A year ago I had a new hard drive put in my Macbook pro.  I cannot log onto the computer to change settings as I do not know the password.  The tech said he left it blank, but I have not idea what it is now.  Can this be fixed.  I have been they only owne

I had the replacement hard drive installed and the tech said he left the password open.  My old password does not work.  I can use the computer, but I cannot log in to add new wireless devices or to download programs.  I recently tried to download Adobe Flash player, and I needed to log in but could not. I can downloan security updated from Apple and the machine will shut down and restart, without me needing to enter a password.  I bought this computer from Apple directly in 2007.  Is this a case where I need to send it to them since they can verify that I own it, or can I get help with this online or from a local computer tech?

If you use Lion, boot into your recovery pressing Command and R buttons, press "Utilities" menu, open Terminal and write:
resetpassword
If you have Snow Leopard, boot into your install DVD pressing C button, click "Utilities" and press Password Reset

  • I just had a new hard drive put in at the AppleStore.  When I looked at the icon, I noticed that it was named snow08.  Is that normal - or do I have someone else's hard drive?

I just had a new hard drive installed at the Apple Store.  When I looked at it, the hard drive was named snow08
Is that odd?  Do I have someone else's hard drive?

I think apple named your drive snow08. I really don't think they would replace your drive without the new one completly erased, that would be pretty sloppy of them. I guess they could have, i just do not think they would have!

  • New hard drive replacement on my MacBook Pro.

I bought a new hard drive for my laptop but I do not have the disc to reboot the new hard drive, can someone help me?

Do you know the exact model you have?
You can try booting while holding down Command Option R keys. If you have a more recent machine it'll boot to Internet Recovery.

  • What are the steps to follow after you install a new Hard Drive on a 17in Macbook Pro mid 2009

I plan on installing a larger Hard Drive..the physical part is simple..but what are the steps after you close it up and hit the power button? Is there softwre on the mother board that will start the unit running??

A new Hard drive will not be Mac-formatted, so you will have to do that first. A copy of Disk Utility to do the job is also on the 10.6 Installer/Utilities DVD.
Boot to the installer DVD, but do not Install. Answer only the "what language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the menuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu that appears.
Select the Hardware_name of the new Drive. Partition, one partition, ( Options ), GUID partition table. Name the partition: MacIntosh HD and choose Format: Mac OS X Extended (journaled). It will complete in a minute or two, as it only rewrite the Directory area.
If you wish to shake out your drive, you can erase it and Security Erase, Zero all data, one pass. But this takes HOURS.

  • New Hard drive installation difficulties in MacBook pro 15"

I have a MacBook Pro 15" mid 2010. I was having difficulties with it getting slow, and the hard drive reaching out of capacity.
    I did get the following:
    - 2* 204pin, DDR3 1066MHz of 4GB each
    - HGST travelStar hard drive 1TB 5400RPM, 8MB cache, SATAIII
I did install both of these without incident. When I try to boot the computer holding the "Option/alt" key, i do get the blank screen asking to choose network and booting disk. However, I only see the DVD drive. When I choose the DVD drive in any case, the computer just gets frozen and I have to reboot again!
Should I try to put back the old hard drive and see if it is a problem with the RAM or new HD? Is there anything else I should be doing?
    Thanks!

    Addendum to my question:
I did put back the old drive. The RAM memory seems to be working fine. I did put the new hard drive in a case and I was able to access it and format it!
However, when I put the new HD back in, it does not appear on the main screen after I press "option/alt"! And, once again, the computer freezes when I choose the DVD for booting! Why is it freezing? What should I do differently?
    Thanks!

  • My Macbook Pro has just had a new hard drive put in it but i still need to install snow leopard without a disk?

My Macbook pro has just had a new 500gb hard drive in it and osx snow leopard had not been put on it because i never got a disk when i bought it. It still comes up with the grey screen with the flashing folder which i think would be normal because there is nothing on the hard drive. How do i install OSX Snow Leopard back on it the cheapest way possible?
    Thanks

You might be in a bind. While is is normal for new Macs that shipped with Lion to omit a system installation DVD, yours was running Snow Leopard. Apple included a system installation CD or DVD for every computer that shipped with every computer through Snow Leopard. Lion was installed on every machine built starting about August 2011, ending the DVD era.
Apparently your computer had been sitting in someone's inventory for a while, but that's no excuse for them to have removed the DVD from its box.
Try booting Lion Internet Recovery. Read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
I suspect Lion Recovery may not work since "your computer's eligibility for Lion will be verified with Apple" and you appear not to have purchased it.
Please let me know what happens when you attempt to boot Lion Recovery.

  • Trying to instal a new hard drive in my old macbook pro laptop but it wont recognize the disk to install osx

I want to give my old macbook pro away as a gift & bought a 250 GB SATA internal hard drive and installed it, then popped in the osx install disk.  When I start it up it begins well, but when it gets to the point to install the software on the drive, the drive simply doesnt show up on the menu to be chosen to instal the software.
The cables are on right and should be working well, so I don't understand why this brand new, never used hard drive doesn't allow the software to mount.  Thanks for the help!

It's a toshiba 250 gb.  The place I bought it from said it was, but as I type this, I'm startting to think it's not.  Could I simply take it out of the laptop, put it into an enclosure and format it using another mac?
Would that work or is there a better/ different way?  Thanks again.
How about an exact model number, there are a lot of 250G Toshiba drives, but even if it is formatted for Windows it should not be necessary to remove it just to format it.
Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility)

  • Having problems cloning a new hard drive to install in Macbook Pro 2012

I have a 2009 MBP and I just bought a Crucial 256GB SSD drive. I have cloned it a couple of ways (SuperDuper & CCC) and also tried installing my MBP hybrid drive into the new 2012 MBP. Nothing I have tried has worked. What happens is when I boot I hear a loud beep and then in about 15-20 seconds I get the circle with a cross through it. The original drive in the 2012 MBP works fine but obviously I want all my data from my 2009 MBP + my shiny new SSD drive.
    Any ideas?!?

    Do this:
Install the drive back to your Macbook 2012.  Put your Crucial SSD in a USB enclosure.
Go to your utilities folder and open Migration Assitant and copy the files or apps over using that.
Once you've done that and you can see your files and apps on the 2012 Macbook.
You can now proceed in formatting or erasing your SSD using Disk Utility. Format it MAC OS Extended Journaled.
Open Carbon Copy and start cloning.  Source Drive your macbook hard drive.  Destination: your SSD.
Now hit clone - you will get a pop up sayingt that a recovery partition is was not created.  Create one using Carbon Copy.  Once that's done, proceed with the clone.
Once the clone is done, then install your SSD in your 2012 Macbook and everything should now boot up fine.
If you find your boot time is taking too long after you've installed your SSD, go to system preferences - startup disk and select your SSD as the startup, restart and you should be up to speed now.
Good luck and don't do any short cuts - follow these steps so you won't have any issues.

  • Win7 install does not see new hard drive (640gb Samusung) on MacBook Pro

Replaced MBP 5,4 (mid 2009) hdd with a Samsung HM641JI 640gb drive. OS X installation went fine using SL install disk, updated software to 10.6.4. Problem is with Windows 7 installation using Boot Camp. Partition is created (tried 32 to 300 gb). Windows 7 install disk loads but after "Install now" and accepting license agreement, it does not recognize the drive or any partitions. XP install works fine. Had same Win7 problem with 2 identical hdds and 3 different install disks which were full version, not upgrades. Installed Win7 using boot camp on 320 gb Samsung drive (also 3.0gb/s SATA) without a problem. Tried formatting the bootcamp partition on the 640 gb drive to NTFS, but still not recognized. Any suggestions?

Odd you can't see anything. I'd use Windows 7 recovery tools to do a full initialize and map out bad blocks if necessary. Or initialize from OS X drive and then do full slow format etc from Windows DVD.
Every drive vendor has their own linux/dos/windows utility to recertify and test sectors and does a better job than anyone else's. WD Lifeguard for all my WD drives, can be very handy.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • My hard drive crashed on my macbook pro and I had a new one installed and they were unable to get my pictures off of it. Is there anyone who could help? I'm going to lose all my memories of my kids! I got my old hard drive

My hard drive crashed on my macbook pro so i had a new one installed and they couldn't get my pictures off. I dont want to lose all my memories! They gave me back my old hard drive. Is there anyone that could help me?

I think how you understand the value of having backups. All you can do is:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
You will need an external enclosure for the old drive so you can connect it to the computer in order to try the recovery software before you buy it. But if they don't work then you will need to send the drive to a recovery service such as Drive Savers.

  • I've had a new hard drive installed and reloaded all my stuff via time capsule and now can't connect to the internet although it say Airport is connected. How can I fix this problem ?

Just had a new hard drive for my iMac and reloaded all my stuff via time capsule, all works fine apart from Safari which won't connect to internet. Airport is connected but each time Safari comes back saying there is no connection....any help gratefully recieved.

So you have the apple rotuer called a time capsule  and you have complete the frist time machine back up? but there is not internet access ?
    If so.
Opem airport utiltiy on your Comptuer :
What is the IP ? > if its 169.254.xx.xx > its a self assigned
Try power cycling the Internet source  for up to 1 mintue and make sure all the lights  turn off.
    In Airport Utility Version 5.5.3 / 5.6.1
Gi > Intenret > conncetiong sharing > Is it off  bridge mode change it to share a public Ip address
    In airport Utility  version 6.0/6.1
Edit > network > rotuer mode : Should be DHCP and NAT unless you use PPPoE to conecnt to the internet then this is automatically invoked.
