A CS4 Question re: Quicktime

I have a client who needs my video files as Quicktime.  I have discovered much to my dispair, that when I export to Adobe Media Encoder I experience a quick rejection of the timeline and it results in a green check as having finished.  That is not the case.  I'm coming off a camera that produces .mts files, edit in Matrox SD.  My exprort is Quicktime NTSC DV; video codec is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC.   Does anyone have a clue what I'm overlooking or doing wrong.
Chuck

Your QuickTime 7 Pro registration will continue to work until QT 8 is installed. Any updates don't remove a version 7 key. The warning is for older Pro users.
No answer to the "autoplay" problem. Maybe a corrupted .plist file.

  • Soundbooth CS4 Problem with Quicktime MOV files

I know that Soundbooth CS4 should support Quicktime MOV files but I just get a placeholder image and the video doesn't play.  What should I do?  I don't know if it is an issue with Quicktime or with Soundbooth.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

It's probably an incompatible codec in the QT. If the audio isn't AC3 and on a separate track from the video this can happen. There are still a few applications out there that will write the audio into the video track, and QT will still play it that way.
Are you attempting to edit video with Soundbooth?
If you are it's not a good idea.
You really should be using Premiere or Efter Effects to edit video, and leave Soundbooth for audio work.
If you have QT Pro, try extracting the audio from the MOV and save THAT as an MOV of just the audio. SB should have no problem opening that/

  • Odd CS4 Question

Well maybe not so odd... It seems that there are quite a few CS4 questions...
Anyway here we go. I just got Production Premium CS4 yesterday. I have been using CS3 for a while now. I have a HDV project that was started in CS3 and I installed CS4 and opened the project without any problems. It went through and re-conformed all the footage again but that was not a big deal. The wierd thing is that I cannot get my computer to recognize PPro CS4 as a program used to open my project. Let me see if I can explain it a little better. When I opened my project folder it showed the xxx.prproj file but is did not have a program associated with it, so I just opened up PPro CS4 and then selected the file and waited for everything to re-conform and then I saved the project. I thought that would have taken care of it. I looked back in the file and the xxx.prproj file still had no program associated with it. OK, so I go into properties and where is says "Opens with" I clicked on "Change" Went through my programs and found PPro CS4 and double click on it, only it does not put it in the list of programs to choose from. So I go thought it again and clik on Photoshop. It puts that in the list to choose from. Same goes for IE, or any other program that I click on but for some reason when I select PPro CS4 it does not put it in the list for me to be able to use that program to open that file.
Skip to today (all the above was yesterday). I open PPro CS4 this morning and select the project file and it has to go thorough all the files and re-conform everything again. It was not a big deal to me yesterday because I figured it was the first time opening it in the new program so OK, but now it is annoying because there are a lot of files and it takes a while to get it all done. I still cannot seem to get my computer to associate PPro CS4 with this file for some reason...
Any help would be greatly appreciate....
    FYI
    Windows XP Pro 64 bit
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.5 GHz
    4 GB Ram
1 TB project drive (Only project on there)
    Thanks
    Phil

OK I got it to work... Man am I tired of messing with this thing...
What I did was the steps above that Bill Hunt pointed out, but when I got to the pproj file type I clicked on "Advanced" then from there I went to Actions and clicked on "New" then I just browsed for PProCS4 and you have to name the action so I named it Open.
Then I closed it down and right clicked on my project file and clicked on "Open With" then it magically allowed me to pick Premiere as the associated program. Everything is working just fine now...
Hopefully if anyone else has this problem this will help you out...
    Phil

  • Another question about Quicktime 7 on 10.6.5

    Hello everyone,
I have just transferred my files from my G4 to my new Intel iMac via Target Firewire and I was surprised to see that iMovie 6.04 transferred over fine even though the new OS has the latest iLife 11. Many in this forum said that this could not be done without deleting iLife 11 and then installing iMovie 6 and then reinstalling iLife 11. Or using Terminal which I was prepared to do.
I also just transferred all my saved iMovie 6 projects (the actual movies) from my old External Hard Drive to my new External Drive. I didn't have them on my main hard drive because of the space involved. I also downloaded Quicktime 7.6.6 just in case I needed it for these older movies.
I opened up an iMovie 6 movie and it worked fine but I noticed that it now uses Quicktime X instead of QT 7.6 when you convert the movie to QT. Also when you" get info" in the "show package contents" you see QT X. My question is that is this the same experience others have seen and that the new QT X is now normally used even for older iMovie 6 movies?
    Thanks for your help. Rich

    First question:
When you double click (Open via the Finder) QuickTime X will attempt to open the file. If it can't (file type, file extension or codec issue) it will ask you to install QuickTime Player (if not already installed) or prompt you to open the file using QuickTime Player.
    Second question:
Only QuickTime Player can be upgraded to "Pro". QuickTime X has a much more limited file export option.
QTVR can't be opened by X. QuickTime Player Pro can export using many more options (filters). It can also add annotations (meta data). Many "older" supported QuickTime formats and codecs are not supported in X.
Use both versions for the best experience.

  • Codec question about Quicktime

    Greetings All,
I've been rumaging through the help files here at Adobe as well as the internet in general and haven't been able to find the answers I'm looking for so I'm hoping someone here can help.
Before I get in to the questions, a little background on what I'm doing...forgive me if I get a bit long winded here as I try to explain.  In the smallest nutshell possible, basically I've been creating some short videos, both from Maya animations I've created (I'm a college art student among other things) as well as some pretty basic home videos taken with various camcorders (2 digital one older Video 8 converted to digital).  Until recently I've been using Premeire CS3 for creating my videos and I have been exporting to the Quicktime format with the Sorenson 3 codec.  As I'm using my little video files for multiple uses (computer playback and DVD authoring, etc) and as I'm doing this on both PC's and Mac's (I use PC's at home but have to use Mac's at school), the Sorenson 3 codec has provided the BEST quality of anything I've tried so far on both PC's and Mac's...and having the files reasonably sized has been a bonus of course. Also, I'm not doing anything "Hi Def" here...the files are basically DV standard - 720x480 (although some of them do get played back on a big projector screen in a couple of classrooms at the college...they've still looked great though).
So far, so good...except that I recently purchased a small Sony digital camcorder (a DCR-SX44 in case it matters) and it seems that Premeire CS3 will not recognise the .mpg files from the new Sony.  From what I gather, it has something to do with the audio format that Sony uses.  Either way I picked up a used copy of Premeire CS4 from a friend at school (couldn't go with cs5 because I'm still running Windows XP 64 here at home and CS5 apparently wants Windows 7). While it will load the mpgs from the Sony just fine, all of a sudden the export video I'm creating with the Quicktime/Sorenson 3 looks REALLY bad.  In fact, after playing around with this for the past couple of weeks, I can't really find a codec, either AVI or Quicktime that produces anywhere near the same quality as the Sorenson thru CS3 (including the H.264).  It's also worth noting that where this problem is -really- evident is with text, intros and credits and such...the text looks really awful now, although the degridation in the actual video is quite apparent as well.  Which leads me to the questions...
1.)  What the devil happened that the Sorenson 3 looks like crap in CS4?  It seems to be the EXACT same codec, so I can only assume that somehow Premeire or this Adobe Media Encorder are somehow handling the codec differently or something.
2.)  ANY suggestions as to how to fix this...either with the Sorenson 3 or another codec?
I'm starting to think this isn't actually a codec issue as much as something with either Premeire or AME...somehow the video is getting mucked up a bit before it actually get's to the codec stage of the encoding.  If the Sorenson 3 is the same codec I've been using (and it still works great in CS3) that would seem to indicate it's not actually the codec itself but something else...either in Premeire or AME...although I'm not sure where to begin looking.
So that said, again in a nutshell...Premeire CS3 with Sorenson 3 - great video quality (with both the videos and the animation).  CS4 with virtually any codec I've tried (and I've tried -a lot-) mediocre to terrible quality.  -Why-?
I'm grateful for any suggestions that folks may have here.

I appreciate your comment...thank you.  While DVD isn't really my primary concern...mostly just being able to play the files on PC's and Macs so I can show them at school and such as well as a Youtube vid here and there (which is a different can of worms), with the CS3 you can actually see the difference in quality with the Sorenson on DVD.  I actually just burned a DVD for my father with a Maya animation I recently did and I also put an older animation on the disk as well...the older animation had been created with uncompressed AVI and the new one with the Sorenson 3 and there was actually a rather significant difference...we watched it on my Dad's 37" flat panel and the Sorenson quality was noticably much better.
BTW...I tried the Animation option for Quicktime with the CS4 after watching a Youtube tut...nadda...quality was awful (although I don't know about that with the CS3).  I had forgot to mention in the original post though...yes, the Maya animations are REALLY affected by whatever is causing this.  That's how I got turned on to the Sorenson in the first place as my Maya teacher had suggested it.  The AVI's I did for the Maya animations looked decent enough here at home (I think I had used Video 1 back then) but they really looked like crap on the Macs at school.  They were pretty simple animations and I rendered them in Maya at really outragous quality...pretty much max settings on everything using Mental Ray at 1600x1200 but the actual vid just kept coming off soft and fuzzy...lacking any sharpness, until I started using the Sorenson.
That said, after a bit more experimentation this morning, I've found that the DV NTSC setting under Microsoft AVI is actually doing a pretty decent job (with video..haven't tried any Maya stuff there yet)...on my PC at least.  Won't be able to check it on a Mac for a couple of days though (obviously I've had -a lot- of problems with AVI's on Macs).
Now...you said that you've "heard here that there was a change in par in cs4 to deal with some standards"...could you (or someone) possibly elaborate on that a little?
    Thanks

  • Clip Notes in CS4: questions about streaming

I've used Clip Notes before with small, embedded files, but this is my first time with a large video that I want to stream on a server. Maybe someone can answer a few questions:
Where do I name the movie file? The export dialog only has a place to name the PDF.
How does the URL setting work? The documentation simply says "This is where your video file is located" but that puts the cart before the horse. How can I specify the name and location of a movie that hasn't been created yet and for which I have no control over the name? The FTP feature works great, but it's for upload only, not for naming.
After exporting the movie and PDF, is there a way to re-generate the PDF w/o having to re-export the movie? I realized I wanted to make some changes to the PDF only (like instructions and URL), and exporting another movie will take time that isn't necessary.
I learned here earlier that only the QuickTime option will provide player controls. But a big .mov requres a streaming server, which I don't have. The .wmv option has the opposite problem. Does anyone know of a workaround (or other method entirely) that will use Flash video? FLV or F4V will do progressive downloading with small file sizes for online viewing.

Where do I name the movie file? The export dialog only has a place to name the PDF.
The name you assign to the PDF is also assigned to the exported movie file, regardless of whether you use QT or WMV. So, if you set the name of the PDF in the Export Settings to "clipnotes.pdf", the video will be either "clipnotes.mov" or "clipnotes.wmv", depending on the format you've chosen.
How does the URL setting work? The documentation simply says "This is where your video file is located" but that puts the cart before the horse. How can I specify the name and location of a movie that hasn't been created yet and for which I have no control over the name? The FTP feature works great, but it's for upload only, not for naming.
See above. Since you now know what the filename will be, you just have to decide where the file will reside on your server, and input this into URL field. Using our example from above, you'd use enter something like "http://www.mysite.com/upload/clipnotes.mov". It's a full URL, with the "http://" needed; just change the pertinent details.
After exporting the movie and PDF, is there a way to re-generate the PDF w/o having to re-export the movie? I realized I wanted to make some changes to the PDF only (like instructions and URL), and exporting another movie will take time that isn't necessary.
Maybe, though I haven't tested this:
    Trash the original PDF file.
Temporarily rename your originally-exported movie file, or move it to a different folder so that it's not overwritten.
Set your export range to one frame, using the same settings and same name that you did for your first export, and restart the export.
Throw away the new movie file, and rename the original or move it back to it's original folder. Since the only connection the PDF has to the movie file is the URL and filename, this should work.
I don't think you need a streaming server; I've tested QuickTime off a regular ol' HTTP server and it works fine. Incidentally, I should add, QuickTime streaming WASN'T working for me previously, at all. I just tried it out, and it would seem that a recent update to Adobe Reader might have fixed the issue. Streaming WMV always worked fine. Curious.
As far as Flash: are you talking about using Flash Video in ClipNotes, or just Flash Video viewing online, in general? At this time, ClipNotes is QuickTime or WMV only, but I wouldn't be suprised if Flash Video makes an appearance in ClipNotes CS5, given the whole focus on Flash in the Adobe ecosystem. If you're talking about general FLV playback, check out the JW FLV Media Player; it's an fairly simple-to-configure Flash Video player that can be embedded into a webpage.

  • A few new Illustrator CS4 questions.

Weird, I just can't figure these out.
First, how do you change the document size/orientation when it's already open? This seemed to be a cinch in all other versions of Illustrator, but now... the new Document set-up menu is quite different.
Related, how does one ADD or SUBTRACT art boards from a document? And remove the art board guides when activated?
How does one prevent Illustrator from opening all documents/a new document, in the same window box, and instead in a separate window box?
If these questions seem rudimentary, let me assure you that I might be having a spaz moment with the new CS4 version of Illustrator, but I've been using the program itself for 10+ years. Maybe I'm becoming lazy and/or senile?

"I have a complex file I created in photoshop with many layers, containing
gradients and blends with no background layer, cropped and feathered edges and
100 opacity. I want to use this for a design in Illustrator CS4 but not at 100%
as I want to type over the top and be able to read. If I simply change the
opacity then the background color in illustrator changes the look of the PS
file. I have tried everything I know, including going back to PS and changing it
there, but the same results. What I ultimately want is a lighter version of the
PS file that is not transparent and allows color behind it to affect the over
vibrancy of the PS file. I'm sure there is a way, but since my knowledge is all
self taught I just don't know the answer. Sure could use some help. Thanks

  • Really dumb question re Quicktime Pro

    Good morning . .
My Mac is running OS 10.4.9 and I have updated my Quicktime player to 7.3.1.
Purchased Quicktime PRO, registered successfully but still only get Quicktime Player when opening the program. Any suggestions where to find QT Pro? Sorry for the dumb question but thanks for your help.
    Jon

There is no separate QT Pro application. Successfully registering Pro enables Pro features already present in the Player. Items that previosly mentioned Pro should now just list the feature without mentioning Pro.

  • Quick question about Quicktime media keys.......

I had a question about encoding video and media keys. It seems to me that the only codec that allows you to encode it with a media key is Sorenson (Sorenson 3 I think). Why are they the only ones that are enabling that in their codecs? Is it kind of a dying technology or practice? I've experimented with Sorenson 3 and Sorenson Squeeze trials and, even though it looks ok, it simply doesn't stack up to others like Apple's H.264 or open-source x264 or even Xvid. I guess I wish there were a way to be able to use media key options with all the new H.264 codecs. Is it possible to do that, either with Xcode or AppleScript? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

QuickTime has supported 'media keys" since version 3 but you can only add them using the third party software.
You would be better served by contacting Sorenson and asking them about their support for newer codecs.

  • Question Re. Quicktime 7.04 Software Update

    Hi All,
I have a question in regards to the 7.04 software update. I am running QT Pro 7.02. I read the disclaimer:
QuickTime 7.0.4 is an important release that delivers numerous bug fixes, support for iLife '06, and H.264 performance improvements. This update is highly recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.
Important Notice to QuickTime Pro Users
Installation of QuickTime 7 will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 5 or QuickTime 6. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a new QuickTime 7 Pro key to regain QuickTime Pro functionality. After installation, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro key.
My question is, do I have to purchase a new Quicktime Pro 7 key if I install the 7.04 update? It states that installation will disable QT 5 or 6 Pro functionality but does not specify what will happen if you already own QT Pro 7.
One other question off topic, when I launch QT lately to play a clip, the clip does not automatically play even though I have "automatically play movies when opened" check boxed in my QT preferences. Why might this be occuring? It was fine up until a few weeks ago.
    thank you, J

Your QuickTime 7 Pro registration will continue to work until QT 8 is installed. Any updates don't remove a version 7 key. The warning is for older Pro users.
No answer to the "autoplay" problem. Maybe a corrupted .plist file.

  • Hard Drive, Bridge CS4 QUESTION

Yesterday my Seagate 1 TB hard drive (fairly new) was acting strange in relationship to Bridge CS4.  Bridge was having problems reading the files from it and the light on the hard drive was dimming and brightening up in repetitive fashion.  I always back up, but just got back from Africa and have about 4000 images on that drive yet to be backed up, so this scares me.
Strange thing is that when I go to the drive through Windows (XP) the drive acts fine and the images come up fine and they come up fine in PS too.  So this makes me wonder if this is an issue with Bridge.  I have had some Bridge issues in the past and have thought about re installing PS and Bridge.
Question is: do you think the problem is with Bridge as apposed to the hard drive?
    Thank you.

It could be due to the process of indexing the new files.
Is your cache big enough? Have you purged it lately?

  • Photoshop CS4 question   (Tiles)

    Sirs,
I have tried asking the Photoshop CS4 technical support a question which they are so far unable to answer - perhaps this forum can provide an answer.
The question: Located within Photoshop CS4 there is the option to install "Bigger Tiles". Several technical websites have stated that in is important to install the bigger tiles to improve the performance of CS4 and not installing causes Cs4 to run slower and less efficiently. So what is Adobe's opinion on installing the bigger tiles?  To be clear - the option to install is included within Cs4 and the tiles are not an external 3rd party application - I say this to be clear since your technical support on the phone (4 times) had never heard of  Bigger Tiles.

What follows refers specifically to CS4, but it's not from Adobe at all.  Just passing this on, for whatever it may be worth:
Be clear on this: Adobe’s advice as of January 2009 is stale. Plugins  that Adobe either doesn’t enable or even include by default are critical  to performance!
Use the Bigger Tiles plugin in conjunction with DisableScratchCompress plugin.  Failure to use these plugins results in a penalty of up to 50% on Mac OS X in any “decent” configuration (over  100% for Photoshop CS3). It’s bizarre that Adobe calls these  “legacy” plugins, because they have a massive performance impact. Download the Plugins
    Bigger Tiles is critical
The Bigger Tiles plugin in  particular is absolutely critical to performance in most cases,  especially with large files. Using Photoshop CS4 11.0.1, I measured  these bizarre results with and without Bigger Tiles on both a 2.8GHz 2008 Mac Pro and a 2.93GHz 2009 Mac Pro  Nehalem. I confirmed with Rob-Art at barefeats.com that same behavior; the culprit seems  to be the Smart Sharpen function, which  runs far more slowly without Bigger Tiles.
Even if the scratch disk is not being used (no disk  writes are observed),  using the Bigger Tiles plugin is essential.
Possible exception: if you use files with numerous (50  or more) layers, Bigger Tiles might or might not help, or could be  slower. Test your own particular workflow.

  • Media Encoder CS4 Question

I use the CS4 media encoder quite a bit for creating FLV content for my web site.  However, I noticed that the encoder crashed on me the other day with an error pointing to the media cache.  Is it OK to clear the media cache once a week, so I avoid any corrupted files.  What are the best practices in emptying the media cache?  I know After Effects has a menu option for emptying the media cache, but Media Encoder doesn't.  Any help you can give will be appreciated.

Man, the link's explanation is more complex than the question!

  • Export  Premiere Pro CS4 file into QuickTime Movie

    Hello!
I am a student at the Art Institute Online program.  I am taking a video editing class using Premiere Pro CS4.  I successfully completed my video which needs to be saved to display in Quicktime; however, I am not able to upload the file to my class discussion because the file is too large.  The size of my Tfile zipped is 169,761 KB. Is there anything anyone can recommend?
    Thanks much,
    Annette

You need to reduce the bitrate to reduce the file size.
It is okay to then ZIP the file to make it even smaller for uploading to a server, however people will have to then download it and unzip it to watch.
You will also find links to many free tutorials in the PremiereProPedia that will quickly show you how things are done in Premiere Pro.

  • Premiere CS4 playback .mov (quicktime file) in Mac

    Hi,
I recently acquired CS4 and the latest loaded Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz. I have problem with playing back .mov file - which obvisouly main NLE format for Mac. I've been testing with 15 seconds 1920 x 1080 clip - size about 150 MB which I transcoded from AVCHD via Cineform/TMPGEnc (PC)/VoltaicHD. Regardless of any transcoders I use, when I playback the file in the Source window, video is stuttered and very choppy. Rendering certainly helps that I can play nicely in the timeline but the major problem is that I cannot work with multi-cam monitor on. With only two .mov clips on multi-cam, it is way too stuttered and choppy that there's no way I can work with.  HDV footages captures directly from my Z5U works flawless even with editing mult-cam monitor - which obviously not .mov file. I even tested the same clip transcoded into .avi and it plays back nicely with multi-camera monitor on my old PC (Core2 2.0 GHz) running Premiere Pro 2.0. Thought it is Premiere Memory Management issue dealing with quicktime file (.mov).
Does anyone has the same issue working with .mov file for editing multi-cam? I'm so stressed out for the last few days - I want to go back to FCP instead. Thanks!
    Jun

    Dan,
Forget about using CS4 for multicam HDV streaming. I decided to go
back FCP 6. I tried all the intermediate codec with various file sizes
for playing back multicam stream in CS4 but none of them working.
Either playing back is very choppy stuttered or doesn't play back at
all.  CS4 is not the right program for Mac. Funny thing is it works
flawlessly on PC which is less powered than my Macbook Pro. They
shoudnt release it for Mac.  Sorry I couldnt help you much. Please let
me know if you find a solution for this.  Good luck.
