A Volume Could Not Be Found

After Final Cut Express HD started crashing every time I tried to open it, I completely un-installed and then re-installed the program. It seems to open fine now, however two avi files I was using as source footage no longer open in FCE or Quicktime. In Quicktime I get an error message "The Movie Cannot Be Opened. A volume could not be found". I have tried opening the orinal avi file from the original disk in Quicktime, but still I get the same error message. Quicktime does however appear to open other avi files. Any ideas? Thanks

I installed codecs from http://perian.org

I am having problem with Time Machine. When I try to backup using Time Machine, I get an error message, " The backup volume could not be found." Strangely, Time Machine recognized the drive when setting the Time Machine preferences, but not when I backup.
If i select from the 'select disk' again and try again i get Keychain Access error 25299 and have to delete that in the Keychain for it to even get to the point of counting down to start back up
I have erased my Time Capsule recently and was starting fresh but now i cannot get time machine running again...
In the shared section of the finder the time machine backup is only appearing in the network area rather than directly there...
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks.

    Hi there.
I would suggest First Aid of your Keychain, but that hardly ever works (especially in this situation).
What I would do first, is go to ~/Library/Keychains/, grab the login.keychain and move it to the desktop. Log out, and log back in again. If that fixes it, then get the old login.keychain from the desktop and put it in the trash. (You will lose all your saved passwords for networks etc.)
If that doesn't work, unfortunately the only option would be to do an Archive & Install.
So you just need to put your 10.6 disk in again and install over the system.
Your personal data/files should still remain intact. Although I would still suggest making a backup (ironic considering the situation)
    Cheers

  • The backup volume could not be found

Spent a fair amount of time on the phone with Apple last night trying to get my Macbook Air to work with Time Machine/Time Capsule.
Symptoms of my problem included Time Machine Preferences giving the error "The backup volume could not be found"
Console messages complaining about not being able to find the MAC address for machine:
(console is accessed by clicking Go -> Utilities -> Console from the Finder, and then selecting All Messages)
11/7/08 11:06:13 AM System Preferences[123] *Time Machine failed to get MAC address for machine.*

And my only network interface was showing up as en1 (instead of en0). You can check this by using Network Utilities:
    - On the Finder main menu bar click Go -> Utilities -> Network Utilities
If "Network Interface (en0)" is not an option in the drop down list under "Please select a network interface for information" (mine was showing as en1), then the following steps will probably solve your problem:
    1) Enable the root user
    - Open the finder
    - On the Finder main menu bar click Go -> Utilities -> Directory Utility
    - On the menu bar click Edit -> Enable Root User
    - set a password (they suggested using the same password as is used for the main user account)
    2) Login as the newly enabled root user
    - Click Log Out... from the Apple menu on the main menu bar
    - select "Other" at the login screen
    - enter the user name "root" and the password you set in step 1
    3) Drag Preferences folder to the desktop
    - open the finder, and click on Macintosh HD and then Library
    - drag the Preferences folder onto the desktop
    4) Restart the computer
    - Click Restart from the Apple menu on the main menu bar
After this, the Network utility should show "Network Interface (en0)", and Time Machine should work.

    Jackson,
See this article for the reasons why you see "Time Capsule-1 does not appear to be the right volume..."
As for the error message you are getting, here are several reasons why you would see this message...
*_"Backup Volume Could Not Be Found"_*
First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states, “The backup volume could not be mounted”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
    *Reselect Your Time Machine Disk*
    (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1329)
In the Finder, go up to the "Go" menu and select "Connect to Server".
Click the "Browse" button at the dialogue box.
In the Network window that opens, do you see your TM drive?
Double click it to mount the drive.
Now let's try to reselect it for Time Machine use.
Go to System Preferences --> Time Machine.
    Click the "Change Disk..." button.
Select "None" and click "Stop Backing Up".
Now click "Choose Backup Disk" and reselect your drive again.
Close System Preferences and try backing-up again.
On the other hand, does your Time Machine drive NOT appear at all? Is it appearing on your desktop? If it is still connected try disconnecting the cable, waiting a few seconds and then reconnecting the cable. Does the drive mount on the desktop? Try initiating a backup now.
*Disk Fails to Wake From Sleep*
“If your external HD has a sleep function that does not wake for Time Machine backups.  Time Machine will alert you that "The backup volume could not be found", and backups will not be made.” [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1337]
    *3rd-Party Disk Utilities* #
Many external hard disks come with software for maintaining/monitoring hard disk activities. It may have come on a separate CD or been installed on the drive itself. If these programs have been installed they may interfere with Time Machine backups, generate erratic behavior, or cause the drive to ‘disappear’ altogether.
You may never know these applications are there as they may be running in the background. Go to System preferences --> Accounts. Select your account in the pane on the left. Click “Login Items”. Are there any items listed there that might refer to hard disk utilities. If so remove them using the “-” button at the bottom.
    *Delete Time Machine Preference .plist*
It may be that the preference list that stores the name of your designated backup disk has become corrupted.
Go to --> Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences (Note: NOT Home / Library / Preferences).
    Drag the .plist file labeled,
    com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
to the root level of your Macs’ hard drive.
    Reboot your computer.
This .plist file is automatically recreated at startup if it is missing.
Now try choosing the external HD in the TM Prefs for backup.
*Time Capsule Has a Long Name*
“When using your Time Capsule for Time Machine backups in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later, the Time Capsule backup volume may not mount and Time Machine may not be able to back up to it. This alert may appear: "Backup volume cannot be found". This can happen if the Time Capsule disk has a long name. [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1170]
    Open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities).
    Click your Time Capsule's icon.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Enter the password for the Time Capsule if prompted.
    Click the Disks icon.
Highlight the volume name that appears under "Time Capsule Disk".
In the Name field, enter a name for the volume that is less than 27 characters long.
    Click Update.
After Time Capsule restarts, on the Mac(s)using Time Machine, open Time Machine preferences and reselect the Time Capsule volume.”
Let us know if any of these suggestions help.
    Cheers!

  • Backup volume could not be found

Time Machine is unable to back up my system because it continues to experience the following error: Delayed. The Backup volume could not be found. Each time I plug in the TM drive, the icon spins like a backup is starting then the error takes place. So it knows the drive is present but then it rejects it.
Could this have anything to do with the recent repair service I received? From what I can tell, the machine was pretty much gutted: Logic board/mother board/video card, etc.
Thoughts to get me running again?
    Thanks in advance,

yes. after a logic board change you either need to start a new backup series (reselect the TM drive in TM system preferences) or re-pair the TM drive with the new logic board. Follow this [macosx hint|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101&query=repai r%2BTime%2Bmachine].

  • Volume could not be found?

Hi - got a replacement for my iMac today and brilliantly everything was back on the new machine in 15 minutes. Downloaded software upgrades available and repaired permissions. Thought I should then do a backup with Time Machine. I now get "Time Machine Error - The backup volume could not be found. Why can't it be found and what can I do?
Please help!! - I have had so many problems with my other 'new' iMac - surely the replacement can't be playing up as well.
    Thanks
    Ann

Hi - sorry if I sound stressed but I am:-( The History: I had backed up everything from my other faulty iMac - (that has now been replaced because of so many hardware problems) - with Time Machine. Everything worked really well, as soon as I switched on the new machine it asked if I wanted to install from Time Machine - I clicked that button and I was away - brilliant - all my files, preferences everything onto the new iMac, I was so pleased. When I tried to open itunes however it told me that it had been created with a newer version, so, I went to software update and downloaded all the recommended files apart from 10.5.7 There was an EFI firmware update which took a while. I then repaired file permissions and thought I should back it all up.
Tried Time Machine and got the message "The backup volume could not be found" . Thought this might be because I hadn't downloaded 10.5.7 as that was what I had installed when I had completed my last backup on the faulty machine. So downloaded 5.7 from the Apple site and again tried to do a backup. Got the same message. I then went to Disk Utilities and clicked on the external drive and repaired disk. It told me the volume was OK. Tried to back up again and same message - can't find the the backup volume.
I have a 500GB Western Digital external drive and only 49.5 GB has been used by Time Machine so plenty of space on it. Everything else on the new iMac is fine and seems to be working.
I just can't believe I have encountered yet another problem on a machine that has only been out of the box for a few hours.
Would it be best if I just erased everything on the external drive and set up Time Machine from scratch again? Would that work?
    Thanks
    Ann

  • Everything was OK - now have "The backup volume could not be found" error

    Setup:
    * MacBook Air
    * MacBook 10.5.5
    * Mac Mini with external hard drive with 2 partitions, one of which is called "Time Machine", 10.5.5
    What was working:
MacBook Air and MacBook would backup with Time Machine over wireless connection to .sparseimage files on the "Time Machine" volume connected to the Mac Mini.
    Change:
Had to give the MacBook Air back to my old employer, so I "merged" the MacBook Air onto the MacBook (the merge was somewhat convoluted, and unrelated to my issue I think: I used SuperDuper to copy the MacBook Air hard drive onto a new SATA notebook drive. Then I installed that drive in the MacBook. Then I used Migration Assistant to copy the user from the original MacBook SATA drive onto the new drive in the MacBook. Now I have two users on the MacBook, whereas before I had one use on each of two computers).
    Symptom:
Now I cannot use Time Machine to backup the MacBook to the "Time Machine" volume. Everything I've tried causes Time Machine to briefly "prepare" the backup, then return the error "The backup volume could not be found". Things I've tried:
    * Mounting the volume "Time Machine" on the MacBook, under either user, works fine - I can write, read, and delete from the volume.
    * Deleting the old .sparseimage backup files from the "Time Machine" volume.
    * Erasing the "Time Machine" volume with Disk Utility on the Mac Mini.
    * Using "Change Disk..." in Time Machine to re-select the volume "Time Machine"
    * Using "Change Disk..." in Time Machine to select None, then restarting, then re-selecting the volume "Time Machine"
    * Making the volume "Time Machine" read/write by guests, then connecting to it from the MacBook as a guest instead of as an admin user.
    * Repairing permissions and/or repairing disks using Disk Utility on all applicable volumes.
    * Tried all of the above under both users on the MacBook (both of whom are Admin users)
None of these things have worked, they all exhibit the same symptom when I manually start a time machine, or when I wait for Time Machine to automatically start the backup.
Any ideas of what I can try next?

Consider these reasons for this error...

  • Time Machine: The backup volume could not be found?

I keep getting the message "The backup volume could not be found" when I try to back up my Macbook Pro using an external Lacie USB harddrive. I have tried reformatting the harddrive, and restartet the computer. The external harddrive works normal in Finder, I am able to write and read it, but Time Machine still get this error message. Can anyone help me here?
When I look in the console log, it sais: Volume at path /Volumes/MBP Backup does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
Where can I delete this cookies?

There is a Time Machine preferences file at
    <your startup drive root>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Note: This is be main Library folder, not the one in your user folder.
You might try moving that to the Desktop so that the system creates a new one.

  • Time Machine: Backup Volume Could not be Found

I recently upgraded to Leopard. I have a brand new Lacie external hard drive.
I have tried to use Time Machine with the Lacie HD, but it fails and gives me this message, "Backup volume could not be found."
I did some troubleshooting. I tried to reformat the HD, but that gave me errors as well, stating "Could not unmount disk"
The HD is currently formatted to Mac OS Extended.
I am not certain if this is a problem with the HD, or just user error! I also had problems with iTunes when I tried to move the Library to the HD. I got and error message stating "you don't have sufficient privileges"
I only have 2.5G left on my internal HD, so I am a bit concerned. Any guidance would be much appreciated!!

when you select the TM hard drive in disk utility (the model, not the name) look at the bottom of the DU window. Do you see the line
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table?
Also, I looked at your first post again and it says that you only have 2.5GB of space available on your main drive. I don't know how big your hard drive is but that's a tiny amount. You need to offload part of your data to a different drive ASAP. when free space gets that low, disk fragmentation becomes a very serious issue. system slows done and start behaving in unpredictable fashion. This can lead to all sorts of problems including directory damage. Run "verify disk" on your main drive and see if any errors are reported. I don't know for sure if this is related to your TM problems but it very well might be.

  • Time machine has stopped working - 'the backup volume could not be found'

i'm not sure what happened, but my macbook pro hasn't been able to backup to my time machine for the past few weeks. i get a 'delayed' message, then in time machine prefs it says 'the backup volume could not be found.' i can manually mount the backup image, but it still won't backup. my wife's 12" powerbook is backing up perfectly. we both have 10.5.4. i was having the problem before the 7.3.2 firmware update, so that doesn't seem to be the cause. has this happened to anyone else? could my computer somehow lost track if the backup? is there prefs that can be trashed? i don't mind losing my old backups if i need to start over, but i can't figure out how to force it to backup because i keep getting the 'backup volume can't be found' no matter what i do.
my setup: dsl modem into time machine / my macbook pro, my wife's powermac 12", and our apple tv are the only clients.

There is a Time Machine preferences file at
    <your startup drive root>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Note: This is be main Library folder, not the one in your user folder.
You might try moving that to the Desktop so that the system creates a new one.

  • Time Machine backup fails because "volume could not be found".

I just had my logic board replaced in my Macbook Pro and went to do a backup (yeah, I didn't do this right before it crashed) and now Time Machine backup fails with the message "volume could not be found"  Under Time Machine/Choose Disk, it appears that the drive is the one selected.  The computer "sees" the drive and I can read files on it.  The only other thing that has happened in the meantime is that a friend helped pull a file off the hard drive that I needed for a project.  No apparent issues there.  Any suggestions?

You might try going to /Library/Preferences, then drag the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist to the Desktop.  Reboot your Mac, then try declaring the backup disk for Time Machine.  It might help if you mount the backup disk first.
Are you using Time Machine to write its backups to the disk of a Time Capsule?  If not, since this discussion section is for Apple's Time Capsule AirPort base station, a discussion involving Time Machine should be held on the discussion section for whatever version of OSX that you're using.

  • Time Machine Error: "The backup volume could not be found"

Here's my problem: I click on "Back up now" and it "Prepares to backup" for a few seconds then fails.
I have been here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275#4 and it didn't help at all as I'm using Time Machine, not Time Capsule. I only noticed the problem now, but it has been over a week since it was last backed up. (The computer was getting its logic board replaced)
Has anyone got a clue as to a fix to this situation? I really don't want to reformat my external HD as it has stuff that I'd love to keep on it - not to mention I don't want the hassle.
    Thanks

    Time Machine Failed Backup
After being without a backup for 3 months, I now have my backup program working again. My backup drive is a Western Digital 1TB drive connected by firewire. I'm not a tekkie but this worked painlessly for me and took only about 2 minutes from start to finish.
I had the same problem of being unable to launch a backup (although I could restore files. In retrospect the ownership privileges were pooched; although I could read, I couldn't write.) The 10.5.6 updated didn't provide the solution I had hoped to see and has even caused all kinds of similar problems for other people.
    Cheers and good luck!
    Rob
    I found the thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1827243&tstart=15
and this is the important part:
Using Terminal (found under utilities) type the following and be sure to include spaces where they occur.
    $ cd /Volumes/Backup
    $ ls -alF
    $ sudo chown Username .001b63b6df97
"Backup" is the name of your TM drive
    "Username" is, well, your username
.001b... is the name of the file TM states (also shown after the ls command)
For the ‘cd’ command, replace “Backup” with your volume name, e.g. My Time Machine (hint, you can type the first few characters and press TAB and the shell should auto-complete). For the ’sudo’ command, replace “jfoster” with your account name and use the file name shown in the error dialog (or the file listing given with ‘ls’).* The ’sudo’ command allows you to run the ‘chown’ (change owner) as root, but you will need to give your password to authenticate this action.
(*I also found the file name by clicking on the lowercase "i" in the red circle next to where it said Failed:)

  • TimeMachine refuses to make backups (backup volume could not be found)

Let me start by saying that I'm new to Macs, so if you're going to make suggestions involving strange and arcane steps in Terminal (which I'm completely open to trying), please try to be as clear as possible
When I set up my new iMac, everthing worked beautifully for a few weeks, and then inexplicably, TimeMachine started failing to make backups. I have a 200g external Maxtor HD that I was using as my backup drive. TimeMachine had no problems backing up to it for a few weeks, and then suddenly it stopped. I don't know why.
I have searched these forums for a solution to my problem, and none of the suggestions work. Here's what I've tried:
-- Going into preferences, unselecting the volume, then reselecting it.
-- Turning off TM, unplugging the EHD, restarting the iMac, plugging in the EHD, and following the wizard prompts to enable TM.
-- I have verified the EHD. It reports no errors. I have tried repairing the EHD. No errors reported.
-- I have erased, formatted, partitioned, formatted again. TM still fails.
-- Following the suggestions in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1480141 I have done the following:
    1. Quit all applications, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type in the following commands:
    # sudo mv /Library/Preferences /Library/Preferences.old
    # sudo mv /Library/Caches /Library/Caches.old
    # sudo reboot
    Time Machine still failed.
    2. Deleted: com.apple.TimeMachine.plist, then went through all the steps above again. Time Machine still failed.
I have tried every single solution on this forum I could find, and TimeMachine simply will not work. I would prefer to not have to spend an additional $300 on a TimeCapsule when I already have a wireless router and an EHD that TimeMachine previously had no problem making backups to.
Here's what I find in Console:
    5/29/08 7:06:11 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[160] Starting standard backup
5/29/08 7:06:11 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[160] Volume at path /Volumes/Untitled does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
    5/29/08 7:06:16 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[160] Backup failed with error: 18
Untitled is the name of my drive after all the formatting, partitioning, erasing rigamarole. I'm incredibly frustrated right now, because it USED TO WORK. Now it doesn't. There's no reason for it not to work for what I can tell. What else is there left for me to try?

I believe I have isolated the problem as a permissions issue which I have logged as bug 5990628:
    Summary:
Unable to backup over network after upgrading to 10.5.3.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Configure Time Machine to back up Leopard machine over AirPort to another Leopard machine (with external drive and .Mac account configured in this case)
    Expected Results:
    Backups complete as usual.
    Actual Results:
Backups are 'Delayed' with errors like this in the console:
6/6/08 4:25:57 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2334] Volume at path /Volumes/Time Machine-1 does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
    Regression:
    Yes
    Notes:
There are many threads on the subject:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1538633
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1543033
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1547134
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1546079
The problem appears to relate to being unable to read the cookie:
6/6/08 4:20:23 AM System Preferences[2315] Failed to create remote cookie file at path: /Volumes/Time Machine/.001b63abcdef
And this appears to be because the cookie was owned by a different user (likely due to it wanting to connect using a .Mac username instead of a local one), per my explanation below:
I only ever used Time Machine after upgrading to 10.5.3 so my first experience with it has been fairly ordinary, as the backups were constantly being 'Delayed' with this error in the Console:
6/6/08 4:25:57 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2334] Volume at path /Volumes/Time Machine-1 does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
The first thing I discovered from a blog post was that my .Mac 60 day trial was causing it to connect using my .mac username (which appeared in the username field in the UI as a string of hex characters); disconnecting and reconnecting using a local user seemed to work but the issue remained.
I then spotted this in the console:
6/6/08 4:20:23 AM System Preferences[2315] Failed to create remote cookie file at path: /Volumes/Time Machine/.001b63abcdef
The 'random' characters are your MAC address and the binary inside is likely this 'cookie' - a random value used to transparently and reliably link backups to machines. Curiously I couldn't modify this file over the network despite apparently owning it (in Terminal):
    $ cd /Volumes/Time\ Machine
    $ ls -la .00*
    -r-------- 1 samj staff 16 Jun 6 04:33 .001b63abcdef
But when looking at it on the Mac Mini 'server' I saw that the owner was in fact another user:
    -r-------- 1 otheruser staff 16 Jun 6 04:33 .001b63abcdef
    So I ran these commands:
    sudo chown samj .001b63abcdef
    sudo chgrp staff .001b63abcdef
And sure enough I was able to configure Time Machine as expected and it is as we speak backing up my MacBook over Airport to a USB drive attached to my Mac Mini.
    Cheers,
    Sam

  • Time Machine says "Backup volume could not be found"

Okay, I know what I did; now I need help in untangling an unintended consequence.
I surmise from the error message (and from some info from Time Machine Buddy widget) that the problem is the cookie doesn't match.
"Cookie file is not readable or does not exist at path: /Volumes/BigBackup/.000d9356b794
Volume at path /Volumes/BigBackup does not appear to be the correct backup volume for
this computer. (Cookies do not match)
    Backup failed with error: 18"
I can guess why: I had some significant cosmetic damage to my G5 desktop a week or so back, and I moved all internal parts -- drives, RAM, even the added cards -- over from the "injured" G5 to an identical G5 that I had in reserve. Booted up and ran perfectly, no problems with identification from any outside sources and all software thinks it's still "home" and is running fine.
However, if the cookie left by Time Machine on the backup uses a device identifier for the computer beyond just the basic computer network name (a safe guess!) then I see how I've created a problem -- yes???
So, without destroying all of my previous backups or rendering them unreadable from this machine, HOW can I fool Time Machine, the G5, the cookie, and/or the backup volume into believing they've all been in love forever and ignoring the "oops, it's just a clone" problem? Can I doctor or hack the cookie or otherwise un-mess my mess? Thanks!

Yes. Time Machine knows it's a different Mac, via the address that's embedded in the hardware of the replacement Mac's logic board.

You might be able to use the procedure in #C8 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • AFP users getting disconnected "because the volume could not be found"

We have a Leopard server which is mostly used for its file sharing services (AFP for the office Macs and SMB for the PCs).
The PCs never seem to have a problem with SMB, but the Macs using AFP regularly get kicked off with the message, "Volume "....." can not be used and will be ejected because it is no longer available."
Some days it doesn't happen at all, while other days (like today!) it happens constantly.
    What I've tried so far:
    - Restarting AFP
    - Restricting the number of users that can connect
Not a big list, but I can't think of anything else to try.
By the way, the problem happens both inside the LAN and when connecting via the Internet.
Any ideas for where to start troubleshooting?

    Thanks for the reply, Leif.
Strange characters in the share name: No, just regular roman characters
Share folders/whole volume: Yes, certain folders only on the volume
Shared volume on external FW drive: Yes (or USB 2.0 - I will have to check when I'm back at the office tomorrow), but definitely not set to sleep.
Hope this gives some possible clues.
    Thanks again --
