Accessibility of iTunes and iPod for Blind users

In any of the updates to Itunes or Ipod has the ability to use the product by the Blind been considered? Being a Low-Vision/Blind user I think accessibilty has gotten worse instead of better. This is not just an Itunes on Windows Issue. Itunes on the Mac barily works with VoiceOver
In 7.0.X here are a few things that broke.
1. The Album flipping view mode cause Screen Magnifiers to have problems with Overlay and the Album art is not magnified.
2. No way to navigate the Itunes store if you are totally blind. Why not just let us browse it in Internet Explorer or Firefox and then download afterwords into Itunes.
3. Standard methods for navigating Menus, Tree Views (source list / playlist side) do not work always and some times have very unexpected results.
There are very easy ways to fix this. As you are updating the application make sure that each control or widget gets its own MSAA information. On the Mac side make your developers actually follow your own standards for accessibility even if it means rewriting the program. Well they are at it they can fix most of iLife and Pages.
Now onto the Ipod 3g 4g 5g and the Nano 1g and 2g, These devices with some practice can be used by a blind person if they are setup correctly by someone sighted. Thats all well and good except if you just went out and bought a shinny new 80gb Ipod and now don't know how to navigate it. Well the solution to this is actually very easy. Durring startup it could play a quick set of clicks to let a blind user know it is doing something. Then once it is up and running the menu system could playback via the headphones recorded speech files stored in directory already on the shinny new Ipod. Something like "Main Menu" "Music", the user slides their finger around the wheel one spot to the right and "AudioBooks" and so on. Now your question comes to artists and genra's and Album titles. This could be a feature of the new ITunes 7.1.x where when you are syncing your Ipod it goes to the iTunes store and gets the appropiate audio files needed. or using the Very Nice Apple TTS makes the files on the fly and stores them. You say this would use up space on the Ipod, well yes it would and you could make so a sighted user could turn it off until the iPod resets or they if they are really cramped for space could remove the directory with the sounds in it, but restoring the iPod would put these features back in place. These features have more use then just for the blind, who are highest population for buying audio content be it Unabridged audio books, CD's, or from online sources. Once these features are out in the general public and touted as be available you will have the busy business traveler to the jogger using them, epecially when it is not appropriate to take your eyes from something else, like driving. A driver could just reach down and touch the iPod and press the menu key and here "Music Menu", "PlayLists". Now we click the center button and our drivers heres "Gym Workout" clicks the wheel around to the right and heres "Peaceful Drive". He/She press the play button and heres "Playing, Peaceful Drive, 15 items in list" now this next part whould need to be toggleable on and off, while the iPod is cueing up the song it could say the song name and artist but this could be distracting.
Now if you really got brave with this project you could just add the TTS (Text to Speech) program into the Ipod. It would probably only take as much space as the new games you are selling for the 4g 5g and nano's. I know the Ipod has enough processer power. If it can play compressed video it could be executing a speech synthesizer in the background. With the dropping cost of the iPod I can see you may have to make this an add-on. That would be fine but include like a ten-day trial period with each new firmware update and have it on by default. This way allowing the user base to have time to see what it can do for them. If this is the choice then it should be a very inexpensive addon. Like in the $40 range. With the very extinsive userbase of Ipod's out there the Return on Investment should be very quick. if just 10% of the 300,000 blind people in the USA bought it, that equals 30,000 times $40 equals $120,000. This is not including the Learning Disabled, general poplulation, and people in foriegn countries who would love to have the stuff read it them. Now back to the blind, currently the devices made for the blind that are "accessible" cost from $400 and up that can play digital content not burned to a CD. So, if this was made for the Nano 2g a blind person could spend $200 on the device and $40 on the speech after the ten-days are up or they are coming close. The are still ahead by $160. Now if the person is a eclectic listener like my self then I would buy the 80gb unit at $350 and add the speech for $40 and have all the space I needed for my music, books, and my recordings I do with the Belkin recorder.
Another feature that should be looked into is the ability to play Daisy Content from Recordings for the Blind and Dislexic http://www.rfbd.org This is the new style of releasing text books to those you can not read regular print. They are stored on a CD in mp3 format with a encryped index. Now this type of thing is not a problem since you already have support for your own and Audible's digital rights management in iTunes and adding another method would not be that hard. An iPod Nano 4gb could hold 6 to 8 books for a Grade School, Middle School, High School, or College student. That would be greate, one small device to play content and no worrrying about what Cd the chapter is on or where you put the CD's, and not having to carry around a CD player just for the books. Also an iPod has become common place enough to not be notices.
Shawn,
This will be cross posted to my blog and to the Ipod Forum here. My Blog is located at http://wizardwlf.spaces.live.com

My goal is not to directly influience Apple. I am trying to influiece you the customer to write feedback to Apple, if not on your own behalf, for your family member who is blind/low vision, a blind co-worker at your office, a friend of a friend even. Apple will see my one comment in feedback and say he is just an extremist and being it is just one comment just ignore it becuase their are much cuter things some marketing person wants them to do. They may just respond with use the Shuffle it doesn't have a screen. Why should the blind be limited to 1GB of space?
So here is your chance. Talk to your friends who use the Ipod/Itunes, talk to the manager at your local Apple store, tell them all to think about what they could do with a talking iPod, let alone the accessibility this would give the blind.

Shawn,
I did a quick search of the Apple web site and found a fair bit of information on accessibility issues for the Mac OS X operating system in general (you might want to have a look here if you're interested) but couldn't find anything relating to iTunes for Windows in particular.
Since Apple has set up these forums for users to help one other with their problems, there isn't much we can do as far as acting on your suggestions. You might want to submit your comments directly to Apple by filling out the forum on this page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html .
All the best!
I wrote back:
Yes that is a pretty advertisement page for the Tiger Accessibility and for the accessibilty of the hardware.
But what is missing is the same page for iTunes and iPod. Those two products which right now are Apple's Hot market. They do not even train the sales staff in the Apple Stores to use and demonstrate these features to a parent / spouse/ child of someone with a disability.
VoiceOver is great in the finder and terminal and mostly works in Safarie and Mail. It mostly works in system dialog boxes but forget AppleWorks, GarageBand, Microsoft Office. The ProTools folks are actually working on making that program work with VoiceOver even better.
My best recommendation to anyone on this forum who is a Mac User. Use SearchLight to find VoiceOver. Now read some of the documentation to get the gist of how it works. Once you have done this, Start VoiceOver and turn off your screen. Try using the keybard commands you just learned or even the ones you think you know in iTunes. You will find it extremely hard to navigate.

  • Delete iTunes and ReInstall for new user issues.

    Gave husband my old computer when I got a new one. He needs HIS iTunes account installed. I deleted iTunes and anything associated, reinstalled but it still opens with my info. and when he plugs in his new phone - shows my phone info.
    I've deleted, iTunes, QuickTime, associated files, searched and removed all files.
    How do I permanently get rid of me on my old computer so he can start fresh.

    You can reinstall iTunes, however you have to ensure that you drag the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file back into itunes before you sync your phone. Doing this makes your library appear as it was before so you get back your preferences, playcount, etc.

  • Access to itunes gift card for new users

    I am a new user to itunes. Yesterday I put my itunes gift card pin number in the redeem box. then I followed the on screen instructions. after I put in my name and address a box appeared saying "We are unable to complete your registration at this time please try again later".
    I try to do the whole registration again from the beginning.
    I tried to put in my itunes gift card pin number again a message appeared saying "this gift card was already redeemed". I would like to know, How can I access my $25 gift card?

    Buy an iTunes card from any retailer in your town that sells them and redeem it.

    Hello, BAHannebaum.
    The article below should resolve any device not being recognized in iTunes issue that you are experiencing.  The most common issues are the Apple Mobile Device Support driver or iTunes is outdated.  Start with the first step and test the results after each step processed.

  • Videos for iTunes and iPod

    I have a lot of films I've downloaded in .avi format. I mostly watch them on my MacBookPro using the freeware VLC, but when it comes time to travel I'd like to have them ready to watch on my iPod Classic.
    Is there a way to convert these .avi files not only to for the iPod (which I know I can do via "export" in Quicktime Pro) but also to play from within iTunes at the same quality level they are as .avi files?
    Meaning, is it possible to have just one version of a video that will look as good on the 15" laptop monitor as well as an iPod Classic?
    Also, if this is possible, is there a way to batch process all of these .avi files I have? With QT Pro I'd have to do it one by one.
    Thanks...
    Scott

    Well if you can convert it and it still looks good on the "big" screen, then it will look fine on the iPod.

  • WHY FREE ITUNES PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLY FOR USA AND NOT FOR OTHER USERS OUTSIDE USA

    I am so impressed wit the welcome page saying "Join the conversation. Share tips and solutions with fellow Apple product users from all around the world."
    Apple mentioned for their products users around the world but many of their free itunes products are available only for USA and not for the users from the other side of the globe?
    Is this Apple a fair and customer oriented company or full of bias and Only money oriented company.
    If apple could not make thier other FREE stuffs available outside US territory then better for thsi company to just sell their products in USA. its just so disgusting...  If we need a certain apps (FREE APPS) available only for US based users.
    If you think US users and other country users are paying the same prices for their iPad 3G/4G WIFI 64GB and iPhone 3G/4G 64 GB like hat I did having the 2 gadgets altogether but my investment ends to disgusting as the apple company cound not treat people equal then.....  I want to return all this **** stuffs

  • Frustrated to the point of scrapping iTunes and iPod!

    Everything worked perfectly until the latest iTunes and iPod 'upgrade'. Since the upgrade both iTunes and my 60MB video iPod are useless. On the iTunes side, everytime I try to enter the iTunes Store, I get a 'network connection reset' error (access to all other Apple web site locations works OK). On the iPod side, at least 75% of the stored podcasts cause the Ipod to crash and reset (same files played perfectly before the update). At first I thought my iTunes problems were caused by my not accepting having Apple poll the contents of my Music Library looking for missing cover art (so they say). I finally gave in, but still no luck getting into the iTunes store. Can someone give me the appropriate links for restoring iTunes and the iPod firmware to their 'pre-update' status (i.e. rolling both back a rev.)?
     20" Intel iMac (2.0GB RAM, 500GB HD + 1.5TB external, 20" Cineama Display)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   All tools, no talent!

    Now that iTunes 7.0.1 is out, let's see if it helps!
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    eMac Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    Unfortunately that did't work either. Strange I can access all other Apple web locations as well as any other web site, but not the iTunes store. I wonder if they've put some new security features in V7.x that is causing the problem. My internet access is via satellite so there is considerable latency. I wonder if this is raising a flag some place. Based on past experiences, trying to get help from Apple is an exercise in futility so I don't even bother any more.
    I swear that they are going to keep tightening the screws with DRM and other foolishness to the point where not even paying customers will be able to use the online services. For example, I've been trying to access the Music Store to pick up an episode of a TV show that I missed. A quick web search turned up at least a dozen bit torrent feeds for the same program. If I can't buy it, I'm left with few options.
    Another posting to this thread suggested I go back to V6.0 via the installation disc that shipped with the iPod. Unfortunately I can't find it, but even if I could, Apple would be relentless in trying (forcing) me to come up to the current rev.
    I recently retired and bought my first iMac and iPod and junking my Windows computer and Creative MP3 player. I figured, going 100% Apple would insure worry free computing for the duration, at least that's what the commercials would have you believe. I now see why the Apple user is a kid and the PC user is an older man. When I was the age of that kid I could have better tolerated the frustration.

  • I have ipod classic (about 3 yrs old) and when recharging, everything on it is gone.  When I tried copying the saved/backup items, itunes and ipod were stuck...doing nothing/frozen.  Help!

    I have an ipod classic which I had bought about 3 years ago.  I plugged it into my computer this past weekend to charge and it showed me that there were nothing on it...no music, no movies, no photos, nada.  I had updated the program on my computer and when I tried to reload all the stuff that I had saved, it locks up my itunes and ipod.  It doesn't do anything!  I don't know what is going on....Help!?  Anyone!?  Any clues?

    Which version of iTunes are you using? (most probably the latest, a lot of this hung iTunes coming in)
    Which iPod software is shown on the iTunes summary screen?
    My suggestion go on Diskmode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
    Connect it to iTunes via a USB2.0 port (For Mac please dont use the Keyboard USB port and for MB, only one USB port is for iPod, the other will freeze your iTunes as the resource bus is shared with other devices )
    Then update the iPod software or Restore the iPod.
    Try to disconnect your iPod from the PC, if you are not charging or Syncing the iPod, or else, some Apps will just trigger a Restore and delete you iPod.
    For Mac users, who has a FAT32 iPod, you may find iTunes Restoring it to HPS+ if you leave it connected overnight.
    For Windows users, some Winsock layer conflict with iTunes will trigger the Restore.
    Good Luck!

  • Limiting iTunes and QuickTime to one User Account in WinXP

    I'm the Dad and the admin on my XP machine.
    I have 3 non-admin accounts for the kids.
    Only 1 kid has an iPod and uses iTunes.
    No one else uses or needs iTunesHelper, iPodService, or QTTASK.EXE.
    I know that I can kill each service inidividually from Task Manager, but the non-admin accounts can't. They suffer the slowdown caused by these services running from the background and constantly going out to the web for un-needed and unwanted activities such as checking the Apple Store, etc.
    I don't want this behavior.
    I want to prevent these services from loading and running for all User Accounts except the one.
    Please give me steps to limit these services!!!
      Windows XP

    As far as I can tell, this is NOT a solution.
    As I try to allow the one User Account to load and run the services, ALL accounts are forced to load and run them.
    As I try to disable the services from loading and running on other accounts, they won't load and run on the one User Account that I want them to.
    Does ANYone know of a way to disable iTunes, iPodHelper, and qttask from loading on selected User Accounts?

    i got my ipod three years ago and installed it onto my only computer. now im in college and have my own laptop. how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop? i've tried downloading the software onto the new comp but when i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs. is there any way to keep everything i have just transfer it over the my new comp? (also my mom just got a nano and wants to know if she can have a separate itunes library and all on the family comp if mine has to stay there)
    dell   Windows 2000

    "how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop?"
    The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
    The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
    If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    "When i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs"
    When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
    You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
    Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

    Due to divorce, all my music is on my iTunes and iPod. I have had to buy  a new laptop and want to transfer the library to the new computer before deauthorizing the old one. I dont want to have to use an external drive every time I want to listen to my music. How can I do this and have the same basic iTunes setup as before? HELP!

    You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
    iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year.  It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you.  Items that it does not find in the catalog it'll upload and store these in the cloud for you and you can download them on your devices.  See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
