9850 White Screen during OS upgrade

After losing power during a security wipe (long story) i've tried several methods to either reload the OS to my BlackBerry 9850 or just wipe it to start from scratch. In each instance, the device can boot to 3/4 of the white bar and then will go to a completely blank screen. This will stay indefinitely until power loss.
1) through my Mac BBDM: when the OS is not detected, I try to upgrade and as the device is initializing, it goes to the white screen and the BBDM eventually says the upgrade was a failure.
2) through mac Terminal: I've tried a factory reset through Terminal using the "./bbdm resettofactory". It gives me a message of "RIM Software" or something to that effect but doesn't seem to reset the device at all.
3) through VirtualBox running windows: I've tried connecting my device this way and though the device appears on the VirtualBox software (it says a RIM Blackberry device is connected via USB), neither BBSAK or AppLoader.exe will detect the device to let me wipe it or go through the AppLoader process.
Any ideas out there? I figure there's got to be a way to force detection such that I might wipe the device to a factory state so that I might then reload the OS.
Device info
Your carrier: It was bought from US Cellular but I am using it with a SIM card in the UK.
Model info and OS version (Go to Settings, then Options, then about): OS 7.1
Apps and free space
Did a battery pull fix your issue? No.
When writing your question
Good description of what is really wrong and how to reproduce if possible. Details of what you did before: Again, I was trying a security wipe after some software issues made me want to start from scratch and the device lost power before the wipe was completed.

Hello,
Given all you describe, I do not think it can be recovered via a MAC. You will need a PC. After you've arranged such access, I recommend the following.
1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below. This is likely moot in your situation.
2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Now, try these tricks:
KB10144 How to force the detection of the BlackBerry smartphone using Application Loader
KB27956 How to recover a BlackBerry smartphone from any state

If any suggest an Update Website, substitute please either the Desktop Software or LOADER.EXE.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Older Version MacBook White Screen During Use

My MacBook (early 2009) keeps getting a white screen during use for anywhere from 15-90 seconds. Is this normal? What can I do to fix it? Or is the computer just too old and I should get a new one?

I have 24 inch iMac and I get either an almost black screen/white screen or sometimes a green and white vertical pinstriped screen. This happens suddenly with no warning & I have to hold the start button in to shut down. It then starts up fine with apparently no harm done. It is very annoying but I need to know why my Apple is doing this. Computer is around 2-3 years old and now running 10.6.8. I had to buy this as when I inherited the machine know one knew where the OS software was.
Does anyone rate Genius bar - can they determine what the prob is? I took a G5 tower in as it wouldn't start but they were unable to help - local PC shop sorted it charging me £100 - realised later it needed a new battery (£7) so you can't rely on anyone out there I'm afraid!
I will need a new iMac 27 inch anytime soon but am loath to give anyone currently selling machines the money!

  • Stuck on white screen during reboot after installing Snow Leopard

I had no problem with installation, but am stuck on the white screen during automatic reboot. I manually ejected the disc hoping that would help. I am not sure how to get past this white screen of death. I tried to reset the PRAM but nothing I do will get me past the white screen.

I am having this problem right now. It just goes to white screen during the installation right after rebooting. Just before rebooting it tells me to be 'ready' with the second disc, but then reboots and goes to white screen with apple logo and spinning gears....am I supposed to be putting the second disc in at this stage? Shouldn't it be prompting me to do something? Did either of you figure a way around this? Any help much appreciated.

  • White screen during start up

I shut down my 21 inch desktop the proper way and when I went to turn it back on I end up with a white screen. You can hear the chime like usual, but then I get a white screen. When I shut it down, it was working properly. What could wrong and how can I fix it?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First boot into Safe Mode, if this does not work boot into both a SMC and PRAM reset several times back to back. Follow the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If that does not work then please carefully read the rest of Apple's instructions in Gray screen appears during startup

  • White Screen During Shut Down

    Hi all,
When I try to shut down my system I am presented with a white screen and have to push the power button on my iMac to turn it off. This has only started happening recently as far as I recall.
Any ideas as to what is going on?
    Currently running OS 10.8.2.
    Thanks,

I have had the same problem, and connected it to a problem with Western Digital HD software.  I use an external WD HD for time machine purposes.
I then uninstalled all the HD software, and it now seems everything works fine.  You may try this. Ref this article:

What do you see on the iPod screen, when you plug in to the PC?
    My suggestions,
Charge only using High Power USB2.0 port at the back of your PC and not the low power USB 1.1 port at the front of the PC.
Change the USB cable, (maybe it is broken)
    Try a wall charger.
    Have a nice day!

  • White screen after I upgraded to snow lepoard

I recently try to upgrade my Mac system to Snow Leopard. It showed up on my screen and began to upload. It restarted itself now it will not come off the white screen with the apple. Why is it doing this?

is there anything besides power, keyboard and mouse plugged in?  if so, remove all the other stuff.  if you're still hanging at the apple logo screen, put the SL DVD back in (if you ejected it) and restart the computer holding "C" to start form the install disc.  run disc utility  and see if it finds/fixes a problem.

  • White Screen during Startup

Everything was working fine on the Mac until about an hour ago when I tried to install software updates and then the screen fades and a message pops up saying the computer needs to be restarted by holding down the power button.
After doing that, the computer is now stuck on a blank white screen every time it is restarted. FYI, there is no external hard drive connected to the computer. Here's what I have tried thus far to troubleshoot:
Completely disconnect from the electrical outlet and restart.
Restart with the OSX Install disc in (also tried this holding down "c", both times just goes straight to white screen and won't do anything else)
Tried resetting PRAM (it made the second chime but still wont go past the white screen)
Restart in single-user mode and safe mode (still just stuck on the white screen)
Tried restarting with any USB cables disconnected
Tried restarting with the Ethernet cord disconnected while holding down the D key per the instructions in the "Everything Mac" book (only thing connected was the keyboard + mouse)
NONE of this has worked or caused any different result, it's still just showing a blank white screen.
Can anyone suggest another possible solution or cause for this problem?
    Thanks!

My iMac is brand new, barely 2 months old. I've been getting the white screen quite often at startup. The only way I can get past it is to hold down power and reboot. One thing I've noticed... I'm pretty sure it only happens when I have external drives connected. If I shut down with my hard drives mounted and restart, I tend to get a white screen. If I disconnect them, startup is perfectly fine. I'd hate to have to disconnect Time Machine every time I power down, though. What a pain. Just installed Snow Leopard; perhaps it will fix this (though it did not, sadly, fix the missing "new mail" sound, so who knows)?

  • White Screen During Windows 7 Installation

    HI guys.
I am trying to install windows 7 using bootcamp on my macbook pro mid 2012 after deleting a previous install and everything goes fine until bootcamp partitions the drive and then begins to restart to boot into the Windows installation..
When it reboots I get a white screen and nothing happens.. windows does not boot.
I try instead to create an ISO image and boot from a flash drive and the same thing happens..
If anybody has any experience with this or knows the solution to the problem I'd appreciate the help.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Turn off your Mac holding the Power button, and then, turn it on and hold the Option (Alt) key until you see all bootable volumes in the display. If you see Windows, choose it. Does it start properly?

  • Stuck at white screen during shutdown

My new macbook pro 13inch is taking forever to shut down. When i clicked the shutdown button, everything goes on as per normal till it reaches the white screen with the roller and it just stays there forever, draining battery till I force shut it down. Any ideas on why is this happening and and solution? Thanks in advance for all your help! (:

Hi. Thanks for your prompt reply! I'm not too sure on how to go about looking for entries that might indicate a hang but i've attached a screenshot of the console and would you kindly help me take a look? Thanks! (:

  • IMac Freezes at white screen during startup

    Hello,
I was off of my iMac for an hour or two so my screen saver when on.  I went to wake the computer and it was frozen.  I tried using the keyboard and mouse to wake up the computer from the screen saver, but it would not work, so I powered the iMac down manually from the button on the back.  I let it sit for 15 minutes, then I tried to start the computer up again.  Now at start up, I get to a blank white screen with the spinning moving pin wheel, and that is it.  Any suggestions?

You could try to use SafeBoot mode on startup, essentially you'd hold the Shift
key down on startup, perhaps you may need to login after waiting quite awhile,
then continue holding the shift key down until you see a traditional desktop.
And then use Disk Utility to verify HDD, & repair disk permissions.+ Restart.
Or if you have a system install-restore DVD, boot from that and have the
Installer's version of Disk Utility check verify repair the hard disk drive.
It can also repair disk permissions, too, from the booted version of D.U.
Then when it is done, choose the startup disk from installer menu options.
The DVD should eject, but if not, it should be ignored as a boot volume
after you've chosen the Mac HD as a boot system.
PS: If your computer is now running a system later than Snow Leopard,
where no DVD would be needed if it has a Recovery partition in the HDD
then you could see about booting into Recovery (command + R) to access
the later system's OS X Utilities, and choose Disk Utility to check/repair, etc.
    These may help.
    Good luck!
