Accidentally wiped wrong disc during backup, can data be recovered?

I was doing a backup prior to bringing in my MacBook Pro and accidentally wiped the wrong external hard drive.  Disk tools say it can't be repaired or verified.  Is there any way to recover the data?

  • Can data be recovered from a crashed HD?

My friend has an 3rd Gen iMac G5 (iSight) that appears to me the HD is out of. I can boot up with an external HD and go to Disk Utility and the internal HD does not show up. I tried resetting SMU and PRAM and other things before that with no luck. If the internal is indeed shot, can an expert recover anything form it, i.e. photos?

"internal HD does not show up."
Could be a sign of directory damage. The following should be used to repair:
    DiskWarrior
Highly recommended for *directory damage* repairs.
    TechTool Pro
    Multi-functional utility.
    Drive Genius Multi-functional utility.
You will need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.
You must use the versions that are compatible w/your OS system & keep the utilities updated to avoid damaging/harming/trashing your system.

Yes but very expensive. If possible check out the following:

  • Urgent!!! mavericks wiped out my entire backups and data on external devices

I've upgraded to Mavericks recently. It's working fine on my 13-inch retina macbook. I'm currently using 2 external drives for time machine backups and also storing my work related data and iTunes files on these external drives. This morning when I when switched on my macbook strangely it gave me incorrect external drive name. When I looked into the 3TB disk it was blank. I've ejected the drive without writing to it.
Any suggestions or tools to retrieve data wiped in OSX?
My entire music and dvd archive and 20 years of work related data are gone!!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Sertac Orcun

FIrewire & Thunderbolt drives are having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
    Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
*However some are reporting now even USB HD are having problems IF they are running WD software
Recommend anyone DO NOT ATTACH any WD MyBook externals (firewire, thunderbolt or otherwise).
I dont have same to test, so I dont know if the problem is in the firmware on the SATA bridge or if its a problem with the WD software

  • Zeroed drive 4 times - can data be recovered?

Just sold my old g3 clamshell iBook, and I used the disk utility (or something like that) to zero all the data. Because I'm fairly neurotic, I went through that whole process about four times. How easy or hard would it be for the new owner to recover my data if he decides to get snoopy?
    Thanks!

Thanks -- luckily, the guy who bought my G3 iBook was an innocent looking kid who just seemed genuinely happy to have the computer -- and I'm guessing that by the time he sells it to someone else, all of his data will have filled up the drive further, so I can't see where anyone would be motivated enough to hire a pro to go treasure hunting on the HD.

  • Accidentally cleared Library in iTunes. Can it be recovered?

I accidentally had my library cleared in iTunes and I was wondering if it can be recoverable? All my files are scattered around so it will take time to re-add them. I do have Norton Erase Protection on my Recycle Bin so it would recover any deleted files. Is there any way to restore the library before it was cleared? I have a previous library file from 9/12 when I upgraded first upgraded to iTunes 7 but iTunes will not let me import it saying it is not a valid exported file.

I have always had this exact problem. So annoying. It seems to happen when clicking a song with album art that hasn't been preloaded or something. The artwork seems to lag and suddenly I'm renaming a song. I now have to right click play every song just to avoid screwing around for 5 seconds every time I want to start a song.

  • Using DVD-R as backup for data

I thought I could use a blank DVD-R disc as backup for data/files, as I've done with blank CD's in the past. However, loading a blank DVD just starts iDVD and I can't figure out how to transfer files, plus there is no disk icon on my desktop. I'm sure this is a real beginner question, but I just got my iMac. Thanks, David

    Hi David
First thing you need to do is change your preferences so that the DVD mounts on the desktop. Open System Preferences by click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and selecting "System Preferences..."
The select the CDs & DVDs pane in System Preferences. You can change the "When you insert a blank DVD" option to "Ask what to do". You can now close System Preferences
The computer will then ask what you would like to do when you insert the blank DVD, selecting "Open Finder" will mount the DVD on the desktop.
    Hope this helps

  • Accidentally wiped out windows while installing Ubuntu.

Recently I bought a laptop at Best Buy (Lenovo Ideapad N586) and used a upgrade offer to upgrade to Windows 8. Today I installed Ubuntu and intended to dual boot but I screwed up and accidentally wiped the drive during the install. The laptop did not come with any windows disks. Will I have to buy WIndows to reinstall it?
    Thanks!

Thanks, but that did not work. When I erased the Hard Drive it must have wiped the recovery partition also, When I press that button, it just boots into Ubuntu.
    Hi
As the button is not working and you erased the whole hard drive, then you cannot anyhow revert to the windows 7 without the windows disk. However it is neccessary that you will have to buy disks. As you have ubuntu, you could use it to download windows 7 official iso from my digital life forums and use the product key that is found below your laptop. Link for iso is below
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-link...
You could either burn a disk of the iso or make a bootable disk/pen drive from it.
Use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool to make a dvd/usb of iso. After installing windows then install all the drivers for windows 7, Download below

  • HT201628 My girlfriend accidentally rebooted her iPod during an update, and now it won't boot. How can this possibly be fixed?? She says the OS has been wiped. You know how to fix this??

My girlfriend believes she's wiped out the OS on her iPod 4th generation  she said she did this by accidentally rebooting her iPod during an update, and now her iPod just shows the apple logo then fades to white. My question is, can this be fixed? Or is a new iPod necessary??

If you live near an Apple store take it in for diagnosis. Don't forget to make an appointment online first. If you don't live near a store, you may get help by searching "youtube" for DFU Restore ipod. This is not difficult to do but it requires proper timing to get the device into DFU mode.

  • Satellite L350 - Can't install Vista and how can I backup my data?

    Hi to all
I have a Satellite L350 and recently I've installed Vista Home Premium in a different language (the OEM Vista was in English) hoping I could activate it with the OEM key, but I didn't succeed.
When I wanted to re-install the OEM Vista from WinRE I realized I can't access it and then I had a "brilliant" idea that if format the C partition with the Acronis Disc Director it would boot from WinRE. It didn't.
Fortunately Ive burned the recovery discs before. The only problem is that the recovery disc formats the entire HDD and I have data on the second partition I've would like to retrieve.
I tried to install again the retail Vista to backup the data from the second partition (yes, I'm an idiot, I didn't do it before) but it stops after the first reboot. I get a black screen with a low dash blinking.
I really need that data, please help!

    Hi!
I can tell you why you cant install a retail version of Vista by using the product key. This is pretty easy because the key on the bottom side on the notebook belongs to the preinstalled OEM version and cant be used by a retail version.
However, I think the best way to backup your data would be that you put the HDD in an external HDD case and then you can backup your data on another PC or notebook.
Such external HDD cases are not expensive but very useful.
    Bye

I transferred data to my MacBook Pro, then I accidentally did an UNDO and all the data desapeared....What can I do to recover it???

Sorry, but it's probably lost, then, presuming you never made a backup. There's a dim chance that you could recover at least some of the data using a file recovery utility such as Data Rescue from Prosoft Engineering, but the chances aren't good and get lower the more you use your computer.
    Regards.

  • TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

    Hi to all!
    I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:
    Drive:
    a
    1 TB,
    Thunderbolt,
    Buffalo
    b
    2 TB/ FW
    LaCie
    c
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    d
    3 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    e
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate backup
    [to be purchased]
    f
    500 GB, internal
    Macintosh HD
    Partitions
    1
    1
    1
    2
    1
    USAGE:
    editing videos, one
    active project at a time
    mainly for camera
    archives, music files,
    FCP events, projects
    and exported movies
    same as the LaCie,
    as a backup of data
    intend to have 2
    partitions of 1.5 TB each;
    one partition for personal
    data and the other partition
to back up data on the
    Thunderbolt [current project]
    intend to use this for
    TM back up of my
    Mac's internal HD
    applications, documents etc.
    backed up by:
    one partition of 'd'
    by the 2 TB Seagate
    backup 'e'
I would like to know whether I could do these things:
Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

    EXT. DRIVES:
    a
    1 TB
    Thunderbolt
    b
    2 TB/FW
    [LaCie]
    c
    2 TB/ USB
    [Seagate]
    d
    3 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    e
    2 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    USAGE:
    scratch disk
    [planning to have
    only one active
    project at a time]
    camera footage
    FCPX events, projects
    and completed movies
    Same as the LaCie,
    as it's backup
    To be used as TM
    backup for my Mac's
    internal and also to
    the scratch disk.
    Planning to have it in
    2 partitions: to have
    a 'secondary' copy of
    my Mac's IHD on one
    partition and to have
    personal 'net retrievable'
    data on the other partition.
    'MY
    OBSERVATIONS'
    my projects are usually
    less than 10 minutes
    and hence I trust that
work would be fast and in
    case of drive failure, I
    would be losing only
    one project.
    I am importing camera footage
    primarily into this drive and
    being FW, data transfer is
    fast.
    Am manually copying
    files from the LaCie
    onto this.
    This drive is not a
    brand new one, but
    has been given to me
    by the company's
    agent as a replacement
to my earlier 2 TB drive
    which had failed.Hope
    this also will not fail!
    Because of the 'uncertain'
    performance of the
    3 TB Seagate, I intend
to have a copy of my
    Mac's IHD in one
partition. I intend to place only
    such data upon the other
partition that I will not be
    greatly affected should the
    drive fail.
If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?
