Activity Questions

Hi,
I have several questions in regards to activities and issues I am encountering as a young and learning Service Manager Back-Up Admin.
First off: I have service request templates set-up for Access Requests that encompass several applications/systems. It uses one Service request with anywhere from 4-20 Activities that are assigned to other teams that handle the specific application or system
access. The Service Request stays assigned to my Queue in the Help Desk. In these Requests, I have used Parallel Containers to have Activities go active at the same time, and then inside that container I have other Sequential Activies which contain Systems
that require more than one teams attention. My problem is, two fold.
1. My activities on the Service Request "grey out" and cannot be clicked to open the activity, once the Service Request goes to Completed Status. This is a pain, as we have to manually search the MA# when a user calls in to question an account
set-up or something. The funny thing is, on regular service requests that just have the single activity we use as default, the activity does not do this. Is there a way to set this where it will not grey out the activities and we can still double click them
to open them from the Service Request?
2. Is it in ANY WAY possible to either have activities run parallel without a parallel activity container holding them all? When I do it this way, the container becomes the parent and not the Service Request itself. My runbooks are three times as large trying
to get child activities of every Parallel and Sequential Activity on my Request to do automation on data. Also my teams are complaining because they have to click the parent link 3-5 times to get to the Service request, since I have the Activities embedded
in each other to control their flow. if I could run activities in parallel without adding a parallel container, or if I could find a setting that would ignore containers as parents, my work and my workflow would be MUCH better.
Thanks for any suggestions/help you can provide.
Just to clarify, we started this activity system for access requests because there is no easy Child-Parent relationship ability with Service Requests that could be set-up in templates. If there is a better way, I would love to hear it.

You're not alone :) Pardon the following dissertation..
Regarding your first concern, are you sure the service requests aren't closed? I just tried in my test environment..when a service request is completed, the activities are still accessible. When the service request is closed the activities are not accessible.
I'd consider it undesirable behavior. Fortunately, most undesirable behavior can be fixed with custom controls. This is the second time this week I've seen someone complain about it. I can't make any promises, but let me look inside the activity control
and see if I can build a custom control that will leave the control turned on so you can continue to open activities. If you don't want to wait for me, submit it as a bug to the Service Manager team and see if they'll fix it in an update rollup (fair warning..it
might be by design based on ITIL standards)
Regarding your second concern, there are a couple approaches you can take.
You can't run activities in parallel at the parent work item level without modifying the parent form (by replacing the default activity control with a parallel activity control). And there's no guarantee it would work anyway. The activity workflows themselves
may be tightly coupled to sequential activity behavior at the parent work item level. It would require a good bit of testing and validation and probably isn't worth pursuing.
One possible alternative would be to create a "parent work item" relationship between all activities (regardless of depth) to their parent work item (be it a service request, incident, change request, whatever). Such a feature would require a custom
workflow to generate the relationships when a work item is created. As for the form links..again, you'd have to create custom controls to apply to all activity forms that utilize that new relationship. But your runbooks would only have to get one relationship
instead of sifting through 2, 3, or 4 levels worth of child activities.
As for building a child-parent relationship ability with service requests, you could do it in a template..but you'd have to do it in the management pack itself. Basically, you'd create a new service request in your template that contains an activity that's
related to a particular "dependent work item" activity in your main service request template. Ultimately, your template would be a web of activities and sub service requests with their own activities. The out of the box request offering engine isn't
really built for it..so it would be tricky (if at all possible) to make sure the main request offering input is copied to all the necessary service requests in the template. I've never tried it, but it might be possible..and again, you'd have to do it in the
MP..the console just isn't sophisticated enough to do half the stuff that management packs can do. Note that this approach would likely create "service request sprawl" whereas your activities are clearly organized and grouped right now.
The easiest alternative would be to copy all important data from the parent service request down to the individual activities. In this way, the users wouldn't have to find the parent service request..everything they need is right on their activity's description.
A custom workflow or runbook could accomplish that and would be a lot easier than the template fiasco I mentioned in the last paragraph. You would have to be careful about changes made at the parent service request..your workflow/runbook would have to update
the child activities anytime important information was changed at the parent level.
To close out this novel, I'll look into the activity thing and see if I can't tweak the form behavior. Again..no promises..theoretically, it'll work..but reality and theory don't always get along.

  • Photoshop Activation Question

    Hi,
Sorry in advance if this has been asked before...
I think the EULA for CS3 allows for installing CS3 on 2 machines as long as the 2 installations of CS3 aren't being used at the same time. When I go to install it on my 2nd PC, when it comes to Activation, it says I've maxed out my Activations.  Am I supposed to keep Deactivating from one PC and Re-Activate on the 2nd PC each time I want to use it?
I really don't think I ever installed CS3 on any other of my machines, or if I ever did I know I uninstalled it, because I don't have CS3 anywhere, except for one PC.
    Any help appreciated!

  • Office 2013 Volume License Activation question

    Hello,
we have software assurance, so MAK and KMS are available for O2013.
I cannot use KMS server (there are reasons for now). So I have to use MAK. I know that it is possible later on to convert MAK to KMS.
I found topic about ADBA. But missing few points from the description after my 2 questions.
    1. Can I use KMS key for use with Volume Activation Tool without actually having KMS installed?
    2.  at the end it says just 180 days activation. What will happen then?
    From:
    http://searchenterprisedesktop.techtarget.com/tip/Using-Active-Directory-activation-and-other-new-Office-2013-tools
-------Prior to Office 2013, IT had to rely on Multiple Activation Key (MAK) or Key Management Service (KMS) activation. These processes were generally more complex than ADBA. Little has changed with either MAK or KMS in Office 2013. With ADBA, however,
    IT can easily
activate Office 2013 clients through their connections to the domain.
To implement ADBA, administrators must use the Volume Activation Tools utility, which walks them through the setup process. After admins supply the KMS host key, the setup process adds an activation object to the
Active Directory Domain Services. The activation object uses the same Generic Volume Licenses Key (GVLK) and KMS host pair as that for regular KMS activation. When the client joins the domain, the activation object automatically activates the Office installation,
granting a license to the client for 180 days. --------------

Q1) there is a KMShost product key, and there is a KMSclient product key.
The KMShost product key, you install this in your KMShost machine, and the client machines which have the KMSclient product key will contact your KMShost machine for activation.
Volume Licensed products are provided by MSFT with the KMSclient product key already installed. The KMSclient product keys are also publically available in the TechNet library documentation.
VAMT can be used, with or without KMS installed. VAMT is not part of KMS, and, KMS is not part of VAMT.
ADBA is not part of VAMT and VAMT is not part of ADBA.
ADBA can only be used if your AD is at the later version, and, ADBA only works for the latest products like Windows8 and Office2013.
If you have older AD or older products you will still need to have KMS or MAK.
Q2) after 180days, it's the same as KMS - the KMSclient (or ADBA client) will enter "non-genuine" mode if the client has not contacted ADBA object (or KMShost) to renew the activation status.
This wiki article I put together, includes a few helpful links about ADBA and KMS:

  • FamilyTalk and Activation Questions

I've got a question about the activation. It seems that Apple/AT&T made it very easy to activate an iPhone for a single user, but they haven't said much about the FamilyTalk plans. If I were to open up a new AT&T FamilyTalk plan with an iPhone and a plain old Nokia phone would I still be able to activate the iPhone in iTunes? I'm not sure how it would work because the other phone on the FamilyTalk plan would have been activated in the store when I opened the account; so I think that makes me an existing customer by the time I leave the store. The options under "I am an existing customer" in the iPhone activation pane in iTunes are as follows: "replace a phone on my account with this iPhone," and "add a new line to my existing account." Regarding the second option, could this existing account be the FamilyTalk account that I just opened at the store, and then would iTunes allow me to make the iPhone the second (and last) phone on this new FamilyTalk plan?
So in short, I want a FamilyTalk plan for two phones, one of them not being an iPhone. Will iTunes/AT&T allow me to activate the iPhone as the second phone in that plan?

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot do this. You just need to discuss it with customer service at ATT. No one here can do it for you. Itunes only activates the phone, ATT is the one who does the billing and the plans. It should be quite easy.

  • Home Activation Question

I just recently pre-ordered an iPhone 4 to be shipped to my house. I used another person's upgrade on my account and was wondering if the iPhone will come specifically for that number, or can I choose which number I want when I activate in iTunes? I am trying to avoid a trip to the AT&T Store and have never done home activation.
If anyone can let me know that would be great! Thanks.

I did this when I got the 3g iphone 2 years ago....I took my husbands upgrade since I wasn't due for one yet. It can be done but it's a huge pain....and yes, it will come specifically for the other persons number. You'll need to take it in to an AT&T store because, yes, you can swap the sim chips if you have a 3g sim chip....if there isn't a new sim for the new iphone. They have to internally switch this information in your at&t account. Only a person with an iphone can get an iphone data package....which would be the other person, so your sim would be charged per use for the internet. So they need to internally change this info that YOU have the iphone and not the other person so you can get the data package. Plus there was something about the IMEI number of the phone....sorry it's a very complicated process thats hard to explain but there is a lot more to it than just switching out the sim. AT&T even screwed my account up with this swap and I ended up with a $600 bill on my first bill (they later corrected the problem and waived all the fees that i wasn't supposed to be charged for). So, unfortunately you'll probably end up going in to have this done. You can try calling them and see if they can help you over the phone first.
And don't let them tell you that it can't be done! I did it, but I've had several AT&T employees tell me that it's impossible and can't be done and basically called me a liar to my face. If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected] and I can try to answer based my on my experience.

  • Multi-"Machine" Activation Question:  Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I am developing plugins and have the need to test with a wide range of Photoshop versions on a wide range of operating systems.
At the moment I'm accomplishing this through the use of VMware virtual machines.  I have a powerful 64 bit host workstation running Vista x64 and have created virtual machines for XP Pro, Vista 32 bit, Win7 RC, and Win7 retail.  Virtualization saves me from having to build a lab full of test hardware.
I have the desire to test with versions 6 through CS4...  I haven't yet gone through the process of installing all the versions of Photoshop on all these VMs; just a few, which is probably covered under the 2 activations limit...  My question is this:
Will Adobe consider it a separate activation for each virtual machine?  Can they be "sweet talked" into allowing more?  I am running them all on one computer, and (generally speaking) using only one at a time.
From what I can see the software will not realize this is one and the same computer, since the virtualization environment does a good job of convincing the OS that it's a completely separate computer...  I suppose I will forge ahead and call Adobe...  Adobe phone contact is not touted to be much of an easy or rewarding thing from what I hear.
Any advice on how to proceed with setting up a decent testing environment to support long-term multi-platform testing would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

  • VMM IP Activity Question

I am trying to automate my server deployment process using Orchestrator 2012 R2 and VMM 2012 R2 UR1 with a VMWare backend.  Currently I have the template imported from VMWare, which contains the customizations for a dynamic name, domain join, and
IP pool resources, as specified in the VMM template settings.  Deploying the template from the VMM console works great.  My issue comes in when I try to use SCORCH 2012 R2 the “Create VM From Template” activity errors, (Windows could not parse or
process the unattend answer file for pass specialize), out during the customization phase when I do not specify a specific computer name or use the “*”.  When I do specify a specific computer name it will work, but fails to do the other customizations
that are included in the Guest OS Profile portion and the Hardware Profile of the template.  I have added the other optional fields in the activity, and the basic ones work, besides the Guest  OS Profile piece and Hardware Profiles.  The Guest
OS Profile and Hardware Profile usually error and shut down the VM, or they timeout.  Based on the reading on the TechNet articles this activity is supposed to act just like deploying a VM from the VMM console.
My questions are has anyone else ran into this issues, if so what kind of work around is possible, or have I misinterpreted this and the activity is meant to build its own VM based on the optional settings provided in the activity?

  • IPhone Activation Questions

I'm highly considering getting an iPhone this weekend. However, I have a question as to getting a new phone number. When you activate online, I'm guessing that you are able to choose an area code and location for you phone number. But, I'm just asking for definite clarification. Thanks in advance

Yes you can, but it has to match your billing/residential/credit check address.
That is - if you are at home, and you have ATT coverage in your area, then you select your area code and address (I believe they assign it via zip code).
On the other hand, if you are on vacation, for example, you can activate it while away on vacation, but it has to be activated to your home zip code/matching area code.
A third example -- if you live in an area that does not have ATT coverage, but try to activate it to a neighboring city or state that does have ATT coverage, it will not assign a number to you and your activaton will be denied.
In other words, it is tied to your legal billing address.

  • Iphone 5 activation question

    Hello-
My sister bought me the 5 under her upgrade and it should be here tomorrow! My only question is, when I go to activate it, will it be attached to her phone number? What steps would I have to take to make sure that the phone goes directly to my number? Should I go to a store to do so?
    Thanks!

Yes there are one of two ways in which can activate the phone over to your line.
The first of which is to go into your Verizon store and let them give you another sims card which will be directly tied to your phone.
The second is to do what they call aging the sims card....
In order to do this you will need to log into My Verizon and activate the 5 on the line in which the phone was ordered. After this is done you'll need to then, on the very same line that you have activated the 5, you will need to then activate another phone on this line which in turn will deactivate the 5 from this line. Afterwards you then need to wait 24 hours in which time the sims card will be going through the aging process. Following the 24 hours of having the 5 not activated you will then be able to go into the Verizon wireless site and activate the 5 onto your line. By the way if you have no other phone in which to place on the extra line you can call Verizon customer service and they can assign a dummy esn towards the extra phone line. Also after all this is done, unless someone is going to use the extra line you can always go into the online account and suspend that number for up to 90 days.
    Hope this helps you out!!!!

  • KDE Activity Question

I just retried KDE and found it's activity feature which is really amazing. I found a couple of problems though, one was that after I logged back in one of my activities had been duplicated many times but each one was empty. I found a bug report on that though.
Another question I have is about the closing activities. I understand that when an activity is close all its programs are closed. However, some programs aren't closed even if they are only on that one activity (They are running in the background when the activity is closed, I first noticed it by the way it was instantly resumed). The only consistent example I have right now is monodevelop, but I think one of my web browsers did it too. Is this actually a feature for programs that aren't integrated well so that you do not lose your state? Is there a way to change it? Or is it just a bug? The largest reason I would want to change this is because I might close my activity, which is to be resumed later, then restart my computer. The other reason is that if it's a large program I don't want it running in the background.

jayson_r wrote:Yes, I read it - that's where I picked up that 'kde-meta' keeps up with new packages added to KDE. I guess the point of my question is, if I install kde-meta now, after having installed KDE, will it work the same way, and/or break anything in the future?
    Short answer: yes.
Long answer: package management isn't all too complicated, you can read up in the wiki and man pages for pacman about it. Order of installation should not usually matter except in special cases (of course, dependencies are needed before the packages which depend on them).

  • ASA 8.4 transparent mode active/active questions

Hi, currently i'm trying to create network design which uses two 5585-X in transparent mode with active/active load balancing (with states), but i have some questions:
    1. Do i need to configure asr-groups in transparent mode? What will happen if my packet (or now more accurately frame) will return to the standby context of one device, while the initial packet passed through active context on the another device (contexts are in the same group but on different physical devices)?
    2. In 8.4 we received new feature called BVI interfaces. How this feature integrates with failover functionality? Can we now use multiple BVI bridge groups for multiple vlans (instead of bridging a single pair of vlans in single context)?
    3. When implementing active/active load balancing with BVIs do we still need to use multiple context mode?
    Thanks for your replies

    Hello,
    1. Do i need to configure asr-groups in transparent mode? What will happen if my packet (or now more accurately frame) will return to the standby context of one device, while the initial packet passed through active context on the another device (contexts are in the same group but on different physical devices)?
You only need to configure ASR groups if your routing environment would match the scenario you outlined (a return packet arrives at the unit running the Standby context).
    2. In 8.4 we received new feature called BVI interfaces. How this feature integrates with failover functionality? Can we now use multiple BVI bridge groups for multiple vlans (instead of bridging a single pair of vlans in single context)?
You can configure up to 8 bridge groups per context to achieve this.
    3. When implementing active/active load balancing with BVIs do we still need to use multiple context mode?
Active/Active failover is only possible in multiple context mode.
    Hope that helps.

  • New user - Bionic 16 GB activation questions - please help

Sorry to be clueless, but this is my first smartphone and only my 3rd cell in 10 years.
Studying the info online and with the booklet enclosed in the box,  I'm fairly certain that I'm supposed to insert the SIM card, then the battery, and lastly charge the phone.
What is NOT addressed is : do I activate the phone first, or only after it is fully charged?? It's a new line on an existing plan.
Never had a SIM card before, and always had it activated in store before, but got this one from verizon online store.
Having been phoneless for 2 weeks (long dramatic story) I would really like to do this properly.
    Thanks for any help.
    Dawn

    Thank you, Ann154!
So - put in the SIM, put in the battery, attach back cover, fully charge the phone, turn it on and it will begin to activate.
Then, once the phone is powered up, I do everything else following the on-screen prompts on the new phone?
Looking at the paperwork again , it also looks like the very first thing  I have to do is call to activate the SIM card?  One paper in the box shows as call 877-807-4646 from any phone and follow prompts..... or is it better to call customer service/ tech support?
I feel like these are silly questions, but with the first phone I signed on with (Droid Charge),  I spent all day on the phone with 2 techs and an in-store person after trying to activate the card and  the phone at home. Phone kept saying the SIM card was unreadable, they swapped the SIM card out and finally decided it was the phone so I sent it back and they somehow managed to cancel everything and not send the replacement phone, so I called the guy back I signed up with in the beginning and started all over. This is why I'm nervous verging on paranoid!!

  • Activation question??

ok so my family is finally making the switch from sprint to ATT with 3 iPhones (and another phone for my younger brother) We all have separate computers so my questions is:
can i activate my iPhone on my computer (creating an ATT account) and then right away move to my mothers computer and activate hers to the family plan and so forth.
or do i activate them all on one computer and then plug the phones in to do the syncing into there personal computers?

It shouldn't matter what computers you activate your iphones on. I was actually in the same boat as you we had 3 of us that switched from sprint to ATT for the iPhone. As long as you set up an account on one computer you should be able to activate the others on different computers(as long as they have the latest version of iTunes). It is also important to know that if one of those computers has a USB 1.1 port and not 2.0 it may be difficult to activate and/or sync as some people experience trouble with that.

  • Activation question: Lightroom

If I deactivate LR CC on my computer #1 so that I can activate it on computer #3 Will I be able to reactivate it on #1 whenever I want in the future (even multiple times) as long as I deactivate it on another computer so that I only have it on 2 at a time. Or once I deactivate it from Computer #1 will on not be allowed to reactivate it on that one again?@

There is no activation mechanism in Lightroom.
You can install, uninstall and re-install it as many times as you like.
The onus is on you to abide by the license agreement and only install it on a maximum of two computers at the same time - only using it on one computer at a time.
