Actions and creating different orientations/layers/sizes from a single file - is it worth it?

I know this is the scripting forum - but this topic seemed more appropriate here than in PS Mac general.
Im a graphic designer for a company that builds a ton of apps - apps for many different kinds of phones, tablets, and set-top boxes. For each new app that comes in I need to create a package of graphics that includes banners, icons, and bootscreens that currently totals 60 images per package. The time consuming thing is that, since every package requires different branding/number or layers/images/orientation - I end up adjusting & resizing them all myself. I've gotten pretty good at it and it takes about an hour and 15 per package but I'd love to automate it so I can work on other things.
I've experimented with actions in the past but since each package is different, theres always something that ends up needing to be tweaked in almost every image. Granted I haven't given a ton of time to experimentation, after the 2nd or 3rd recording of actions it looks like it's not working out and I need to move on to something more pressing. I don't want to spend more time fixing things than it would take to resize them myself. I've thought about grouping things in folders with names actions can recognize no matter which package I'm working on, but then again it seems like I run into trouble with things being wrong when adding/removing layers and saving from portrait to landscape to icon to banner.
The big question here is: is it even worth it for me to keep experimenting with actions when I've already gotten so quick resizing them myself? Is there anything automation can speed up in this case?
Sorry if there's an obvious answer I'm missing - every article I can find in my research is about simple batch photo resizing and the like. I'd just like to finally put this question of automation to rest, or find a way to speed this up.

I think there are two questions here:
1) Would script/action automation be a good business investment for the job you mentioned
2) Should you be the one that creates that automation
For #1, you did not provide enough information to answer the question. Here is one approach. Take the number of hours in a year that you spend doing this work for your company. Multiply that by your equivablent hourly rate. That is how much the company is spending now to get the job done per year. If the cost of putting a piece of automation in place is substantially smaller than that then it is a good business decision assuming that either a) your time can be spent creating other valuable work for the company or b) the company can reduce your hours and spend less money ( I bet your not liking option b ).
For #2 (which actually feeds into #1), is what would be the least expensive way to implement a script/action to do this automation. You have only considered doing it yourself. The work could be contracted out as well. Sounds like the amount of time for you to come up with a solution is pretty unpredictable which means having someone with more experience in this area may be able to do the job with higher predictability. I am sure the job could be hired out and they could probably give you an estimate on how much it would cost once they understood the the customer requirements. One thing to keep in mind is support for whatever automation work is done. If you do not know how to maintain a script, then over time when no doubt enhancements are needed or you evolve to PS CS6 more work may be needed. So you would want someone that is realiable and would be around in the future ideally.

I am trying to create a print ready PDF from a word file with unacceptable results.
The word file has a trim size of 6” x 9”. It has been set to mirror margins with the inner, top and bottom margins set to 0.75”, the outer margin is set to 0.5” and the gutter to 0.14”.
It doesn’t matter if I create the PDF from inside Word, or open Acrobat Pro 11.0.9 and click Create From File, while the resulting document size is correct and the odd numbered pages reflect the correct margins, the even numbered pages do not. This results in some text near the outer margin, as well as the page numbers being omitted.
Does anyone know how to correct this?
I just noticed that some of the odd numbered pages' text is also cropped. Apparently Acrobat is refusing to set side margins to smaller than 1" (@ 3cm).

I'm away from my printer, so I'll try it later. Even so, the proposed test is irrelevant. I operate a small publishing house and am trying to upload certain novels to Ingram, the largest book distributor in the world. The specifications I've set are the specifications they've asked for. Since they've said that the results I'm obtaining are unacceptable, and since they demand submission in PDF form, this renders Acrobat Pro for Mac completely unacceptable for anyone in the publication industry. As far as I can tell, Adobe has a serious bug here that it needs to fix—and at once.

How do I isolate and save different sections of a song as separate files

I am trying to isolate and save different portions of a song as separate files. What is the easiest way to do this. I was thinking of copying and pasting into a new GB window, but cant find anything to open a new window. If a piece i want to save is highlighted in the editor, and I go save as, wouldn't that re-save the entire song again? I have tried highlighting and then dragging the portion to a directory in finder, but that doesn't work. Any other ideas suggestions?

Correct. This is the best way to achieve what you want:
Open your song, do a "Save as ..." with the name of the first section, delete all the parts that don't belong to it, and save again. Repeat this procedure (always starting with the complete song) for every section.

Hi Kaushik,
You can add the existing zip file into your workspace by the following way -
First open the NWDS and create a new project by clicking file -> new -> Project -> Simple -> Project
and then File -> Import -> zipfile and then browse the zip file into the newly created project.
or else you can also unzip the zip file into a folder and then Use the option of Import an exisitng project into workspace. You can find this in the File-> import -> Existing project into workspace. and then use the Browse option to browse to the existing folder.
After importing the project you need to rebuild the project

Using actions and batch processing to maximize compatibility on old psd files

My apologies if this has been answered -- in my search I saw that it was asked multiple times, but not answered.
My goal is to be able to import 5 years of PSD files into Lightroom that were originally saved with maximize compatibility turned off. These files are in shoot folders within year folders.
I have been trying to do this with an action and batch processing through Bridge (Tools>PS>Batch). After switching preferences to MC=always, I have tried an action with a Save command, but that doesn't switch the file to max compat on. Save As does, but it also fixes the destination of the save in the action to a specific folder. I want to be able to overwrite the existing PSD file, leaving it where it is.
Has anyone successfully tackled this issue? I know I can handle it folder by folder, with an action for each folder, but that just wouldn't be cool.

L Show - Yes, I found a way and did just that.
Everything as you wrote, using the save-as option. Yes, it will put the folder name into the action BUT it will override it when you run your batch from bridge IF you check in the box "override action save-as command" (and destination: save and close).
Works like a charm (although slow - not utilizing the multiple cores :( )

Hi guys. Here's what I'm really trying to do...It's to do with digital - DAB - radio.
I've noticed on DAB radio that certain songs exhibit weird and severe loss of stereo image. e.g.
When listening to "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors the keyboard solo goes missing. Totally vanished, bar a weak reverb remnant.
When I first heard this problem it reminded me instantly of an experiment I made with MS encoding on an analogue desk with that very track some years ago: which I mentioned in my first thread.
I'm not attempting to use MS here for a positive purpose. Quite the reverse! It is the INCONPATIBILTY that I am after.
DAB is broadcasted in the UK using MP2 encoding, which divides the spectrum into 750Hz portions. That makes 13 portions, roughly, if you divide 750 into 10000. I've just set up 13 versions of Riders on the Storm and have bandwidth limited each accordingly: 20 Hz-770 Hz, 770 Hz-1520 Hz, 1520 Hz-2270 Hz etc.. Low and behold, weird things are already starting to happen to the stereo image. Jim Morrison's vocal exihibits a 1.5 second time delay (i.e. loss of reverb intergity, reverb transformed into a discrete one beat time delay) when all thirteen tracks are played together. Now I'm going to try MS encoding this to replicate the way DAB would send these chunks across the airwaves.
If you've got time, try it too! And please give me some more tips on how to create MS from stereo files.

Problem creating an AIR installer (.exe) from a .fla file.

I am trying to create an Adobe AIR installer(.exe). I already
created the .fla file and tested it. It didn't seem to work and

I created a new environment variable called JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS
of -Xmx256M. And then the .fla file seemed to work . Apparently
there is too much code in my .fla file with as many as 20 videos
(.flv) and lot of radio-buttons ( I mean A lot of them !!! )...
Now with the .fla file working, when I am trying to create an
AIR installer it is throwing the error,
" Error creating AIR file. Picked up JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS: -Xmx256M
so I am not able to create the AIR Installer. and If I change
back the -Xmx 256M then my .fla file won't work. So what do I do
now ? I somehow removed the above -Xmx 256M variable and created a
AIR installer with a self-signed certificate and when I try to
install that AIR installer, I get another error message,
"The application could not be installed. Try installing it
again. If the problem persists, contact the application author.
Error# 0".
So I have 2 questions:
1. how do I create this AIR installer(.exe) and make it work
as a .exe file and run it without having Adobe flash CS3 installed
on another computer and please help me in my case as above.
2. Also, would I need to buy a digital certificate to create
the AIR installer or can I use a self-signed certificate to create
an AIR installer and use it to install the AIR application on a few
computers ? Please help

Can you restore a project from a single file

Using Windows XP / RH8 & RH7 / RSC 3.1
Is there a single file that lets you restore a project? My co-worker believes this is the case, but I can find nothing in the RH Help, or on this forum using a search term of "restore project", "restore from file", "file types" etc.
I can't find the Help page that has the explanation of each file type, which used to be easy to find.
What we are looking for is an equivalent to the FHB file in ForeHelp. You can restore the complete project from that one file.
I have tried a dozen searches on the forum and get no reponses for anything. Is search even working?
Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

There is no single file that restores the source project. You can reverse engineer a CHM and get close but I don't think that is what you are looking for.
The only single file method is a zip of your project!

Formatted .data file, reading in and creating an array of objects from data

Hi there, I have written a text file with the following format;
List of random personal data: length 100
1 : Atg : Age 27 : Income 70000
2 : Dho : Age 57 : Income 110000
3 : Lid : Age 40 : Income 460000
4 : Wgeecnce : Age 43 : Income 370000
and so on.
These three pieces of data, Name,Age and Income were all generated randomly to be stored in an array of objects of class Person.
Now what I must do is , read in this very file and re-create the array of objects that they were initially written from.
I'm totally lost on how to go about doing this, I have only been learning java for the last month so anyone that can lend me a hand, that would be superb!

Looking at you other thread, you are able to create the code needed - so what's the problem?
Here's an (not the only) approach:
Create an array of the necessary length to hold the 3 variables, or, if you don't know the length of the file, create a class to contain the data. Then create an ArrayList to hold an instance of the class..
Use the Scanner class to read and parse the file contents into the appropriate variables.
Add each variable to either the array, or to an instance of the class and add that instance to the arraylist.

Create different billing document types from same sales order type

Please take a common document flow, just like this one:
- Sales Order (type ZE01 )
- Outbound Delivery
- Billing Document ( ZA or ZB )
The billing document is based on the outbound delivery. Here is the requirement that we need to implement:
- We need to determine different billing document types ( ZA or ZB ) according to a custom determination, based on a Z table. In some cases the billing document will be type ZA, in other cases it will be type ZB. I've been told that I can achieve this via copy control , but some extra help would be welcome.

Basically in our current project a sales order can be billied using 6 different billing document types. The copy controls between the sales document and billing document is been set up for all the 6different billing doc types and currently the users are manually selecting the billing document type in VF01 .The buisness insists on making this automated.They want the billing document type to be determined based on some custom condtions.
Any inputs regarding this is highly appreciated.
