Activity Monitor Won't Run

Anyone else having this problem? Activity monitor will simply not run. It starts, then crashes...every time.

Me, too! Since upgrading to SL & then immediately to 10.6.2 a couple days ago.
Well, it won't run - it didn't crash, it just hung on startup. I tried repairing permissions and, after finding this thread, removed the plist file suggested, but no luck. I just realized I should check the log (Console), and found it was putting out this, over and over again:
12/13/09 11:28:47 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ActivityMonitor[4828]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/activitymonitord", ...): No such file or directory
And exiting, then retrying every 10 seconds.
I opened the Activity Monitor package to confirm that activitymonitord is there, but upon rereading the message I realized it's telling me Activity Monitor needs to be in the utilities folder - and I had moved it into a subdirectory (to declutter my Utilities folder). It always worked there in previous systems, but apparently SL's Activity Monitor has a hard-coded address built in.
I moved AM back to where Apple wants it and it immediately opened. Don't know if this helps anyone else, but I thought I'd put this out there in case it does . . .
(Yes, I know you "should" leave programs where Apple puts them and keep your files in your user folder, but I just like to do things my way whenever I can get away with it.)

  • Activity Monitor won't run after leopard install

The only problem i'm having is that when i try and load Activity Monitor it bounces once and crashes. No amount of relaunches and reset/relaunches fixes the problem.
Any ideas? I've also tried launching the old tiger version of Activity Monitor that is on one of my SuperDuper backup external drives, but no luck.
    Thanks,
    Conrad

I apologize for the poor formatting. I did a filter for Activity and found these references to the crash. It looks like i'm missing a framework required for displaying the graphs that activity monitor uses. Any advice on how to go about replacing that?
    Thanks

My mac mini is running slow.  Bought it in 2009.  Activity monitor shows nothing running that should not be.  Someone suggested it might be my operating system?  Check for software updates, and I am current.  Suggestions?

Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utilty by highlighting the Drive & looking at the bottom of the window.

  • Activity Monitor won't open

Lately I cannot open the AM I get the message "AM can not start because of incorrect file permissions I have trashed the AM plist from the preferences in Library but no result. Message concludes "try opening it from utilities in the apps folder" which is exactly where it is.
Any help appreciated. I posted this last year and did not follow up, apologies.

Try reinstalling the Activity Monitor application. Get Pacifist
You can use Pacifist to extract the Activity Monitor application from your restore disk(s) and reinstall it.
Make sure and run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions after you install the app. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Flashplayer installed and active but won't run

Hi. I seem to be having the same problem as several others on here: I've got the latest version of Flash  installed and active on my Win8.1 system, and it shows as an active add-on in the latest version of Firefox, but it stalls on loading and won't run. This started immediately after the latest Flash update was released: I've tried uninstalling and re-installing.
    Thanks.

You're more than welcome to file performance bugs at http://bugbase.adobe.com/.  I noticed that the page on adobe.com took a really long time to load for me as well on Chrome, but Adobe.com is super complex, and I think that has something to do with a poorly performing back-end service.  Since you're seeing the slow script dialog not loading on the watch page, it's pretty clear that Flash Player is installed and playing content under normal circumstances.  The interesting part is that one of those dialogs is talking about JavaScript running on the page, and the other is talking about Flash.  It's unclear without debugging the issue whether it's the browser or the plugin; however, as you've noticed, both work fine in Internet Explorer.
It's important to point out that both Adobe and Microsoft made a tremendous effort in tuning the  Internet Explorer experience for Windows 8 and higher.  The latest versions of IE offer a fast, modern plug-in architecture that efficiently offers defense-in-depth protection against the modern generation of security threats (as opposed to the sandboxing approach that we retrofit to Firefox).  Similarly, Google Chrome provides a modern, secure plug-in architecture and invests heavily in making the Flash experience in the browser great.  I'm a Firefox fan as well, but the reality is that you might be more satisfied with your experience when using a different browser.
For the crash, I'd be happy to take a look at the crash analysis to see if I can find anything useful.
In Firefox, if you type about:crashes in the address bar, you should get a list of recent crashes.
Click each link to submit it to the Mozilla crash reporting system.
Copy the address from the resulting window into a reply here.

  • Slow DSL unless Activity Monitor utility is running?

Very strange behavior w. my new Mac Mini. My DSL speed has droped from 3 Mbps (normal) to around .2Mbps. All other Macs on my home network are doing fine, one w. Tiger OS, the other Snow Leopard.
But get this -- when I launch Activity Monitor, DSL speed immediately jumps up to normal. Close A.M. and my DSL speed is back down to almost non-functioning. Any one heard of this problem before? Thanks.

Wow, no responses. I have heard of apps that conflict with others, but never an app that had to be running for something unrelated to work, in his case my WiFi/DSL.
I generally avoid updating my OS when things are not working right. But maybe in this case, it might be worth the risk? Maybe the OS 10.7.4 update will correct the problem? Anyone agree or disagree? Thanks.

  • Permissions ACL Freakout - Activity Monitor Can't Run - Time Machine?

Occasionally, when I repair disc permissions on 1.5.5, I find that virtually every file on my computer says "ACL found but not expected". The repair takes up two two hours to run.
The repair works, but the condition appears to come back every time I run Time Machine. All of this would be a superficial irritation except that I often can't run Activity Monitor, and have to go through the two-hour permissions repair in order to get that it working again.
Ideally, I'd like to prevent the permissions condition from happening and keep Activity Monitor operable. Any ideas?
    A few tidbits:
    Activity Monitor is in Applications\Utilities
I run Time Machine from an account other than the Admin one
The permissions repair can be done from any account successfully

SuperDuper is fine. Even Disk Utility Restore will do the job.
But I'm beginning to be "cautiously paranoid" with breaking in / testing / torturing / any new drive now (again) for a day or two before putting it into full service. If that sounds hard, just zero the drive and fill it up with junk data that gets reformated later anyway.
Can't go far wrong with WD 640GB $76 from OWC right now. Maybe a couple. Two backup sets for every drive.

  • Os x Mavericks - Activity Monitor won't display

after I upgraded my Mac Mini to Mavericks, I am unable to display the Activity Monitor.  I have run the disk utility to repair permissions, and I've verified the drive.   I've looked in the console for any error messages related to the launch of Activity Monitor and found none.  The top menu bar for the activity monitor appears, and I can select the pull-down menus.  My Macbook Air successfully upgraded to Mavericks, and the activity monitor works there.
Can anyone offer some help on this?  Thanks.

I've signed on with two different user id's and the activity monitor works perfectly.  It must be something in this particular user id.   Also, when I click on the Finder icon, the top bar greys out, but I can go to it and select "file - new finder window" and I get the finder window.  What should I look for?

  • SLOW Imac and Activity Monitor won't work

My imac has slowed down and Safari keeps crashing and everything is slow. I tried to look in Activity monitor but when I try to get in it tells my that 'Activity monitor doesn't have to correct file permissions' and to fix it with Disk Utility, so I tried that but nothing. • Activity monitor won't launch

It pops up for a second in the Dock and then disappears. Is there anyway to reinstall it? or trouble-shoot it? I repaired permissions but it didn't help.

    Hi
Create another administrator account - call it whatever you like, test will do. System Preferences > Accounts > click the plus icon. Once you've created this log out of the current account and log into the new account. Now try to see if Activity Monitor will launch. If it does not try a reinstall of the OS but preserve network users and settings. If it does launch then log out of the new admin account, log back in to the old account and move the whole of the Preferences folder in /Users/Home/Library to the Desktop. Restart the mac. On successful log in you will notice that the dock has been reset back to its default - don't worry you have not lost anything. Go to the Preferences folder you previously moved to the desktop and find the com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.dock.plist and move these two files to the newly created Preferences folder in /Users/Home/Library. If it tells you that com.apple.dock.plist already exists then overwrite it. Restart the mac again and you should now be OK.

  • Activity monitor won't work

When I try to click on it says it is damaged or incomplete. How to I fix it?
    Alison

Extract it from your computer's original disks, using Pacifist if needed, and then run the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X.

  • Activity Monitor shows virtual memory usage is way too high

35 Gb of virtual memory for Safari, Mail, iTunes, Activity Monitor and all running processes!
Why these numbers are so high compared to Tiger? Can someone please explain? Is it a bug or something or is it the new way introduced with Leopard?
RAM and CPU usage looks fine though but this VM usage seems too high to me. I will run out of disk space after a couple of days of runtime. And the Adobe Creative Suite is not even running. Jeez...

    Thanks for the hint Niel.
The /private/var/vm folder is actually only 64 Mb. I can calm myself now...
(via Go menu in the Finder, select Go to Folder and type /private/var/vm to access it)
But why is Activity Monitor behaving like this in Leopard?
