Acrobat XI ocr: access hidden layer?

Hi all,
I have historic documents (German and English) that I want to OCR so that the text is searchable *without* changing its appearance. I've tried with previous versions of Acrobat where it did not quite work and thought I give Acrobat XI (Windows 7) a try.
I use "searchable image" in the correct language ("Clearscan" and "exact" are not useful here). The ocr'ed text is in a hidden layer. Since an old-fashioned font is used, the ocr result is expectedly faulty. So I need to correct those results which is where the problems arise. The little sub-menu allows me to look for "problem areas" which are then marked in red. The individual entries can then be corrected one by one. However, these changes do not always seem to be transferred to the hidden layer. This is evident either from trying a search for the term (ctrl f), or exporting to Word. Both yield the original, not the corrected, ocr result.
Second problem: Once I mark a problem area as solved, there is no way to access that word, other than starting all over again.
Third problem: The keyboard shortcuts in the submenu don't always work.
Improving the scan quality is no solution because some older characters have no equivalent anyway.
The only solution seems to me to access the hidden text in some way and edit directly there. I did not find any mentioning of that in Acrobat's help or the forums, however. So I expect it's still not possible?
(As an aside, I'd like to submit the problem to Adobe but don't know how)

What you're asking for is not currently possible with the native tools in the Acrobat Family, but could be done with plugins.
When you run Searchable Image on a file, the text objects created on the page have a tag that sets their text rending mode to 3 (which tells compliant PDF applications that they are invisible but selectable - in effect they have no active stroke or fill). Acrobat doesn't let you change the text rendering mode, but there are third-party 'COS editor' plugins (Google for vendors) which can change any tags in the file stream. As you don't have any 'real' text in the file, the pseudo-workflow would be to search and replace the "/Tr/3" tag with "/Tr/0" so the text is visible, do your editing stuff, then reset it.

  • Acrobat could not access the recognition service when OCRing

I am getting the error message "Acrobat could not access the recognition service because unable to locate the paper capture recognition service." I get this message when trying to OCR documents. I tried the fix for Acrobat 8 where you copy the drsd832.dll file and this still didn't work. I also tried turning the security (enhanced) settings to 'off' which also didn't work. I was wondering if any of you have encountered a similar problem and have found a solution. I am getting this problem in a networked corporate environment on multiple computers. It is also happening to files on the network rather than files on the local computers.

Just to be sure, you are trying to use the OCR that is part of AA8 and not the OCR service that is an online service? I think the latter was setup for use with AA8 Std. What menus and selections are you making to get OCR?

  • Adding text as hidden layer in PDF's

Hi, I have some hand written documents (Old genealogy letters) which I would like to be made searchable. Can I scan the documents as PDF’s, then manually word process the documents and add this text as a hidden text layer? Thanks Doctor Keo

    About Acrobat OCR.
    Three methods.
    #1 Searchable Image
    #2 Searchable Image (Exact)
    #3 -
    (a) Formatted Text and Graphics (prior to Acrobat 9)
    (b) ClearScan (Acrobat 9)
#1 - Provides OCR output as a hidden text layer. Will perform some "adjustment" to the image.
#2. - Provides OCR output as a hidden text layer. Will not "adjustment" to the image.
    #3. a & b
If process thinks it "knows" what the character is then it replaces the image of the character.
If process is not sure what the character is then it flags the character(s) as "suspects".
    End-user can edit "suspects".
If process does not know what the character is the character's image is left alone as a bit-mapped image.
Note that "ICR" vice "OCR" is meant for handwritten material that has been scanned.
    Acrobat does not provide "ICR".
However, text from a typewritter typically provides accurate OCR provided the scan is at high enough resolution (typically, 300 ppi).
If #1 or #2 is used you can always Save As to a *.txt file.
This can be brought into a text editor, word processor, page layout application, etc.
There, you can create a "clean" copy from which a PDF can be made.
Provide the Scan of the original and use a PDF Bookmark or a Button Field having a link action to go to the copy having the corrected content with renderable text. Make a Catalog index of the cleaned up text PDFs to support advanced search.
For all practicable purposes, there is no manipulation/edits/etc. to the hidden layer of OCR output.
    Be well...

  • Please provide facility to correct Acrobat's OCR errors

When Acrobat 8 OCRs a document, it makes a fair number of errors - which I could live with if one could correct the errors afterwards.
"Find OCR Suspect" doesn't find anything because Acrobat "thinks" it has made no errors - but it always does make some; all OCR programs do, but all others do allow one to correct the errors afterwards.
Although it is possible to use the touch-up tool to correct the errors, it is extremely difficult to do so because one can't see the text behind the image that one is touching up.
Given that Acrobat OCR has now existed since v4, it's extraordinary that Adobe still hasn't got round to fixing this problem, four full versions later. It wouldn't be at all difficult for them to fix this, by providing a "touch up OCR results" mode via a menu, that displays the text that is under the image.
The reason I and many other people still use Acrobat's OCR is that no "proper OCR program" that I know of preserves the layout perfectly (without a great deal of time-consuming post-OCR fiddling about in a word-processor, and even then not if you don't have the required fonts installed or if the required fonts' licence is non-embeddable). Please could you add the above simple feature, which would turn a currently very clunky OCR feature into an extremely powerful one?
    Dave

I bought InFix but it does not really solve the problem: Yes, InFix shows the hidden text and it can be edited and sent back to being hidden. The problem is that there seems no way to make the original image invisible during the editing. Since the two (image text and hidden text) overlap precisely, one needs to shift the hidden text to somewhere else for viewing and editing and shift it back afterwards, so the whole process becomes too tedious for any serious work.

  • Acrobat could not access the recognition service

I am getting the following error message when attempting to use the OCR function in Adobe Acrobat 8.1.3
Acrobat could not access the recognition service:
Unable to locate the Paper Capture recognition Service. Your installation may be corrupt.
This is probably due to either a low memory situation or an corrupt installation. If the problem is not cleared up by shutting down other applications and/or rebooting, then please re-install Acrobat.
It is certainly not a 'low memory situation'. It is not a 'corrupt user profile'. It was not fixed by uninstalling and re-installing.

  • Usability issues with a permanently hidden layer?

    Hello,
In our application, we are required to create an object with unique properties...the object is basically an opaque grey rectangle. The properties are as follows:
only one of these objects is allowed per page
the object must be "In front" in terms of z-order
other objects cannot exist on the same layer
the object can be resized, but in a limited way (we will be working with the grab handles to help the user understand this)
We have considered a number of different ways of presenting this to the user...
    OPTION 1
make the object a 'page attribute' that can be 'enabled' or 'disabled'
when the attribute is 'enabled', it can be edited/resized
by nature, the object must be on a layer, but we will not show it in the 'layers' dialog box, thus preventing users from incorrectly re-ordering the layer or drawing additional objects on the layer
    OPTION 2
only allow this type of object to be drawn on a layer
    only allow one per layer
present the layer in the layer dialog, but do not allow the layer to be re-ordered
do not allow other Indesign objects to be drawn on the layer
For Option 1, has anyone on this forum seen plugins or indesign objects that appear on a 'hidden' layer? Or is that a 'usability faux pas'?
For Option 2, is it reasonable to create some 'rules' around a layer, limiting its properties so it can provide a unique object?
Of the two, which seems most 'inline' with Indesign's philosophy?
Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Steve

I just ran into this same problem. A rather annoying issue, since you can no longer tell when a movie will be available to rent. And a rather major programming gaff.

  • Access hidden files

How can I access hidden files on an ipod?

    Awesome. Thanks for the info.
To access hidden files, there are a number of options ranging from terminal commands to third party software. Personally, I like the terminal command the best, because it prevents me from having to install more software than what I would like to. So go ahead and open up the Terminal application found inside the Utilities folder. Then type the follow commands verbatim or copy and paste them, hitting Enter after each to execute them.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
Now you should be able to open your iPod up in a Finder window and navigate to and through the previously hidden folders.
And when you are finished you can simply disable the setting again by typing the same thing as above, except that you will change TRUE to FALSE.

  • New to Flash - inserting a navigation onto a html hidden layer

Apologies if I use the wrong terminology - I'm used to
html/css coding, and haven't ventured into Flash yet, but a client
has requested a very specific navigation system and I think Flash
is the only way to achieve it.
It's a fairly straightforward html/css site and the client
wants to have a semi-transparent navigation overlay on the page
(hidden layer) accessible by clicking on the company logo. The
overlay will be an image of a globe with text links at different
angles - hence the need for Flash rather than html. The text should
have mouseover behaviours and link to other pages within the site.
So, since I'm a solid gold newbie, is there a step-by-step
tutorial on achieving this? I think that it's a relatively
straightforward process, just one that I don't know!
    Thanks for your patience.

Sorry, I should have added that I'm running Dreamweaver 8 and
    Flash Professional 8.
    Cheers.

Thanks for this-- I was really banging my head against a wall on a large set of data we needed to OCR and verify.
It took me a while to find the "fill" for the text.  It will show up as a red question mark on the dialog box when you are doing this process.
I like the way that you get to see the scanned text immediately when you change the color, then when you click on the text you see the ocr version.  Very helpful.  Thank you.

  • Acrobat can't access shared review data on WebDAV

Now I'm trying to setup shared review environment using WebDAV.
but, only when i use acrobat on MacOSX, can't access review data.
when i use windows this problem doesn't happen.
Does anyone know the any of reasons, workarounds?
    * Environment
    DAV Server : Apache 2.2.3 (mod_dav, mod_dav_fs) on CentOS 5.6
    Client : Mac OSX 10.6.8
    Acrobat : Acrobat Pro 10.0.0
    * Repro Steps
    1. Open Safari
    2. Access to WebDAV Url
    3. Acrobat (plugin) on Safari seems to open pdf file correctly, but error dialog is appeared.
dialog says "can't connect to ... (in Japanese)"
    * Additional Info
I can uploaded pdf file to WebDAV folder with this(MacOSX) client. (use Shared review wizard of Acrobat)
I can access review data when I use Windows(XP Pro, Acrobat X Pro and Acrobat Reader X 10.1.0)
WebDAV server 100% passed litmus(server protocol compliance test suite)
       litmus : http://www.webdav.org/neon/litmus/
This problem occured both of via http and via https.

I installed Acrobat Reader 10.1.0 on the above Mac (I didn't apply the patch). but the same problem reproduced with this Acrobat Reader.
( get the Dialog box which says "Acrobat cannot connect to the Review Server ..." )
Then I changed the following preferences, This problem has not been solved yet.
    1. Security(Enhanced)
Add webdav host to Privileged Locations.
    2. Trust Manager -> Internet Access ...
Click 'Change Settings...', then Allow webdav site address.
    I verified the followings.
    1. MacOSX Safari can't access to PDF(Shared Review) properly.
After the installing Adobe Reader 10.1.0, while loading pdf, progress bar of Acrobat Reader Plugin began to not progress (not finished to open).
When I open the PDF(not for Shared Review), Reader Plugin can open it correctly.
(I verified Safari's installed plugin setting for pdf  is "Adobe Acrobat Plug-in, Version 10.1.0")
*I verified the following 2-4 with Firefox on MacOSX.
    2. I checked http access log (of webdav server), but there are no access logs from (MacOSX's) Adobe Synchronizer.(I verified this when the firewall of MacOSX was disabled)
    3. Access to PDF file is working properly (Acorobat Reader on MacOSX can display PDF (but shared review data are not)).
    4. When I accessed from Windows XP(Acrobat Reader), like the following http access log has been recorded.
    xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - suda [22/Sep/2011:15:41:55 +0900] "GET /webdavtest/2/413/1/NEW_0003_review.pdf__735c6012134e4f9f9fbdebb4b9029b39/masao.suda.at.i nteraction-i.co.jp.xml HTTP/1.1" 304 - "-" "Mozilla/3.0 (compatible; Adobe Synchronizer 10.1.1)"
It seems that Adobe Synchronizer on MacOSX (Adobe Resource Synchronizer) doesn't work properly.
In the previous post. Once I (and my co-worker) verified this was solved certainly.
I found similar issue (  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/850377 ). was this problem solved?

  • Autoplay movie in hidden layer

My students are creating portfolios in Dreamweaver, and one

in which he wants a QT movie to play. He set the autostart
attribute to false, since the movie was playing when the page

    Hi Robin,
Except for the sarcasm, I do agree with Alan and Bonnie
    - Don't see a hidden layer and the animation plays as soon as
    you open the page.
If you try the flash forums, they may have some advanced
action scripting which would maybe let you achieve what you want -
the movie should play only when the layer is visible.
In my opinion, some user interaction or external trigger
would be required with the flash movie (not the layer/html content)
to trigger a change - make the movie stop or make it play.
    A suggestion for you-
You need to apply the fix for active content so the flash
movie doesn't show an alert "click to activate and use this
control". Incase you're using dreamweaver8, if you update to 8.0.2,
the fix comes with the update. The update is available on the Adobe
