ACL messages in disk utility?

These keep popping up, and never seem to be gone after many repairs...Just wondering what they are if anyone knows..

I believe the /private/var/root folder is the equivalent of a user's home folder, only for the root user. While I have never enabled the root user, I have launched Finder from Terminal as root. Thus, when I do a sudo list command on the contents of the root folder from the drive where I have a root session I have Desktop folder there, with an ACL just like a normal user home folder would have. So I suppose if one ever enabled the root user it is perfectly possible to get the same sort of ACLs on the folders that one gets in a normal home folder.
To check to find out what the ACLs are, start with this command:
sudo ls -ale /private/var/root
Press Return, you'll be asked for your password. Type it carefully (nothing will appear on the screen) and press return again. The result on the drive where I have actually used root is the following:

The Desktop folder has the usual "everyone deny delete" ACL on it. The Library folder has no ACL at all. On the drive where I have not monkeyed around with root there is no ACL on Library, and there is no Desktop folder.

The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.

Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
       it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
Buy a new Drive. Or two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.

ACL Missing message in Disk Utility

I changed my main HD on my MacPro and used Disk Utility to copy my System "Macintosh HD" to the new disk.
Everything seems OK, I can start up, but when I did a "verify permissions" on the "new" system disk I get many "ACL missing on "System/Library/User/Template/..."
as well as one
"ACL missing on "Volumes"
Is this serious? Can I "repair" safely?

did not transfer the ACL information back to your system installation.
Unfortunately permission repair won't fix ACL problems, it will only tell you about them.
"System/Library/User/Template/..." is the directory the System uses to grab the map (template)
for new User accounts. The missing acl's are the usual generic variety (everyone deny delete) placed
on user's folders.
The one missing on /Volumes is:
"everyone deny addfile,add_subdirectory,directory_inherit,onlyinherit"

Maybe nothing, maybe trouble, I don't really know. I do know they are part of SL's System design.
If it were me, I would reinstall Snow leopard, you won't lose any data. Just startup from the
Install DVD and install over the existing system (do NOT reformat), then later re-apply updates
after you verify everything is working properly.

Can't install OS 10.4 on 10.2.8 G4, error message in disk utility

I bought 10.4 to upgrade from 10.2.8 on my G4. Apple said I had all the system requirements. Have 28.0 GB capacity, 13.5 GB available. Format is Mac OS Extended. Have 640 MB and 450 MHz. When it said error try again, I tried several times and then ran disk repair. Message as follows: "Underlying task reported failure on exit. Invalid extent entry. Volume check failed. 1 HFS volume checked. 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error." I need to upgrade because I bought a new printer and it won't work with 10.2.8. Please help!!!

You need to run Disk Utility from your computer's install disk. If that won't fix it then you will need either Alsoft's DiskWarrior or Micromat's TechTool Pro, one of them should fix it.

ARDAgent error message in Disk Utility

I just got a new 27" iMac 2 months ago and when I recently ran Disk Utility to repair permissions I got this message.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
What do I do about that? How do I repair it? Is it even something that needs repairing? Does 'modified' mean there is something wrong with it?

It's a normal, albeit annoying, status message and can be safely ignored.

Error message using Disk Utility

Okay, my System Preferences is not showing up, so I ran the Disk Utility and this is the error message I got:
Volume Macintosh HD was corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired...then use Disk Utility to repair the disk.
What do I do? Do I reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard or is this a whole other issue? Do I take it in to get checked out? Can I fix this without taking it in? HELP!

What you need to do is repair the disk using your install disk (after you make sure that you've backed up your important data or have a current Time Machine backup):
insert install disk and hold down C key while restarting
once booted from the install disk, go past the languages, and then up to Menu bar - Utilities. Open Disk Utility and run repair disk. If it says "repaired", you're done. If not, run it again until you get the repaired dialog. You can then restart from your internal disk, eject the install CD and you're all set.
If Disk Utility can't repair it, you'd need a more powerful application or it could be other things - we'll wait with that until after you've run the repair function.

"Keys out of order" message in Disk Utility

Hi,
I was just doing a regular maintenance check with Onyx and to my surprise it said I needed to repair the disk using the Installer DVD and Disk Utility.
I did this and again to my surprise I seem to have a problem.
After the whole processs is complete these messages come up:
"keys out of order" (in red)
1 HFS Volume repaired (in green)
1 Volume could not be repaired (in red)
I don't know what to do about this. On the one hand my system seems to be running fine, but on the other if these errors are coming up then surely there is an issue which I need to resolve.
Could someone enlighten me on what to do next?

Thanks. Unfortunately my battey died and now I am stuck on the apple logo at reboot. Opening disk utility via the install disk doesn't work as disk utils doesn't recognise any disks (even though I hear them spinning)
I am lucky in that I am able to access th powerbook's HD in target mode via firewire on my G5
so I am going to copy over a lot of my data and then invest in Diskwarrior.
However, I am a little confused with the Diskwarrior website. I would prefer to download as I am not near a shop to buy the software and I would rather not pay for express amazon delivery.
Would I be able to use the download of diskwarrior on my Powerbook?

Basically I am in a hurry to get my Powerbook working by Thursday my two options are
a)Buy from Amazon and pay extra to get express delivery by wednesday
b)Buy download from Alsoft (with cd version on way in 2-3 weeks)....however if the download version is not sufficient then i'm screwed.
I'd really appreciate help here. It just happens that I have to work away on Thursday....and I therefore need my powerbook. I usually use my G5 in my home studio.

So, like many who have tried to install the new update, mine says it cannot be installed due to a damaged Macintosh HD. Attempting to fix it through the Disk Utility available during the install allows me to Verify Disk. I get an error that it needs to be repaired, but the repair option is greyed out. Booting it into Recovery and using Disk Utility again shows a damaged disk, but this time I can repair it. It repairs and everything reads as fine; even verifying the disk again shows that the system is fine. This is where it gets screwy.
Upon reboot, the Mavericks install wizard once more gives me the damaged HD message. It once more shows a damaged disk through the Maverick's screen Disk Utility. Booting it into recovery shows the damage again, is fixable again. Rinse, repeat.
Booting into Safe Mode and running Disk Utility shows an undamaged Mac HD. It also allows me to access everything as normal (which is how I am on here now), albeit much more slowly. Additionally, my Boot Camp partition works just fine.
I wouldn't mind abandoning the install, but the Mavericks install will not allow me to boot into my Mac HD because of some error. I also cannot avoid restarting into the Mavericks install wizard unless using Safe Mode. I attempted to delete the downloaded Mavericks "application" in the launch pad, but this does not affect my normal boot, and it appears again the next time I boot into Safe Mode.
I don't know what's wrong with this, but I don't thing it's a hardware issue, because this only affects Mavericks. Can anyone tell me how to either 1) install Mavericks, or 2) banish this **** from whence it came so I can have my computer back? hello. i know there are a couple of messages that i can safely ignore.. i read the article but i just got the scariest message... this is the whole transcript and i hope someone can help me with this.. i dont wanna go through the whole reinstalling the whole OS..... i dont have an external (well i do but i cant make it work with time machine)

Can't access/mount hard drive, Permission denied message in Disk Utility.

Hello,
Need some help here. I was upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5. I got an error message when I tried to upgrade from the DVD. My hard drive had an exclamation mark by it and I was told I would need to erase it in order to install. When I tried quitting the installer, I had to go through startup disk to pick my Hard drive, which showed it had 10.4 installed. When I tried restarting, it would only boot off of the DVD. I checked startup disk again, but my hard drive was now not visible. I have a tower with a back-up system on it. When I picked it, it started up fine. I went under disk utility and the hard drive is listed, but is ghosted/grayed out. Repair & Verify Disk permissions are ghosted back as well.When I try to repair or verify disk, it says it can't it gives me the disk number and sector number and Permission Denied. I poked around on disk utility for info, and it looks like it doesn't have a mount point anymore and under permissions, it says that they are not enabled. So, apparently the access privileges have been erased & I don't know how to mount my disk again. I'm assuming I need some sort of commmand line in Terminal to restore my priveleges or get it to auto-mount. I do not want to erase my drive to upgrade. All my applications are on that drive. Please help!

Warning messages in Disk Utility

When running Verify or Repair Disk Permissions there are several Warning messages I receive. Examples are: Warning: SUID file "sbin/unmount" has been modified and will not be repaired; Warning: SUID file "bin/rcp" has been modified and will not be repaired; Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired. There are 3 or 4 others but I think you get the idea. Are these anything I should be concerned about. The reason I have run this utility is because I have had several issues with my MacBook Pro crashing and having to force shut down.

Continued ACL messages under Disk Utilities

I continue to get the following messages when I check for permission errors:
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
I have loaded 10.5.2 and I have run Disk Utilities three times. First time took over two hours, last time about 30 minutes. No errors were found but these ACL files are apparently slowing things down. I searched a thread on this issue and different people appear to have solved this issue. There procedures did not work in my case. Is there anything else I should try to do to get rid of the ACL files?

Time Machine is a back up you have to set up to back up before there is a problem like a hard drive failure.
It is possible to recover files from a failed drive, but it is an expensive proposition.
There is a faint hope that an app like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro might repair the drive. You could try making an appointment at an Apple store and ask a technician there to take a look... the diagnosis will not cost you.
