Activex view/print control downloads

Currently running SAP Business Objects Enterprise XI R2 in a production environment. We have installed and are testing Enterprise 3.1 and will all likelihood will move this new version into production this upcoming weekend (7/17) and shut down XI R2.
I would love it if someone could PLEASE explain what triggers the whole activex view and print control downloads. This has to be the most frustrating thing with BO product.
Here's the deal. Sometimes it prompts for download, sometimes it does not. Yes, all the activex security controls and plug-in settings are activated properly (ie: prompting for activex download are either enabled or set to prompt). We have a fair number of users who do NOT have local admin rights on their PC's so we were worried we'd have to figure out how to push out the controls. Yet, in testing 3 separate machines (using the new 3.1 release), none of them got prompted for downloads and they were still able to view and/or print reports using activex. I was led to believe that with the new release (3.1), it would be like viewing or printing for the first time and download/install of activex controls would be required. Is that bad information? Does it use the 11.5 activex add-on's that are already installed for current production system instead?
Bottom line, I have seen it prompt on some machines and not on others. All machines are actively using the XI R2 production system also. I just have them use a differnt link to test the 3.1 release. So, what triggers the request for download? Why do some users get the prompt and others don't?

Why are you doing this with BO4 just released?
the issue of active X depends on
the version of IE
the settings of download ActiveX
IF the Active X download have already happened
some of these may already be on web sites used have already downloaded (nothing to do with CR)

  • Need alternative for activex print control using Crystal reports 2008

I have created a .Net web application (2.0/3.5 .Net framework) with crystal reports 2008.
Reports are viewed using Crystal reports 2008 activex viewer.
On click of PRINT icon in activex viewer, activex print control download prompt will be displayed on client machine.
I need to avoid downloading of activex print control on client machine. Is there any other alternative or option to use print functionality in viewer without downloading activex print control on client machine?
Or Is there any other workaround for print functionality in Crystal reports 2008 Viewer without downloading activex print control?
Note: Activex print control download prompt will not be displayed when using Crystal reprots XI Release 2 version.
    Thanks,
    Jagannath

Does anyone know which files need to be registered for the ActiveX print control?  We occasionally have users who somehow break their Crystal ActiveX controls, and they can no longer see the print options.  In Crystal 10, I was able to fix these issues by pushing a package which registered several files on the user's computer.

  • Report Viewer WebPart for Sharepoint - Printing (Unable to load client print control)

    Hi there,
I am running a report via the report viewer web part on a SharePoint page.  The report itself is working great.  But when I attempt to print it, I get a prompt to install something....and then it is followed up with "Unable to load client
    print control".
There are some posts out there about updating the a certain CU or to find the RSClientPrint cab and unloading the dlls into the system32 folder and registering it.  I've tried that but no go.
Anyone else encounter this issue?  If so, potential solutions?
    SP 2010 - 14.0.7221.5000
SQL Server 2008 R2 (Reporting Server)- 10.50.1617  (have tried updating to 10.50.6000.34)
    IE = 10.0.9200
And yes, I am running as local admin....so there shouldn't be any issue installing the active x component on IE.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Eric,
According to your description, you can't load the print button in your sharepoint site. Right?
In Reporting Services, Each user who wants to use the print feature must download and install the ActiveX control that provides client print functionality. The first time a user clicks the
Printer icon on the report toolbar, the Microsoft ActiveX control is downloaded to the computer. After the control is downloaded, the
Print dialog box displays whenever the user clicks the Printer icon.
So in this scenario, please enable the setting Download signed
ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer and download it. Please follow the steps below:
    Click Tools -> Internet options.
Switch to the Security tab, select the Trusted sites zone, and then click
    Sites.
Type the URL of the SQL reporting server, click Add, and then click Close.
Click the Custom level button, scroll to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins
    node.
Click Enable for Download signed ActiveX controls, and then click OK.
Then we need to have the
    EnableClientPrinting is set to true.
In SharePoint Central Administration, click Application Management.
    Click Manage service applications.
Click the name of your Reporting Services service application, and then click
    Manage in the SharePoint ribbon.
    Click System Settings.
Select Enable Client Printing. The Enable Client Printing option is near the bottom of the page.
    Click OK.

    Manual installation
To manually install the ActiveX Viewer on the client computer:
    1. Copy the ActiveXViewer.cab file from the server to the client computer, and extract its contents to a temporary folder.
    2. Move the files Crviewer.dll, Crviewer9.dll, Sviewhlp.dll, and Swebrs.dll to the System32 folder. Keep this folder visible.
    3. On the Start menu, click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
    4. In the Open box, type âu20ACu0153regsvr32âu20AC and then drag and drop the Crviewer.dll file icon from the System32 folder onto the Run dialog box.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the files Crviewer9.dll, Sviewhlp.dll, and Swebrs.dll.

  • Printing Extremely Slow Using Crystal Reports 2008 ActiveX Print Control

    Problem:
We are trying to upgrade our existing Crystal Reports 10.0 ActiveX Viewer ASP based reports to the new Crystal Reports 2008 ASPX Report Viewer but are having print performance issues that have prohibited us from moving forward.
    Environment:
Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition 32-bit with SP1
IIS 6.0 running ASP .NET version 2.0.50727
    Crystal Reports 2008 SP0 with FP1
Crystal PrintControl.dll version 12.0.0.796 (verified on server and client)
    Details:
Crystal Reports 2008 ASPX Report Viewer Object & ActiveX Print Control Report Printing Scenario
From a typical 27 page report, the user clicks the Print icon from the ASPX Report Viewer Object.
The Print window with the message Crystal Reports Print Control immediately appears on the screen.  This window is on the screen for approx 30 seconds.
The Print Setup window finally appears on the screen.  The user verifies the printer, chooses to print pages 1-5, and clicks the Print button from the window.
The Retrieving page 1 message appears in the Print window.  The message remains in the window for approx 30 seconds.
The Printing page 1 message appears in the Print window.  The message remains in the window for approx 30 seconds.
The Printing page 2 message appears in the Print window.  The message remains in the window for approx 30 seconds.
The Printing page 3 message appears in the Print window.  The message remains in the window for approx 30 seconds.
The Printing page 4 message appears in the Print window.  The message remains in the window for approx 30 seconds.
The Printing page 5 message appears in the Print window.  The message is in the window for less than 1 second.
After 3 MINUTES of waiting the report finally starts printing.
Crystal Reports 10 ASP ActiveX Report Viewer Report Printing Scenario
From the same typical 27 page report that was used in the Crystal Reports 2008 scenario, the user clicks the Print icon from the ASP ActiveX Report Viewer.
The Print window Immediately appears on the screen.  The user verifies the printer, chooses to print pages 1-5, and clicks the Print button from the window.
The Print window Immediately disappears from the screen and the report Immediately starts printing.
The entire print process takes only 3 u2013 4 SECONDS.
Even  though we are trying to get the users to decrease the amount of paper used in report printing.  They still do a significant amount of printing.  The difference between the print performance using Crystal Reports 10 (3-4 seconds) and Crystal Reports 2008 (3 minutes) is totally unacceptable to our users.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a known fix for it?  This is the only thing holding us back from our upgrade and it has become very frustrating to us.
Much thanks to anyone that can shed some light on this.

    Hi Brian,
Please have a look at [this|Crystal 11.5 Activex control for viewer; post.
However, have you tried with the No Printer options available in Print Options window from designer?

  • ActiveX Print Control

    1) I am having issues using the ActiveX print control.
If I login as an Administrator I can get the control to work properly.
On the dame machine I login as a standard user and I cannot use the print control.
    Any ideas why this is?
It does sound like a permissions issue but I dont know where to start looking.
This only happens on one client site.
    2) I do have another client getting issues with the print control. They print a report using the control. It prints out but they get an error "An error occured on the server. Printing will be stopped."

It's best to send the request via your IT organization - I'm assuming they're the ones who locked down the ActiveX download feature.
    Sincerely,

    Issue:
The browser shuts down after last page is queued for printing upon installing ActiveX print control for the first time in all XP SP3 environments.  Issue does not occur when using Vista or Windows 7.  Subsequent printing works fine after ActiveX print control has been installed once.
    Steps Taken:
-"Enabled memory protection to help mitigate online attacks" option in IE and turned on DEP on OS - this is mandatory for company security policies.  Issue does not occur if this option is turned off.
-Not reproducible on my end under same environment
-PDF printing works, however this is not a feasible solution
-issue does not occur for IE6 and IE7 in XP, and IE8 on Windows 7
-disabling DEP via boot.ini also removes issue
-upgrading client workstation to Windows 7 also not a viable solution
-validated version of  \Business Objects\common\4.0\crystalreportviewers12 \ActiveXControls\PrintControl.dll on the BOE server as 12.3.1.684
-on client machines, added to Trusted Sites  the web site of report origin. Open internet explorer >Tools>Internet Options>Security Tab>Trusted Sites Security Zone >Click Sites> Add Site by typing the web site address---> Click Add -->OK then close the internet Options dialog box.

It's already been validated that turning off DEP works. however, DEP is mandatory for this customer.
I did come across the release notes for IE8 at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/dd441788, indicating the following,
Turn off Data Execution Prevention group policy
The Group Policy setting, Turn off Data Execution Prevention (Windows Components | Internet Explorer | Security Features), does not currently function as expected. While the Internet Control Panel option will appear to be disabled, Data Execution Prevention is still turned on. This is a known problem and will be corrected it in a future update.

  • Problem of installing Crystal Reports Print Control(ActiveX)

    Environment
    Windows 20003 SP1
    ASP.NET 2.0
    Crystal Reports XI SP4
    Background
I am converting ASP application to ASP.NET.
I used ActiveX Viewer on ASP.
Now, I decide to use CrystalReportViewer and PrintControl(ActiveX) on ASP.NET.
    CrystalReportViewer.PrintMode = CrystalDecisions.Web.PrintMode.ActiveX
    Problem
I want to make normal user (user which is in "Users" group)  use PrintControl because of security reason.
But normal user can't use PrintControl.
    Reproduce Procedure:
    1. logon windows as admin user.
    2. install ActiveX (PrintControl) after clicking print icon.
    3. logon windows as normal user.
    4. when normal user clicks print icon, nothing happens.
(small dialog for printing is displayed, but nothing happens. It looks like "hang". )
When I used ActiveXViewer on ASP, the following steps worked well.
    1. logon windows as admin user.
    2. Install ActiveX (ActiveXViewer) in report screen.
    3. Logon windows as nomal user.
    4. normal user (of cource, other admin users) can use ActiveXViewer without installation.
Could you tell me how to use PrintControl on normal user authority?

Thank you very much for your answer.
    I solved it.
The cause of this problem is , the dll version string in print.js which creates <OBJECT> tag dinamically is different from dll file version.
i.e. the version string in <OBJECT> tag is newer than dll version.
As a result, each time user accesses HTMLViewer, cab file is downloaded and installed.
We modified the dll version string in print.js, and my problem is fixed.

You can prevent it from being printed by applying a security policy to it

    Dear All,

    Hi, Larry,
Thank you for your answer which remind me and lead me to the resolution. I have struggling on this SQL Server Report Server 2012/Client printing control for
    2 days.
I just cannot figure out why it kept prompting non-admin XenApp users for SSRS installation. Thanks for your notes again.
I have 2008 R2 server setup as XenApp server for the publish apps. We published the IE to user to access Web application with SQL 2012 reporting service in
    the backend.
In the control environment, users do not have permission to install any software. This SSRS has to be installed as administrator under “Install mode” in XenApp
    server.
Yes, 32bit IE works for me but 64bit IE works too.
You just need to ensure which version of IE you’re using to install the SSRS. I’m not aware of using 32bit IE for SSRS installation in server but publish 64bit
IE to client.  That’s my mistake.
    Thanks again.

  • Where can I find a copy of the Crystal Report Print Control

    Hello,
Our users have access to a report portal developed in house which uses the Crystal Report Viewer to display the Crystal Reports created in Visual Studio 2010. the first time they open the portal and try to print the report the loading dialog box that comes up keeps spinning and spinning. • SSRS 2014 Printer Control Icon missing in Internet Explorer 11

I'm trying to determine what the latest status is with the printer control on Internet Explorer 11.
We have a Windows 2012 Server R2 running SQL 2014 and I've installed the latest report viewer distributable (2012 server.)
In IE 11 I still cannot see the printer control icon.
Is there a known, reliable fix for this or can I just assume that the printer icon is a pre-IE 11 feature?
    Thank You!

    Hi Bob,
Based on my understanding, printer button is not available when previewing the report in IE11.
In Reporting Service, each user who wants to use the print feature must download and install the ActiveX control that provides client print functionality. As we tested in our environment, with ActiveX control installed, the printer button is available in
IE11 (SSRS 2014 on Windows Server 2012 R2). So in your scenario, please check if you have installed Active control. If not, please enable the setting Download signed ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer, then you can install the required control. For more
information, please refer to steps below:
    1.Click Tools -> Internet options.
2.Switch to the Security tab, select the Trusted sites zone, and then click
    Sites.
3.Type the URL of Report Server, click Add, and then click
    Close .
4.Click the Custom level button, scroll to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins node.
5.Click Enable for Download signed ActiveX controls, and then click
    OK.
If issue persists, please check if value of EnableClientPrinting is True in SSMS. Please refer to the screenshot below:

  • Problem installing ActiveX viewer in Windows 7

    Hello,
We downloaded the public beta of Windows 7 today and I am getting an error in our web application when it tries to install the Crystal Reports XI ActiveX report viewer (version 11.0.0.1424 of crviewer.dll).  IE8 will issue its normal prompt to ask you if you want to install the control, but after that, the little object image in the upper-left corner of the page turns to a red X.
I tried using the sample code which comes with Crystal XI (SimplePreviewReport.asp in the "BeginHere" folder) and that had the same problem.  I put some debug code into SmartViewerActiveX.asp and found that I was getting an "ActiveX component can't create object" error on this line:
         Set webBroker = CreateObject("CrystalReports11.WebReportBroker.1")
I don't think it's a security issue because I am an administrator on the machine and I didn't have any problems installing other ActiveX controls.  I tried running the web site in both the Local Intranet zone as well as the Trusted Sites zone.  I'm also thinking that the issue is more with Windows 7 than IE8 because I have IE8 Beta 2 installed on a Windows XP machine and the Crystal ActiveX viewer installs just fine there.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

XI R2 is more then an incremental update in some aspects to XI R1. They are officially versioned 11 and 11.5 and XI R2 is considered a new release. However in most aspects to a Crystal R1 customer XI R2 doesn't offer much more in functionality other than it is more up-to-date and is still receiving updates and patches.
With out looking at Operating Systems or other factors I generally recommend R1 customers move to R2 so they are kept up-to-date. However being an new version that does mean you will need to update your projects to call the R2 runtime, and then you can use the R2 merge modules.
As for how R2 merge modules work with Windows 7 I cannot say. We will have to wait until Windows 7 final build comes out before we will get a list of supported products on this Operating System, and this can take upwards of 3 months after the OS is released. I would hazard a guess (NOTE: GUESS is the important word here) that R1 and R2 will not be certified with Windows 7. This does not mean it will not work, but does mean it will not be tested and if errors are found that are particular to this OS they will not be fixed.
Remember that this is just a guess, based on R2 being 3 years old and nearing end of its patch cycle and Windows 7 being at least 4 months away. However this cannot be concidered an official statement it is just my personal opinion. Enough caveats there?

How can I get my HP F380 printer to download?

    Ok, let's try this first...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x+++
        1.    To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
        2.    Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
        3.    Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
        4.    Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."

As an alternative, if you currently have one or more printers listed, you can Option-click the "-" (Remove printer) button.
