Adding 2nd Optical Drive into Mac Pro (first gen) makes both unusable!

Hey all,
I recently purchased a second DVD drive to go into my first gen Mac Pro 2.66Ghz.
The installation went a little rough, although OK in the end. The IDE cable seemed reluctant to want to stay in a safe place.
Upon booting however, and now had no optical drives installed!
Even System Profiler reported no disc burning capabilities except my external USB CD Burner.
I've taken the second Optical Drive out, which by the way was one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/SHS202NBLS/
My original Sony (Disguised NEC drive) drive is now working again, although what on earth happened?
Should I try swapping the drives around? E.g the Sony on the bottom and Samsung on top?
Any thoughts would be appreciated,
Thanks,

I have an idea,
Perhaps the newer DVD Drive I have here is "better" than the currently installed one, and therefore doesn't like being connected as the slave (bottom) to the "weaker" master (top) drive?
Could it be something like that?

  • Install 2nd DVD Drive in Mac Pro 1,1 or 3,1

Would anyone have info on installing a 2nd optical drive in either the 1st-Generation or 3rd Generation Mac Pro?   Seems ticky to open the optical compartment open.  Thanks.

The instructions can be found here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA177/en_US/MacPro_OpticalDrive_DIY.pdf
Edit: Note, you need to remove the bezel off of the drive drawer before installing. And make sure you keep the latch on the back of the computer in the up position, it locks the drive carrier in place when in the down position. It can take some wiggling and effort to get the drive carrier out.

how to install hard drive into mac pro

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.
I hope this makes sense! Your help is much appreciated!

  • Adding optical drive to Mac Pro

I have added RAM & hard drives to my Mac Desktops, including the Mac Pro, but have never messed with the optical drive.
Recently, I decided that I would like to have a second CD/DVD RW drive in the Mac Pro. I have two questions:
1 - can someone recommend a good internal CD/DVD RW drive for the Mac Pro? I mainly do audio CDs, occasionally DVDs, do not need Blu-Ray as of yet.
2 - is there a visual guide for installing an optical drive? If it's as easy as inserting hard drives, it should be a piece of cake.
    thanks!

Be sure to get a drive that uses ATA, such as the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D, not SATA. You need to remove the tray lip.

Apple provides the mounting screws. They are on the back of the metal drive holder. Set the drive jumper to CS (Cable Select). Be careful when putting the drive holder back into the Mac Pro, so you don't nick or pinch any cables.
Eject will open the upper drive. Option-Eject will open the lower drive.

  • Adding 2nd optical drive

I want to add a specific optical drive to my Mac Pro. It's an early Mac Pro 2.0 quad core intel, the first generation I believe. The optical drive is a Plextor Premium 2 which has an IDE connection. I've heard mixed info about weather the first Mac Pro's were IDE or something else as far as the optical drives go.
Does anybody have any solid info for me?
I know I could mount it in an external firewire enclosure if it comes down to it, but it'd be great to be able to mount it in my Mac Pro.
    Thanks.

Using the SATA slot as opposed to the other IDE was an idea for two people who wanted to burn two discs at once with more speed than usual. The diagram here should show you where things need to be, (it's the right angled connector with the pink flash on it-next to where it says ODD SATA).
    If you do choose to fit one, get a small phillips screwdriver and a 300mm at least right angled to flat SATA lead, then you'll need to;
First get an IDE to SATA power adaptor lead. You'll need it to plug the original power lead into.
Then, remove the fans and memory cover, or as much as you need so you can get your hands in comfortably.
plug the right angled end into the mother board an thread the rest of the cable up behind the drive caddies………
The rest should be self explanatory.

  • Install external drive into mac pro

I have stored my itunes library on an external hard drive and now that i have purchased a mac pro i would like to install the external hard drive into the mac pro and continue to use the drive for the library. The external drive is a deskstar in an enclosure that i can just slide it out of so i can install it in the mac pro. Will this work or is there a better way?

Turn off the option in the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences to copy the files to the iTunes music folder, and then drag the folder into the open iTunes window. This will not preserve playlists and other metadata.

  • Adding new hard drive to Mac Pro (quad core)

I've just ordered a new Mac Pro quad core (2.66 GHz) with one GB HD. Since Apple is charging £240 for a second drive I decided to get it from somewhere else. I found a 1GB Western Digital Caviar Green but I also noticed 1GB WD Caviar Black. I wonder if anybody has any experience of those drives and would they work with the latest Mac Pro ?
Does anybody knows what make of drive is Apple using in their latest Mac Pros ?

For me, the best place for any type of upgrade on your Mac Pro 1,1 (mine is a 2.66) is at Other World Computing.
The only video card available from OWC is the ATI Radeon 5770 HD.

  • I must be going nuts...adding 2nd optical drive

    Hey folks,
wondering if you can help me out:
mdd g4 1.25 - superdrive working fine...want to add another into 2nd bay.
followed instructions in manual, but I wanted to add the 2nd drive to the ata-66 bus.
The problem is that I can't see where the ata-66 bus is on the logic board.
I can see the ata-33 connections right near the front HD chassis (which has 1 HD in it).
is there a website or document which explains what is on the logic board or maybe someone has directions on how to do this.
i'm feeling frustrated b/c i'm not a complete dolt, but i can't figure this one out....
    Cheers,
    Keebler

    Hi Forrest,
Ok. I think i'm almost there I see the ata-33 and ata-66 connectors. i also see the connector (assuming it's ata-100) from which I have 2 hds connected to it in the rear carrier.
In the front carrier, I have 1 hd connected to the ata-66.
i see the ata-33 goes underneath the optical carrier and loops behind to connect both opticals.
i did that and the g4 recognized them so that's a wuhoo, BUT i would like to put them on seperate
bus' so I can burn 2 dvds at once (I was told doing so would be better for data transfer while burning and keeping them on the same would result in poor burn speeds).
    thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Keebler
PS. i could take pics if it would help?

  • Adding non mac drives to Mac Pro

Please forgive me if this has been answered somewhere already. I've tried searching and I can't seem to find the answer. I am trying to help my nephew order a new Mac Pro on a budget. As I understand it, the Apple branded drives for Mac Pro come with some sort of holder which allows the drive to slide into the bay. Is this holder included in the case or is there any way to buy one for use with a third party drive?

There are trays for four drives, you don't need to purchase any (unless you want spares for more than four drives).
    Any SATA drive will work.
I'm not even sure if there is such a thing as Apple-branded which usually would mean specialized firmware only. Physically all drives are just standard drives.
Do make sure though that your nephew is prepared to have a couple (2) of backup drives and maybe a data drive. Having an emergency boot drive plus a bootable backup of the system should never be ignored or skipped.
TransIntl sells extra trays for $29 or 2 for $49, though I don't think you'll need any. For now
300 and 500GB drives go for $68-168 looking at Maxtor Maxline III 300 to WD RE2 500. With MaxLine Pro 500 in-between or WD RE 320, both around $110-120.

  • Old hard drive, new Mac Pro?

My G5 power supply died so I bought a new Mac Pro. Can I install the old G5 hard drive into my new mac pro and boot up??
    Thanks, beth

If you have a G5 that uses SATA drive then you can install it however you will not be able to boot from it. If you have a PATA drive then you can always install it in the 2nd optical drive bay but you need tohe right brackets to have it secure.

  • Install Mac Mini harddrive into Mac Pro?

Hi all! Any idea if it would be possible to psychally take my hard drive out of my mini and install it into an empty hard drive bay in the mac pro? Im going to keep my mini around for backup and this would be the most ideal way to use it.

Ultimately it depends on which mac mini you're talking about. The older PowerPC version had PATA drives where the newer Intel ones have SATA drives.
Placing either drive type into an external enclosure is the recommended course of action.
However, if you are talking about a PATA drive you can in fact install it into the free 2nd optical drive bay. You will need to get a 2.5" to 3.5" drive conversion kit (it's really a simple bridge board that additionally allows the use of the 3.5" power cable) and the mounting may be rather tricky due to the short cables although it'll go into that space without a problem.

  • XP Hardrive into Mac Pro 2.66?

I have just gotten a Mac Pro 2.66 and have a pc with XP. My question is can I take that harddrive out and install it on the mac then use bootcamp. Or do I have to partition my drive and get a new copy of XP?

Well… that's a bit of a tricky question. The problem with Windows XP is that the installation in not universal like Mac OS X and does tend to vary based on the hardware you have.
I would probably just try it and see what happens. Worst case is it doesn't work although you never know, it just might. An OS repair from the original XP installation disc may also be required to fix any problems that you might come across along with a subsquent software update (using Windows Update).
Be aware that an IDE/PATa drive will require mounting in the 2nd optical drive bay. It, even with the right equipment, is a fiddly job so be sure you're prepared for mounting difficulties.

  • How to reformat a hard drive in Mac Pro

    Hello,
I know how to do the whole disk utility thing to reformat it but can I just plug the hard drive right into the bay in the computer and run disk utility?

Well, I would recommend shutting down the Mac Pro first…
Then install your new Hard-Drive / Start Up and reformat the drive.
