Acrobat PDF Printer Hangs in Windows 8

I am running Windows 8 Enterprise RTM  64-bit on an Intel i7-3770 3rd gen CPU, Z77 chipset. I've found that most PDF printers I have been using on Windows 7 now hang on 8, including the Acrobat X printer (latest version). I have found one free alternative that works fine, but would like to get back to using the Acrobat printer. Will Adobe be releasing an update that addresses the hang?
Above is a screenshot afterr more than ten minutes:

Hello All
I have been struggling with this same problem of Printing to Acrobat PDF driver freezing up not only the print spooler, but also the software I was printing from, on Windows 7 64Bit, using both acrobat 9.4 and Acrobat X with the same freeze, stall lockup result.
I think this is the same problem you are having.
I found many questions about this online but no useful answers, and alot of fingerpointing trying to blame different programs and combinations of software.
The 1 solution, which created a PDF and did not freeze, was to switch of the choice of a saving location in the PDf driver and setting a fixed PDF save location instead of the ASK for location option.
This worked but was a real pain having to move and rename the file each time.
This got me thinking that there was actually nothing wrong with the PDF driver.
The problem seemed to be the user input to save the file to a certain location.
I then experimented and found that if I was fast enough with a file name, that the save to location option did not freeze up when creating the PDF.
By repeatedly trying to print and looking at the print dialog box I noticed that after a count of 5 seconds the Acrobat PDF print driver progress box greyed slightly (Asif loosing focus) and after that happened there was no hope of a successful PDF.
The 5second timer got me thinking about a windows timeout, rather than a PDF option.
PDF Print Freeze Problem Solution:
Windows 7 64 bit (And I assume Windows 8 too) has a default program timeout of 5 seconds after which Windows considers a program to be NOT RESPONDING.
The time during which the PDF printer is waiting for a response from you for a save location, is seen as inactive by Windows and Windows decides that the Print driver has stalled.
Something then changes anough to effect the driver, and once the PDF print driver is allowed to carry on and save the PDF it can't anymore and stalls.
Solution is to edit the HungAppTimout in the Windows Registry, and set it to something like 20000 to 30000 = 20 to 30 seconds.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc978614.aspx (Info regarding the Registry Key)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\HungAppTimeout
This then give you 20-30 seconds to select a save location for your PDF.
In my case (Windows 7 64bit) the Registry entry was missing.
I had to create it from scratch and reboot.
If ENTRY IS MISSING:
Goto the folder in the registry
Right Click  - NEW - STRING VALUE
Name it exactly as above including CAPS: HungAppTimeout
Set the value to 20000 (For 20 seconds or more if you need it)
Reboot Windows.
After that Printing to PDf with Acrobat works 100%.
Note this option also helped on my Windows XP PC.
I hope this prevents others from struggling as much as I did to fogure this out.
Regards

  • Firefox 28 hangs when I try to print to Acrobat PDF printer

    Hello all!
I have observed a problem when I try to print a webpage in Firefox v28 using the Acrobat PDF Printer (Acrobat Pro 9.5.5) installed in a Virtual Machine (VMware View 5.2) with Windows 7 64 bits. The printing dialog hangs (no response) after the "Save as" pdf dialog. Then I have to force Firefox to close, and afterward a Acrobat PDF conversion dialogs appears with the progress bar stopped at the middle. I also have to close this afterwards.
The others programs (Office, IE, Notepad...) are able to print through the PDF printer without problems. The problem appeared after the automatic update to Firefox v28, since when I downgrade to Firefox v26 the problem disappears.
I checked a similar configuration in a physical computer (W7 64 bits, Acrobat Pro 9.5.5, Firefox v28), and everything runs good, so I think it is a change that happened in Firefox v28 that has some problem with the VM configuration. I also have tried to change the Firefox profile, reset Firefox and reset the printing settings and reinstall Acrobat. No luck.
I would like to know if somebody know some change in Firefox v28 related with the printing or related to some service or update that can have some problem in the virtual machine.
    Any help is welcome!
    Thanks!

When you updated, did you reset the printer settings in '''about:config''' under '''print.print_printer'''?

  • Reader 9 Acrobat PDF Printer Driver Continuously Installs

Since I have installed Reader 9, the Acrobat PDF Printer Driver Continuously Installs in the background degrading system performance. Does anyone else have this problem? It auto created a System Restore point, so check that. I am running XP with all patches applies.

    Hi Mike,
I have exactly the same problem that you describe. At first I thought it might be malicious software that was installing a fake driver, but after running Malware, Spybot and some other programs, I'm still left with the problem. I have a lot of Adobe software installed (Adobe Premiere Elements 7, Adobe Acrobat Pro 8, Adobe Audition 3, Adobe PhotoShop 7 and of course Adobe Reader 9, plus as you indicate Adobe Air and Acrobat.com I'm not sure when my problem started, since I only recognized it when I went to do a system restore. It appears to install the driver about once a minute. This leaves me with about 3 days worth of useless restore points.
The only advice that I have received is to un-install all my Adobe stuff, then check the System Restore, then one by one re-install the packages checking each time what happens in the system restore.
Have you found any solution since your original post?

  • Acrobat 8 - Adobe PDF Printer hanging when printing

    Hi
I have an installation of Adobe CS3 Design Standard on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. When attempting to use the 'Adobe PDF' printer from an Adobe application, i.e. Illustrator, Photoshop, the application freezes and the PDF printer does not proceed to convert the document. The job is in the print spooler, however this either sits there with 'error', or 'spooling'.
This behaviour does not occur when using another application such as Microsoft Word.
When looking at the printer preferences of the printer, the tab appears to be malformed and incomplete.  (see screenshot)
There are no options under the 'Adobe PDF Folder' dropdown, apart from LPT1.
I have tried reinstalling Acrobat from the CS3 DVD, after deleting the printer and driver, however this does not appear to solve the problem.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
    Thanks, Luke.

Thanks for this, it solved the problem!
It appears that despite the updater saying there weren't any updates, there clearly were. I'm guessing they've turned off the update servers as it's such an old product.
For the record, I installed 8.1 and 8.1.1 all the way to 8.1.7 individually.
    Thanks again.
    Luke.

  • After Acrobat 9.4.3 update, Adobe PDF printer hangs

I just updated to Adobe 9.4.3 and tried to print to the PDF printer. The process hangs with about 4 bars on the progress bar. Nothing prints and the original document is also locked up. I've had to close Firefox using Task Manager. MS Office documents provide a program recovery box allowing me to End Now. What on earth is going on now?

I repaired the installation and that seems to have fixed the problem. Thank goodness.

  • Acrobat PDF Printer STILL freezes when pasting filename into Save dialog

Ref: Acrobat Printer Freezes on Save when CTL+V is used
No change in Acrobat X.  Printing system still freezes up entirely when pasting a filename into the Save dialog, when printing to Adobe PDF printer.  Most often from Firefix (all versions through 28.0) but from other programs as well (also happens from MS Outlook 2010 32 bit).
Any chance of an update from Adobe?
Acrobat Pro X on Win 7 64 bit.  Multiple systems exhibit same behavior.
Same issue occurs in Acrobat XI Standard.
Workaround is possible by manually typing in filename, or renaming, but clearly this should not be happening.  If you forget, it requires a lot of steps (or a reboot) to try again.

If you copy text directly from FireFox (or Word, or pretty much any program, other than Notepad), and try to paste into the Save Dialog to save your PDF, guaranteed crash.
HOWEVER, if you paste the text into Notepad first, and then copy it again, you can then paste into the Save dialog no problem.  This is why the "test" that the Adobe rep did to recreate the problem was pointless: He managed to re-create the one workaround method that DOES work, instead of actually trying to do things the way that were causing the issue to show up.
The problem appears to be related to any sort of "rich" text.  Windows ignores the "rich" information and only keeps the text if you paste into a filename in the system.  So Windows handles it just fine, it's Adobe's save dialog that can't handle it.  Copied text from Firefox is usually pretty clean (IE is worse), but there must be some formatting remnants in there that are giving Adobe fits (instead of properly ignoring them).  It may have something to do with 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Firefox and 64-bit Acrobat all coming together?  Copying and pasting between 64-bit and 32-bit programs usually has no issues, but in this case, it does (although the 64/32 bit relation is pure speculation on my end).
But by "washing" your text through Notepad first, it completely strips it down to truly pure plain text, which can then be pasted into Adobe's Save dialog without a crash.  This adds an extra step, and should be entirely unnecessary, but it does work.  At least until Adobe fixes their program.

  • Acrobat PDF Printer don´t work

When I choose File->Print->"Adobe PDF Printer" from any application (i.E. "Ai") I get following two windows. The first Window will disappear with 100%, but the second don´t and no file will be created?!!??!??!?
My system: Win7 64 and Adobe CC (Acrobat XI Pro)
Can anyone help me to fix this, please?
Used CS5 a few days before and it does the job.

You will need to manually create using the link tool or if you're lucky
(and the destination URL is spelt out in the text) use Advanced /
Document Processing / Create from URLs option.
The PDF Maker on the Mac does not work the same as Windows ...

  • Silent PDF Printing 64 bit Windows - 32 bit Application

I have a windows 7 64 bit machine at work and am having issues getting the Adobe PDF printer to recognize the registry key for silent printing. I'm using Acrobat X. It works fine from a 64 bit application. I tested the 64 bit version of wordpad and it will pick the key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Distiller\PrinterJobControl) for it's application name and print automatically. If I use the 32 bit version it won't pick up what's in the registry for that application name. The main goal here is to be able to print to pdf from Access 03 (yeah I know). The code works on a 32 bit system. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Unable to print directly to PDF Printer Driver on Windows Vista

I'm having problems printing directly to my PDF printer drivers - neither "Adobe PDF" nor "Adobe PDF Converter" seems to work. The printer either gives me an error or when it asks me to save it to a folder, it seems to send the file into the atmosphere! I have Acrobat 8 Professional (Adobe CS3) on a Windows Vista Premium operating system. I tried downloading the Adobe distiller file "Winsteng.exe" but got an error when I tried to install it. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, as this is really frustrating! Thanks in advance.

What kind of file are you trying to print? Is this a recent issue or was it happening earlier as well? Repairing your Acrobat installation will definitely help you.
Also Can you share your screen shot of the following dailogs:
    1) Printers and Faxes
    2) Printing Preferences... (Go to Printers and Faxes->Right click on Adobe PDF Printer->Printing Preferences...)
    3) Advanced Options (Go to Printers and Faxes->Right click on Adobe PDF Printer->Printing Preferences...->Paper/Quality->Advanced...)
    4) Advanced Properties (Go to Printers and Faxes->Right click on Adobe PDF Printer->Properties->Advanced Tab)

  • WWI - pdf printing problems on Windows Vista

At the moment the workstations are being upgraded from Windows 2000 untill Windows Vista 32 bit (it's a big company....)
At the Vista machines there are problems with WWI and PDF printing. At the windows 2000 workstations there is no problem.

    Hello
please take a look in SAP marketplace. There are a number of important OSS available regarding"general" topics of WWI (recent version of WWI) and common questions. MOst of the OSS are of type "recommendation / additional info" etc.
It is known that not all combinations of Windows version together with WWI version together with SAP version together with Adobe version are suported or that problems can come up.
    Main issues are:
    - used Word version
    - Used Windows version
    etc.

  • No Acrobat PDF Printer

    Hi,
I have OS X 10.5, Adobe Creative Suite 3 with Acrobat Pro 9. I installed CS3, without the Acrobat option as per the advised setup instructions, restarted the Apple, then installed Acrobat Pro 9 and then rebooted. The PDF printer is not available when I try to print from any application on the Apple. It's as if the PDF printer itself hasn't been installed.
Can you advise on how to add the PDF printer in as the installtion procedure doesn't seem to work.
    Thanks
    Chris

Under the help menu there should be a choice to repair the installation
of Acrobat. This should restore the pdf printer.

  • Acrobat PDF Printing Press Issues....

I have a pdf with more than 150 pages in High Resolution, I want to convert it to pdf presss quality, so when I print this High Resolution pdf by going to pdf printer and setting its quality as a press quality, then its simply starts processing and at the end it's giving only lessthan 10-15 pages result.
Actually I want to convert one High Resolution pdf(150 pages) to good but low size pdf(press quality), So please tell me how to do this.
    Thanks.

When you start saying small size, you may have to compromise on something. The first thing is to find out why the file is large (not sure how large you consider large in this case). In the PDF Optimizer, there is an audit function to provide information on the memory use in the PDF. Also, the PDF Optimizer is a good way to reduce the file size and retain control of the quality (always work on a copy). When you print to a new PDF, you would lose all bookmarks and such -- that may be an issue. If you have a lot of graphics, you may not be able to reduce the file size without giving up some of the resolution that you seem to want.

  • PDF printing issues on Windows 7

I have a pc that is having issues printing pdfs. It is very slow.
Here is the steps along with the issues associated with each one.
    1. Clicking Print Icon on Tool bar. It freezes momentarily when this happens and states "Not Repsonding".
    2. The print dialog box comes up (but is very slow about doing this after the "Not Responding" issue.
    3. The status bar dialog box comes up. It freezes here for a moment.
    4. The image finally prints.
This is a new problem that recently happened.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the software.
This used to be a job that happened in seconds. It is now taking about a minute per pdf.
If you could please let me know if there is any way to fix this issue.
    Thank You.

  • Pdf printing problem on Windows

I make flyers and tech sheets for my company. I produce a document in Pages '09 and export to pdf and send file to my office via mail. .mac account. Office prints the pdf. and gets shaded boxes around masked images and alpha images. They only show up on colored backgrounds not white backgrounds. And, it doesn't matter if it's exported good, better, or best. Sometimes invisible text boxes show up as well. And, there are no outlines or fills on the text box.
    Any help would be appreciated.

This feature is clearly described by Apple since at least 2005/05/03
Apple's technical note does not say that Apple saves transparency into PDF 1.3 when transparency is supported only in PDF 1.4 and up, nor does Apple's technical note say that a PDF consumer according to the PDF Reference Manual has a mechanism that permits the functionality in PDF versions up to and including the version supported in the PDF consumer to be imaged while functionality in versions above the version in the PDF consumer is merely omitted.
Apple's note specifically does not say, "We save out PDF 1.3, and we should be saving out PDF 1.4. Your PDF consumer should be Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher that supports PDF 1.4 and higher." One can argue that treatment of transparency is not closely tied to PDF version number, and that e.g. Adobe does not implement as if treatment of transparency is closely tied to PDF version number, but whichever way one argues what Apple's technical note says is the following, and what Apple says does not provide the poor enduser with any way of working out what action to take:
"When you create a PDF file from an iWork application, please note that drop shadows within the PDF document may not display in all PDF readers.
"The drop shadows in Pages and Keynote are generated by a component of Mac OS X. When you view iWork-generated PDF files in Preview, you'll see these shadows. However, if you view the PDF with a third-party reader that doesn't use this component, the shadows will be missing."
