8g vs. 16g RAM Late 2011 13" MBP

Hi,
I am running 10.7.5 and 4g is not enough for my purposes.
I basically use Photoshop CS5 et al. (Creative Desing Suite) And MS Office.
Largest files are 1g on rare occations (panoramas in PS)
While 16g is "only" $80 right now if I won't notice much of a difference or PS or the OSX does not use it all I'd just as soon have 8g and a $40 dinner if ya get my drift.
Thanks,
Warren

I would get 8 GB and have dinner.

    I have a mac book pro 15", i7 2.2 ghz, 8 Gb RAM - Later 2011
I have the same problem many users who purchased this model.
He broke his logic. Due to the large number of people with the same problem, I consult if Apple has a solution to meet Apple loyal customers.
Remember the high cost of purchased equipment.
Thank you very much for your time.

    Rafael,
no, Apple has not acknowledged a problem with the 15-inch Late 2011 MacBook Pro in a similar way to how they had acknowledged a problem with the 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Because of this, unless you have an alternative means of legal redress, you would need to pay for a replacement logic board.

iPhoto disappeared from my late 2011 17'' MBP OS 10.7.4, app store says: These apps cannot be accepted on this computer.
    What should I do?

Hey there! So, I already contacted Mac App Store support several times, the response:
    - "Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.
Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible"
I answered I really needed it, and if they knew the estimated time it would take to solve the issue. Here's the last response.
    - "According to your previous correspondence, you have not been able to install iLife after reinstalling OS X Lion. I understand that this issue is under investigation, and that you would like to know the amount of time needed to find a resolution. As a fellow iTunes customer, I certainly understand that you need to use iPhoto for professional reasons, and I'll gladly help you to resolve this problem.
Unfortunately, I am unable to give you the exact amount of time this issue could take. I do assure you that our engineers are currently working towards a resolution. "
I'm going to an Apple Sotre Genius today, in 2 hours. I'll keep updated!!

  • Late 2011 17" MBP - Will not boot, eject, or read disk

    Hi guys,
My late 2011 17" MBP after having a server error on Mac Recovery, freezing, and being force shut off, now will not boot.
When you power it up, it chimes then goes to a blue screen, indefinitely.
It also will not eject the DVD in it's drive.
I've tried every key combination prior to startup or during startup to try and remedy this, and nothing.
It always boots with a chime then blue screen.
    Please help. :3

    Ejecting the disk:
    Try these various remedies: http://guides.macrumors.com/Force_Eject_a_Stuck_CD_or_DVD
Since your Mac came with Lion installed it may have a recovery partition on the boot disk.
There are two ways boot from the Recovery Partition:
    - Hold down the Command-R as you boot.
This will attempt to boot from the Recovery Partition
and if that fails it will try to boot using Network Recovery (a slow process).
    - If it won’t boot using Command-R then hold down the Option key as you boot.
              Select the Recovery Partition.
Backup:  Do you have a recent backup?  If not I suggest you create one before proceeding.  You might not need it but it is especially important to have a backup whenever your Mac is sick.  Post back for instructions for an emergency backup, if needed.
    Blue Screen:
From the Recovery Partition you should be able to repair the disk and reïnstall OS X (without erasing you existing data).

  • Using Dual External Monitors as Separate Screens with Late-2011 15" MBP

    Hello,
I've looked around for answers, but haven't found something that seems to address what I'm looking for.
I have a late-2011 15" MBP. The Apple TB FAQ page says it can support two external monitors. I currently have it hooked up to one external monitor via mini-to-HDMI.
I'd like to add a second external monitor, but am not sure the best way to do that. It looks like the Apple TB monitors can do it natively, by daisy-chaining, but I can't afford to purchase two of those monitors. I'd prefer to use a third-party monitor like a ViewSonic 27" or some such, which are significantly more affordable.
I want to have two actual separate monitors, the way the setup they do with the Apple TB monitors appears – not two monitors that are splitting a single screen between them (as is the case with a few of the splitter-solutions I've seen linked).
Is there a way to achieve this?
    Thanks!

I should clarify that I would prefer to do it without using a USB port to do a USB-to-HDMI conversion. I have used USB for a monitor before, and I find the lag virtually unworkable. A daisy-chaining solution, or a native splitter would be ideal.

  • Late 2011 15" MBP periodic burst of white noise

Has anyone found a solution for this problem?  Every 30 seconds or so, I hear a burst of white noise.  I'm running a late 2011 15" MBP.  My co-worker has the same problem running a 2011 13" MBP.  It doesn't seem to be due to any 3rd party software as we're both running different problems.  It also happens with nothing running.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Can I use RAM from MBP 15 late 2011 to MBP 13 mid 2012

    Hi All,
I presently have an MBP 15 late 2011 (running at 4GB RAM) - which I feel is very slow. Had been reading a lot of discussion threads and most viable solution seems to be to upgrade my RAM - found it in Crucial.com (8gb x 2 kit).
I have another MBP 13 mid 2012 (running at 2GB RAM). I was wondering if I can transfer my 4GB RAM from my MBP 15 to my MBP 13.
Will there be any compatibility issues? Will this work?
    Can anyone advise please?
    Thanks.

  • Question about processor vs RAM in 2011 13 MBP

I am looking at upgrading my older Macbook to a new 13" MBP. I was going to get a 13" Macbook Air until I realized they did not have an ethernet port. I am contemplating between the 2.3 i5 with 8 gig of RAM and the 2.7 i7 with 4 gig. What do you guys think would be a better setup for system performance. I mainly just do normal tasks like web browsing and some programming.
    Thanks

Hi There. I just purchased the 2.7 Ghz this past Thursday, with the 4 GB RAM. I am loving it, and have had no performance issues, even when running iTunes, Mail, iChat, Safari and Aperture all at once. I think you'll be more than ok with 4GB based on your usage.
Also, you can easily add more RAM after the purchasing the machine if 4GB turns out to be too little. You can't change the processor though. That being said, that's why I went with the 2.7.

  • Max ram late 2007 17" MBP

The book says 4GB max OWC 6GB. I have bought a lot of memory from them in the past with no problems and wonder if anyone has installed 6 in their MBP.

If OWC says 6 GB will work, 6 GB will work and you not have any problems.   Mactracker concurs with them.  If you want to add RAM to total 6 GB, by all means do so.
    Ciao.

  • Late 2011 17' MBP suddenly got very loud and hot

    http://i.imgur.com/tZ1QZJM.png?1
Was using handbrake when suddenly the fans got loud and stayed like this for several minutes before I decided to cancel my DVD rip.
Looking at iStat the Fans were at 5,500 RPM & CPU at 185.
How bad was this? On occasion this happens but never for more than a few seconds.
    Any suggestions?
Also I just upgraded to Mountain Lion last week, if that matters.

    i'm afraid it didn't work....
it's like brightness control got stuck on lowest. If I shine a light on the sensor left of the iSight, the keyboard lights turns off, so the sensor works and shouldn't be the source of the problem.

  • Yosemite Type not appealing on a Late 2011 MBP

    I have a Late 2011 15" MBP non-retina.
Installed Yosemite and it works fine.
My only complaint is the text.  It seems fuzzy?  Especially on graphs in Safari; and text in Safari?
Could it be that the text is optimized for retina displays and is fuzzy on non-retina?
Would be interested if anyone else noticed this?

  • Late 2011 MBP shutting down randomly.

My late 2011 15" MBP will randomly shut down. I have disabled SMS because I installed an SSD about 2 months ago. I noticed that it happens when I place my laptop in my backpack or even when I close the lid and put it down on a table or a couch. I am pretty gentle with this machine. I've had these problems even before I installed the SSD. Before I had a 750GB HDD that had to be replaced because it was faulty. I have taken my machine in to an Apple sanctioned store with a certified tech on site to be serviced(also the placed I purchased the machine) and they solve the problem for a couple of weeks, then it starts up again. Not really sure where to go from here. Any help would be great.

Ok, so I ran the Apple Hardware Test (I needed to press and hold Option (alt) + D on startup, not ONLY D, which the apple KB stated) and the result was pretty clear:
"AHT found the following problem: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0x8329b798"
According to other discussions on the forum, this is, as Linc Davis stated, a problem with the RAM.
So, how do I reinstall the original RAM? Is this something that you can do by yourself? My Apple Care has expired, but I might have som guarantee left from the store where I bought my computer.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Late 2011 MBP model no dvd's?

I bought a new late 2011 13" mbp for my daughter.
It came with Lion installed but I can't find the DVD's in the box.
It is goofed up now and needs to be reloaded but I have no media.
Has anyone else seen this packaging inconsistency in their purchases?
    Thanks

Since it's very hard to "goof up" a Mac (though based on what I've been reading, people certainly give it a try), let's find out what's wrong before you attempt brain surgery.  I swear to FSM, people around here want to cut off limbs instead of applying a bandage to paper cut.
Furthermore, if all else fails, we can walk you through the method of restoring Lion, though you should be able to find the way to do it just by a quick search of the support area.

  • Unable to reset SMC on late 2011 MBP

Hi, I have a late 2011 17" MBP and I was trying to do a SMC reset (to solve some audio related problems I'm having).
I followed the instruction on the Apple documentation. But when I pressed the key combination, the MagSafe light didn't change.
I've done SMC reset before and I remember the color of the light changed previously.
    Any ideas?

    dacoolest,
if you’re unwilling to accept what their documentation states, that following their instructions will reset the SMC, then I can only suggest contacting Apple to ask if there’s a “for sure” method that would meet your standard of proof.

  • Hardware upgrade of Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011.

    Hello there.
I am thinking to upgrade my MBP 13" late 2011 (2.4 GHz Intel Core i5)
This is what I am planning to do:
    Replace the RAM with: 2 x Corsair DDR3 SO-DIMM 1066MHz 4GB MAC (http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=638190)
Replace the stock 500 GB Toshiba HDD (5400) with: Neutron Series™ GTX 120GB SATA 3 6Gb/s SSD
    (http://www.corsair.com/en/ssd/neutron-series-gtx-ssd/neutron-series-gtx-120gb-sa ta-3-6gbps-ssd.html)
Also considering to replace the optical drive / CD reader with the same SSD (at later point).
    What I hope to gain:
-Much faster performing MBP in terms of opening Applications, Sleep/Awake, write/rerad speeds etc.
    -Better battery life
    -Less noise
-And in general see the spinning beach ball less : )
Is this upgrade worth it or is there a better choice of RAM and SSD? What is your opinion and advice?
P.S I am going to do the upgrade beginning of 2013.
    Thanks in advance.

The correct RAM for a late 2011 13" MBP is '2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM'.  What you show  is slower  RAM that would for a 2010 MBP.  If you run applications that require the additional RAM, certainly there will be a performance increase.  You might even consider 16GB of RAM but only if you have applications that can utilize it.  RAM that is not used is useless.
The installation of a SSD will enhance the MBP's performance, especially in reduced boot times as well as the other virtues you have mentioned.  I personally think that SSDs are still too expensive and the capacities that are available are still inadequate for my needs.  This is not to suggest that you should not get one, but I am not in a position to give you any meaningful advice on this issue.  Perhaps anther forum participant will see this and share his/her knowledge with you.
    Ciao.
