About Tethering

Hi guys, my question is this, when I turn on the Internet Tethering in my iPhone nothing happens, not when I go to the network preferences, and try to configure the iPhone, there is no option that pops up with iPhone networking. And trying to use the blutooth neither, nothing shows up for the USB cable nor for the Bluetooth.

I read your comment, it is nothing to do whether you boot in 32 bits or 64 bits!   It is a bug in iTunes , Apple yet have to sort out.
When I upgrade Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ... my iPhone 4 doesn't recognize my device in iTunes.
Then I try to pull apart the iTunes software, here is what I found.
Go to system/ library/ extensions
Locate : AppleMobileDevice.kext ,   drag it to the bin & delete it.
Then drag the iTunes apps to the bin, and delete it
Restart your computer, and reinstall a new copy of iTunes 4.2.1
After that my iPhone 4 tethering with my Mac Pro :-)
Now I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.1  the problem reoccur ... this time my iPhone 4 sync but can't tethering with my Mac Pro !!
Good job I got a Mac Pro, I kept one hard drive loaded with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 before I upgrade to Lion.
Now I slot my 10.6.8 hard drive back to my MacPro and wait for Apple developer to sort the tethering issues out in Lion!

  • Tethering, yet an other question about tethering

    Hi,
I used to have a jail broken iPhone and now I'm back to an "operator unlock" iPhone which is enough for me except that I can not use Internet Tethering while my mobile carrier (which is not AT&T, obvious I'm not living in the US) enables me to do so.
The option is not present event after I uploaded an modified IPCC to my phone running 3.1.3
Is there something I'm missing ?
A friend of mine bought his iPhone 3GS in South Africa (same configuration as mine) and is able to use Internet Tethering properly.
I know that iPhone OS 4 should solve this point, but would appreciate using it during the week end...
    Thanks for your help.

    Yes and no.
Actually I noticed that the IPCC file is different for 3.1.3 and yes if you are on an Apple partner carrier the file is going to be overwritten.
I found out a way to to it properly few hours from now and consider the point closed. The remaining question (could an Apple representative answer) is : why 2 carrier unlock iPhone bought abroad and used on the same non Apple partner carrier can have 2 different behavior regarding tethering.

  • Question about tethering

I have a weird question and I'm not getting a straight answer from AT&T; hoping that someone here knows. I have an iPad mini and an iPhone 5C. I have a mobile share plan through AT&T. I am wondering is it better, worse, or the same (in terms of how much data it uses) to tether the iPad to the iPhone using the mobile share wifi connection, or the LTE. I realize this is not strictly an apple question, but I'm wondering if anyone has a clue. I'm blowing through data quickly.
    Thanks

Isn't it the same thing?  Mobile share is what they call your data plan.  You access it when you turn on your hot spot and 4G LTE service.
If you are using the mobile data, via cellular with the phone, you are using your mobile data, or shared GB of data.
Without the phone you can connect to your home wifi connection to get internet.   This does not use your mobile data plan.

  • Verizon iPhone - mobile hotspot and other questions about the data options

I just ordered the Verizon iPhone. Can anyone explain the options here:
    1) Unlimited corporate email & Web (business and personal email) vs. Unlimited email and web for smartphones (personal email) - what's the difference?
    2) "3G Mobile Hotspot 2GB" - does this mean that there's no way I can share my 3G connection via wifi without paying the extra $20/month?? How about tethering to a single computer (USB, BT, or WiFi) - does that also require this extra option?
    3) equipment protection - what's the difference between Extended Warranty, Asurion Wireless Phone Protection, and Total Equipment Coverage?
    thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi
Regarding your #2 question; yes, you must pay $20/mo to use the 3G Hotspot aspect of the iPhone, same as with any of Verizon's phones that offer this feature such as the Droid X, HTC phones, etc. And, there is NO additional charge to tether it to your computer; it's $20/mo regardless. You can still use the iPhone's WiFi feature to search the web which is part of the regular data plan. We're only talking about paying the $20/mo for the "up to 5 devices" jumping on your phone as a hot spot.
I'm an Apple fan, have my MacBook Pro, but my phone is a Droid X. I've been a Verizon member since a year before they became Verizon. Additionally, I am part of the Verizon & Motorola test forum; testing new software updates as they come along.
Something you should know about Verizon's 3G Hot Spot feature; it has issues. Those of us in the Motorola & HTC forums have experienced identical issues with regard to the 3G Hot Spot feature; it disconnects every 2 minutes, even when you are actively surfing the net. Verizon & Motorola Support have been very helpful to provide what they believe are fixes, including: changing the channel, hard resets, clearing cache, etc. It does not work. Most of us believe, this is NOT a Verizon issue, but a phone maker issue.
I also have Verizon's MiFi 2200. It costs $59/mo and is purely a hot spot device; again up to 5 devices. I use it at home, for my lap top and for those who need connectivity. It outperforms the 3G hot spot feature of the Motorola & HTC phones by leaps & bounds, and I suspect it will out perform the 3G hot spot feature on the iPhone. Additionally, you get 5GB of download with the MiFi which Verizon is planning on offering increases to 8GB & 10GB. There is NO plan to increase the 2GB download limitation on the 3G Hot spot of the iPhone & other phones, and anyone who does basic software downloads & pics, knows 2GBS is not a lot space.
So, I would recommend not paying the $20 until this is resolved. If you do, you could pay $39 more for a total of $59/mo for the MiFi, download the software to you home computer & notebook, and end up canceling your home internet service. I did this and have saved $70/mo in my total utilities.
One other important note: Verizon's VZManager Software for their phones & MiFi. If you did pay the $20/mo for the iPhone and decided to tether to your USB port (for power while using) and you were to use the 3G hot spot feature, it will NOT work on 64 Bit computers, regardless if you are using the WiFi feature or directly using VZManager. The MiFi has this same issue. It will only work on 32 Bit when tethered. So, you'd have to reboot your computer to 32 Bit, if you have that ability. On a Macbook Pro, simply restart holding down the "3" & "2" keys.
I have no idea why Verizon can't simply upgrade the firmware, even recent firmware upgrades have not resolved this. Most new computers are 64 Bit now.
Despite this, I use my MiFi 100% untethered and carry my charge cord in my bag as it also works on my Droid, and I presume they may do the same for the iPhone; reduces the need for multiple power cords.
I really looked forward to the 3G feature of the Motorola & HTC phones, but honestly, it's just not there yet; mine was slower than Dial Up, and I'm not kidding.

  • Still tethering issues with iOS 6.1.4

    Hi
I have an Iphone 5 and recently upgraded to iOS 6.1.4 and running latest itunes
I used to be able to tether my Android tablet (ASUS) to my Iphone when travelling on the train to work but now it is impossible.
I can connect my partner's Samsung phone to my Android but cannot use my Iphone to tether to the Android.
Cannot use bluetooth to tether either.
So Apple, given everyone is complaining about tethering with their Iphones what are you going to do about it????
You need to pick up your act otherwise we will go to Android phones and you will lose significant market share.
I used to love my Iphone and upgraded to the Iphone 5 but seriously considering ditching it now if there is no prompt response from Apple to fix this bug.

We are not apple here and you do not address apple.  We are users just like you, after all this is a user forum. My guess is that what you are wishing to do is not provided for by the bluetooth profiles available for the phone.  If you don't like the phone get a different one.... it is your choice

  • Fujifilm Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

    Hi!
Today Fujifilm shared "Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®". And they shared only 1 exe file, which i can't open on my Mac=). I try open it on PC, but it can't open without HS-V5 ( i needn't it, because it work only on Windows)
    They write:
    To use "Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®" you need to purchase "Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 5".
*For customers who don't have the HS-V5, "FUJIFILM Tether Shooting Plug-in" will be able to be purchased at Adobe Exchange site."
So...i already purchased Adobe CC for photographers. I try find it in Adobe Exchange, but doesn't find it.
    May be somebody know anything?
Or may be somebody knows about tethering future with fujifilm X-T1 in new Lightroom 6?

The current situation seems to be this:
You are licensed to use the plug-in on a Mac or a Windows PC if you have purchased and installed H5-VS software.   Since H5-VS is only a Windows product the download for the plug-in is a Windows EXE because when you run that EXE it'll check for the H5-VS software installation and if it doesn't see it, it'll stop, so to be successful in extracting the Mac plug-in you have to use a Windows PC and have purchased some Windows software.
You can examine the contents of the LRPLUG.EXE by renaming it to something like LRPLUGIN.EXE.ZIP and opening it with 7ZIP; however, the contents aren't something where you can just extract and run w/o the license check.
The only way forward seems to be to purchase the H5-VS software and install it on Windows and then download and run the LRPLUG.EXE on that same Windows computer to extract the plug-in installers, and then run those on the appropriate platform.
However, the H5-VS software doesn't appear to be for sale, anywhere, although the Fuji people do seem to hint they will have a solution at some point in the near future--perhaps it is only available in Japan ATM.
Most of this information was gleaned from the download page for the plugin, here:
    Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® (Windows 8 / 8.1 / 7 SP1, Mac OS X 10.7-10.10) | Fujifilm Glob…
Which is the page you get to after agreeing to the terms and conditions of downloading the plug-in from this page:
    Tethered Capture Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® (Windows 8 / 8.1 / 7 SP1, Mac OS X 10.7-10.10) | Fujifilm Glob…
The bottom line is that while the tethering plug-in is for both a PC and a Mac the licensing dependency is on a Windows-only program so the plug-in installers are contained within a Windows-only program and the missing link is how to acquire the required H5-VS Windows program to satisfy the licensing requirement for the plug-in packaging utility so it'll extract the plug-in installers for each platform.
From what the pages, say, there is also going to be a version of the plug-in available on Adobe Exchange that won't require having H5-VS already, I guess, but that is not available, yet, either, so lots of announcements, and mostly a lack of follow-through..

  • When do you need Internet Tethering rather than Blackberry Bridge?

I've been using my new Playbook Bridged to my Bold 9700 since I got it. Since I've been able to get to every site I wanted to get to on the browser all of this time using the Bridge, I didn't even know about Tethering.
Today I was attempting to setup some new email addresses to the Playbook, and it said that it couldn't do it till I enabled the Internet Tethering option. The tethering would occur to the same Bold 9700 anyways that it is currently Bridged to. So what are the times that Tethering is required rather than the Bridge?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Bridge mode works as an extension of the phone. Browsing with tether gives greater speed and better stability especially with sites that stream or load with a lot of data.
Tethering uses the phone as a mobile modem rather than a pass through data device. When bridged the tablet is read back as if it is a phone rather than a stand alone tablet computer type device. In the bridge mode some sites may appear as if for a mobile phone rather than for a tablet or computer.
My preference is to use tethering whem web browsing. I use the bridge mode mainly for email, schedules, and PDA type functions.

  • Having trouble tethering the Nikon 7000 in Lightroom 3.6

Seem to be lots of talk about tethering the D7000 but no one actually says it's working for them. I have worked through all the help here in the Adobe Community but no joy when it comes to connecting the camera. Here is a short run down of what I have done to solve the issue.
Ensured Lightroon is up to date.
Ensured my camera has the most current firmware
    Reset the Lightrooms "preferences" file.
    Tried different USB ports
Checked that the D7000 is on the Adobe list for cameras that can be tethered in LR
USB cable is under a meter long and no USB hub is being used.
No other software is running in the background that might control the camera
The camera can be tethered with Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2 with no issues. I am using Windows XP home as an OS. The computer has a AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor running at 2.0 GHZ with 3 GB of RAM. Pretty sure we are ok here.
I would really like to use this feature in Lightroom, does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks..

    Hi Sumit,
The problem is no camera detected. The camera RAW version is 6.6
About the only thing I have not tried is re-installing Lightroom. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • Tethered shooting with Canon 70D and Lightroom 5 on Mac

I am tired of looking at a tiny screen on my Canon 70D and learned about tethering my camera to the Macbook. Well, I am about to purchase the cable, and thought to look into if Canon 70D is supported. Now I see that many have problems with it and wonder what I can do?
This forum stuff is so tedious and I just want a straight answer from Adobe what is possible and what is not, yet they make you search the Internet for hours wondering how to formulate the question so you get the right answers. Then you wait…. and "maybe" you get the right answer.

    70D isn't supported for tethering.

  • Tethering the iphone 5 (Verizon)?

Anyone know if its possible to tether the iphone 5 over the data cable? I know you can tether through wifi but thats not what i want? If tethering isn't possible with the cable how about tethering over bluetooth? I want to tether with a Windows notebook.
    thanks,...

I'm having the same problem I think. With LTE personal hotspot on my iPhone 5 I can only get a max of 1.5-2 Mbps. I am also with Verizon and have unlimited data. When using my phone I average about 24mbps and when tethering to iMac I can only get about 2mbps. And it doesn't matter if I connect via wireless or USB cable. Also when I connect my iMac to my phone hotspot using wifi I constantly keep losing connection for some reason like every 5 minutes.

  • Pls. issue an official announcement if tethering i...

been hearing about tethering update in Lumia 800 for a long time now... still no confirm date as yet! unfortunately I bought first and came to know later that the basic feature which I have been using for more then a decade on almost every phone manufacturer is not available on Nokia's flagship product... even the retailer confirmed that the tethering is there in Lumia, don't blame him, as unsuspecting guy wont have thought that Nokia would do such harakiri.. Wake-up Nokia and at least issue an official announcement if tethering is coming on Lumia800 and if yes by when?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Again to reiterate that I have been using tethering for that long, and forget about smart-phones, even simple java phones, e.g. Motorola L-5 kinds.. had this as a basic offering. MS OS - Mobile 6.1 had this at the time of release on HTC!
My contention is that Nokia has still not issued any official statement (on their website/via customer support) if/when will this be avaliable, hence was urging them to share it with their customers and the purchaser has the right to know.
It is Harakiri, if competition has made it avaliable and you don't.. more so, if new release (900)  in the same series (Lumia) is getting the same from release. The legal scenario is same for every  manufacturer.
Flagship product is Lumia, 900 is just another model in the same series..
    kevgallacher wrote:
I doubt you have been using mobile tethering for more than a decade. It is not a basic feature of a phone, it is an advanced feature. There are quite a large number of phone that don't support this and many carriers who don't allow it. iOS didn't support it till version 4.3 and Android didn't till version 2.2 Wp7 has only supported it since Mango. So it in no way a standard feature of a mobile.
Nokia have also confirmed that it is coming and that it is coming soon, it is expected to arrive with Tango update which is either this month or May.
I don't see how this like Hari-Kari as it was left out intentionally due to legal issues, and I don't believe Nokia are ashamed of it and they have no reason to be.
Also Nokia 800 is not the flagship phone, the 900 is which supports tethering from release.

  • Tethering with Froyo

    Hi,
I just updated my Defy to Froyo and looked forward to use tethering now, but it doesn't work here.
As written in the wiki I loaded the module usbnet but there's no usb0.
    Am I missing a package?
\edit: Before anyone aks: yes, tethering is activated on my phone

No idea. I know how to do it with my old Nokia phone, but I haven't tried the same thing with my Defy yet.
Ok, I just tried. Listing all bluetooth services of the phone, Dial-up Networking is not one of them. So the same method won't work. I'm using CyanogenMod though, and maybe I'm missing some setting somewhere. Try something for me:
    - activate bluetooth on the phone, and make it visible
    - on the computer, run 'hcitool scan' and note down the bdaddress of the phone
    - scan for services: 'sdptool browse <bdaddress_of_phone>'
    - what you need is the channel of the Dial-up Networking service
    - modify /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf, adjusting the channel accordingly, it was channel 2 on my old Nokia:
    # RFCOMM configuration file.
    rfcomm0 {
    # Automatically bind the device at startup
    bind yes;
    # Bluetooth address of the device
    device <bdaddress_of_phone>
    # RFCOMM channel for the connection
    channel 2;
    # Description of the connection
    comment "Dial-Up Networking";
    - restart the bluetooth service: /etc/rc.d/bluetooth restart
    - now /dev/rfcomm0 is your modem, use your favorite dial-up tool, like wvdial, the number to dial is *99#
Where it fails for me is that 'sdptool browse' doesn't list a Dial-up service, just a few others. But I'll do a search, maybe I'll find something out.

  • Macbook forgets APN when tethering

I've got the following problem with my Late 2009 standard macbook.
When using my blackberry bold to tether everything works fine, I use the APN live.vodafone.com and all is well. However, when I restart the macbook for whatever reason the problems start. In the connection preferences section everything is still the same however the APN has resetted to "internet.com".
I was wondering if there is a way for me to have the macbook remember the settings correctly?

Since you have already been successful in making it connect, I think the problem you're having is that you aren't saving the settings. Every time you reboot, the computer is probably reverting to 'Automatic' settings and you have to re-enter the information.
You could edit the Automatic settings, but I would recommend creating a new 'Location' That way, if you don't want to tether to your Blackberry all the time, but use another means of network access (WiFi or Ethernet, for example), you can go back to 'Automatic'.
PLEASE NOTE: I'm on Leopard 10.5.8 - your menu choices could be different in Snow Leopard 10.6.x
To create a new 'Location', start with System Preferences, Internet and Network, Network, then choose
    1. Location - to make your preferences 'sticky', add a new location by scrolling to the bottom of the list and choosing 'Edit Locations' and add a new location called Blackberry Tether or some other descriptive name that is meaningful to you.
    2. Click on the + sign in the lower left corner and add your Blackberry by configuring it as Bluetooth device. You don't have to add it again if it is already displayed.
Here's a link to an article about tethering a Blackberry Bold to a Mac. You DO need to register in order to download a required modem script (zip file) from the website.

  • Linux tethering requires Ovi Suite (Windows) conne...

I started a thread here a few weeks ago about tethering my E73 to a wired/wireless router, to give broadband Internet to computer OS's that lack the right USB modem driver.  I'm still working on that, and only recently got the E73 to work with Ubuntu Linux at all.  Linux would see the phone and create a ttyACM0 device, but the phone always refused to respond to modem commands.  I fought with it for over a week...until I installed Windows XP and tried connecting with Ovi Suite.  This worked on the first try.  The next day I returned to Ubuntu, which now was suddenly able to connect effortlessly  as well.  The only explanation I have is that the E73 needed Ovi Suite to install a driver on the phone or flip a hidden switch to enable tethering.  Is anyone else familiar with this phenomenon?  I suppose I could hard reset my phone to know for sure...but it's new and I really don't want to do that.
    Any thoughts?

I never had any such problem with other Nokia devices (6280, N73, N95, N96, 5800XP, E72). I suspect you were missing an init command of sorts somewhere that is issued by OVI Suite.
I had reasonable success with this secomdary init string (issued after ATZ and the ensuing OK response):
    AT+CGDCONT =1,"IP","xxxxxxx"
where xxxxxxx is the APN of the access point you want to connect to.
