8350i uncaught exception java.lang.NullPointerException after hard reset

basic info:
8350i
v4.6.1.204 (Platform 3.0.0.73)
Desktop Manager 4.7
everything is good except that i've been using two batteries, one in the phone and one in a charger. when the phone's battery is almost drained i swap it with the charged one which of course causes a hard reset.
this procedure was working well for at least a week or two until last month when i swapped batteries - after the hard reset i got
uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException
i could make calls but all other software seemed corrupted... virtually nothing else worked... icons missing etc.
tried all sorts of solutions but the only thing that fixed it was a full on device software erase/reload, then a data restore from previous backup. at the time i figured it was just a random thing and was glad to learn how to do a complete software reload.
then yesterday it happened again (again, immediately at the end of the security check after hard reset). now i'm afraid to swap batteries because it would appear that every time i hard reset there is a 10% (my guess) chance of software corruption and a complete reload takes a significant amount of time.
has anybody else noticed this? does anybody have a solution?
can i swap batteries without a hard reset; i.e. swap while plugged into power? i haven't tried this yet for fear of causing my BB harm.

    Hi,
    I know that there are many other threads about this error but they're all to do with bbm.
    I have this error with my web browser, whenever I press the button for options, everything in the browser freezes. If I hold down the options button my multi task bar DOES pop up, but my browser is still frozen and if I leave and return the error ( Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException ) pops up.
    I noticed this started happening after I began using bridge and tethering with my playbook.
    The first time it happened I rebooted my phone and it DID work but I can't keep rebooting my phone for this, can I?
    My phone is now almost two years old (come this December) somebody please help? I don't want to send it in for repairs.

    There's pretty much no diagnosing those -- they are the equivalent of the random errors in Windows for which tracing the root cause is fruitless. Basically, these are the last out in the programming code -- some event occurred for which there is no handler in the code. The fix is a code update that handles the event...but, again, knowing what the event is is pretty much impossible. So, there are a few things to try:
    Sometimes, the code simply becomes corrupt and needs to be refreshed -- just like a reboot:
    Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    If it won't boot up cleanly, then you may need to try Safe Mode:

    There might be an updated code set from the carrier -- check them via this portal:

    The toughest possible cause is a badly behaving app. To find it, there are a couple of options. One is to see if you can read the log file:
    Go to the home screen. Hold down the "alt" key and type 'lglg'. (You will not see anything while you type).This will bring up the log file. Scroll down (probably many pages) untill you see a line that says 'uncaught execption'. Click on this line. The name of the app will be in the info. Alternative methods for bringing up the logs are in this KB:

    The other method is to remove apps one at a time, waiting a while in between (I usually recommend a week), until the problem ceases...thereby discovering the offending app. Still another method is to reload the BB OS cleanly, leaving some time between adding other apps onto the BB so as to be able to determine exactly which one is the cause.

  • BB not communicating with computer & an"Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException" issue

    I am stuck between a rock & a hard place.  I would really like some advice that will prevent me from losing all of my contacts data.
    Firstly, I have not backed up any of my data from my BB!  I have now very quickly tried to rectify this today, uploading the software and downing loading all updates.
    I have some corruption or other on the BB that has caused me to lose 4 of my 5 email accounts and also unable to access the unread emails in the remaining account or text/call out.
    One of the messages that I get on the BB is Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException (the other is longer and I cannot remember what it said, but it was similar).
    I have read that I need to backup, wipe then restore to get rid of the corruption.  My problem is that I cannot back up therefore if I go ahead and clean the BB then I will lose all of my data?
    Is there any way I can transfer the data to my SIM card - it isn't a lot at all, maybe 100 contacts............
    Looking forward to a solution, have spent all day mucking around with troublesome technology - when I had so many more important things to do......

    You can use any OS...you are not limited to your carriers. If you do use an OS from other than your home carrier, then insert, between steps 1 and 2 in the above, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML.

  • Uncaught Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

    Hi,
    My BB 8220 flip has always had battery problems. Lately the battery dies after only 8 hours in standby mode. The last time it died was two days ago, and after four hours of charging it finally turned back on - only to have the error 'Uncaught Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException' showing on the screen.  I have noticed that now the Call Log does not work for Incoming, Outgoing and Missed calls.  The SMS has also mysteriously disappeared so I am unable to send and receive texts.  My address book is still intact.  I don't have a data plan so I do not have any extra applications on the phone, simply what it came with.  I have tried to reboot (removing battery) a few times, but the error has not fixed itself.
    Any simple ways to fix this error, or is my phone beyond repair?

    Given your description, I advise an OS reload or upgrade. From a PC, you can install any OS package to a BB via this procedure:

    Note that while written for "reload", it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
    If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Uncaught exception java.lang.nullpointerexception on 9300

    Help - please can some one help. I get the above msg (uncaught exception java.lang.nullpointerexception) when I try and access my emails or txt msg. I can make & recieve calls. Have tried removing battery and resetting, also removed the email and reinstalled, but still get the same error. I havent added any new Apps or downloaded any thing on the blackberry.

    Configuration:
    AT&T 8310 OS 8310M_PBr4.5.0_rel152_PL2.7.0.90_A4.5.0.110_AT&T
    Desktop Manager - 4.6.013
    Enteprise server (IBM Lotus Notes) - 4.1.5.26
    Created backup of device
    Ran the upgrade from Desktop Manager, upgrade Failed!
    Attempted a fresh install of the OS as per bb support article - 11320 - restored the device data, had issues with accessing email.
    Decided to wipe device and re-activate.  Started to get the Uncaught exception message after the wipe and had issues with the activation.
    Wiped the device several times and still getting the message, it also takes a long time for the inbox to open up.
    I'm thinking this might be an Enterprise issue and the policy that the user had set before performing the upgrade.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue upgrading BES user's BBs to the new 4.5 os?

    On our BES we have a few policies setup for BB users.  The users that are getting this message are on a restricted Policy, the other users that have the less restricted policy (downloads, personal email enabled) do not get this error after the upgrade is completed.
    We are not doing a mass roll out of the upgrade to users, but have found that some users that have email sync issues are resolved with the upgrade.
    Is there a best practice guide that shows the best way to upgrade the device os for users running on BES.

    My BBM is not working after i have updated to the .983 OS recommended by Blackberry update service.
    I have tried unistalling it and is not there to be able to do it, but also is not available to be install either.
    Anyone has an answer/Solution.

    However, there is a newer update available that I'm going to try to install first. If that doesn't resolve the issue then I'll have no choice but to downgrade to an earlier build.

  • MMS-Perl 8130: uncaught exception:java.lang.nullpointerException

    Wondering if anyone can help me on this as it is driving me nuts and no one at Bell can provide any assistance. I have to keep doing a hard refresh to clean this out, but it always returns. Is there a reasons this comes up all the time? Could it be my hardware? Someone mentioned it could be a person that I added, but can't figure out which person it might be. Could it be that I don't have a pin set up for a specific person. I apologize for my ignorance, but I can't figure this out and nobody I talk to seems to know.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    If you have installed and 3rd party apps like googlemail etc, go to options-advanced options-application then scroll to the instaled app and change the permission to allow. save and exit. Restart App. and there is no problem worked for me hope it does for you too.. Pls. message me if it works

    Help! I can not access my BBM because when I click on the icon all I get is the error message in the subject line. I have uninstalled and reinstalled messenger to no avail. There must be a solution, but I can not find it here on on Crackberry. Can someone please help me?

    Try backing up your BBM contacts and deleting the Blackberry Messenger database from your device. If this does not resolve the issue, try backing up your device using the BlackBerry Desktop Software and doing a clean reload of the device software. http://bbry.lv/bpv7E1 Make sure you test BBM before restoring any data from your backup.

    I am guessing that you are not a Java developer, and it is not your application that is causing the Null Pointer Exception. 
    It sounds like you have updated the OS on your Blackberry device and one of the applications that you have installed is not coping with the upgrade.  
    If you press on an application icon and then that causes the error, then you know there is a problem with that application and so you need to report this to the developers of that application and get an updated version. 
    If this is happening when you restart your device, then it appears that one of the installed applications is failing at start up time and so it is not obvious which application.  So you need to see which of your applications doesn't appear to be providing all the functions it used to, and it would be a good guess that it is that application that is causing the problem.  Again you need to go back to the developer to get an update. 
    Let us know if that does not help.
    Also you have posted in the Java developer forum.  If this really is not your program causing the problem, then I suggest a better place to post a question relating to the 9300 is in the appropriate device forum here:

  • The technique to solving Uncaught exception: java.lang.Error (and probably many like it too)

    It was a blessing in disguise that the above error came about or else I wouldn't have taken the effort to find a solution. At first, I tried to delete several apps, do a hard reboot several variations but it still wouldn't go. Then I thought of downgrading the OS back to the default version so that made me give the Blackberry Desktop Manager a try. Linking handphone to notebook, it was only then I found out an updated version was available so immediately I decided to update since the jump from version 5 to 6 was worth it. After the corrupted version was wiped out being replaced by a newer one, my problem was solved!

    1. Try to remove the batteries first reboot that will clear the application error
    2. Also try uninstalling the last application you installed before the error appears and reboot / unplug the battery. You can reinstall these applications later.
    3. If it still errors, you can wipe your handheld to clear / delete all the applications and reinstall the application required. How to delete all data and applications from the BlackBerry smartphone using the Security Wipe optio...
    4. The final solution is to reinstall OS or all OS upgrade to the latest version. How to update or reinstall BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

  • Uncaught exception: java.lang.​ArrayStore​Exception

    I recently started getting the subject message each time I reboot my phone. I attached part of the Event Log, below, that may help identify the software activity at the time the exception occurred. The problem started some time after I upgraded several apps (listed below). I have tried deleting those apps and then reinstalling them one at a time and in different order. Those apps apparently do not directly cause the exception.
    I would appreciate any insights, suggestions, etc. I would like to try to rectify the issue without resorting to wiping my device and then reinstalling firmware, software, and databases.

    Hello!
    Given your description, I fear you have no choice but the drastic measure you dislike...if something has introduced OS level corruption, then nothing less will cure that. You may want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:
    Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
    If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
    If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
    Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
    If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
    Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
    When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
    If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
    If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

  • BB 8800 gives error "uncaught exception: java.lang.​ClassCastE​xception"

    Hi,
    after connecting the 8800 via bluetooth with the new RNS310 radio in my car the 8800 shows the error message "uncaught exception: java.lang.ClassCastException" when the RNS310 tries to access the phone book and to download it to the radio-internal phone book. The option for the bluetooth connection in the 8800 is set to
    - not "visible",
    - address book transfer "all entries",

    Is there any possibility to update the 8800 software / firmware to get rid of the error? I always have to disconnect the battery and restart.

    There is a loader.exe tool located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader (or if you are using a 64 bit C:\Program Files (X86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    Remove the battery from your BlackBerry and launch the Loader tool. You will see either USB PIN: Unknown or your actual device PIN.
    As the loading process starts, there will be a list of steps to be completed in the loading process. One of those steps listed will say "Wait for Device Initialization". When you see the arrow get to this steps, reinsert your battery.
    If you still get the same error, let me know and we will investigate further from there.
