Acrobat 7.1.4 Standard flattens .ai file when adding a page

I save an Illustrator CS4 file as a .pdf.
I open it in Acrobat 7.1.4 Standard, and add a cover sheet.
If I reopen the file in Illustrator the file has lost its layers.
This does not happen if I don't add a 2nd page in Acrobat.
Is there some setting in Acrobat that will prevent this flattening?

Another thing to consider when using Acrobat 7.x is that Adobe has announced Acrobat 7.x support ends December 2010.

  • Adobe Acrobat Standard 9.x crashes when adding large format jpegs

I am using Adobe Acrobat Standard 9.x and when I attempt to add a large scale jpg to a pdf, the program crashes.  Is there a limit to the photo size dimensions?  My smaller format photos (8.5 x 11) add just fine to the pdf, but when I attempt to add my larger (35" x 50") photos, the program crashes.

I recently ran into this with a bitmap in a 265 page document. I copied the bitmap to IrfanView and then back (I think that was the step -- I am already forgetting) and the copied it back. The problem went away. My student may look a bit more at the file -- I asked so I could give a more definitive comment here.
The result I had suggests that it is a problem in WORD or the bitmap that WORD was using. Why WORD can deal with it and not Acrobat, I am not sure. However, when printing to the Adobe PDF printer there was not a problem, just with PDF Maker.

  • Viewing mov files when adding to layers

Hi, im having some trouble viewing my .mov files after adding them to my layers. I know the mov file is viewable because they are videos from Ready2go, and i can preview them on quicktime.
I import my files to my composition, then select the mov file i want to add to my layers, the layer is created but no video is viewable other than a small square box that contains the video. Its only using one frame for the entire video. Its supposed to creat a layer with as many frames as the videos length.
Anyone know how to fix that? im pretty sure is some property that im not enabeling or something, because it doesnt reject my mov files.

    From the Digital Jouice website:
Proxies included for faster RAM previews
Requires Juicer version 3.81 or above.
To me this means you are using the proxies and they are in some odd protected CoDec. You will first need to run their Juicer app to extract their protected content to proper work files.

  • Forms not appearing in Response file when added and no preview

One of my users has a form created with Adobe LiveCycle ES 8.2 and has been using it happily for the last 12 months up until about a month ago. The problem is when she receives the responses via email and double clicks on the attached PDF, it says it has been added to the response file and the total responses count goes up by one but you cannot see the response in the list.
She also says that other times the total count goes down when a response is added and again you cannot see the reponse in the list. A further problem is that when you Dbl-click a response in the list, you don't get a preview of the form you just get a blank window. I at first thought this may be a corruption but we did a restore of the file from a month before this started happening and we get the same result with that file.
I tried opening this file on another PC which had Acrobat 9.0 Pro but I get the same result. There are no filters applied and I have played with every view setting I could find to no avail. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I apologise if my comments sounded too harsh.  I work for a lot of corporations and quasi government departments.  I have to work with "web teams" all the time and they're a very mixed bag.  Some are up with the technology and can actually be creative.  Others consist of people that were just plain unemployable but the company couldn't let them go without incurring union wrath, so they dump them in the "web team".
If Accessibility is what they want, Captivate has very strong features in this area.  Certainly better than any other e-learning tool I've seen.  You turn these on by selecting the Accessibility checkbox under Preferences.
If you don't like my idea of using Rollover Captions for ALT text, you can simply add accessibility text to any image on screen by selecting the image and clicking the Accessibility button.
Then in the dialog that pops up, you just untick the checkbox for automatic text (based on the name of the object) and add in your own like this:
You need to remember that with 508 compliance there are a number of levels.  You need to determine which level your organisation is aiming for and keep it practical or else you will end up with a lot of extra unnecessary expense and time wasting.  Lower levels of accessibility are very achievable.  As you move further up the levels it becomes increasingly impossible to deliver anything that isn't plain text.  In some cases, accessibility taken to the max would require you to build several different versions of your courseware.
If you Web Team expects you to go to the n.th degree in Accessibility, ask them to confirm exactly who's going to pay for it.

  • Lost a file when added to itunes !!!

I added a file (containing MP3's) on my itunes librairy and deleted it by mistake from Itunes. I found out that it deleted it from my computer too. I've tried to find it with RecoverMyFiles but it doesn't work. Is there a way to find it back ??? Thank you !!!

I had the same thing happen to me this morning. I had selected several folders to be copied to a cd, it looked like they were copying, but the machine wasn't making the normal sound it makes when it is burning to a cd. Then I noticed after it was done that nothing got burned to the cd, and in addition, all the folders were gone from "my documents."
The only way I could find the files again was to use the search function, but when I tried to open them, I would get an error message saying file could not be found. Even though when I clicked file properties it said it should still be in the same location.
I don't have a Lenovo computer, but an eMachines with Windows Vista. I posted here in case anyone in this forum has any idea how to fix this problem. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

  • Has anyone experienced Apple Mail flattening .PSD file attachment when sending?

One of my students encountered the case when Apple Mail flattens .PSD file when sending an attachment.
Running latest Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C540) Mail Version 4.2 (1077). Multi layered .PSD file 120K was saved on desktop and than attached to email. None of the Adobe applications were running at that time. After it was sent, the attached file in Send mail folder was flattened and it size dropped to 88K.
The flattened file was sent to destination. Although we could not reproduce this problem on the other computers, it always happens on this particular machine.
When the problem was reported to Apple, the answer from engineers was more disturbing than the problem itself.
They said "... it is OK to flatten the file to reduce the size of attachment when sending. It is expected email behavior". I am very troubled by this attitude from Apple. Flattening the image discards information contained in individual layers. This is actually EDITING the contents of an attachment when sending it.
Has anyone experience this problem? Also, I would appreciate feedback on Apple's position that it is OK to edit attachments when sending them withou asking the user first.

    Marian,
I'm afraid you have missed the point. People send binary files via email all the time: images, video and music clips - in fact any attachment is a binary file. Underlying protocols are implementation details, a mail client may choose any form of encoding/encryption to send an attachment. However, the internet standard requires that an attached file is delivered exactly as it was sent, mail clients/servers are not allowed to take upon themselves to "optimize" attachments without the end user knowledge and permission. It creates a dangerous precedent. In this particular case my photography student had no way of knowing that for whatever reason his particular setup would flatten the image and ruin his homework.
Also, none of the protocols: FTP, SMTP or HTTP is inherently binary or MIME encoded, it depends on the settings and implementation ( Check RFC's)
I am not asking for a work around, which is trivial. I am simply trying find how serious is the problem. This is not a normal behavior, I know for certain only about two cases when it happens. With such a rare occurrence it seem to be a bug rather than a feature. That is why Apple reaction to is so surprising.

  • How can I export a smallformat flatten PDF-file with transparant parts in?

My post on a PDF - more clear with images (english):
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf
    Deze post in nederlandstalige versie:
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-nl.pdf
    Scope?
I'dd like to export an Indesign-file (.indd) to a PDF-file that has to be:
    - the smallest possible file size
    - which displays images and text sharp on the screen
    - which also certainly remain transparent parts of .psd-files after exporting
    - that is flattened for easy print
    The problem?
    ▪ How and with which of settings can I export such a file from InDesign 5.0?
    ▪ If necessary in combination with some settings (after exporting) in our Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
    Further explanation
The export file contains lots of text, graphics, photographs and drawings. Many of these items are .psd-files that contain transparent areas. The intention is that this transparent parts actually remain transparent even after exporting/flattening /decreasing the PDF.
    ▪ With InDesign 5.0?
→ In the window Export Adobe PDF: (images see: http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf )
Should I start from a default PDF preset   (if yes > which one??)
    Possibilities are: High Quality Print / PDFX-1a: 2001 / PDFX-3:2002 / PDFX-4:2007 / Press Quality / Smallest File Size
Or is it better to create a PDF preset on my own?     (if yes > which settings??)
    Standard > PDF/X-format?
    Compatibility > PDF-version?
Compression > If artwork should be compressed and downsampled, and if so,
which method and settings to I have to use ?
Ouput > How can I control colors and PDF/X output intent profiles in the PDF-file?
Advanced > How can I control fonts, OPI specifications, transparency flattening, and JDF instructions are
                      in the PDF file?
    ▪ With Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
→ How can I reduce the file size extra, so more reducing after exporting into PDF ?
→ How can I flatten the exported file (if not done during the export) ?
!! Important, when I export/reduce/flatten the file, I ‘dd like that the parts of images who were transparent before, stays also transparent after !!
    WHAT CAN I DO ??

    Hello,
I'm sorry you're having trouble. Unfortunately, this forum is for the ExportPDF service of Acrobat.com. The ExportPDF service functions as a PDF to *.docx file convertion and we can't help with problems specific to the desktop version of Acrobat or InDesign.  I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

  • Adobe Acrobat 6.0 CE Standard edited forms do not display fields

I have a user who has Adobe Acrobat 6.0 CE Standard, she uses it to fill out an editable form created with Adobe and send it to clients. When this form is saved and attached to an e-mail, anyone who recieves it and opens it in Reader 9.0 the fields that were edited do not display. However, If It is sent through the "Send by e-mail for review" option under the "File" menu option in the Adobe Acrobat 6.0 CE. It arrives and opens up with the input data in the fields.
Can anyone tell me what the difference is and why It cannopt be opened in Reader if just sent as an attachment in Outlook?

    Lolanda,
Do you know if your users that cannot use the forms have access to the ADSCerts view in the Key Storage service?  Check out slide 26 in the below link:

  • Acrobat 8.1.3 standard crashes when opened

    Hi guys,
I have Acrobat 8.1.3 standard on my laptop and whenever i open a pdf file, it opens up and just crashes in few seconds. Tried installing security patches but in vain. pls cud u suggest a solution.
i am currently using an alternate solution by installing acrobat reader 9.
    thanks,

There could be many reasons it could crash. You could try to run the licensing repair tool.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/licensing.html
You could try to look for disk directory problems.
If all the above fail, I'd look for a damaged font.

  • Acrobat v9 Pro and Standard Runtime Error!

My company recently got in the CD's from Adobe for Acrobat 9 Professional and Acrobat 9 Standard.
I installed Acrobat 9 Pro on one of our systems. The system got a runtime error every time Adobe Acrobat started citing "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
Initially, I thought it was an issue with that system. So, I installed Acrobat Standard on two other systems. Both units get the same error.
Of the 3 units 2 are identical IBM workstations with some different software installed. 1 is an HP system. The OS is a fairly clean Windows XP SP2 otherwise very stable installation.
I searched Adobe forums and here but haven't come across much version 9 questions/comments.
Initially, I was going to fully uninstall Acrobat and try the installation again. However, now that 2 other systems are getting the same error, I feel it would be a waste of time.
Any ideas on what to look for to resolve this issue?
Previous version was the latest v8 which 9 uninstalled.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Dean
EDIT: I did come across this for version 8 and tried the same fix with 9, but to no effect:
    ================================================================================
C++ Runtime error after launching Acrobat or Adobe Reader 8 on Windows
    Issue
When you launch Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard, Professional, or Adobe Reader 8 on Windows, an error occurs:
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
    Solution
    Disable the Updater.api plug-in.
Navigate to where Acrobat or Adobe Reader is installed, usually
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\plug_ins
    or C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\plug_ins
    Rename the Updater.api plug-in to Updater.api.old
    Relaunch Acrobat or Reader.

So here is the flaw... Since i dont see many people saying WHAT the flaw is.
==== THIS IS WITH ROAMING PROFILE CRASHES! ====
Adobe's program iterates the network path from left to right, skipping the first word: \\Server\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\APPLICATION DATA as it searches a user's profile for the APPLICATION DATA folder.
So starting at FOLDER1 it checks to see if it can "create" a folder. It doesnt do it, but it tries to check its access. If your not in the users profile at this point, the program MOST LIKELY cannot because its a directory NOT owned by the user. THe previous folders is something you wouldn't give NORMAL users access to.
After the program FAILS to "create" its folder because it cannot -
    The program Crashes:
*R6025 - Pure Virtual function call
    * The exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at location 0x2e80f5e3
    * C++ runtime error
    * WINDOWS NAME Collision error.
=== ITS ALL OF THESE! Same error, different points in the crashing ===
    Solution?
I create a network drive DIRECTLY to the profile, then I update the registery to make that the WINDOWS APPDATA path. ALL of this is done on the user logon scripts. So it was just "solved" one day, except for a new drive letter appearing.
    (Added to login script)
    net use l: \\SERVER\USER PROFILE TREE\USER PROFILE
    REG ADD "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v AppData /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "l:\Application Data" /f
For our work we use: \\SERVER\USER PROFILE TREE\%USERNAME%\%COMPUTERNAME% - so each user has SEPERATE data per computer they are on.
ADOBE - PLEASE update your code so it doesnt iterate like this! If it does RESUME on error, to see if its recoverable before the END of the interation. These are simple mistakes...
THIS will also fix the SIMILAR / SAME(?) BUG in ROXIO products.

  • My boss wants to buy Adobe Acrobat X (or XI) standard package. What features does it have?

    Hello All,
My boss has asked me to do some research into the Adobe Acrobat X (or XI) standard version. Can you please help me on the following issues:
If we are to purchase the Adobe Acrobat X (or XI) standard version, will I be able to edit PDF documents?
Will I be able to combine numerous PDF documents into one file?
Will we be able to install the program on more than one computer?
Will we be able to password protect the PDF files?
    Thank you for your help.

You can't buy Acrobat X any more, not from Adobe at least.
You'll find a general comparison of the different versions here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/product-comparison.html
The answer to all of your questions is yes, with the partial exception of the one about installing it on multiple computers. The EULA allows you to activate the application on two computers, as long as its not used on both at the same time. This is the same for Standard and for Pro, though.

  • Acrobat 5.05 Distiller not Producing .pdf Files

When I first purchased Acrobat 5.05 and installed it, to produce a .pdf file from an application, I printed the file from the application choosing Acrobat Distiller as the printer.  This prompted for a file name and location.  When the OK button was clicked, Acrobat 5.05 launched, and the .pdf file appeared, and was able to be saved.  No other steps were needed.
Now when I attempt to do this, the application indicates that it is printing, but Acrobat 5.05 does not launch, and no .pdf file is produced in any folder.
Re installing Acrobat 5.05 does not correct the problem.
What needs to be done, to make this version of acrobat distiller operate as it originally operated?

Normally it is only needed if you are requesting a PS file that may be sent to someone else and they do not have the fonts OR if you are printing another PDF that had embedded fonts that you do not have one your system. Otherwise, Acrobat will go to find the fonts on your system as per the distiller font list.
The print to file is the most fundamental PDF creation process in AA 5. All of the other options build on it. The repeating the process, but unchecking the print-to-file button. In that case a PS file will be created by the print driver (directed to the Adobe PDF port or such -- I would have to go to my other machine to check the name for sure, but should be obvious unless it is missing) and then AcroTray is supposed to recognize that the file exists and then run distiller in the background. PDF Maker is just a front end processor for the Acrobat Distiller printer. Note that the name has since been changed since folks got the print driver confused with the program Distiller. They did the same change in name to Reader since folks keep thinking they had Acrobat when they only had the Reader. (At least that is my take on their reasons that I have not really seen.)
AcroTray is found in the Distiller folder. It should be in the startup folder of Win XP, listed as Acrobat Assistant. If you look at the running processes with ctrl-alt-del, it should be listed (just click on the program columns to get an alphabetic list). If it is not running, then start it. If it is running and you are having problems, then try ending it and then restarting it from the Distiller folder (just double click on the program).
Also, be aware that unless you change a preference in Distiller, the settings you pick in the Acrobat Distiller printer properties will over ride those of Distiller for the most part. And any changes you make in the printer properties from within a program will over ride the default printer properties, but will not be carried over to the next use of the program -- the defaults will again be loaded. So if you want a particular default setting, use the Start>Printers>Acrobat Distiller (right click for properties) to set the default properties. I never use the standard job settings for instance, but always use something like the press or print settings that embed all fonts. I reality I use a job settings created by a publisher.
So all I am trying to step you through are the basic trouble shooting steps that are necessary to get your system working. Finding where the problem is becomes the first step. We now know that you can print-to-file and produce a PDF with Distiller. Actually, I loaded AA5 on a Win7 Starter system and was able to create PDFs using this process. The AcroTray from AA5 does not work in Win7. Actually, for Win7, I just tried it by changing the port to File and so I don't even have to check the print-to-file button. That was really more of a test to see what broke, and I was surprised that it even installed on the 32-bit netbook. My guess is it may not work at all on a 64-bit system. However, on XP, your AA5 should work fine once we trace down the culprit.
