A few questions. Opinions from the community would be appreciated.

I briefly touched over this in the introduction thread. Assuming you did not read that though.
I am more or less entirely new to Linux, I put Ubuntu on my system no more than a week ago being recommended it as a beginners Linux. I have little to no experience with Linux at all.
That being said..
I am extremely interested in learning Linux inside and out. Computers, hardware and software both are a huge passion of mine.
After some reading I've found very mixed opinions from others about Arch, many describe it as a Linux for experienced "geek" users. While I've been told by others that if I want to use Arch I should just jump into it because they used "insert distro here" for "insert number of years here" and when making the move they realized all of the years spent on other simpler distros didn't really teach them anything anyway. So I would like the communities opinion on the matter, if Arch users agree with the former or latter.
Now the second, possibly more important question. I don't have Internet on the computer I will be installing Arch on at the moment. I haven't really been able to find a whole lot over the matter and I wasn't sure if that would be an issue when I get Internet back and I'm possibly stuck with just a terminal. I don't want to screw myself over or anything so I wanted to ask here first.
I hope my questions weren't too annoying, and appreciate any help I get.

Yes, but with arch that may be made more explicit as "you have to go get what you want, it will not be brought to you."
Indeed. No fancy software centers or GUI package managers here. You want something? Find the package, install it and configure it. Fortunately, the wiki works great both for installation of the OS and in almost every post-install matters. But anyway x0r.h4, you'll need an internet connection on a rolling release distro.
x0r.h4 wrote:Fully understandable. I've noticed most people who move to a new distro have been using other distros for years already.
Ive ran across far less people who are new to Linux entirely.
I've used Ubuntu long enough now to know that although I dont hate it by any means like so many others have expressed that they do, I don't necessarily "love" it per say. It's a great OS in my opinion, but like you already stated its very much like Windows. I still felt most of the same restrictions you get from Windows along with a generally Windowy feel to it. I didnt really feel like a Linux user using Ubuntu and Unity.
That's mainly why I stopped using *buntu and Mint. I wanted an OS which gave me total freedom to add, remove and create; and even though *buntu and Mint are not bad OS they are pretty restrictive. I tried openSUSE and had the same problem, but although I was running Debian for a couple months and I learnt a lot it still wasn't what I wanted. In that way, Arch is just what the doctor ordered for me. I allows me to build my "own OS" from scratch and set it up my way.
x0r.h4 wrote:I know I want a more "free" distro, I love the "you get what you want and nothing more" attitude. I just wasnt sure if it was a bad place to start seeing as Arch has a bit of a reputation for being a more difficult distro.
That's the spirit All you need is the will to learn. You will have a better knowledge of how Linux works "behind the scenes", it'll give you more flexibility as an user and a bit of a sense of what is to really administrate an OS. The distro it's pretty easy to use, but the first hours for an unexperienced user (by first hours I mean installing the system, configuring it and run the basic post-install routines) can be pretty rough. Still, if you follow the wiki you should have no problem.
Again, my advice is to not install Arch on a computer without internet connection, but if you can solve that then if I were you I would go right for it.

If I purchase an unlocked iPhone 5 from the USA, would I be able to use the phone in Australia?

Yes - unlocked means unlocked, but if there is a problem that requires an exchange under warranty, the warranty would be honored in the US only. You would need to return to the US for an exchange under warranty.

You can't. The streams are uneditable even to the mods and admins. It's an ongoing data collection. You can only hide stuff by marking it as read in the relevant areas like your Inbox.

  • Exclude few document numbers from the load

    Hi All,
I am trying to load data from a datasource in R3, (its a FM generic datasource). There are millions of records but I want to exclude few document numbers from the load. Does anyone know how to exclude? I have that field name in the selections
    Thanks in advance,
    shresh.

    Hi Shreesh,
EIther you can write a Routine at the Infopackage level or do the FULL load upto PSA & then you can restrict the data by writing a start routine in the Transformation between this Datasource & your Data Target like
DELETE SOURCE_PACKAGE where SOURCE_FIELDS-ABC = "give your restriction here"
where ABC is the Source field name.
    Hope it helps!

if i buy an iphone 6 without contract from the US, would it work in other countries with non-US carriers?

Contract free versus SIM free are different. What you want to do is to wait for Apple to sell the SIM free version of the iPhone 6. See this explanation from the Apple 5S page that details this...
If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile. If you buy a SIM-free iPhone, you will need to purchase a GSM-compatible nano-SIM card separately. In the United States, you can purchase such a SIM from AT&T or T-Mobile. When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier.
Also be aware warranty service is country specific. So if you buy a phone in the US and it develops problems you would need to return it for service in the US...

Download/install an app is a know possible solution.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If all user-installed apps are not launching, it could be an Apple ID authorization issue. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information.
Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.

  • From the Community: Overview of requested additional functionality

    Hello,
I believe it makes sense if we have a more structure feedback thread in order to request specific functionality to the Microsoft Project Siena team so they can process it more easily.
    Some simple rules:
1 post or reply per request, Always check if a function isn't alreay requested or present in the application
Follow the structure as in the first post: Name, Description, Reason
Avoid replies like "yea I second", "would love to see this", etc. This is a functional thread not a discussion.
If someone from the core team could make this sticky it would be highly appreciated

    NAME
    Digital Ink
    DESCRIPTION
Ability to directly draw on the app screen, highlight or select text using the Surface Pro 3 Pen.
    REASON
Apps can be used in instructional settings.  Often, it is useful to circle or point to specific objects, or to highlight text.
    ETA
What I mean by the above, is for the Pen to perform in Siena based apps the same way it does in One Note.  Touch would be used to select things, swipe, and click; while the pen would be used to "draw" over the app. This wouldn't need to
be savable, as I'm imagining it in an instructional situation, where the SP3's display is mirrored on a projector.

  • Questions stemming from the unidirectional nature of MPLS LSP

After reading the following excerpt, I have some questions that I hope someone could clear up for me.
"An MPLS connection (LSP) is unidirectional—allowing data to flow in only one direction between two endpoints. Establishing two-way communications between endpoints requires a pair of LSPs to be established. Because 2 LSPs are required for connectivity, data flowing in the forward direction may use a different path from data flowing in the reverse direction."
Suppose I have a Network Management Station at each of the two geographically dispersed Data Centers, carrying out identical SNMP/ICMP-based monitoring against the same remote router at a third Data Center that's connected to the first two DCs via MPLS sold by the same ISP. There've been occasions when only one NMS (at say DC_A) reported the router at the third DC "down" (unreachable). Upon seeing the alert, the network operators sitting in DC_B pinged the remote router at DC_C successfully, therefore concluding the NMS was "crying wolf". I had thought it meant there's a problem with the particular MPLS circuit over there. But given the above paragraph about MPLS' unidirectionality, and the fact multiple interruptions in either forward or reverse direction could cause the NMS software to eventually conclude that the remote router has become unreachable, was my original conclusion wrong? What correct conclusions could be drawn from the aforementioned scenario of a single NMS reporting an outage at the other end of the MPLS? Furthermore, is it possible that actual business application traffic flowing through the same DC_A <=> DC_C MPLS could be unimpacted while my NMS there was alerting, due to the former taking a "different path"?

    Hello Yjdabear,
your understanding is correct in line of principle one LSP can be broken and the NMS of site A complains of connectivity failure.
testing on path site A to site C can provide a different result then test from site B to site C
To be noted that there are some tests that could be run on routers to check the health state of LSPs
    see
    http://cco.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_4t/12_4t11/ht_lspng.html#wp1054520
so there are ways to understand if LSPs between site A and site C and between site B and site C are operational
    Hope to help
    Giuseppe

  • From the Community: Tips and Tricks

    Hello,
I believe it makes sense if we have a thread where we post some key tips and tricks we have discovered during our adventures.
The intention is not to post whole applications but solutions to specific issues that might be encountered during the creation of the apps
    Some simple rules:
1 post or reply per tip, Always check if a tip isn't alreay posted
Follow the structure as in the first post: Title, Context, Tip
Avoid replies like "yea cool", "thx for this", etc. This is a functional thread not a discussion.

    Title
Playing a sound in an OnSelect
    Context
You may have the need to add an audio event to an action.
    Tip
Assuming you start from blank screen
add your sound via App Data / Media (right click for the menu)
add an "Audio" control to you screen (right top cross)
in the "Autostart" of your Audio1 put "bstart" without the quotes
in the OnSelect of the button put
    UpdateContext({bstart:false});UpdateContext({bstart:true})
So far you will then have a button that plays you that sound.
You will have to decide what to do with the action you have behind. If the action is within the same screen you can add directly after the OnSelect of the button.
Most likely you will need to move to another screen and then you should add the action in the OnEnd of your audio control
    Navigate(Screen2,ScreenTransition!Fade)
    Two remarks
You can set the visibility of your Audio1 to "false" (select the audio and go to express view "visible". If you want to select it again and toggle the visibility you can use the control drop down on the top left to select your Audio1
If you have multiple buttons you want to add the sound the safest way is to add a few other players as otherwise the OnEnd will be quite tricky if you just use one. You can safely point the audio control to the same media file but replace the bstart
I mentioned above to "bstart1" for the first, "bstart2" for the second, etc.

  • From the Community: Apps we've built

Similar to our other posting, Overview of Requested Functionality, it makes sense to me that we share in one place the apps that we have released in the store.  I believe it will help the community to see examples built, encourage others to continue
their development, and provide the Project Siena team additional insight into how their product is being used.
    Some simple rules:
    One post per app
Follow the structure in the first post: Name, Short description, Store link, Project Siena Version, Date Released, Comments
No app images - I've noticed in our other thread that it takes a long time to load and its mostly text.
Comments can be just about anything from how long, lessons learned, etc.  If you removed your app from the store, let us know and why.
Short description should not be the same as your store description.
If someone from the core team could make this sticky it would be highly appreciated.
