802.X Internet Sharing - Broken Button?

I currently live in a residence hall that requires 802.X authentication via Ethernet for internet access. This 802.X authentication requires me to install a certificate and corresponding Internet Connect profile. It works great, but I'd like to be able to extend the connection to my MacBook via OS X's built-in Internet Sharing.
When I open the Internet Sharing pref-pane, I select that'd I'd like to share my ethernet connection via airport. When I click the "Start" button, it beachballs for a second, and then changes to button to "Stop" as if it worked. Whenever I click off the pref-pane and open it again, the button reverts back to "Start".
For some reason the service will not start, and I have no idea where to start looking to get it to work. Is there a log file that I can check out? Why doesn't the pref-pane recognize that there is a problem with sharing? Perhaps there is some 3rd-party software that would share the connection instead of OS X's?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Ahhh, I think that info is also loaded from/duplicated in...
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
And as I seeit, it's what's loaded on Booting, and I surmise that it takes precedence, (sometimes), over everything later.
But more clarity on the "fresh system restore" is needed, like "restore" from a pevious setup, or "fresh install".:-)

  • Internet Sharing broken (prefs day working, no natd or IP set)

    Hi,
Currently I am unable to get internet sharing working at all. I have a connection from Airport that I am trying to share to Built-in Ethernet. I have the firewall turned off. I setup the connection in the Sharing Preference Pane and it looks to have worked fine (I get the confirmation, hit OK and the Start button becomes Stop).
However Built-in Ethernet does not have an IP address (totally empty) and pa awwx | grep -i natd shows that natd isn't even running. It's like the preference pane gives a total no-op, not even a log message that I can find.
I've checked system.log and console.log, nothing there. I've trashed networking and sharing preferences, run software upgrade and fixed disk permissions.
I suspect it is related to Parallels or VMware Fusion, both of which were installed at various points but have now been uninstalled. There are no interfaces out of the ordinary. However the drop down list in the Sharing Pref Pane still shows en2 and en3 as possible sources (but the Network Pref Pane doesn't list these as interfaces at all), this persists after removing the preferences (are these, perhaps, stored in NetInfo somewhere?).
Any similar experiences? Any ideas on how to get this working again would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James

I've found that any one or more of these can affect that...

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist

With those extra Interfaces stored in the 4th one... or created by some Startup/Login Item, like third party Adapters & such.

  • Internet Sharing broken again with 10.6.8 update?

I have used Internet Sharing for years.  (SysPrefs/Sharing/Internet Sharing/Share your connection from [Ethernet] to computers using [Airport]).  It is very useful in my large old house, where my iMac is connected by an ethernet cable to a WiFi router in another part of the house; it gives me another WiFi zone without having to buy a WiFi extender.
This seems to be a forgotten feature in the OS (forgotten by Apple, that is).  Several times in the last few years, it has "broken" ie ceased to work after an OS upgrade, and only worked again after either another upgrade to the OS or to Airport.  The last time, upgrading to OS 10.6.7, it still worked but had an annoying but tolerable bug which required me to switch it off then on again after a restart.
I have just upgraded to 10.6.8 and it seems to be broken again.  (iPad etc can see the network, pretend to join it, but don't actually connect to the internet).
Anyone else got the same problem?
    Anyone at Apple reading this?
Maybe I should just go and buy another WiFi extender (they're a lot cheaper now) and stop trying to use my Mac to do this!

My wife's new(ish) MacBook Air had the wifi problem. As soon as she upgraded to 10.6.7, she lost internet connection - though wifi signal was still strong. We were hoping the new upgrade to 10.6.8 would fix the problem. It didn't. I tried everything - PRAM, disk permission repairs, etc etc. Finally, this evening, on a whim, I decided to input my old DNS settings (from when I was using the Witopia VPN) into her network settings. I have no idea why, but her connection returned immediately. I tried deleting them again to make sure it really was that, and the connection was lost. Put them back, and the internet came back. Bizarre. We are not even using Witopia anymore (we are in China, and use Asterill). Can anyone explain what's happening?
    Thanks!

  • Internet Sharing a WWAN connection

I live in a remote area of Virginia were the only Internet access is either Hughesnet which is very expensive and restrictive or Mobile Broadband. I went with Alltel Mobile Broadband, I have two machines, 1st is a MacBook 2 GB and second is a MacMini 2 GB. The Mobile Broadband is supplied via a Huawei EC168 USB modem. The problem is getting Internet on both machines and our iPhone's. I hooked the Huawei EC168 USB modem to the MacMini then hooked an Ethernet cable to my Airport Extreme, selected the Alltel Internet connection in the Internet Sharing prefs panel, turned on Internet Sharing and it worked. *GREAT* Well, it's all good until the power goes off or any other problem arises. Then it just doesn’t work, I have repaired permissions and got it to work again but then it will just quit. I spend hours troubleshooting, I have tried running the Ethernet thur a broadband router so that everything has an assigned ip address. Still have problems. To me it the Internet sharing feature is very flaky. Does anybody know of a more stable way to share a WWAN Internet connection? It might require the purchase of a travel router but I would like to find a solution via the macs.

    Hi!
I'm having the same issue... I tried many different ways and I'm still not able to share my Ethernet 802.1x internet connection.
I have exactly the same configuration: Ethernet (802.1x) > Internet Sharing > Shared over Wi-Fi
I tried changing the IP, DHCP, and so on... but still no changes.
It can be possible that my roomate con make it with Connectify on his PC and I can't on a Mac. What's going on?
Did you solve it? Is it true that if I get an Airport Extreme I can solve this issue? I don't want to spend money without solving the problem.
    Thanks,

  • Internet sharing wifi 802.11b/g

Hi. I don't know if this is possible or maybe I'm looking at it at the wrong way. I am trying to share internet from my MBP via Wifi. But the other non mac laptops can't connect to it. They can see the wifi connection, but they can't connect to it.
I'm thinking that my MBP is broadcasting in 802.11n while the other laptops only have 802.11b/g. If this is the case, can i make my MBP broadcast in 802.11b/g?
If this isn't the case, what can I do to give them internet?
My ipod touch does get internet from this broadcast though.
    Thanks in advance.

You can definitely share wireless from your laptop by setting up what's known as an 'ad hoc network'. Usually this means that the IPs issued are in the 169.254.x.y range, which is otherwise better known as APIPA and when not being used as an ad hoc network range indicates that there's a problem with the DHCP server.
You can also turn on DHCP yourself and set up a valid private range, usually in the 192.168.x.y range.
Your laptop will work with 802.11n, g, b, and a systems.
You will need to turn on Internet Sharing, select the relevant ports, and turn off the relevant firewall entries. Other devices will need to pick up the signal (which will not be strong) and will need to use the correct network.

  • Airport Roaming Network and Internet Sharing

Dear Esteemed Experts (Tesserax et. al):
Thanks to you, I have successfully set up TC and 2 Airport Express N in a roaming network (plugged to Ethernet but using the same name and protocol) using 802.11n (b/g compatible) radio mode. It's working well, except a few blind spots to cover.
If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
Also, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk? If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
    Thanks
    Aghoo

If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
If it is connected via Ethernet it will have no direct affect on the performance of the 802.11n network.
lso, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk?
Internet sharing has nothing to do with joining a wireless network. If you want your iMac to join the wireless network, just go to the AirPort menu and select the network that you want to join.
If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
AirPort Utility is only for managing Apple's base stations.

  • Help with Firewall and Internet Sharing

I’m trying to use my Mac Mini with an Airport Extreme card, which is connected to the internet using Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem, for Internet Sharing with a Windows (work) laptop.
So, in the Sharing preferences panel:
Share connection from: Built in Ethernet
    To computers using: Airport
    I get the warning message:
Other settings may interfere with Internet Sharing.
The ‘More Info’ button gives the popup message:
Your firewall settings will prevent computers sharing your internet connection from browsing the web. Enable Personal Web Sharing in the Services pane to allow computers sharing your connection to browse the web.
I do that, turn the Airport card on, and the laptop can see the network, but can’t connect.
If I turn the Firewall off, then I can connect fine, but then I don’t have a Firewall. Isn’t that risky if I’m using DSL? How can I do the internet sharing and still protect my computer?
I realize I could buy a router with a built-in firewall, but isn’t there a way to set up the system using what I have?

Oh, and when you say the PC can't connect, could that just mean it can't browse?
On the PC, put the IP of the Mac in DNS servers, or...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.22
Well, I'm unable to set the DNS server addresses, as this is a work computer and I don't have the administrative privileges.
How bad is it to just turn the Firewall on the Mac off when I want to use the connection?

  • USB modem and Internet Sharing causes system to hang.

First my setup. I have a Mac mini (early 2009) running 10.7.2 connected to the Internet using a Sony Ericsson W910 as a USB modem. I am using Internet sharing via Ethernet to a 1st generation (n) AirPort Extreme to give Wi-Fi to other devices (iPhone, Xbox 360, PS3 etc).
Now the problem: When Internet Sharing is on regardless of what interfaces are used (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth PAN etc) eventually—that word is key—my system will hang. Internet will be unavailable to every device and my Mac itself (but they will still be connected to Wi-Fi) and any app that is running willbeachball. Any app I launch—or try to—will also beachball. I've tried leaving it to see if it will resolve itself —even overnight—but it always requires a hard reset.
The eventually part. I haven't figured out what causes this but I have an idea which I'll explain later. The times this happens is totally random. It has gone days with  no problems and other times has happened minutes apart. Usually it's about every 12-24 hours.
It's definitely Internet Sharing which is causing this because when I turn it off I don't have any problems. I've tried every configuration. Only sharing via my mini's Wi-Fi or Ethernet, leaving the AirPort out etc. As soon as I turn on Internet Sharing I've started a countdown to a hang.
On inspecting the Console the last messages before a hang without fail are always:
    12/12/2011 06:31:07.000 kernel: 80       80 AppleUSBCDCECMData: getOutputBuffer - Output buffer pool empty
    12/12/2011 06:31:07.000 kernel: 80       66 AppleUSBCDCECMData: USBTransmitPacket - Output buffer unavailable
    12/12/2011 06:58:58.312 com.apple.usbmuxd: _handle_timer Fish out of water!!!
Repeated hundreds of times. Quick Googling indicates that AppleUSBCDCECMData is a USB driver. Apparently I have version 4.1.15 which appears to be the latest.
I'm aware this is a rare configuration but I believe it affects every USB not just this particular phone.
Is anybody else experiencing this or knows a way to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Barry.
The hub is on its way to the manufacturer for after sales service...
But the issue with AirPort remains the same, even after resetting SMC.
    Some clarification:
    * It happens just after computer wakes up from sleep. Restarting solves the problem and the issue doesn't arise until computer goes standby again.
    * The whole WiFi card becomes unresponsive. It is not only the Turn Off button, but the whole functionality is stopped. The card can not be activated/deactivated and it doesn't connect to any network. If it is used for internet sharing, clients are unable to connect.

  • USB hub and internet sharing stop working after sleep

    Hi,
I have a relatively new Bluestork USB hub I purchased to connect multiple USB devices I have at the same time. It used to work correctly under Leopard, but now it stops working each time the computer wakes up from sleep. I have to restart the computer for it to start working again. Both link and power LEDs stay on, even when the hub is not recognized.
My second problem is related to internet sharing. It stops working after each sleep/wakeup cycle and the only way to make it work again is to restart the computer. It used to work correctly before Snow Leopard as well.
I have all the Mac updates installed.

    Thanks Barry.

cndn gettng worse without internet.....plzzz help

I've got similar problems but with my connection tethering doesn't even start:apn was filled in, I start 3G which gives me perfect data transfer H+ quality, wifi is swiched on, I start tethering, I get the tethering menu with lumia 720 name and #of connections =0, the "configuration" button though is GREY and not not active at all, and after 2secs the whole menu is left and the lumia goes back to the main system menu telling me " there's no data connection to be shared" and calls it a day... I tested the same SIM for tethering with exactly the same apn on my old lumia 610 running wp7.8: result is a perfect tethered internet connection, 3.5G speed. So I'm f.ck.d up with my wp8 lumia running Amber!
Can anyone out there in Nokia HQ tell me why a "better" product is performing with a  lot more bugs! And this is a big one! I will consider the 720 for a short while if this isn't solved it goes out and will be replaced by an iOS product which tethers as it should.

  • Internet Sharing turns itself off after a minute or so

I have an Intel iMac running 10.5.2. Up until a week ago, I was sharing my internet connection with a Windows computer and a wii. Last weekend, the connection went dead, I reset the modem and rebooted my computer, and the internet connection is fine, but the Mac won't share it. I select Internet Sharing in the Preferences, the green dot appears, and for a minute, I can use the internet on the P.C. Then it's off. The preferences panel shows that it's on, but if I reopen preferences, it's no longer checked as on. I've deleted the com.apple.nat.plist file in the library, but no luck.
My system has cable internet to a router, and splitting it 3 ways. It's worked fine for 2 months, until now.

The problem seems to have come from my wireless transmitter (to my wii). I hit a few buttons on it and the problem solved itself. Why would an outside product over-ride my macs internet sharing? No idea, but it's solved for today at least.

  • I can't download apps to my iPad via Internet sharing (Lion) anymore

I always use my Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard to share my Internet connection with my iPad 2. However, since I upgraded to Lion, my iPad 2 can't seem to download apps thru Internet Sharing anymore. If I use our office WiFi, the App download works fine. But when I connect using Internet Sharing again, it doesn't download the apps.
Interestingly, all my other apps (in the iPad) that require internet connectivity works really well. Only the app store can't download, it surfs really fast though when I want to view an app. ONLY the download is not working right.
    Any thoughts?

Close all the apps in the recents tray on your iPad, reboot again, and see if that solves either problem.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Since it will not hurt anything, you could try resetting your router as well. Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Problem with File/Internet Sharing

Could someone help me with an Airport problem?
I have two Minis: one in the study for general use(PPC, 10.4.9) and one in the kitchen(intel, 10.4.9) for music. So, I thought I’d try and connect them using Airport, but by just using the two computers, ie without a base station/router.
In the sharing panel of System Preferences, I gave the study computer the name “Study”, and the kitchen one the name “Music”. I ticked Personal File Sharing, Personal Web Sharing and Printer Sharing on each computer in the Services and Firewall panels. For “Study”(the Gateway computer) I turned on Internet Sharing using External Modem to computers using Airport. In the menubar, the Airport symbol for “Study” has an arrow in it, and on “Music” it’s the normal symbol.
The following is common to both computers. Clicking on Network in the Sidebar opens a window showing two aliases: Library(which double clicks as broken) and Servers. According to David Pogue’s Tiger OSX Missing Manual, there should be a “My Network” folder.
The Servers alias leads to an alias “The Study”.local or “Music”.local. This opens to the Macintosh HD window of the relevant computer, showing the usual folders. Opening “Users” shows the Home Account folder for that computer and “Music” or ”Study” and Shared.
Opening “Music” or “Study” shows folder icons for the Home Account of the other computer, ie Desktop, Documents, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public and Sites.
The only folders that I can open are Public and Sites. I don’t have the required “privileges” to open the others. In Public is Drop Box, which again I can’t open. If I put a file into the Public folder, it’s not visible on the other computer.
If I connect “Study” to the internet, and open Safari on “Music”, I get a not connected to the internet message.
So, The simple(!!!) question is: what haven’t I done to make it all work.
Answers in words of one syllable please

It sounds like you are using a non-admin account to log into the remote Mac. To see all the folders you can log in using an admin account or use SharePoints to make other folders visible.

  • Internet sharing suddenly stopped working - please help!

I have been sharing my internet for weeks from my computer but this morning it suddenly stopped working. I've tried changing the password, changing the channel number, and changing the Network name to a simple one, but it is all not working Apparently the authentication server is not responding? How can I fix that?

I'm having the same problem. I had internet sharing set up on my iMac from Ethernet via AirPort, and received quite well on my MacBook and iPod Touch, and then one day, it just stopped working. I'm assuming that some update or other caused this problem, but I have no idea which (I mostly use the internet on my desktop machine, so it may have been several days before I noticed the problem). I've tried with-and-without a password, and also tried sharing from my MacBook to the iMac and iPod Touch, and I can't get any bandwidth (I can connect to the 802.11 network that I create, but I can't get any internet through it).
