Activating a zoneset

Hello I am new to Fabric Switches.
I have added a new zone to our zoneset. The fabric only has one active zoneset and I have backed up the Fabric.
The zone I created has two FCALIAS attached.
At this point I need to activate the zoneset with the changes and I have read the command is:
zoneset activate name "Zoneset" vsan XXX
but I also found another one:
Zoneset distribute full vsan XXX
Which one should I use? We have two Fabrics but some servers are not on each fabric yet so I want it as non disruptive as possible when I change one of the fabrics..really I don't want any downtime.
Also because I inherited these Fabrics I don't know if there are any other pending changes. Is there a command to see all the new changes before I activate (or distribute)?
A show zone statistics has me a little worried with the "Number of Change Requests Recvd: 236"
Statistics For VSAN

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Zoneset activate is required.  It tells the switch to enforce the changes.
Zoneset distribute is optional and can be configured to automatically distribute with activate.  This generally allows you to configure zoning from any switch in the fabric.
fcalias is distributed with zoneset distribute.
Upon activation, the fcalias is converted to pwwn in the active zoneset..
More info can be found here.

  • IVR Zoneset activation

    Hello!
I have a working (activated) IVR zoneset in which i want to add next zone and i have three questions.
    1. Do i have to activate this zoneset when i add new zone?
    2. Do i have to make changes on all ivr enabled switches?
    3. Is it possible that this modification will stop the traffic in SAN?
    Thx for your response.
    Best Regards.

    1) yes, you have to add new zone to active zone set and activate, just like you do when adding zones to regular zonesets
    2) if IVR distribution is enabled, no
    3) if you are not messing with existing zones then no

  • Zoneset question

Have a old McData 4Gb FC switch module on a IBM BladeCenter that we are decommissioning connected to a Cisco MDS 9506 switch.  The person I tasked this with did not take down the uplink port or disconnect the fiber or clear the configuration before resetting the switch to factory default. When he reset to factory config the active zoneset on the Cisco MDS was deactivated and half the paths to the storage arrays went down.  Activating the zoneset bought everything back online but we are trying to understand why this would cause the zoneset to become inactive?

    Non-Disruptive.
When enabling enhanced-zoning, make sure you enable it from the switch that contains a complete full-zoneset database as it will distribute/sync the fullzoneset from that one switch and overwrite the full zonesets (in that specific VSAN) of the others.

  • Do we have a way to see the diffence b/n running & start-up config in FM GUI

    Hello
Do we have a way to see the diffence between running & start-up config in FM GUI similar to show running-config difference in CLI. I understand that when activating the zoneset the differneces are shown, however if there are other changes made how can the difference b/n ru & start be viewed in GUI (FM)
    Please advise
    Thanks

  • Misconfigured zoning and had to bounce ports, can someone explain?

I am working in a lab, and had the following configuration:
    HOST1-PORT1 connected to MDS1 in VSAN10
    HOST2-PORT1 connected to MDS2 in VSAN 20
    DISK1-PORT2 connected to MDS2 in VSAN10
    DISK2-PORT2 connected to MDS1 in VSAN 20
MDS1 and MDS2 were connected via a FCIP tunnel.
I could see everything as expected in the fcns database. What I wanted to do was have HOST1 use DISK1 from over the FCIP tunnel and HOST2 use DISK2 over the FCIP tunnel.
What I accidently did, was zone as follows:
    Zone10
    HOST1 DISK1
    Zone20
    HOST2 DISK1
From HOST1 I could not see DISK1 (windows disk manager), I could see it from HOST2 however, was able to format it and work with it. Once I figured out that I had zoned that drive to two hosts, I immediately went to correct it. And by the way, Sansurfer on HOST1 did show it saw the drive, but windows disk tools did not see it.
So on the MDS, I removed the incorrect pwwn, added the correct one, and activated the zoneset. Still HOST1 could not see the drive. HOST2 however could now see its new (corrected) drive. HOST2's sansurfer topology map was actually still showing both PWWN's, not sure if that was just cached or not as the DISK1 was no longer zoned to it.
So I reboot each HOST. Still no go, HOST1 could not see the DISK1! BTW, I checked the active zoneset and MDS reported all members correct and visible. So then I bounced each VSAN......honestly because I wasn't sure what else to do, and that still did not fix the issue, I tried to tell the disk management to rediscover drives but to no avail. Finally, came the sledgehammer. I bounced the actual FC ports. This fixed the problem.
My question is, is this normal behavior? I thought when I rebooted the windows hosts, it would cause them to do FLOGI again which I thought would be same as bouncing the FC ports. Did bouncing the host ports have anything to do with this resolution? Or was it the bouncing of the DISK ports that was the fix? What situation did I get myself into that the drive could not be seen by windows even though it was zoned to it?

I have seen Windows OS do some weird things like this. I have had to reboot the system when the HBA config tool saw the FC attached luns and they looked just fine in the tool, but Disk Manager would not pick them up.
I have traced, as Inch suggested, with a PAA-2 and MDS span, and issued a re-scan on the Windows Disk Manager panel...and the trace show nothing being sent by the port the Windows box was plugged into. I had to bounce the port on the MDS and I saw the Windows box issue all the normal bring up stuff and register with the FC nameserver...then it got all the devices in teh zone...then I expected a PLOGI from the HBA to the storage device....nothing.
That's when I rebooted and the trace showed the Windows box finally issue the PLOGI and PRLI to the storage device.
Bottom line, when I make changes to zoning for a Windows environment, I reboot.
Linux and Solaris seem to handle zone changes better. As for AIX 5.3...let's not go there :)
    My 2 cents,
    Mike

  • Zoning implications without scheduled maintenance time?

We have a simple topology, but wish to impliment zoning. I have the zones created, but have not yet activated them. Can I activated them without scheduling a maintenance window? Does data flow stop temporarily while zones are activated?
    Thanks

    Thank you for your response!
Correct. We currently have 8 servers targeting a storage device in an unzoned environment. The Default Zone Behavior = Permit. I have created 8 different zones, each having a server targeting the srorage device. I have include these 8 into a zoneset, but haven't activated the zoneset yet. We have identical configs on 2 9216's. Each server has a single connection to each of the 9216's and each of the 9216's are conected to the storage device. The 9216's do not have an ISL trunk between them. Our intention is to activated the zoneset on each switch one at a time and do not know what to expect in regard to adverse behavior.
    Thank You.

  • Activating zoneset only from the core switch

    Folks,
How can i restrict so that only the core switch is allowed to make changes to the active zoneset?
Also if I am merging two switches and they have active zonesets but with different names, would that merge the two fabrics?
    Thanks,
    Tarun

your probably thinking about NPV, NPV is disruptive but NPIV isn't. It is just a feature that you would enable on the core.
The acronyms are confusing and easily mixed up.
NPIV allows multiple initiators to login over a single FC/port-channel. NPV changes the operation of the switch so that to the core it looks like a host with a lot of initiators/HBAs. In NPV mode the edge switch doesn't consume any FC domain IDs.

  • MDS Zoning and 1 Active Zoneset

I had a question regarding the statement that on a single MDS 9148 for example, only one Zone Set can be active. However, isn't it also true that if I have 2 VSANs 3 and 5 defined on this single MDS, I can have 2 active zone sets (1 per vsan) correct?
    Thanks

    Hello
Yes, you are 100% correct.  One active per VSAN

  • How to undo activated OSB session with WLST?

Does anybody know if there´s a chance to undo an activated OSB session with WLST?
There´s a way to undo an UNactivated session but not an activated one (like the undo session in /sbconsole).
    Thanks in advance.

"zone copy active-zoneset full-zoneset vsan 2" is the correct command.  It will overwrite the full zoneset (identical) and ready to edit.

  • Case sensitivity in zoneset naming

Very new at this. I embarrassingly created a zoneset with the same name as our active zoneset, except that the name is in lower case, rather than in mixed upper and lower case of the active zoneset. Can I simply enter the syntax: no zoneset name <zoneset name>, and not risk removing the active zoneset?
    good zoneset ZoneSet-A-00
    bad zoneset zoneset-a-00
    Thanks...blush

    Good morning,
What you can do is create your own little test case and find out!
    1. Create a new vsan
    2. add a few ports to the vsan
    3. create a new zoneset
    4. create another zoneset with upper/lower in the same name
    5. delete one and see what happens.
This is one of the best things about vsans. You can do test after test in a completly isolotated environment on the one switch!
Let me know if you need any more info on doing this.
    Cheers

  • Renaming Zones and Zonesets

    Good Day,
Just a basic question. We use 9509's and 9513's for our SAN configuration. If I rename either a zone or an active zoneset does this in any way disrupt the connections using the zone or the zoneset. I want to standardize the naming conventions for our systems to better identify what they serve.
    Thanks
    Jeffrey

I'm not sure you can just rename the zone and zoneset. I think you may have to edit the current zoneset and add in duplicate zones with the new name, then delete the existing zones, with the old name, and then reactivate the current zoneset to push the change out. As long as there is no change in zone membership, no connectivity should be impacted.
As for the zoneset name, you may have to create a duplicate zoneset with the new name, and all the zones...with the new names...then activate the new zoneset name. Again, this should cause no impact to existing connectivity since the zone members will not be changing.
    Hope this helps,
    Mike

  • Adding zones into zoneset

    hello
how do a new zone is made the member of the existing zoneset.
we have an active zoneset for a vsan. looking to add a zone into this zoneset
    steps followed
created device alias for a host with its pwnn
    created a zone
add the device alias into the zone
add the zone into the zoneset
we have around 26 zones into this zoneset. show zone status says total zones 27, 26 are active. this new zone is not active
how to make this new zone active? is it that we have to use the command zone activate name <zonesetname>
but the zoneset is already active?
    i prefer using CLI
    Thanks

From the CLI it should be a case of running "activate" to activate a zoneset and "distribute" to  enable zoneset propagation.
    Thanks
