Access to the desktop

Hi, I have problems accessing the desktop using Expose (F11)
The other day when you close a parental control application started having this problem.
I reinstalled the system but the problem is in the preferences of my user account, I tried with another userand this error disappears. I moved several preference files to the desktop and I rebooted to be recreatedwith default values but not solved.
It's funny, because it only affects the desktop features (F11) and all windows (F9), the rest works perfectly. My system version is 10.6.8
Does anyone know how I can fix?
Thank you,

  • Application no longer allowed access to the desktop in Mavericks

HI I have a particularly irritating problem.  For a while now any application that attempts to access the desktop upon initial startup or to save a file to it will hang requiring a force quit from the finder.  Installations go without a hitch.  This problem only appears when apps either default to the desktop on first run or when they are directed to save a file from them to the desktop.  Drag and drop operations from local folders like documents and downloads or external drives or folders to the desktop have to problem doing so.  I have run repair permissions on my main drive.

Any Ideas on what to do so I can get functionality back on my system.  Currently I am on a late 2007 iMac extreme edition 2.88gighertz model with 4 gigs of ram.  I am running the latest updates to Mavericks.  Overall its not a problem with programs that I can set or open with no preference to start but there are some programs that default to the desktop upon initial startup.  These are effectively unusable at present.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Or you can do it from the Recovery volume as described by machack in this post:

Re: Where did my HOME folder go?
Feb 27, 2012 7:28 PM (in response to Baba)
    1. Restart holding down the Command and R keys.
    2. You’ll be at the Repair Utilities screen. Click the Utilities item in the Menu Bar, then click Terminal.
    3. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
    4. The password reset utility window launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the dropdown below it, select the user account where you’re having issues.
    5. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the Reset button there.
The process takes a few minutes. When it’s completed, restart.

  • Can't access anything but desktop when batching.....

I have Photoshop CS3 on a PC running Windows Vista.
When I try to batch or automate I cannot access any files other than the desktop.
If I do file>automate>batch and then go to choose folder, the only folders I can access is the desktop. There are no plus signs and no other options except desktop.  The same thing happens if I go file>scripts>image processor.
Someone told me this could be a permissions problem with Vista. Does anyone know? How can I fix it?
    Thanks!
    Kerry

You may need to promote yourself to aa higher user level - Power User as a minimum. Scripting uses only the most rudimentarry file dialog handling and therefore will often not be able to cope with special security stuff or customized folder permissions. In your case the behavior would be consistent with the normal User account type, where ertain directories are hidden and not accessible to that user group.

  • Where do the things I save to the desktop go?

My preferences in Safari are set so that anything I save from the Internet goes to the desktop, but none of the documents or pictures I've saved are showing up on the desktop. Any ideas about where they might be?!

Create a new Finder window, click on the item in the sidebar with the Desktop icon, and then view the window's contents as a list; this will show you contents of the desktop which would be offscreen in icon view. If you find your items by doing this, drag them to another location inside your home folder and then back onto the desktop.
Also try creating a new folder on the desktop and seeing if that shows up when you navigate to the desktop in the Save dialog box. Another option is to check that you have Read & Write access to the desktop in the Ownership & Permissions section of the desktop's Get Info window; if this has become set to Write Only, files and folders can be added to the desktop, but the Finder won't show you any of them.

  • I cannot access dock, no desktop, time or battery icons?!!!

My laptop is only 3.5 years old.  Normally whenever I'm informed there's no space on my hard-drive eventually I copy things onto an external hard-drive.  I hadn't got round to doing this last time this message came up.  The next day I turned on my laptop, the dock isn't there, my desktop is blue with no files on it apart from my stickies, the time and battery icon at the top right aren't there.  I have tried hiding and making the dock visible again to no avail.  Also If I delete a sticky, next time I turn my laptop on it's back.
I can plug my external hard-drive in and access things from there, and I can open Safari from 'recent items' as the icons on the top left are visible, but I cannot open finder.  No Apple app's work, itunes, facetime etc again accessed through 'recent items'
Help please?!!!  There are no Genius appointments in central London?!

When you start in SafeBoot, do you have more access to the desktop?
Booting into this should use less system resources and perhaps may
allow you to look into Console Utility and others, including Disk Utility
as the running system sees it. Logs in Console should tell you details.
    Maybe too many.
Do you have a current backup of everything on the Mac's hard disk drive?
I'd suspect the internal HDD may be failing, as it would be about time.
A few years of moderate use, and one that has survived that long is due.
You may be able to boot the computer so as to see Recovery and run
OS X Utilities from there to use Disk Utility on the computer's HDD with
it unmounted. This could be OK to verify, and repair the hard drive.
Be careful to not erase the hard drive from this version of Disk Utility.
Even with a Time Machine backup, you'd still be best to have another
external hard disk drive with its own power supply, capable of support
to a Clone; a bootable complete copy of your Mac's HDD & system.
Depending on what OS X version and MacBook specs, the direction
you may take could vary. This information is basic to a reply...
    Good luck!

    Hey GingCarv,
Great question. You'll want to download the movies from your purchase history. The following article explains how to do so:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

Note: At this time, movies are not available for automatic downloads.

  • Can no longer access contextual menus on the desktop but still can in Dock

What's going on??? I used to be able to right click my mighty mouse on an icon on the desktop and access contextual menus. Now when I right click, all the icons on my desktop disappear then there is a slight pause before they reappear. If I right click in MS Office the application now crashes. Amazingly the contexual menus still work on the Dock and in Safari. Does this sounds like a virus/malware or is it a bug in my system? Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution to it?

    Hi, xstatical.
If Finder quits when you either:• Control-click an object.
    • Right-click an object using a two-button mouse. This may be due to either:• Installed software that added a bad contextual menu item.
    • Removed software that left a contextual menu item behind. What software did you last install or remove? Does its documentation refer to its use of Contextual Menu items?
Contextual menu items can be installed in two places:(1) Your Home > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder.
    (2) Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder. If the item is in the folder listed in (2), then:
    - Under Tiger or Panther, you'll be prompted to authenticate this operation by providing your Admin password when trashing it.
    - Under Jaguar, you may have to change the Owner to you (via Get Info > Ownership and Permissions) before you can trash it.

  • The desktop on which I had Lightroom and PhotoshopCC installed failed and I no longer have access to it. How do I deactivate the software on those machines so that I can reinstall it on my new Mac?

Question: The desktop on which I had Lightroom and PhotoshopCC installed failed and I no longer have access to it. How do I deactivate the software on those machines so that I can reinstall it on my new Mac?

Absolutely - but I had no idea there were two versions. When I got my new laptop I just went to the Adobe site to download and install LR5. It never asked if I had a license; it just directed me to install CC to start a trial which I thought I could license after downloading. Several sessions and many hours of looking through the forums and Google for an answer I never ran across anything that made this distinction. I still haven't found a path from www.adobe.com that would get me to the standalone download page (it's probably there, wasn't obvious to me) and looking at the download page it doesn't make any CC/standalone distinction.
There are many places I could have gotten a hint - for instance the license could be tagged "stand alone edition", the CC-version could recognize the stand-alone key and either accept it or produce a more meaningful error message, or the download site or the CC app could ask if I had previously purchased a key, etc.
It was my error to assume this was a deactivation problem, but it looked the same as a previous deactivation problem with Photoshop.
In any event, thank you for your help.

  • 10.6.8 upgrade - I want Apple to fix it, not me have to do the work.  I no longer have access to the header menu for the desktop.  No History, no QUIT.  Is Apple aware? Planning a fix for the fix?

I installed the 10.6.8 upgrade over the weekend and now have no access so the main desktop menu.  I am having to hit power off button to power down.  The links work for one application load after I boot up.  Cannot tell if it is is just Safari or not.  DOes Apple monitor these postings and do additional testing to correct?

    balto,
You'll have to forgive me but being from an IT background there are certain things you take for granted, such as backups!
That said when I really needed my Time Machine backup a couple of years ago, it did an epic fail on me.  Ever since I have been backup paranoid.
I now have approx 6 current backups of data including one offsite.  Call me over cautious but its better to be safe than sorry!!  I now use a combination on Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner to produce periodic backups and also bootable clones.  With external drives being so cheap these days there really is no excuse.
So taking on board your comments and those of others  :-
    i)     Take a backup, either via Time Machine or some other cloning route such as Carbon Copy Cloner.
ii)     Repeat step i) but to another disk.
iii)     Download the COMBO OS update - NOT the delta one.  It will take longer but its worth it.
    iv)     Turn off Mac
    v)     Disconnect ALL external peripherals except keyboard/mouse e.g those devices required to boot.
    Vi)     Turn off Mac
vii)     Boot Mac in Safe mode by press shift key whilst switching on the Mac and leave shift pressed until Apple logo appears.  Mac will take longer to boot but will present user login with red Safe mode tag.  Login.
viii)     Run a permissions repair from Disk Utility.
ix)     Run COMBO updater and allow the Mac to reboot.
    x)     Login as normal but immediately run permissions repair again from Disk Utility.
xi)     Reboot Mac for final time again and all should now be well.
Think that should just about do it though as with everything be careful and use at your own risk.
    Regards

  • Is it possible to remotely access the desktop in OS9.1 from a newer G5 mac?

I have an old 7600 Powermac running OS9.1 and several peripherals on the SCSI bus. I would like to be able to access this machine and the peripherals via my newer G5 machine. So I'm wondering if its possible to remotely access the desktop on the OS9.1 machine with the existing software or do I need some type of network administrator software? Thx in advance!

Yes, there are several remote access apps in the app store.  LogMeIn, TeamViewer, and others.
Search the app store and find what works best for you.

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

  • Finder quits on clicking HD or trying to access the desktop in a Window

I noticed that after installing 10.5.3 that double clicking the HD Icon caused the finder the quit (and restart). Also, the same thing would happen if I tried to access the desktop in a finder window (by clicking on it in the left pane). No big deal, I thought it would be fixed in 10.5.4. Nope, same problem. I tried Disk Utility both from the machine HD and from the Installation Disk. Nothing found wrong either way. To be safe I installed the 10.5.4 combo update, no help. Still nothing really to worry about. Then I noticed that a couple of folders had disappeared from my desktop (which I can see). I tried to use Time Machine to retrieve them. Much the same problem, If I try to access the desktop on Time Machine both Time Machine and the Finder quit. These folders are not all that important, but at this point I am getting worried. All help appreciated.
    (This is on a 20" iMac G5)

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. It has taken me a long time to reply because, all though doing what you suggested almost worked, the failure was/is hard to "pin down.
So it worked, as long as I kept all windows in Icon view. If I changed any windows to List View that eventually caused the problem to reoccur. If you have changed some of the windows to List View, then (double) click on the Hard Drive, the finder quits and then activates again showing the preferences finder window in List View". If you change the preferences window to Icon View than all is "good" again. Now you can open the HD without the finder quiting and it is displayed in Icon View. From that window you can now use the left pane to get the desktop in a finder window in Icons. Now, and only in Icon View, you can get Time Machine to work and doing so I was able to recover the two folders I had lost (and three photos from the desktop I did not realize that I had lost).
I also created another administrator user and after signing on there I found much the same strange behavior with one additional wrinkle. The wrinkle was that although you could open the HD in Icon View, if you changed to List View, nothing was there.
So in summary, I can do what I need but the machine is still a little "screwy." If you have any further suggestions I will certainly try them.
