Ability to do a custom install

(Well they had a check mark for "question" but not one for "rant" so I'm calling this a "question"; apologies in advance.)
My issue: Installing (or upgrading) iTunes always results in 3 separate entries being placed in the main "All Programs" group on the Windows Start menu. The entries: iTunes (shortcut), QuickTime (folder), and *Apple Software Update* (shortcut). I would really like to see a single entry added instead: Apple (folder) and have the above mentioned items placed inside.
(Many other software vendors do this; I don't see why iTunes is special in this regard).
As anybody who has a lot of programs installed on their computer has experienced, placing lots of items in the main program group can result in the main program group expanding out from 1 column to 2 or even 3 columns (when you click Start --> All Programs). This can make navigation difficult and (when there are multiple columns) the list seems to come up slower (in my experience, anyway).
As a matter of housekeeping, I reorganize my iTunes files into the above Apple folder after installing/upgrading iTunes but find that I have to do it again after doing an upgrade).
I am looking for a way to override the default upgrade/install and do a custom one that organizes the items in the way that works best for me. Anybody know if this is possible? I was thinking with command line switches (on running the install) or using a custom response file as you can do with certain install software.

From the Lightroom Getting Started PDF page 24:
1 Choose File > Auto Import >
Enable Auto Import.
2 Choose File > Auto Import >
Auto Import Settings.
3 Choose a folder to watch using the Choose button. Note: You cannot choose an existing folder containing photos as a watched folder.
4 Choose a destination folder. It is a good policy to create a sub folder for each shoot so that the incoming images are grouped together.
5 Rename your images as they are copied to your Library. See page 11.
6 Select your Develop and Metadata presets from the pull-down menu. See page 12.
7 Apply any keywords you wish
to incorporate as you import.
See page 13.
8 Select Render Standard-Sized Previews to have Lightroom render previews of the imported photos rather than only using the embedded previews in the photo files. Your thumbnails and loupe previews will now reflect the chosen develop preset settings instead of the camera generated settings.
9 Next follow your camera manufacturers instructions for setting up tethered shooting.
10 Choose the same folder you picked for Lightroom to watch.
11 Test fire a shot and notice it quickly load into your Library. To see only the images from the watched folder, use the Folders panel to select the destination folder you picked for your watched images.
Now you can work in Lightroom while shooting tethered. Your camera manufacturer software is just loading the images from the camera and into your watched folder. All image adjustments can be made using Lightrooms intuitive interface.

  • IPhoto does not show up on custome install on ILife08 disc

    I have upgraded to Leopard and my iphoto book themes are gone. I have tried to reinstall iLife08 for the iphoto but when i try to custome install the only option it gives me is garage band. I cannot reinstall iPhoto or any other applications beside garage band. How do i get my iPhoto book themes back?

    I tried this and it still did not work. What did work was to "Nuke" n "pave" (Reinstall Leopard and iLife 08 with the Erase and install). Thank god for the Time Machine.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Lion, can't do a custom install or partition?

    I just did a clean install of Lion on a friends new iMac. I wanted to do a custom install. I could never get the custom ikon to work. Ended up doing a full install. Also I could not partition the HD after I did a erase. Last, I was wondering if you could erase the HD and dump the Lion partition?
    Any thoughts out there?
    thanks

  • Custom Install Never Works For Me FCS 1

    I installed Leopard the other day and now I just want to reinstall Motion 2 and nothing else. I put in my FCS 1 installer disc and I did the custom install option where I deselected everything but the Motion application (no content). I clicked continue and the installer is installing everything. Why?
    This happened to me before when I wanted to go back from FCS 2 to FCS 1.
    Anyone else have this happen to them?
    Thanks

    Well, it is a whopping 2 years old. I guess I shouldn't expect so much from Apple, huh?
    Motion 3 isn't usable for me. It is slooooow with basic 2D projects that are in "real time" in Motion 2. It renders 4X slower than Motion 2.
    I finished the whole install. It seems Motion 2.0.1 doesn't work in Leopard. I have another drive with Tiger on it. I'll have to boot into that, install Adobe software onto that hard drive (what ever happened to "Packages"?) since it's all installed on the Leopard drive. Another day wasted.
    I'm really getting tired of feeling like I'm on a Windows machine with all these hassles on my Mac. Is Apple completely blowing off their pro customers? It seems they are losing their focus and have been putting out a lot of faulty "pro" software lately.
    Sorry for the rant. Thanks for your input.

  • Custom Install on "My Computer" - Disabled?!?

    Okay so this is not one of my best mornings. I managed to delete my iTunes library (I thought it was a duplicate) and now when I try to load iTunes it won't work.
    No biggie I head over to Apple and download a new copy. I get as far as the Custom Install page and it won't let me click on the three things as it says next to them 'disabled'. I have about 30 GB available so I don't think its a memory issue.
    Does anyone know what I might have done?

    Remove the 'iTunesX.pkg' file from ./Library/Receipts.
    Try installing again. This time it should work.
    Did you delete the entire iTunes folder?
    Deleting the library should not prevent iTunes from operating.
    iTunes will create a new empty library, but operate as normal.

  • Archive disabled via custom install

    Hi,
    I setup my custome install to disable archiving of Outlook 2010 email.  Now my management would like to start using it and I'm at a loss as to how to re-enable it.  What would be the best way and/or the quickest way to re-enable manual archiving
    in this scenario?  We are in a Windows 2008 R2 domain, if that helps.
    Thanks in advance,
    Linn

    You can do this by creating a revised customisation MSPfile and deploying that:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179141(v=office.14).aspx
    or
    Domain GPO might be the simplest way.
    Have you used the GPO Admin Templates for Office ?
    example:

  • Custom install of Design Premium

    I have CS4 Design Premium installed and it runs perfectly. However I only have need for one or two of the programs and
    it was suggested on another Adobe forum that it may be possible to custom install Design. I did not notice that option on the original install
    so can I get a confirmation that this is a go or a no go. Many thanks

    The is a forum about design, not the Design Suite. Yes you can do a custom install pick what you want to install. If installed you can choose to remove certain applications. If you need more help ask in the Creative Suites forums.

  • How to deploy a custom install of Firefox 12 using SCCM or MDT for Enterprise Clients

    I'm trying to perform a custom install of Firefox 12 for our enterprise desktops and laptops to be deployed from Microsoft Deployment Tools (MDT) or Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).
    I've tried creating a custom app with the regular '''''Firefox Setup 12.0.exe" -ms''''' command, but when the users start the program it asks if they want this to be the default browser, whether they want to import favorites or shortcuts from other browsers, etc...
    I followed the instructions on several websites to create a custom mozilla.cfg file, local-settings.js, override.ini, and a batch file to call everything, but all have failed.
    I have a large business enterprise and would prefer to deploy the latest version of Firefox, but you guys sure don't make it easy.

    I am having this problem also. The first time I start Firefox, I get the error "Failed to read the configuration file".
    I created the following files:
    Mozilla.cfg
    Pref("browser.startup.homepage","http://xxxxxf");
    lockPref("browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser", false);
    lockPref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "ignore");
    lockPref("browser.rights.3.shown", false);
    lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.prompted", 2);
    lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.rejected", true);
    override.ini
    [XRE]
    EnableProfileMigrator=false
    local-settings.js
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0);
    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    My batch file looks like this:
    "%~dp0firefox_setup_12.0.exe" -ms
    REM Install 32-bit customisations
    if exist "%programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\" copy /Y "%~dp0override.ini" "%programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\"
    if exist "%programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\" copy /Y "%~dp0mozilla.cfg" "%programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\"
    if exist "%programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\" copy /Y "%~dp0local-settings.js" "%programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref\"
    The files were copied to the correct folders and I noticed that I got the settings from local-settings.js in my profile.
    Not sure where I have gone wrong.
    Thanks.

  • Why are the NI-DAQmx Base for LabVIEW options grayed out using custom install (with Action:Skip)?

    I'm trying to install NI-DAQmx Base 3.7.0 for LabVIEW 2013 (LV is installed). When I try Standard Install, it doesn't install for LabVIEW (only the Common and C and USB tools), but gives a successful installation message.
    When I try Custom Install, all of the "...for LabVIEW 20XX" options are unchecked, grayed out and the Action says "Skip".
    I'm trying this on a 2011 MacBook Air 11" running OS 10.9. LabVIEW runs fine.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    OS 10.9 is not officially supported by NI with the DAQmx Base 3.7. This information is from the description of the driver (http://www.ni.com/download/ni-daqmx-base-3.7/4272/en/):
    OS Support—NI-DAQmx Base now supports the following versions of Mac OS X:
    Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)
    Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)
    So this seems to the be the problem. Either you choose another OS version or wait for a new driver which supports 10.9
    Regards,
    Michael

  • How to make a custom instalation of OS 10.4

    I have a MAC mini for which I want to make a custom instalation of MAC OS 10.4 and I was wondering if this was possible. My goal is to remove all the non ecentials from the OS and have the OS boot up directly to "Safari" and locking it there so no one has access to operating system. I use to be very proficient with MACs, but the was a long time back. I'm practicaly a novice now so I need a little help with this task. I would apreciate any help at all.
    Thanks

    I'm not familiar with "Launch" but another option is creating an additional user account or accounts without admin privileges (while disabling automatic login for the computer's admin account) and make use of Parental Controls included with Tiger for the additional user or user accounts.
    With Parental Controls, you can select or grant access to Safari only for the limited user account or accounts under "This user can only use these applications:"
    The user account will access to Safari only.

  • Install error 1722 and Custom Install fails too

    I'm installing Java 1.5 (the 16MB offline) and/or the 235K online, problem is the same either way. I am installing on NT4.0 server sp6a.
    When I choose Custom install, and go to the next screen. The Change
    button is disabled. So I cannot change the install directory.
    It seems like an InstallShield version problem. Like there's some new
    dlls or exes of InstallShield that I need.
    Otherwise, it's just Error 1722 again.
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Thanks, John

  • IDVD on Lion OS X - Custom Install iLife '09

    Since iDVD is no longer offered by Apple as part of the "iLife package" that comes with new Macs running Lion OS X (10.7.x) I was searching for info about custom installing iDVD from an iLife '09 package .  I stumbled across a few threads (including this one) but none that I found clearly outlined how to do it so I thought I'd add this post for folks that follow
    The iLife '09 package contains iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb and Garageband.  If you want iDVD you'll need to buy a copy of iLife '09 or a Mac Box Set which includes OS X 10.6, iWork '09 and iLife '09 to get it.
    I wanted to install iDVD '09 while avoiding conflicts with iMovie '11, iPhoto '11 and Garageband '11 (and I didn't have use for iWeb '09 since it's no longer supported).
    To custom install iDVD '09 from an iLife '09 package disc...
    - Be sure that iPhoto '11, iMovie '11 and Garageband '11 are already installed (available from the Mac App Store if needed).
    - Insert the iLife '09 disc, click "Continue" and for each item in the left-hand menu including "Introduction", "Read Me", "License" and Destination".
    - Let it run the initial application search to determine which applications to install.  (This will allow it to find the newer installations of iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband.)
    - Click "Continue" until you reach the "Installation Type".
    - Click on the "Customize" button.
    - On the next screen select iDVD.  (iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband were appropriately greyed out since they were already installed.)
    - After you've selected iDVD click "Continue" and let it finish.
    iDVD installed on my late 2008 iMac and my late 2010 Macbook Air, both running Lion OS X 10.7.3 and works as expected.
    Hope this helps anyone that follows!

    Shootist007 wrote:
    From what I've read on these forums if you buy iLife 11 as a DVD, Not Download, you get iDVD ?11?.
    That's what I thought as well...and it may be possible, but I couldn't track anything definitive down.
    An iLife '11 disc isn't available from Apple that I know of.  Amazon offers an "Old Version" of iLife '11 but there's no mention of iDVD.
    Apple doesn't mention iDVD on the main iLife page either.  However they do mention it on the iLife '11 iDVD page.  ???  When you click on "iLife '11" it takes you to the Mac App Store where iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband are individually sold...but no iDVD.  So I may be missing something.
    My late 2010 Macbook Air came with iLife '11, but not with iDVD.  I've also read on forums that if you do a fresh install of OS X 10.7.x on a Mac that came with iLife '11 that you can contact Apple and somehow get iDVD.  I've also read other posts that say that you can't.  Very confusing.  Perhaps someone will come along with a clear answer.
    In any case, I wanted iDVD on my late 2008 iMac (which of course didn't come with Lion), so installing it from my iLife '09 disc did the trick.

  • Custom install of Oracle XE

    I wish to install Oracle XE with Oracle Network Utilities, Oracle Database Utilities, SQL*Plus, Oracle Windows Interfaces. To do this apparently I must use custom install of XE. I do not see this option available during installation. What am I missing? Thank you

    What do you mean by "Oracle Network Utilities, Oracle Database Utilities, SQL*Plus, Oracle Windows Interfaces"?
    There are a lot of utilities and tools included with Express Edition. A reasonably comprehensive list of features and utilities is in the Licensing document at http://www.oracle.com/pls/xe102/homepage
    However, if you are referring to the utilities such as 'Oracle Network Manager", 'Oracle Enterprise Manager" and so on, then you must look at the 'for fee' editions.

  • Pavilion with vista can i custom install windows 7 or 8?

    seems we over paid for a blue screen. It had vista, now nothing. Wondering if we can
    custom install Windows 7 or 8? Thanks

    Whoa I am understanding very little here. What did you overpay for? Blue screen? Now nothing? What model is it? As a general rule if it runs Vista it will run 7 and likely even 8. But of course you will have to buy Windows 7 or 8 to make it legal. If you want detailed help we really need to know your specific model number and if you are having problems I hate to tell you to try to install software on defective hardware.
