ACR v4.1: Canon files being overly smoothed?

Hello,
I prepared a long knee-jerk post about having the ability to completely disable luminance noise-reduction in ACR, as one was (presumably) able to in previous versions of ACR. After working with numerous files from my Canon 30D and Pro1, I noticed that even with all noise-reduction and sharpening sliders at zero, ACR v4.1 still seems to do some significant luminance smoothing, especially on higher ISO files from my 30D and even ISO 50 files from my Pro1 P&S.
I was quite upset by what I had seen and took this as a fundamental change in Adobe's philosophy to raw processing. However I now do believe this to be (mostly) a bug, oddly enough Canon specific, since I have now tested ACR v4.1 with higher ISO shots from numerous other cameras - Nikon D2X, Hasselblad H3D/39 (DNG export from FlexColor), Leica M8 and a Fuji S5 Pro - and found this problem to be nowhere near as dramatic and, indeed, at times not even noticeable at all. In fact, on many of these other tests, files from the H3D/39 in particular, I feel ACR v4.1 is actually doing fantastic job!
Granted, I don't have anywhere near the selection of shots from these other cameras as I don't own them personally (I just have many tests from ones I have access to at work), however I am reasonably sure ACR v4.1 does not have the same problem with those cameras as with shots from the Canons I do own. Again... hoping this is just a bug.
I will be following this post with my original (long) knee-jerk response as I think it is important that Adobe hears such feedback in any case, whether this issue with Canon files is a bug or is intentional.
So, you are warned... the post following this one is long!

Hello,
[ Before reading this post, please make sure you have read the one immediately preceding this! ]
First off, apologies, as this is quite a long post. System info: MacBook Pro C2D (3Gb RAM), OS X v10.4.9, Photoshop CS3 with ACR v4.1, Lightroom v1.0. Tests done with Canon EOS-30D & Powershot Pro1.
While there are a lot of things I really like about the image processing in the new version 4.1 of ACR, like the new optional edge-defringing, the more flexible sharpening controls (with no black halos around specular highlights!), less white-speckling in dark areas of higher ISO shots etc., I have come across a very disturbing fact which I believe has already been noted by a few others as well.
The fact being that v4.1 of ACR is now seemingly applying a certain degree of luminance noise-smoothing to raw files that is camera and ISO specific and, as far as I can tell, cannot be turned off. In my humble opinion, this is a bad bad thing! ACR has been known in the past as having one of the most "hands-off" approaches to raw image processing and this new smoothing effect is going against the grain! Pardon the pun... :-)
I first noticed this when I was processing ISO 50 files from my PowerShot Pro1. Being a P&S, even at ISO 50, there was a certain amount of noise texture which I found rather pleasing but with ACR v4.1, even with all noise reduction and sharpening set to zero, images that I post-sharpened in Photoshop had a certain watercolor-like look, somewhat similar to what, for example, Genuine Fractals might give one upon upsizing an image. When I went back to the Lightroom processed versions, which is using the older raw rendering engine, I did not see this effect and indeed, there was a dramatic difference between the two.
I had extensively tested ACR v4.1 with ISO 100 files from my EOS-30D and 20D, and did find that with certain settings, the new sharpening controls would render a similar watercolor type look when one is viewing files at 100%, but when sharpening was dialed right down and the image was post-sharpened in Photoshop, the differences between the old and new ACR, while visible, were not too dramatic and I did actually prefer the slightly cleaner rendering of skies and shadow areas in v4.1.
However after seeing what v4.1 ACR did with my Pro1 files, I decided to look at some ISO 1600 shots from my 30D and compare them to the previous version of ACR. Whoa! What a dramatic difference! There seems to be a considerable amount of luminance smoothing going on, even with all sharpening and noise reduction controls at zero, which wipes out subtle surface textures and can make edges of fine detail sort of "blend" together. Please do note that I realize that on anything other than the biggest prints or enlargements (or viewing at 100% zoom), one probably would not notice the effect of this new image processing, however...
I primarily do landscape photography and for me, preserving every last bit of texture detail is very important in making an image look natural. I much prefer a more "film-like" rendering of a raw file, even if that means a bit of graininess, rather than a smoothed image that looks artificial and more processed. In addition, this new image processing in ACR v4.1 limits the amount of post-sharpening that can be done to an image since too much sharpening starts to bring out edge-artifacts where ACR has made "decisions" on what was legitimate detail and what was sensor noise.
What I will say, is that this new processing in ACR v4.1 actually seems very sophisticated, and reasonably benign in many cases, low ISO digital SLR shots for example, so for certain types of images and applications, it may well be a very good thing, however certainly not for everything. So this brings me to my request...
I humbly request that the developers of ACR put in the option to turn any and all noise smoothing off in the next version of Camera Raw. Just a checkbox in the Detail Pane labeled "Preserve All Texture" maybe, or have luminance smoothing truly at zero when the slider is at zero. As I mentioned, I think the new processing might be preferable for certain types of images and workflow, so I don't want to completely go back to the old system, but I really do want the option to preserve as much image detail as possible when needed. I expect that there are many pros out there that will agree with me.
As a bit of background, I have been working in the professional imaging industry now for well over 10 years, having started off back in the days of the Kodak DCS-420 and Nikon E2. I manage the digital imaging department in a high-end professional camera shop and have extensive experience with all manner of digital SLRs, medium format digital backs, film scanners and so on.
I always have been a strong proponent of shooting raw and, in the past, have always felt that Adobe Camera Raw gave, by far, the best looking rendering of raw files when it came to detail and a general lack of demosaic artifacts. I have experience using a large number of other raw conversion programs available (Capture One, Raw Developer, Canon DPP, Nikon Capture, Hasselblad FlexColor, SilkyPix, LightZone, Aperture etc.), and while I haven't always found the color rendering to be best in ACR, as far as image detail and creating a clean, natural looking file that doesn't look "digital", I have always found ACR to be absolutely top-notch. Color rendering one can fix in post... however when a raw converter does detail destroying smoothing, creates nasty demosaic artifacts that pop out when sharpening etc., well that is something than cannot be fixed or recovered in Photoshop afterwards! Well, at least not without an inordinate amount of work or trying to mask the effects by adding noise etc.
In fact, a number of revisions ago (maybe v3.4?), Adobe subtly changed the raw rendering of ACR and noted at the time that the demosaic algorithm had changed in order to create slightly sharper looking images. At that point, I already felt that a slight step backward had been taken (with respect to generating the most "natural" looking digital images), however with judicious adjustment of my post-sharpening technique, I was able to accommodate that change in my workflow and I think many others did not even notice it. This new version of ACR, however, has gone too far IMO...
Since I have recently dedicated myself to using Adobe Lightroom, I am also quite concerned that the next version will have this same new raw rendering engine. After recommending LR to many other professional photographers, I am now worried at this development since with a new version of LR, there will probably not be any way to downgrade the raw engine as one can with the plugin architecture of Photoshop.
I may not have time to check this forum on a regular basis, so if anyone from Adobe would like further clarification regarding my opinion on this matter, please feel free to email me directly. An email link can be found on my personal website:

or just email "mander" at the above domain.
Thanks for letting me rant on about this!

  • How do i transfer a compilation photo file from iPhoto consisting of canon(img) and lumix(p..) in the order i compiled them to a usb stick as at the moment it is putting all the lumix files after the canon files?

    I have a macbook pro 15 inch retina 16 gb 1600mhz 2.7intel i7 osx 10.8.5
I have just put together an iPhoto file of wedding photos consisting of a compilation of images from my canon(img files) and lumix(p..files) I want to know how to transfer them to a usb stick in the order i compiled them as at the moment it is putting all the lumix files after the canon files which is not how i want to present them to the newlyweds?

Files are ordered by the file-viewer being used.  What viewer are you using, and what data field are you sorting by?
In Finder, as in most applications, you can select the data field to sort by clicking a column header.  Clicking the selected header will reverse the sort.
This is the Aperture forum, but what applies to Aperture is likely also true for iPhoto:  if you want to be able to sort your files in a specific order in a file-viewer, you should give them names that allow for sorting in that order when the name field is selected as the data field to sort by.  In Aperture, one creates new files by exporting, and one uses a File Naming Preset to name the files.  The File Naming Preset can start with an ordinal count or a sequence number.  Either of which will allow you to retain your order when viewing your files in a file viewer.

  • PSD files sent over FTP given 1kb file size, archived, and have .bin appended to extension

I'm trying to deliver PSD files to someone over our server's FTP. If the FTP shared folder is accessed via a browser (like safari which is the main thing I've been testing on), the files in are listed as being only 1kb in size when each is approximately 60MB and all have had .bin appended to the .psd file extension. When the file is downloaded it's still 1kb and when opened it is associated with the archive utility which attempts to unarchive it and produces and identically named and extensioned file of 4kb size which cannot be opened by preview or text edit or photoshop.
Changing the extension does not help as suggested here http://forums.appleinsider.com/archive/index.php/t-25119.html . Also if the file is downloaded via 3rd party FTP software like cyber duck, though the file size is listed as 1kb, the correct size file is downloaded though still has the .bin extension. When this full sized .bin file is opened, archive utility instead of unarchiving attempts to archive it and produces a file roughly half the size which too cannot be opened. Speaking with apple care resulted in the suggestion that I use terminal command line to force the client to use binary mode when downloading the file which also downloads a file of correct size but with the .bin extension and that can not be opened.
Is this a known issue with PSD files? I've not come accross this before, the server is configured correctly and different file types are successfully downloading with no changes to size or extension and then opening as they should upon receipt at the client side.

    Hi and thanks,
that was my next port of call but I stumbled across a more permanent fix. Mac OSX server automatically converts files sent over FTP to something called MacBinary on the fly and it seems this process doesn't agree with PSD files. Someone else encountered this problem back in 2003 and found this solution
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/archive/index.php/t-25119.html
speaking to apple care they also sent a link for the official mac instructions for achieving the same thing here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20996
    and here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20645?viewlocale=en_US
in the second explanation it's important to note for anyone attempting to follow this that if you're fixing the problem on MacOsX server rather than just MacOSX it isn't necessary to enable the root account as it is automatically enabled by default. Simply log out and log back in as root and use the same password as the first administrator account you set up when the server was first configured.

  • When saving a bmp file on the iphone, is the file being manipulated ?

Hi, i've searched the forum, the net and documentation and couldn't find the answer-
When i save a bmp file to my iphone photos library, for example, when downloading it from a web or from an email, is the BMP file being manipulated to another form when it is saved on the iphone file system ?
my application deals with BMP files (among others). in my application flow, a user will choose a BMP image from the photo library (an image he previously put there as described before) and the application will need to use this image's BMP data AND i MUST be sure that the BMP file data did not change at all since the time it was stored in the photo library until my application retrieved it.
    would really appreciate an answer,
    thanks a lot.

    Hi,
    Thanks,
The reason i work with BMP is that part of my app algorithm is an old and working C code which does what i need over a BMP file. Implementing that code in objective-c might be too much of an overhead for me.
You're right about the test. i'll do it ASAP.
Does anybody know if there's a simple way or what is the most simple way to write a PNG file to my Documents directory (app sandbox) as a BMP ? and i mean a real BMP image file.. a one i can actually open with some preview application.
assuming that a user chose a PNG image from the photo library (i'm using UIImagePickerControl), i recieve the image as UIImage* (to the userFinishedPickingImageithInfo ) in my app and i would like to write the selected image as a pure BMP file to my Documents dir.
    thanks !

    Hi iednolb
Like the original poster,T, I am having very similar problems, so have been following your advice with interest, but no success.
My details as follows :  Vista, 32bit, IE 8  My only AV is Kaspersky using their firewall not Windows,
Flash was working fine, then some malware was discovered and  subsequently deleted since then Flash has not worked in You Tube for example.
Like T said in his original post the exact applies regards the Shockwave Flash Object not being listed in my Internet add ons.
My files listed under Flash differ though :
    Flash101ocx
    FlashInstall
    FlashUti101_ActiveX.dll
FlashUti101_ActiveX      (note no .dll )   I assume the uninstaller and no install mentioned
As I said I have tried most of the suggestions to the letter made here and on other forums but no joy.
Appreciate any further advice, especially on the missing install entry and the add ons section.
    Thanks.

What on earth is happening? I am on PS CS6. I might point out everything was working normally up to  yesterday, when this first started.
I recently changed computer to 64bit from 32bit, not sure if this causing  the problem or not. Any help would be appreciated.

    Robert,

  • Problems with File Transfers Over Firewire 800

Problems with File Transfers Over Firewire 800.
Over the past month, I have had problems when transfering files from my harddrive, over Firewire 800 to a portable drive. I usually transfer very large files (20gb or more) to the portable drives for moving files around. When I drag a file over to copy onto a drive, the transfer starts normally. If I drag more files to copy over, the computer screen goes darker and a large icon comes up that looks like a power button icon. It tells me to restart, so I have to do a hard shut down on my G5. Weird. I also get the dark screen of death sometimes when I am transfering those large files and open another application to do some work while it's copying. It's killing me. I am having to sit here and wait for the transfer to finish before I can do anything.
    Any thoughts...

  • Existing files on drive connected to latest Airport Extreme do not show up, however files copied over the air to the drive do. Any ideas?

I have the latest Airport Extreme with a Seagate drive connected. I copied files to the drive while it was connected to my MacBook Pro. The files do not show up when connected to the AE, but they appear when connected to the Macbook, Files copied over the network to the drive appear. The drive is formatted HFS+.

After playing with this for the last few days, I found a solution. Under the "Disks" tab in Airport Utility, the "Secure Shared Disks" drop down needs to be set to "With device password". Mine was set to "With acounts", which even after correct authentication, none of the files would appear.
Another interesting note:  The files that I could see, the ones I copied over the network, do not appear now. I can copy over new files, and they show up, but the ones copied prior to changing the "Secure Shared Disks" option, do not.

  • How do I create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user

This is why I think I need to.
My computer got hit by lightening, and I may have created a new user account through netinfo rather than system preferences /accounts/+user. Mail used to open twice, but no longer. Now, Safari askes me for my keychain password twice, Spotlight can't find a folder on the computer when the search is restricted to folder and computer, though the folder is there and easyfind finds it, and when System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy has the hard drive icon added, then deleted, Spotlight still does not find anything. (Yes, everything is backed up, on CD, DVD, and online.) Microsoft Tec Support says
"Here is a summary of the key points of the case for your records.
When you contacted us on August 8, you had requested assistance with Microsoft Office 2004, as your installation of the updates was unable to find the correct version of the software to update. After creating a New MAC User, we identified the issue to be with a corrupt MAC User account, and not a Microsoft issue. "
I believe Microsoft. So, creating a new user was easy.
But copying files uses up too much hard drive (movies, music), and may miss keychains, preferences, mail, address book, and documents. Since Spotlight no longer works, who knows what is happening. (Yes, I've repaired persmissions, and disk repair. No change). I'm using up my hard drive trying to move files to the new user. If I share files, or put them into a public folder, then delete the old user, will I still have the old user's files in the new user's account? It is not clear to me what I should be trying to do in order to create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user. Thanks.
My responses will be slow, because I have to drive to town to use the internet. I've ordered a new airport which may take care of that problem. SO be patient.

    Hey -
I need to do the EXACT same thing, but have no idea how. Has anyone out there done this?
My situation is a tad different..this is a new Mac (and I'm a brand new Mac user). Tons of querks occur under my original account (videos won't run, Safari won't support certain plug-ins). I spent 6 hours on the phone w/ 4 different Apple Reps and nobody could fix it. A rep finally looked at my MacBook Pro in person today. He created a new account just to see if that would work and under that new account, everything works perfectly fine (no querks, can view video). He tried switching a million settings in my original account to no avail.
He said to create a new account (as he did) and move my files over to the new account and then go back to the original and delete it. How do you do this?! I can't figure it out! I've got a new account created, but of course it just has the default folders in it w/ the little red icons next to them! Thanks in advance!

  • I have downloaded the two files needed for the upgrade of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 to version 12 but I cannot open them to make them run and install. What am I supposed to do. One is a very large .7z file just over 1gb in size.

How do I open  up a .7z file just over 1gb in size? I have just downloaded this as an upgrade from Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 to version 12. I cannot see any sign of the Akamai program on my computer that is supposed to open and install the two files that I downloaded.

    Thanks Hans
I don’t mind mountain climbing but anything serious to do with a computer scares me silly.
I installed the 64 bit version of 7zip and once I figured out how to tell the computer to use the right application within that to open the 7zip file, the big file opened and I was able to apply the .exe file to get things going and installed. In the end the default location the installation chose was program files x86 which I think is the 32 bit folder but it all seems to be ok now.
Many thanks again for your response.
    Cheers

  • When upgrading to OSX Yosemite do all my programs and files transfer over such as Office for mac, saved documents from word, excel, pics, pdf files,etc.etc...

Will all my files transfer over (or stay) automatically right after upgrading to Yosemite or do I have to backup every single desired program or document? Question is do I HAVE to please if you can answer if its mandatory or not. Not looking for recommendations that I SHOULD back up or anything like that just want to know if it is mandatory to perform a backup to be able to keep or transfer all my current programs and apps and documents currently on my MB Pro Retina.

Yes, upgrading to Yosemite will not touch your 3rd party apps or files in the Home folder.
Although not mandatory you should have a a backup of your hard drive regardless if you upgrade to Yosemite or not.  To not have a backup is just playing  Russian roulette as there are only two types of hard drives;  those that have failed and those that will.

  • IPhoto asked to upgrade library and has now come up empty even though my iPhoto file is over 130GB.  How do I get back my photos?

iPhoto asked to upgrade library and has now come up empty even though my iPhoto file is over 130GB.  How do I get back my photos?   I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 with Mavericks.   My iPhoto is 9.6.   I am very concerned as this file has all my photos for the last 15 years!

If the iPhoto Library is still 130 GB large, your photos are probably still inside; perhaps the library has a corruption.
Or the iPhoto Library is on drive, that is incompatible with iPhoto. Where is your iPhoto Library stored?
To check for a library corruption:  Ctrl-click or right-click the iPhoto library and select "Show Package Contents". This will show the folders inside the library package.
Are there folders called "Masters" or "Old Masters"?
If there is a folder "Old Masters", you are having a problem with recent bug, that corrupts iPhoto Libraries when upgrading. In that case, it would be best to restore your iPhoto Library from a backup you made before you upgraded to Yosemite.
Or, if no backup is available, copy the "old Masters" folder to a folder on your Desktop and create a new iPhoto library and import the Old Masters folder.
If there is no folder "old Masters" try to rebuild your iPhoto Library with the First Aid tools :
Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library, but don't overwrite any older backups.
To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
    Select  "Rebuild Database".

Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 workstations, the appdata folder is redirected to a network share at \\server\profiles and several users are unable to use bookmarks getting an error about the file being in use. Though I don't understand why it would be for some users and not others. I can't be the first one and I'm not coming up with anything searching google endlessly. Anybody else run into this?

hello, yes this is likely caused by an external program locking access to the bookmarks/history database. you could try renaming the file in question & see if it is working when it is regenerated, this will clear bookmarks and the history though, so keep a backup...
