for Mac OS systems, but Windows 2000, XP, and 7 OS systems have always recognized my cameras and download my images without a hitch.
One possible cause of Paul's error message is that the camera battery started to run low during the LR file transfer. Make sure the battery charge level is near 'Full' before downloading images.

  • I tested my new Canon 5D Mark iii with my 85 1.2 L lens. The images look terrible! What gives?

I just purchased a new Canon 5D Mark iii body. It is replacing my 1Ds Mark ii. I tested it with my 85 1.2 L series lens. I took the RAW images into Capture One 7 to look at them. I was highly disturbed at what I saw. The quality was no where near my Canon 1Ds Mark ii. The images seemed somewhat soft even after applying a consderable amount of sharpening. They also looked flat and lifeless, even after pumping the contrast and adding Clarity. All in all they looked terrible! I must have something wrong, as I have read countless times that the new chip gives incredible results.
When first attempting to set up my camera I set it to Adobe RGB and for RAW images only. I noticed that you seemed forced into deciding on a specific "Picture Style". I left it on the default settting of "Standard". Should that effect my RAW files, or is that bypassed altogether when shooting RAW? I noticed that in "Standard" mode that some in camera sharpening was applied to the files. Is that my problem? Should that be turned down to zero, as I would normally do all my sharpening afterward either in Capture One 7 or other software. I shot all my test images with fast shutter speeds so that is not the issue. This lens is in perfect condition and has always produced incredibly sharp contrasty images. What on earth could be wrong? Any suggestions? I am a professional shooter for the last 20 years, so this is really perplexing me! Help!!!

    Hi Corey,
Picture styles are ONLY applied to JPEG images or video.  They are never applied to RAW.  Canon will "tag" the meta-data of the image indicating picture style choices so that desktop processing software that understands those choices can apply it after-the-fact.  But the point of "RAW" is that the camera will not perform any change to the image which would result in a loss of original data.
As for the soft focus... the good news there is probably nothing wrong with your camera or your lens.  It probably just needs a slight focus calibration adjustment (you don't even need to send it in for this.)
The camera sensor is analogous to a movie screen.  If the image is blurry... it's not the movie screen... it's the movie projector (or the focus).  However... keeping with that analogy... suppose we focused the image perfectly... but then moved the project a foot closer to the screen.  The result would be a slightly out-of-focus image even though there is actually nothing wrong with the projector.
The phase detect focus sensors are on the floor of your camera.  When the reflex mirror is down, some light is bounced down into those sensors to focus the image.  The distance to the AF sensors vs. the distance to the real sensor is supposed to be calibrated to match... but it's actually possible for the AF sensors to think the image is focused when it's really slightly out of focus on the sensor.  For this reason, your camera has auto-focus micro-adjustment capability -- in other words this is something you can test and tune yourself.  The REASON you might do it yourself is because it turns out it can be different for every lens (even two EF 85mm f/1.2L lenses in a row might have slightly different focus).  This adjustment is only available on the mid-range and pro bodies -- it's part of the reason you buy a premium body.  The camera can actually remember the AF adjustment for each lens uniquely.
    See this article:  http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/12/this-lens-is-soft-and-other-myths
    Or this article:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/are_your_pictures_out_of_focus.shtml
BTW, to test the lens, I'd suggest getting a focus calibration target.  You want controlled conditions when you do this -- don't shoot typical everday subjects because it wont be precise enough.
I use a DataColor Spyder "LensCal".   The LensAlign products are also popular.

  • Bringing in 5D mark iii files via Log & Transfer in FCP 7.0.3?

    Hello-
Running FCP 7.0.3 on Duo Quad Core Mac Pro, 10.6 OS.
Just shot some lovely stuff with new 5D mark iii and hoping to use FCP log and transfer tool to bring it in.  (Footage is part of a Canon HDSLR-shot project and have succesfully brought in 5D, 7D, T2i & T3i  - with hack -  footage thru L&T.
Per Canon's mark iii product page, downloaded the latest and greatest EOS plug-in -
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5d_...
After installing, attempted to open files in L&T and after a couple of mintues of spinning circle action (that status meter in bet/ browser & queue) the FCP app crashed.
Called Canon this AM.  They're claiming latest L&T plug-in will only work if you're targeting files off a device (ie off original cards) or a virtual drive.  Also said that's been true of previous Canon HDSLR model's footage - 5D ii, 7D, etc. Which totally wasn't my experience - for last 2 years been transferring full contents off cards (keeping folder structure intact) onto external drives and opening successfully in L&T from those.  But that's another story.
Anyway, still have the cards around so tried to bring in off the original cards, via FW card reader device, in L&T and still no luck. Again, crashed the app.
Also opened the card in Canon's image browser app - does recognize/import the footage but oddly can't read any of the metadata for the clips.
Called Canon again and they didn't have any answers;  suggested I reach out to Apple.
Footage itself doesn't seem to be corrupt in any way.  Have opened in Quicktime, MPEG Streamclip.
Please, if anybody has any ideas, would love to hear them.
Ideal is to continue to use the L&T too for this workflow.
    Getting worried, Nick.
