Accessing SQL Server from ORACLE using Transparent Gateway
So I had downloaded the gateway installer and was following the guide here to set up the Transparent Gateway for SQL Server: http://www.orafusion.com/art_orahs.htm
After I had created the database link, I was prompted the following error when trying to do a simple select statement from the SQL Server DB:
>
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
12154. 00000 - "TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified"
*Cause: A connection to a database or other service was requested using
a connect identifier, and the connect identifier specified could not
be resolved into a connect descriptor using one of the naming methods
configured. For example, if the type of connect identifier used was a
net service name then the net service name could not be found in a
naming method repository, or the repository could not be
located or reached.
*Action:
- If you are using local naming (TNSNAMES.ORA file):
- Make sure that "TNSNAMES" is listed as one of the values of the
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile
(SQLNET.ORA)
- Verify that a TNSNAMES.ORA file exists and is in the proper
directory and is accessible.
- Check that the net service name used as the connect identifier
exists in the TNSNAMES.ORA file.
- Make sure there are no syntax errors anywhere in the TNSNAMES.ORA
file. Look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters. Errors
in a TNSNAMES.ORA file may make it unusable.
- If you are using directory naming:
- Verify that "LDAP" is listed as one of the values of the
NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile
(SQLNET.ORA).
- Verify that the LDAP directory server is up and that it is
accessible.
- Verify that the net service name or database name used as the
connect identifier is configured in the directory.
- Verify that the default context being used is correct by
specifying a fully qualified net service name or a full LDAP DN
as the connect identifier
- If you are using easy connect naming:
- Verify that "EZCONNECT" is listed as one of the values of the
NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile
(SQLNET.ORA).
- Make sure the host, port and service name specified
are correct.
- Try enclosing the connect identifier in quote marks.

Hi kgronau,
>
After changing a listener.ora file you need to STOP and START the listener to get the changes loaded. It looks like your listener is not serving the 1524 port which could be related to the fact that you didn't stop/start the listener after you've edited the listener.ora file.
... But as stated earlier - please do not use a 10.2 listener to start an 11g gateway. Instead configure the listener of the gateway home.
>
I did restart my listener under services.msc whenever I make the changes but there are no effect. Please also note that I can only find "OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener" under my services.msc. There is no 11.2 Listener. I did install the gateway and the installation was successful as far as I can tell. But perhaps because there's no 11.2 Listerner under my services.msc, could that mean it was a bad installation?
>
Next point is the tnsping you've used is 11.2. You need to make sure that you use the tnsping of the Oracle Database home as the database initiates the gateway connection so the database home tnsnames,ora needs the tns entry for the gateway.
>
My current PATH environment variables setting is as follow: C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\tg_1\bin;C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin; So perhaps, I just need to ensure the 10.2 ORACE home is the first?
>
As a final tip: There are so many web sites explaining how to configure DG4ODBC - many of them are faulty. How to connect to a Sql server from Oracle using db link
Hi All,
Does anybody have any idea about how to connect to a sql server from oracle database using db link to syncronize the data? I need to pull the data from Sql server table to Oracle tables and relay messages back to the sql server.
Thank you,
Praveen.we have 2 products - DG4MSQL and DG4ODBC.
DG4ODBC is for free and requires a 3rd party ODBC driver and it can connect to any 3rd party database as long as you use a suitable ODBC driver
DG4MSQL is more powerfull as it is designed for MS SQL Server databases and it supports many functions it can directly map to SQL Server equivalents - it can also call remote procedures or participtae in distributed transactions. Please be aware DG4MSQL requires a license - it is not for free.
Check out Metalink and you'll find notes how to configure both products.

Hello,
I use Entity Framework code first approach.
My project is working fine with SQL Server. But, I want to access Oracle too. I want to switch SQL Server and Oracle in run time.
I am able to access Oracle using "Oracle.ManagedDataAccess.EntityFramework.dl" in a new project.
But, Is this possible to access SQL Server and Oracle in the same project.
Thanks,
MuruganThis should be possible with a Code-First workflow. In Code-First the database mapping layer is generated at runtime.

Accessing SQL Server from Oracle
I found an article:
http:www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3442661
It shows how to setup a connection from Oracle to SQL Server.
I am new to Oracle Using SQL Loader and PL/SQL.
I would like to use the SQL Loader in Oracle to load a table in SQL Server. It is my understanding that a ctl file is used and is called by an Oracle application.
I would not have an Oracle application. I would like to use the ctl file to load the SQL Server table. Can someone point me on how to use the ctl file for SQL Server?
Also, in PL/SQL would there be a connection string to connect to SQL Server when accessing a table.
Is there a book or some documentation that would address the above?
Thanks in Advance.that article shows you how to access SQL Server database through Oracle, therefore you have no need to use SQL Loader to load data from SQL Server bcos it can be queried directly by using simple select statement.
If you want to load the data into Oracle just use CREATE TABLE ... AS SELECT ...
in PL/SQL, what you need is the database link.

Connecting ms sql server from oracle using db link
Hi,
Source : Oracle 11g on linux
destination : ms sql server 2005
i need to create the db link from oracle to ms sql server to view the tables , is it posibble without configuring the gateways( as looks like it is licenced product)
Please let me know any alternative to achive this
Thanks
PGRThere are 2 gateway - the commercial Database Gateway for Ms SQl Server which requires a license and the Database Gateway for ODBC which is for free. The license for DG4ODBC is included in your database license. You only need to install a suitable ODBC driver on your Linux box (for example use the MS SQl Server ODBC driver for Linux - details can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=36437 ). and then configure the gateway using the My Oracle Support Note:

Accessing Sql Server from AS400 Java program
Hi everybody,
I am trying to access Sql Server from an AS400 Java program. I have tried various Sql Server JDBC drivers including the Microsoft one but no luck yet. When i try to compile my Java program (with driver file in the classpath) it gives some errors on the driver jar file and also it throws out lots of unreadable text characters. This gave me a feeling that probably its a character coding issue with the jar file, so i tried ftp the file in binary mode as well as copying through the Operations Navigator. But still compilation is giving the same kind of errors.
Do I need to have some special JDBC Drivers compiled for AS400 specifically. My understanding was that Java is platform independent so any JDBC Type 4 driver will work.
We are running Java 1.3 on the AS400. Any help on this issue would be great.
Thanks
InderThanks for the help. I am writing a Java program after a long time that's why was making that mistake. Now the program gets compiled correctly but on running the program i am getting the following error message:
java 001-0070: Exception JVAB544 not expected
/myjava/test/msbase.jar: 001-0050 Syntax error on Line 1: token ')' not expected
/myjava/test/msutil.jar: 001-0050 Syntax error on Line 1: token ')' not expected
/myjava/test/mssqlserver.jar: 001-0050 Syntax error on Line 1: token ')' not expected
I have no idea what is this error about. Though the same driver files don't give any error when running on a Windows machine.

Connecting to SQL Server from Solaris using Perl & Oracle.
Hey All,
Using the DBI.pm provided by the default Perl package that comes integrated with Oracle server, I am being able to connect to the Oracle database through Perl.
But is there a way I can connect to SQL Server through Perl using any package provided by Oracle like ODBC or something else (on Solaris)
I am using following version of Oracle server on Solaris 10
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production
TIA
ParagThe problem is I cannot install any third party package but I found something. Have a look at this:
bash-3.00$ pwd
/opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.4.0/perl/lib/site_perl/5.8.3/sun4-solaris-thread-multi/Win32
bash-3.00$ ls -l
total 10
-rwxr-xr-x 1 oracle dba 4532 Jul 7 2004 DBIODBC.pm
bash-3.00$
Will explore more and keep you all posted.

Migrating from SQL Server to ORACLE using SqlDeveloper tool - IN OUT CURSOR
Hi All,
I am new to Oracle. I am asked to migrate a database from SQL Server to ORACLE. I have migrated all the SP's and functions except 2. I am facing the following problem. Pls do reply me if anyone knows the solution since I am struggling for the past 2 days for these two functions
the function is as follows in ORACLE.
create or replace
FUNCTION ABC
AA IN VARCHAR2,
BB IN DATE,
CV_1 IN OUT SYS_REFCURSOR
When I tried to call from some other function its showing me an error.
I called from another function as follows:
ABC(CC,DD,CV_2);
Shall I know how to call the above function? I feel someone has faced the same problem before. Thanks in advance for the help.
Thanks,

SQL query against tables on MS SQL Server and Oracle using Oracle BI
Hi All
I have two databases Oracle and MS SQL Server. I want to write a query statement which will retrieve data from both databases and publish this data into one report. That is I want to join/merge data from tables in both database into one report with one SQL Statement something like:
Select o.F1,o.F2, m.F1,m.F2
from
table@oracleServer o,
table@microsoftSQLServer m
where o.F1=m.F1;
Can Oracle BI Publisher do this?
Basically I want to query simultaneously two heterogeneous data sources in one SQL statement. Is there such a tool? I don't want to build a warehouse by moving data from SQL Server into Oracle or vice-versa. I don't want to duplicate data. I want to be able to query data at its source via 1 SQL statement.
How would one go about doing such a thing?
Many Thanks
Kubilay.Hi Matt and Thomas
Many thanks for your replies.
Yes I have to do the join. Even worse I have to write an Aggregate query like this!
Select o.F1,o.F2, m.F1,m.F2, count(*)
from
table@oracleServer o,
table@microsoftSQLServer m
where o.F1=m.F1
group by o.F1,o.F2, m.F1,m.F2;
These are 2 different systems (hardware & software) which actually do the same job, they produce transactions for a common business entity. Kind of, both sell tickets for the same ABC ferry company.
I can not put them side by side on the dashboard, as I need to aggregate the data and present it maybe in a Oracle BI Report for Accounting and Financial reconciliation purposes.
The truth is, as it is. I can't change it, is too late.
I have to device a way to harvest both systems as they are. I don't want to move around data. I thought looking at Oracle BI I could write SQL against multiple Data Sources. I am struggling to find a way. As it seems that it can "SQL query" 1 data source at a time.
I have been hinted on another forum (OracleTURK) to use Oracle Transparent Gateways and Generic Connectivity. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14232/toc.htm
Shame, I have to pay licenses for OWB and Oracle Transparent Gateways. I thought DB vendors can do better. Why do I have to pay to access the other 50% of the market.
I can understand the performance implications this might have. Because of it I might even be forced at the end to move data (ETL) into a separate database, slice it into partitions and manage it that way. Pitty because currenlty I only need one report out of these systems but seems like will be dear to get.
Thank you for all your help.

BaraaHi,
Firstly, try to configure your gateway listener on another port than 1521 as it is the default one for database. Don't forget to change also the port in TNSNAMES.ORA.
Then use the host machine or ip address rather than the local host in the LISTENER.ORA and TNSNAMES.ORA.
Avoid to use $ORACLE_HOME in the ENVS from LISTENER.ORA but use a complete PATH.
Then test your ODBC connection outside Oracle. What is the result?
Try to get result of the following commands on the Oracle machine1 :
$cd /usr/bin
$./odbcinst -q -d
$./odbcints -q -s
Change parameter in gateway init file:
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=DEBUG
Execute your SELECT statement:
select "id" from "test"@monetdb;
Get the gateway trace file in /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/hs/log and send us
Thanks

Connect to SQL Server from Oracle
Does Oracle offer any connectivity to NON-Oracle databases such as SQL Server from within the Oracle database itself, similar to a database link ?
Yes, it's called Heterogeneous Connectivity. Basically how it works is you set up an ODBC data source on the Oracle server
and need to modify the tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files. Once you get it set up it works exactly like a dblink. You should be
able to find information on it in the Oracle manuals or from Metalink. There's also a Heterogenous Connectivity forum on OTN. If
you can't find anything let me know and I can send you some documents on how to set it up. I think the hardest part for you might
be finding a SQL Server ODBC driver for HP-UX. -
Accessing mysql database from oracle using dg4odbc
I've been trying to create a database link from a MySQL database to Oracle using the Oracle dg4odbc gateway. I downloaded and installed DataDirect's ODBC package which includes mysql ODBC library (ddmysql24.so) and a generic ODBC libary (libodbc.so). After creating the DSN in odbc.ini, I tested it and it can connect to the mysql database. Then I created the init{SID}.ora file in hs/admin directory, added dg4odbc lines in the listener.ora, and added lines in tnsnames.ora. Then I tnspinged the new SID with success. Finally, I created the database link. However, when I tried to access the database link using the commands "select * from mdl_user@moodle;", I got the ORA-28500 error like the following:
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
[DataDirect][ODBC 20101 driver][20101]You have an error in your SQL syntax;
check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right
syntax to use near '"mdl_user"' at line 1
ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from MOODLE
My mysql database is utf8 by default. Do I have to use latin1?
It seems to me that the dg4odbc translates the sql commands incorrectly (having double quotes around the selected table).
Any help is greatly appreciated.
JeffreyThe syntax error occures for example when MySQL isn't running in ANSI mode and thus does not allow double quotes around the objects. DG4ODBC 11.1.0.6 by default always adds double quotes to table/column/view names.
A quick test to check if you hit the double quote issue would be to set the MySQL DB into ANSI mode:
- Open SQL*Plus
- execute:
DECLARE
ret integer;
c integer;
BEGIN
c := DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH.OPEN_CURSOR@moodle;
DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH.PARSE@moodle(c, 'SET SESSION SQL_MODE=''ANSI_QUOTES'';');
ret := DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH.EXECUTE_NON_QUERY@moodle(c);
dbms_output.put_line(ret ||' passthrough output');
DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH.CLOSE_CURSOR@moodle(c);
END;
- Now run your select statement
=> if it now works, you can permanently change the MySQL config to be ANSI compliant or you can apply the 11.1.0.7 patchset to DG4ODBC.
