7.2 upgrade breaks iTunes link to music source files

after upgrading to 7.2, itunes lost connection with all my music source files.
ya know, i got exlamation marks on ALL my tracks....
tried "keeping it organized" on and off, tried changing "music folder location", new prefs, choosing a new library on startup [option] but nothing worked.
i cannot play any of my songs [external drive].
weirdly enough, just a few songs can play, out of thousands....
so basically, i got all my music files, but itunes cannot play them.
great.
what other ways can i "link" the source files back to my iTunes library?

had all iTunes folder copied to another drive (internal-not operating sys drv) to alleviate a space problem on my main drive. (operating sys drive)
updated to 7.2.
panicked at not being able to get iTunes to "see" new location of all stuff.
read all horror stories of how apple dose not seem to give a tish any more about how bad its software works.
realized that iTunes created an empty "replacement" folder on the one that I had just moved from.(operating sys drive)
tried to import files to the "new" empty iTunes folder.
iTunes only lets you "import" one song at a time. (really stupid move apple!)
then tried the "add to library" function.
this worked for 1 song.
then I found that I could use "add to library" for multiple selected songs.
then I tried a folder.
this worked also.
then I tried it with the entire iTunes Music folder. this brought everything in just fine.
now I had to get back my playlists.
I tried "import..." and selected the iTunes library document. it told me that it wasn't a validly exported document and would not work.
then I tried "import..." for the iTunes Library.xml document.
this succeeded in brining in all song folders as playlists and also contained all my previously created playlists and smart playlists.
In an effort to solve my original problem (overcrowding my operating sys drive) I ran this procedure on the copy of the iTunes folder that I had made on the other drive (internal-not operating sys drv).
it worked.
I now had two identical iTunes collections on two different drives.
BUT...
on further inspection I found that the files I had originally moved to the other drive (internal-not operating sys drv) were the only ones that exist and the ones that show up in the "recreated" itunes folder (operating sys drive) were just referencing the "real" files.
also I hooked up my "vid pod" and everything is working just fine with everything.
recap.
dont panic.
find the folder with all your stuff.
use "add to library" to make iTunes "see" all your stuff.
check the iTunes Library.xml document and look for any evidence of your lists.
use "import..." for the iTunes Library.xml document.

  • After upgrading recently I got this message: "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." The music/video files are still on my MacBook Pro.  Is it because I'm still on 10.5.8?  How do I fix this?

For your reference I’m using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8.  Several weeks ago on a Monday I received an upgrade for iTunes. When Tuesday arrived I attempted to log in so that I could download the latest freebie song(s).  I was met w/this message: “The file ‘iTunes Library.itl’ cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.”
The music/video files are still on my Mac (I’ve verified that via Searchlight), but I’m unable to open the program.  Since I know that 10.5.8 is rapidly becoming prehistoric, could it be that the newest iTunes isn’t compatible w/this particular OS?  I’d like to switch up, but understand that the newest OS won’t work on a Mac of this vintage (6 years old).  In addition, my Adobe products (all CS2) won’t work w/anything newer than 10.5.8, so I’m reluctant to go to a newer OS (I just can’t afford the Adobe upgrade $$$ @ this point).
Is there any way to get a download of an “old” iTunes version?  If there were, I’d simply refuse any future upgrades until my personal economy allows me to stop working as if it were 2006.  Please advise, somebody!

I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes.  You make it sound like it was sent to you.  At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it.  However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible.  iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer.  So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message.  One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version.  Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers.  The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

  • Upgrade to iTunes 8 and Music Vanished!

I cursory search didn't find anyone else with this problem. However, I don't think I can be the only one...
I upgraded to iTunes 8 on my MacBook without issue. I upgraded to iTunes 8 on my iMac and most of my library vanished. Gone. Arrrrgh. I carefully tested iTunes 8 on my MacBook before upgrading my iMac - which holds my rather extensive 12K+ file library on an external drive.
In iTunes I select my "Purchased Songs" and nothing is found - the "i" error. The iTunes database still accounts for all the songs, and yes, the Preferences are pointing to the correct folder.
I had turned on the genius option and played with that - kinda cool. And generally poked around at first and didn't notice anything missing right away.
I have downloaded a few free HD TV shows, so if they went missing before that, I'm not likely to recover anything now (data overwrite).
A cmd-i on the iTunes Music folder in the finder now says 577 items - which means 12,072 files went missing, randomly. Pre-upgrade TV shows (Dr. Horrible, etc) and all the podcast are gone (except the ones that auto updated after the upgrade). The files are actually missing - missing from the hard drive - and I didn't delete them. I last did a back up about 6 months ago, but have added a bunch since. And, yes I know I should have backed up before upgrading. But geeez, holy s*t - most everything gone!
    Any suggestions?

Ditto on your loss. I lost nearly 6000 songs with the upgrade. I still have them on the I-Pod but not on the computer. As a result I cannot attach my I-Pod to the computer as the syncing would take away what is on the pod. Most of the songs are in an archive but it would take days to transfer them over to I-tunes again. Is there a way to back load from the pod to the computer?

  • Upgraded to iTunes 11, can't find files, can't play movies

I upgraded to iTunes 11 then tried to play a TV Show I had downloaded from the iTunes store. First I got an error saying it could not locate the file. I manually located the file which was exactly where it said it was, and now I'm getting an error of "This movie cannot be played on this computer." I have uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it and am still getting the same error.

I copied the TV Show to my iPad and I'm getting a "Cannot Open" error when I try to play it on the iPad.

  • Download Error with iTunes 10.2.1 "source file could not be read"

I recently had to restore my iPod due to some issues I was having. After it was done wiping the iPod, a message on my computer told me that after my computer restarted (automatically), I needed to keep my ipod connected so it could re-sync with my backup file. When it restarted, I waited awhile for my ipod to show up in itunes, but unfortunately it never did. I then went to the support page for this, which I have had to do in the past, and I learned that I had to completely reinstall itunes. This is the second time in the past month I have had to do this. I deleted all of the necessary files mentioned on the support page and then restarted my computer. I then went to the itunes download page and clicked download iTunes 10.2.1, the latest version, which is the same version I had before I uninstalled it.
    _*THE ERROR:*_
About 30 seconds into the download, I get an error message that reads:
    "Download Error
/Users/Berry/Downloads/iTunes10.2.1.dmg could not be saved, because the source file could not be read"
This did not happen last time I had to do this re-installation process.
Thanks in advance for any help and sorry for the long post.

Whats the problem with this thing?
One thing i can tell is that i changed some settings in Micromedia Flash, because i learned that they where spying on US, then boom no more download. It stops and tell me it could not be read from the server. Dont remember if it started right after i changed the settings, but its driving me nuts

  • Mxmlc / compc: automatically link in all source files?

In the standard configuration, compc and mxmlc only link in classes actually used by your project. We're using code generation to get ActionScript classes from our Java classes for AMF serialization. We deal with most of these generically, so we don't automatically reference all the generated classes. Consequently, some of these are compiled out of the final .swf, causing hard-to-track-down serialization issues. Is there a simple way to tell mxmlc / compc to include *all* classes defined in a certain path? I tried to use include-sources, but when I just add all the source files to include-sources (I'm using mxmlc / compc through ant with a fileset for this purpose, for what it's worth, but the problem is not ant-specific), I get weird errors about circular inheritance. Any other strategies for achieving this?

    Hi,
One way you might ba able to acomplish this is when you are auto-generating your actionscript classes from Java, create a classes.as file.
    package
    internal class LinkClasses
        import mx.package.LinkClass;
Include this class in the compc include class.
This should alow the linker to pick up all classes very neatly.

  • Software upgrade - reloading itunes without erasing music from PC or ipod!

Hello, I hope someone can help me?
My PC software has recently been upgraded. All my music has been saved but is now stored under windows media player not itunes. I want to get everything back up and running and to be able to connect my ipod, buy new music and have my itunes library as it used to be.
What should I do? Download itunes again? Authorize my newly upgraded computer? Help please! Not particularly computer lingo literate so advice in its plainest form would be much appreciated!!

    Hello Zosha15,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes. You will want to download and install the newest version of iTunes. From there, you will need to move the music from Windows Media player to iTunes by first finding where all this music is actually located on your system. Then you can go ahead and import it into iTunes. The article below should be able to assist you with this.
    http://www.jakeludington.com/askjake/20080329_transfer_music_from_windows_media_player_toitunes.html
You may have to choose the "Erase and Sync" option when you plug your iPod in because it will still associate it itself with your old iTunes library. This option will erase all content from the iPod and set it back to its default settings as well as allow you to sync it with your newly created library.

  • ODI: Can I create join link between the source Files?

I have a few flat files that has foreign key relationships to each other, and I put them as source files, and try to import data to Essbase from them. and I got the error message: The source data server has no join capacilities. But if I just put all of the informations inside one flat file, the transferring is successful. It seems I cannot put "joins" on the source flat files. Please advise, thanks!

    Hi,
You can join tables in your source area, even if they are flat files.
The joins will be done in a staging area, depending on the size of the files and the location of the agent you are running it can define where you want the staging area to be.
If the files are small and the joins are not complex then it can be done using the memory engine, otherwise in most circumstances I would use the power of a relational engine such as Oracle/SQL server as the staging area.
Make sure you use a staging area for the interface or you will get the error messages, also on the joins make sure they are done in the staging area, there will be an option when you highlight the join
    Cheers

  • Help!!!  Trying to recreate iTunes Music Library file(s)

Long story, but basically starts out with me being dumb and trying to move iTunes files in Windows, without reading iTunes instructions.
Anyway, to cut a long story short - I was trying to move files from my C drive to my D drive (C having run out of space). Did this in Windows explorer - natch iTunes finds no Music Library Files.
I've copied back the files (from D to C), but having restarted iTunes, still no Music Library (no songs listed, no playlists etc.) - the two library files (XML file and IML(?) file) have been overwritten, i.e. they're empty. I have one backup old iTunes library file (the non-XML file) from Dec 07 (from "Previous iTunes Libraries"). I have tried reinstalling this to the iTunes directory, but still no avail.
So, any kind people out htere able to tell me if I have any options? (everything crossed). I can live without my playlists as I can just recreate (also I have on my iPod so hopefully I can rescue?) but I really need to be able to reinstate my list of music files again in the iTunes window, or regenerate a new one. The files are all there, and iTunes is up to date, it just won't recognise.
    HELP! PLEASE!!!
    Cheers.
    SW11

The File/"Add Folder to Library" command (then pointing to where your iTunes Music files are) sorts this. Doesn't get playlists back however.

  • 1 source file on external drive - but duplicates of files in iTunes - help!

I recently moved all my music to an external HD and followed mac's intructions for the transfer w/o any probs. However, the HD died (dropped it) and everything was lost on the HD.
To solve this, I used a program called "Pod to Mac" in an effort to recover all my files (about 35 GB) from my iPod. Worked very well. All files are now back on a new external HD.
The issue I've encountered is that in iTunes, I now have two versions of each song. Both versions in iTunes refer to a single source file in my external HD ... so if I delete one file in iTunes, I delete the source file for the second copy of this file in iTunes, too.
This isn't a big problem, except iTunes now thinks that I have 70 GB worth of music (ie, 2 times 35 GB; even though I really only have 35 GB of music), which means I don't have enough memory in my iPod to sync all 70 GB.
How can I delete one version of the file in iTunes w/o messing with the source file on my external HD?
    thanks.

You'll have to try to repair the drive on a PC.
How is it possible that iTunes can read the files?
Some things will still be readable when corruption occurs, the big problem is when writing occurs when there's corruption.

  • Is it possible to add pic/diagram to SP file with link to another SP file?

    Hi,
Is it possible to add a diagram, picture, or table to a SP file with link to another SP file?
I know this is possible in, say, Word. For example, I can add a diagram and check a box to include a link to the source file - so that when the diagram in the source file updates, the diagram in my document also updates.
This is also my goal in SP - instead of simply including a link to a document elsewhere in SP (or on the same site in SP), I would ideally like to display a diagram, picture, or table and include (behind the scenes if possible) to the source SP file
so that, when the diagram/table in the source SP file updates, my SP file also updates accordingly.
    For example:
    Instead of:
           The diagram is located in:
           link
    I would ideally like:
Diagram, picture, or table (with link associated with it) - users can click on the diagram or picture if they desire.
The diagram or picture is updated whenever the source SP file containing the diagram or picture is updated (the source SP
file will only contain a diagram, picture, or table)
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thank you very much.

  • How do I "link" my music folders to the iTunes Library?

I have recently upgraded my computer. I have formated my disk and installed a new XP, Office, iTunes etc.
Now I have all my music files on a disk D: and my iTunes at C: but I can't manage to "add"/"link" my music folders to the iTunes Library. After iTunes installation, I have changed the path at Edit/Preferences/Advanced/iTunes Music Folder Location to D: ... but the iTunes Library keeps "empty".
    Help please !!!
    Thanks.

    Goncalo,
Changing the location of the iTunes Music folder will only affect songs you add with iTunes in the future.
To add the songs you already have, use the File menu > Add Folder to Library ... option and select the folder that contains your music in the navigation pop-up window that appears.

  • Why does the upgrade program break my links?

When I use a Windows machine, iTunes upgrades create new links where I don't want them and break my old links.
No other upgrade does this (not counting QuickTime). What's wrong with the Apple upgrade?

It's the built in Mac Mail. It loses settings right and left. Just do a search for problems with Mac Mail and you will turn up thousands of threads. Most are "I can send but can't receive" or "I can receive buy can't send".
And then there will be tins like your about always asking for a password when yesterday or even a few hours ago it didn't and hasn't since you set up the account.
If you want to get rid of all the problems Mail may give you switch to some other Mail program, Any other Mail program.
