ABAP Objects book

Dear All,
I am using the Horst Keller ABAP Objects: An intro to programming SAP applications book and am having a little trouble.
for one, i cannot use the s_abap_book development class, and the book revolves around that...
i know i cannot use the s_first_program or create the s_first_program because i need the "unlock code" or whatever it is, but is there a way to use or copy the development class? because i can create the z_first_program program to follow along...
it would definately help...

Please go to transaction SE80 then ...
1 . Clickk on Edit object push button
2 . Click on Development coordination tab
3. Give the packagename to be copied
4. In the below button click on copy button
5. This will copy to your new class

[b]MiniSap and the ABAP OBJECTS book [/b]

I have purchased the book "ABAP Objects" by Keller and Kruger. I attempted to install Minisap and ran into a lot of problems. I suspect that I need the most recent version of this product that runs on Windows XP. Can anyone direct me to place where I may download Minisap without having to pay for it again! I really have to say that it shouldn't be this difficult to install a product that is used for training and education. So far I've spent more time trying to install than learning ABAP.

Most of the issues with trying to install this are either answered by the html documents on the kernel disc or by the FAQ doc at www.IT-minds.com search on ABAP and look for the resources.
One issue these documents will not solve is, if you have / had a version of SQLserver installed. As the disc only uses the MSinstaller_01 and can only use the default instance of MS SQLserver2000 desktop engine (MSDE2000).

MiniSap MBS "Abap Objects" problem HELP

I just bought ABAP objects book MiniSap MBS released in 2001, and managed to istall with no problems.
My problem is that in the object navigator , i can not see the object selector.
Has anyone been through this problem and how to fix it??
I am talking about SAP MBS 4.6 Not the AS web 6.2.

I'm actually looking for advance ABAP book that not only contains how to create ABAP program but how to create ABAP program.
From the table of content, it seems like the "Enhancing the quality of ABAP development" is clearly describe how to write good ABAP program and still balance in term of giving suggestion for ABAP as procedural language and ABAP Object. The thing is, I don't know whether there is some content in the book that already obsolete. For instance, is there any statement in that book that recommended but now already not recommended anymore? If all the statement is still valid as of now, I think this book is still good to read.
I do already have ABAP objects book from Horst Keller, but I will not enforce ABAP developers in my current organization to be written in full OOP. At least not in 1-2 years. If the procedural ABAP still working properly and high performing, I don't see any reason why I should force my team to switch totally to pure ABAP object that definitely will take more time to learn and develop, but anyway, that's different subject from this thread.

Object casting: confusion in ABAP Objects: Complete Reference book

Hi,
During Object Assignments using casting, is a Type Test carried out during the syntax check or at runtime?
A.5.2.2 (page 1008) of 'ABAP Objects: The Complete Reference' says about Widening Cast: "...you must check at runtime...". However on the next page under A.5.3.2 it says of Widening Cast in Data References: "The syntax check precludes...".
A.5.4 (page 1010) concerns Assignments between Object Reference Variables, but makes no mention of whether checks are carried out by a syntax check or at runtime.
Also nowhere does it mention when Type Tests for Narrow casting takes place. Can anyone clear my confusion please? Unfortunatly I don't know enough about this stuff to test by writing some code.

Your questions can be answered by the following rule for object references, which I found in the book "ABAP Objects" by Horst Keller and Sascha Krüger:
"... that the static type of the target variable must be equal to or more general than the dynamic type of the source variable."
Here "static type" means the type with which an object reference variable is declared. "Dynamic type" is the type that the object reference variable has at runtime. The dynamic type of an object reference is always more special than its static type, otherwise a runtime error occurs.
With this rule all your questions can be answered:
1. The Narrowing Cast is always checked during the syntax check. Example:
DATA o_ref1 TYPE REF TO object.
DATA o_ref2 TYPE REF TO class_1.
o_ref1 = o_ref2.
Here the reference o_ref2 has a dynamic type "class_1" or a subclass of it, which is narrower than its static type "class_1", which is narrower than the static type "object" of the reference o_ref1. Therefore, the syntax check says that the assignment is OK.
2. The Widening Cast is always checked at runtime and requires an assignment using the operator ?=. If you use the operator = in the assignment, a syntax error occurs. Therefore the following example produces a syntax error (try it yourself):
DATA o_ref1 TYPE REF TO object.
DATA o_ref2 TYPE REF TO class_1.
o_ref2 = o_ref1.
The correction for this syntax error is:
DATA o_ref1 TYPE REF TO object.
DATA o_ref2 TYPE REF TO class_1.
o_ref2 ?= o_ref1.
Now the syntax check is satified, and the correctness of the widening cast is checked at runtime.

Difference between abap object and function

hi all,
i read the book on abap object of the difference between abap object and classical abap.
i know that there is only 1 instance of a specific function group but somehow i still not so clear why subsequent vehicle cannot use the same function. i also can use the do and loop to call the function? if cannot then why?

Try to repeat this using a function group and I think you'll undestand because it'll be very hard to do it.
By only one function group how can u read the data of a certain vehicle?
Yes you can create in the function group an internal table where u store the data of every car: in this way u use the internal table like it was an instance, but you should consider here the example is very simple. Here we have only the speed as characteristic, but really we can have many complex characteristics.

Abap objects and selection screen

Hello everybody,
I am interested in your ways of implementing selection-screens in the style of ABAP Objects.
In earlier times (when I used to implement ABAP objects in a procedural way) I just put the selection-screen commands in an include or a form routine of my ABAP report. So it was possible to run the report in background.
Now I read something about selection-screens/dynpros and "separation of concerns" in the book "ABAP Objects" written by Keller. He advises using function groups to encapsulate presentation from logical matters. (Selection-screen commands are in an automatically generated include now). I implemented this way. (ABAP report with a local class, which has a main method, where function module of the function group is called). It works, but i see no chance to run my report in background now.. but I need to run the report in background.
Does anybody know a solution without deleting function group?
What do you think is the best way of using selection-screen-commands and ABAP Objects, especially regarding running in background?

thx for explanation. I am not sure, if I understood everything in the right way.
Where do you write the code for building the selection-screen? (PARAMETERS, SELECT-OPTIONS etc.)
If you write these commands in a class method, you will get a syntax error ( because it's forbidden per definition of ABAP objects). So, am I right assuming that you put the coding just at the beginning of the ABAP report ? And after START-OF-SELECTION-event you start the processing... ?
Furthermore, I don't really understand why you create an separate class for ALV. I found your "SAP abap help"-blog, where you explained the concept of MVC ((By the way, well done!), but you didn't mention an "ALV class" there..
Mh.. another question - have you ever combined MVC with object services?
At the moment I'm working on a software project where I use object services. I created 2 persistent classes via SE24 and one local class in my ABAP Report.
I don't really see possibility to implement MVC in this project without change very much of coding and class structure...
In my opinion the M (data&business logic) are my existing global classes and my local class is kind of Controller class?!

Hi Krish and Sudhansu,
Design patterns are solutions which are already verified and known by many developers. That is why it is worth to use them. There is no need to reinvent the wheel in many cases.
I would recommend book which is placed in the ABAP world:

Although Java language has intuitive syntax, there are some special things in ABAP development so it is better to check solutions adjusted for ABAP editor.
The most common usage of factory pattern is to simplify object creation.
- By one method call you provide required parameters and do all initializations, including dependent objects.
- Class can have many factory methods, if you want to provide more ways of initialization.
- Factory method is usually static in the class and they return initialized instance of object for this class.
- There is naming convention to start factory method name with "create" - easy to recognize pattern.
- If you set property of class to "private instantiation" then you force to use factory method for object creation. In this way it is really simple to find all places where object are created with given set of input parameters - find references of factory method.
Factory pattern becomes even more powerful if we add inheritance. Factory method returns basic object (like ZCL_VEHICLE) but its implementation can return different subclass instance, depending on input parameter (ZCL_CAR, ZCL_TRAIN etc). Each instance can implement differently behavior (methods implementation), but these are object oriented techniques.
