A strange thing about saving files in Mac OS X

I've noticed a strange thing about saving files in Mac OS X.
In the save dialog, you click a folder to save into that folder.
Well, if you accidentally click a file instead of a folder, the name of the document you're saving is changed to the name of that file! Then you have to retype the name, or cancel out of the process and start over.
I don't see why you would want to change the name of the file you're saving to the name of a file that already exists, unless you want to overwrite the existing file (unlikely), but maybe there's a reason for this I'm overlooking.

The Mac OS didn't used to do that. There must have been a lot of requests for it though. Especially from Windows switchers I would imagine, since you've always been able to do that in Windows.
Sometimes I like being able to pick up the a name I do want to replace right from the Save dialogue. Most of the time though, I think it's a dangerous option. I don't know if there's a way to turn that behavior off.

Strange things about optimized files

As far as I understand from this forum, if I "create optimized files" it will convert it to ProRes422. I use EXDCAM EX mov. I import with optimized checked. When I take a look at the info about the file in the timeline, it says EXDCAM EX Linear PCM, XDCAM EX 720p50 (35 Mb/s). When I export the the files and use current setting I get a ProRes 422 file. I would be happy if someone could explain this to me.

I've not used XDCAM in FCPX. I can only surmise that the media doesn't require optimization and you really are working with the XDCAM media. The output is ProRes regardless unless you've changed it in project properties Cmd-J. Click the little spanner in the lower right of the panel. The render output is the current settings output unless you change it to XDCAM when to export, which you can do.
Even with optimized media, the info panel still displays the original media format, not the optimized format, which I think should be changed. Ideally info should display both.

Strange thing when moving files

Since upgrading to lion have had no problems but today a really strange thing happened when moving a file by drag and drop to a usb stick.
Dragged and dropped the file no problem then dropped the stick to unmount it.
Removed the stick ok, then when looking at the desktop the stick was still there and the file was still over the stick.
The only way i could get rid of these ghost files was to reboot.
It happened everytime i did this
Any idea what maybe happening.
I tried to drag and drop the ghost files in the bin but they would not move

this sounds like a customer support case. I am not sure this can be solved on the forum unless some other users have the same problem and know how to work around it. If this is due to a platform bug then the only solution is customer support to get this fixed.

Strange thing about multiplication of several doubles

I have encountered one very strange thing as follows.
double b1 = 2006 * 365 * 24 * 60 * 60 *1000 ;
the result b1 = 642,697,216;
obviously , the result is not correct.
so I change into another way.
double b2 = 2006 * 365 ;
double b3 = 24 * 60 * 60 *1000;
double b4 = b2 * b3;
the result b4 = 6,326,121,600,000;
fortunately , it is correct.

I think you're getting integer overflow because all
your literals are ints.
Use 2006.0, 365.0 etc and see how you go.It's enough to add .0 to the first number.

InDesign complaint about saving files.

This annoys the HELL out of me. If there is a setting for this I have not found it.
Using Bridge I open an InDesign file, a business card for example, and change the name. I "Save As", change the name of the file and save. WHY IN THE HELL does ID NOT save to the folder that the file was opened FROM. Instead, it saves to the LAST folder ID saved to.
Photoshop does NOT do this.
AI does NOT do this.
Acrobat does NOT do this.
Lightroom does NOT do this.
The above apps save to the exact same file folder that that the file was opened from. You have to tell these apps to save into another location. This is logical.
As best I can tell, ID is the ONLY App that "Save As" to a last folder it's saved to, regardless of how long it been since ID's been used. I have to spend time to find a file I just saved (Most of the time searching with Bridge won't show a new file). The best way to do it is to open any ID file, click "Save As" and see where it put it. It took me a while to figure out why it was selecting the folder to save to. This makes no sense.
FIX THIS!!!!!!!! Bring ID in line with EVERY OTHER CREATIVE SUITE PROGRAM.
(I used Comic Sans because it's almost as annoying as this issue.)

Let's assume you're correct.
First, It doesn't give me the "Legacy Formate" prompt. I see this pretty often in AI. As I said above, AI saves to the folder that the file was opened from REGARDLESS. ID just saves with no warning. At the very least I should get the prompt, like I do an AI.
Second. ID is the ONLY one that does this.
Third. If it's a "safety precaution" why does AI, Photoshop etc. NOT do the same thing. At least make it consistent.
Finally. I'd love the option to turn this off.
Here's what makes me doubt your answer. Some of the files I've had this problem with I KNOW, for a fact, are NOT older versions of ID.

Problem saving files across Mac network

Hi all, hoping someone has run into this and can help—
We're running into a problem working with trying to find a way to have multiple users modify the same indd file without having to change the Sharing and Permissions on an individual file basis?

Not a server per se (and maybe that's the problem), but it's just one Intel iMac running Leopard with the InDesign files on it, and one newer iMac running Snow Leopard trying to read/work with the files. The protocol is AFP. For the second user (newer Mac) it forces a "Save As" instead of "Save" and then denies permission to overwrite the original. If they save the file locally and replace the original, the same thing then happens to the first user.
We've checked permissions on the files, and everything should be accessible. I'm wondering if the differing versions of the OS might have something to do with it, though I don't know why it would. Will upgrade anyway, but in the meantime Adobe keeps saying it's a Mac issue, and Mac keeps blaming Adobe. Thanks for taking the time to respond, btw.

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

PSE9 Saving Files Preferences, Mac

I'm having a strange problem with my new install of PSE9 on my MacBookPro. I'm trying to set the "Append File Extension" setting to always, but it keeps reverting back to never, it does keep all my other setting changes though. To make it stranger, if I start PSE after deleting the preferences file (Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Prefs.psp) it starts up with the Append File Extension set to Always, right up until I close the preferences, then it gets set to Never.
Has anyone else seen this? Any idea what could cause it and how to fix it? Its a minor annoyance, but since I work with raw image files I use this to help ensure I don't overwrite my original image.

Ok, tried again, just in case I missed a file. Deleted the files you listed
& repaired permissions. I started PSE up, loaded up a file, made a change,
had it save, and it had appended .psd, just like I wanted. I went into
Preferences and Always was selected. I made no changes, just clicked on OK.
Then I went back in, and Never was selected. So, I can get the behavior I
want, but only if I never enter the preferences.

Newbie question about saving files

Hi all,
A newbie question here, and maybe it is a dumb question, but I can't get my head around this and sofar found no answer in the forums here.
When I save a file on my macbook, I can only save it to "top" folders.
What I mean is I try to save a file for instance to documents/worddocs/lyrics just to say something, then I have to save the file first to documents, and the move it to the lyrics folder via finder or move it to :worddocs folder and then move it again to the lyrics folder. Hope you still get my drift here
Is there a way to just save it to the subfolders without going through all this moving around?

When you click File>Save As, you will see the Save As window pop up. At the top, you will see a box entitled Save As, which has a space for your to enter the file name. To the right of this box is an arrow pointing down. Click it. The full file hierarchy will be seen. Then you can save directly to the file you want.

JTextPane : strange things about getInputAttributes

Hi,
I don't understand the rules of getInputAttributes in JTextPane ; seems to be the attribute of the character before the caret, except for the first, which is the first ; but sometimes not ; it's not the same if the cursor goes from left to right or from rigth to left.
Is there somewhere some explications ?

Saving files on the same hard drive time machine is using

I was wondering how I go about saving files other than backups on the hard drive I purchased. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you haven't started your Time Machine backups yet you can partition your new drive, using one partition for Time Machine and the other for file storage. If you assign partition #1 to Time Machine you can reclaim the space on partition #2 for Time Machine at a later time.
You can follow the directions in this article. for formatting/partitioning a drive for Time Machine but you want to end up with two partitions rather than one. People with PPC Macs should substitute Apple Partition Map for GUID when following the directions.

Saving files on OS X server blows up my presentation.

I'm using Keynote 6.5.2 on a Mac using Mac OS X 10.9.5 and saving files to Mac OS X Server 10.6.8

And end up having to rebuild my presentation because opening the main .key file loses all the images and formatting. Any idea what's happening and how I can avoid?

Nothing fancy like svn. And we don't use Numbers or Pages, so although I don't have any examples of it happening, that doesn't mean it couldn't. I know those folders must have something to do with iWork's own versioning which is a feature that came out after OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server. People are used to opening and working off the server (rather than copying a file to the desktop, working on it and putting it back).

I just got my mac a month ago so go easy on me but I was just working with the pages that was already on it, and then today I know it updated, and now I am unable to open a lot of my documents!:( Idk what you mean by the icloud version lol sorry! As for the version, when I open pages from my apps and click 'about' it says version 5.1? And when I open the document it just goes grey and kind of blinks and doesnt open? I upgraded to Mavericks. Everything went smoothly. But now Excel is giving all of its warnings in what I believe is Chinese. As an example I update a file, close it, and the warning message about saving is in Chinese. Anybody else encounter this?
