*Added* code to existing source file, compiled it, and class file shrunk

Another newbie here. Fortunately, my classpath is ok, so I'm able to compile a .java file.
I added one line of code (System.out.println) to write the value of a variable to a log. After compiling with javac, I noticed that the resulting [new] class file was smaller than the existing class file. I looked at each of the class files with Textpad. It's gibberish, but I quickly saw that a large block of code was missing in the new class file, even though the size of the source file had been increased.
There is a difference, however, between how the two class files were created. The existing class file was compiled (along with many others) by exporting an .EAR file from a development environment (WSAD) to the WebSphere Administrator Console. Conversely, I am now compiling the same source file with javac on my machine.
I suspect that this is the reason why I can add code to a .java file, compile it, and have the resulting class file actually lose code. Even if I am correct, I don't know what to do about it.
Does anyone have an idea?

Daniel T.

Thank you both for your replies. I've read many posts over the past few months, and I know how important it is to provide as much info as possible, when asking a question here. That said, I have another tasty tidbit...
After replacing the existing (larger) class file with the new (smaller) class file, my application now produces this:
"*Error 500: LinkageError while defining class*..." [name of class]
*"...(Unsupported major.minor version 50.0) This is often caused by having a class defined at multiple locations within the classloader hierarchy. Other potential causes include compiling against an older or newer version of the class that has an incompatible method signature. Dumping the current context classloader hierarchy: ==> indicates defining classloader ==>[0] com.ibm.ws.classloader.CompoundClassLoader@6bd156d5 Local ClassPath:"*
...[the entire classpath]...
Original exception--- java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError:
I'm guessing that my focus should mostly be on the 'Original exception', and maybe I need to revisit the JRE or JDK or JVM (these terms are somewhat nebulous to me, so please forgive me using them interchangeably) on my machine. For now, I'll just keep trying stuff. Thanks again for the replies!

Daniel T.

Right I have to Open Flash 8 to perform this and copy the SWF

We use an enhanced version of Flash Command internally, of

    private class test

    -Compile it.... You must have

    xxx
    abc

    private
    Do you have any justification?

    Hmm,
I've been working with different versions of jdk since, if I'm not mistaken, jdk1.0.6 and never was able to get *.class with compilation errors. It was true for Windows*, Linux, and Solaris*.
About the 'private'/'protected' modifier for the type (class) - it makes perfect sence not to allow it there: why would anyone want to create a type if no one can access it? There should be a reason for restricting your types - let's say, any inner class can be private/protected.
For ex., you shouldn't have compile problems with this:
    class Test
    public static void main(String s[])
    System.out.println("Hello!How are You!!");
    private class ToTest{}
Sorry, but I don't really know where you can read up on that.

  • Verifying .java and .class files match

I have a bit of a strange situation in a team-working environment where many developers copy code to a production server. None of this code is in a Version Control System and I have been given the task of getting it into one (I've chosen Subversion, but that isnt important)
The problem is, its not as simple as doing a full commit of the production server because developers may have copied edited .class files onto the server, but not copied edited .java (therefore the .java file is not the same as the .class file)
Because the server has hundreds (if not thousands) or java and class files, I cant just decompile each of the class files and manually see if they match the java files, so I'm asking, is there a tool that can verify a java file matches a class file of the same name in terms of version (or if not is there an easier way of doing it than the decompile method)?
    Thanks in advance

Years ago I had to do something very much like this...and now I'm trying to recall how we did it (and for that matter whether it worked)...and I'm having trouble recalling. Ah, that's what happens when you read forums out of insomnia.
Of course, you can do a baseline check by just checking the file timestamps. Also instead of decompiling the class files you can try re-compiling the source code, and then generating checksums on both class files to see if they're the same.
You might be able to use BCEL (http://jakarta.apache.org/bcel/) to extract some useful information out of the class files. As I recall I tried this but the data wasn't useful for this kind of project, but maybe I'm misremembering. It's worth looking into.

  • When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"?

When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"? IE always saved photos in the "Photos" file and documents in the "Documents" file. Firefox makes me choose every time. Very annoying.

How about if Firefox is programmed like IE in this ONE thing...
When saving files from internet sources, if the file ends in a typical photo extension such as .jpg, .bmp, .tif etc. it defaults to save it in your PHOTOS folder.
When saving anything like a .doc, .pdf etc. it defaults to save it to your DOCUMENTS.
You could still change it to 'desktop' if that if really where you want all your photos and documents... or some other folder that you decide, but DEFAULTS to the LOGICAL folder.
I have carpal tunnel SO bad that even typing this suggestion is painful and having to make the extra click along with moving the mouse EVERY time I want to save something is painful.
ALSO, I shouldn't need a bunch of ADDONS to accomplish this. I tried downloading one and it did nothing. The problem still exists.

  • Multiple palette files in a library/class file causes problems

While developing a labview class, I wanted to set the default palette, so I added the relevant dir.mnu file to the class. Unfortunately, the class already had a dir.mnu file in it. On adding the file, I got some error message about a dependency change*(which makes no sesne, how can a palette file have any dependencies !). On saving the class and then attempting to reopen it, LabVIEW claims it is corrupt. Inspecting the xml .lvclass files reveals that when I added the new paletee file, LabVIEW actually just added a second reference to the palette file already in the project, which it then considers to be a problem when it tries loading the class. This is clearly a bug on a number of levels:
It should not be possible for the user to induce LabVIEW to create corrupt xml files through such simple attempts to use documented features.
The underlying problem is that LabVIEW appears to be using the conventional search/linking rules to load library items irrespective of whether they are a vi (which should ahve a unique name) or other file (which might well be legitimately non-unique).
Given the near impossibility of renaming a palette file without breaking palette links this particular bug is extra annoying.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry for the delay, it took me a little longer to reproduce the problem systematically. Attached are three zip files of the same trivial class. The only difference between them is the contents of the class file itself.
The key point is that I have two folders in my class - Public and Protected (although I haven't actually set the access scope I realise). Each folder has a dir.mnu file in it and there is also a dir.mnu file in the main class folder. The class virtual folder structure maps directly to the on disc version.
In the first zip file the dir.mnu files are not added to the class.
In the second zip dile I added the dir.mnu by right clicking and doing Add file...  This is allowed because each dir.mnu has a distinct path. I then save the class file and close it.
To get the third zip file, I reopen the class file. I  get a single dependency warning about dir.mnu in one of the sub folders. So I think "fine ok, somethign funny about that dir.mnu file" - note if I'm loading a whole heirarchy of classes I may be told LabVIEW is laoding the dir.mnu file from somewhere completely different in my class structure. I then save the class file to give the thrid zip file.
The lvclass file in the third zip file is corrupt because it has multiple entries for the same file, because it didn't handle having more than 2 items conflicting.
The correct behaviour would be not to invoke the conflicting item names for non vi/ctl document types. I could imagine that there would be similar problems if I had a say a whole range of say README.html files strewn over the place.

    Samia,
It would probably be best to rewrite your application to take advantage
of the 8.1 versions of Weblogic authentication and Portal property
    management.
    In 8.1 Portal :
    1. has an Authentication class where we basically use
    weblogic.servlet.security.ServletAuthentication.weak(username, password,
    request).
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wlp/docs81/javadoc/com/bea/p13n/security/Authentication.html
    2. has a AtnManagerProxy class where we check user existence and member
of, have methods to add remove users and groups, etc.
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wlp/docs81/javadoc/com/bea/p13n/security/management/authentication/AtnManagerProxy.html
    3. has a LdapPropertyManager EJB which is configurable through the
    p13n_ejb.jar deployment descriptors (ejb-jar.xml and
weblogic-ejb-jar.xml) for retrieving user properties from an LDAP
    Directory Server.
In 7.0+ and 8.1 Weblogic Server a new more flexible security provider
framework was added to permit more flexible use of multiple security
stores, perimeter authentication, and role mapping.

  • Very high log file sequential read and control file sequential read waits?

I have a 10.2.0.4 database and have 5 streams capture processes running to replicate data to another database. However I am seeing very high
log file sequential read and control file sequential read by the capture procesess. This is causing slowness in the database as the databass is wasting so much time on these wait events. From AWR report
    Elapsed: 20.12 (mins)
    DB Time: 67.04 (mins)
and From top 5 wait events
Event Waits Time(s) Avg Wait(ms) % Total Call Time Wait Class
    CPU time 1,712 42.6
    log file sequential read 99,909 683 7 17.0 System I/O
    log file sync 49,702 426 9 10.6 Commit
    control file sequential read262,625 384 1 9.6 System I/O
    db file sequential read 41,528 378 9 9.4 User I/O
Oracle support hasn't been of much help, other than wasting my 10 days and telling me to try this and try that.
Do you have streams running in your environment, are you experiencing this wait. Have you done anything to resolve these waits..
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums.
There is insufficient information in what you have posted to know that your analysis of the situation is correct or anything about your Streams environment.
We don't know what you are replicating. Not size, not volume, not type of capture, not rules, etc.
We don't know the distance over which it is being replicated ... 10 ft. or 10 light years.
We don't have any AWR or ASH data to look at.
etc. etc. etc. If this is what you provided Oracle Support it is no wonder they were unable to help you.
To diagnose this problem, if one exists, requires someone on-site or with a very substantial body of data which you have not provided. The first step is to fill in the answers to all of the obvious first level questions. Then we will likely come back with a second level of questioning.
But when you do ... do not post here. Your questions are not "Database General" they are specific to Streams and there is a Streams forum specifically for them.
    Thank you.

  • Could not find .java and .class files...

I am working on Windows Vista operating system.
I am able to access the .java which I created and also .class files from the command prompt.
But I am not able to find those files in the bin folder in Windows Explorer.
I want to delete some .java and .class files. When I use the delete command on the command prompt , I am getting ---- could not find the file.
    Can anyone help me...

    Hey everyone,
    I found the answer!
If the command prompt application is run as administrator(since it is windows vista), the created .java files as well as .class files will be stored and can be seen in the bin folder.
However, I could not locate the .java files (and also corresponding .class files) which I created previously.

Thanks for your suggestions. I checked to see if the options you suggested were set incorrectly but they were set to sync all. This led me to think the problem was actually in the iphone. I re-initialized the iphone and did not allow the system to restore any of the previous settings. In essence, I forced the phone to reset to factory settings. Then my video podcasts started syncing. All is well now. I did notice that I had seven podcasts selected that were "HD" presentations, and as such, are not compatible with the iphone. I don't know if this had anything to do with my earlier situation, but now I'm getting the video podcasts automatically. I'm happy. It wasn't much fun forcing the iphone to forget all of my preferences and I'm still customizing the phone now several days later. I think I have everything working and back to normal except I haven't identified any of my email accounts as of yet. Thanks for your help.

My mac is converting Word and Excel files into Pages and Numbers files when I click to open them from an email. Downloading them and opening them doesn't help. How do I make this stop? I don't use iLife and don't want to; my clients are using Office and it's easier for me, except when I have to copy and paste everything they send me from an iLife file back to Word and Excel. • Jars and .class files - security of the source code

    Hi,
I have an app that is in a jar file with the .class files (so no source code).
I'm wondering how difficult it is to attain the source code from these .class files in my jar? Looking through the contents of the .class files it seems there is a large amount of readable text. For example I see method names, variables, etc.
This leads me to believe these jars are not secure. What is a better way?
    Thanks!
    Edit:
Looking around, I've noticed many java decompilers and Sun even supports a dissembler - javap. I think this is not cool, haha.
What way can I protect my code? To me, the value of java just went way down due to the ease at attaining source code (based on what I read in the past hour or so. I have yet to try it myself). I wonder if this impacts companies reasons not to use java?
    Edit 2:
I heard that there may be a way to make the jar closed, so you can't say, use winrar, to extract the class files. Does anyone know anything about this?

You can use tools called obfuscators to make decompiling more difficult, which is usually good enough. The truth is, no matter how great you think your code is, it's of a lot less interest to others than you actually think. Unless you've got a particularly sexy argorithm or something, it's not really worth worrying too much about

  • JSP precompilation and my .java files compilation issues /  building WAR file using ANT

    Hello.
I am new to working with WAR files and the whole process of it. A little
background on what we are using. We are using, WLS 6.1 SP3. I am using the
ant.bat that is supplied in the bin directory of the WLS install.
I am trying to work with ANT and getting it to build the file. I am making
progress, but at a point where I am having trouble getting my java code
files to compile using ant. I am having one issue and looking to do one
    other item.
    1) I would like to precompile the JSPs if possible prior to putting into the
WAR file. Not sure if this is done or not, but there was a utility when I
was working with ibm's app server that gave us the ability to do a batch
complile. Was thinking that maybe a similair concept is possibly here.
    2) Having issue getting ant to compile code properly. In the compile
section of the build.xml file for ant, I tell it where the source files are,
and the destionation folder for the compiled class files. I then try to set
the classpath so that it finds the .jar files that are necessary for my
source files to complile. But, it won't find them. And not sure how come.
I may be going about this all wrong, but dont know. Here is the compile
section of the build.xml I am using:
    <target name="compile" depends="prepare">
    <javac srcdir="classes" destdir="${deploy.home}/WEB-INF/classes"
    classpath="$(lib.home)"
    debug="on" optimize="on" deprecation="off"/>
    </target>
One note, I've tried many different items in the classpath line, which
don't work. if I do *.jar it fails at complie time, invalid argument. As
well as if I use *.* and so on. if I list the explicit file names, it still
    doesn't seem to find them.
I was wondering if anyone could help, if you need anymore information let me
know, I can send the entire build.xml if necessary. I may be missing
items, seeing that this is my first try at using ANT.
Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance. Hopefully not sounding too
off the wall. Hopefully get some clarification and understanding.
    Thank you.
    Kevin.

You can configure WebLogic Server to precompile your JSPs when a Web

by setting the precompile parameter to true in the <jsp-descriptor>
element of the weblogic.xml deployment descriptor.

    Thank you.
    Kevin.

  • J2EE .class file compiling for jar, ear files.

I know that using the former Sun/present Oracle .class java source code compiler,
I create a platform independet class file which can be used by the java language
on any OS environment with the appropriate Java Runtime Environment installed.
I know that there are obfuscation tools available to prevent the .class file decompilation
    related issues.
I have also been using the GNU gcj compiler with great success. However,
I havn't been able to find a non-commercial purchase compiler that can create
.class files, with the same platform independence, but that can't be easily decompiled
based on the simple content in .class files. Can someone point me to someone on the net
for a free for commercial development java compiler, past about 1.5.X ?

If it were possible, don't you think Oracle would have built the compiler like that themselves?
