Adding a PC to my wireless network

I would like to find out how I can add a Windows laptop (as yet unpurchased, so assume your basic Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. running Windows 7) to my wireless network. I currently have an iMac running 10.6.5 and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I would like to add the PC to my network so that I can browse, share and edit files across my network. Does anyone have any links, how-tos, advice on how I can do this? Also, other than convenience, are there any upsides/downsides to this (besides having to work on a Windows computer!)? Thanks in advance.

Very similar to the Macs, Windows-based PCs can be configured to share resources: files, internal or attached hard drives, attached-printers, or internal or attached CD drives.
How to configure the PC to do so will be based on the exact operating system of your new device.
Three ways to experience this before going out and buying a PC is: 1) Borrow a PC from a friend, colleague or relative, 2) Use Bootcamp, under OS X to install the Windows OS that you will be interested in, and 3) Similarly, install either Parallels or VMware to run Windows as a virtual Guest.
Using any of these methods can help answer your second question on the upsides/downsides of adding a Windows client to your network.

Can I use a airport express to get internet connection to a Mac Mini that doesn't have wireless by adding it to my existing wireless network?

I bought a first gen Mac Mini for our daughter and it doesn't have internal airport adapter and was wondering if I got a airport express can I plug it in my daughters room and use it as a local router and just use the eithernet connect from it. Or would a airport extreme work better for this job. I have a wireless cable modem that we connect to. I also have a second question I have a iMac G4 that picks up the wireless signal but will not connect to it does it have to be a Apple airport for it to work or should it be able to connect to any broadcasted signal. I'm not sure I quite understand. Do you wish to use the AEX to provide a wireless connection for a device that has an Ethernet port but no wireless capability of its own? You wish to use it in place of a wireless card that isn't internally installed? If so, the answer is, "Yes." It will work as a wireless access point. But you must have an extant wireless network because the AEX won't have an Internet connection when used in this way.
If you have an existing wireless network with a wireless router connected to your cable/DSL model or your modem is a wireless router as well, then the AEX may connect to it in bridge mode. Note that AEXs don't always play nice with non-Apple routers. Some work; others don't.

Adding Time Capsule to existing wireless network?

Hi all
I have been reading the existing posts on this subject but cant really find the answers I need.
We have just bought a Time Capsule to back up our MacBook Pro.
We have a Netgear wireless modem/router which already has a wireless network set up.
My parents use a Windows laptop and access the internet via this network. We do not need this laptop to be backed up with the time capsule.
I am just wondering what is the best way to set up the Time Capsule? Add it to the existing network or create a new network? What are the benefits of each?
We also have a 5GHz wireless network - would it be better to connect the Time Machine to this instead? And if so is it possible for the Mac to run off the 2.4GHz while it backs up to Time Capsule via 5GHz? Sorry not sure how this all works!

How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

How do I add a password to my wireless network

First time posting to the board. So, in advance, thanks for you time and help. I am a computer idiot..not proud just realistic. I have read other posts and I just get lost in them as I do not have a strong working knwledge of computer knowledge. So, after reading on the linksys help pages, I have become even more confused. Basically what I need help with is just adding a password to my wireless network so the laptops in my house are the only ones that can use it. Probably a very basic question, but any help would be greatly welcomed.

To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

Adding clients to our wireless network

We just added airport express as our wireless router and need help adding our windows xp laptops to the network. I do not see "add wireless clients from the base station menu" and our laptops do not recognize any apple wireless devices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need help adding 2nd AExpress to wireless network

hey peeps, i'm adding my second AE to my system, which contains a Macbook, a wireless DSL modem and another AExpress which is wireless and is connected to a stereo. I am having trouble connecting the 2nd AE to the system. Everytime i try to configure it it asks me if i want to switch networks, which i don't want to do. When i do that i lose my connection. I need to tie the new AE in to my current system.

Ok, let's double-check the 2nd AX's configuration to join the wireless network provided by the 2wire.
Temporarily connect AX to your Mac Pro using an Ethernet cable, and then, using the AirPort Utility check the following:
AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing 2wire's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
Music
o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

Adding 802.1x Wireless networks with a script

We have some new wireless networks we've set up for students to use (I work in a University). The networks use 802.1x authentication, and WPA2-Enterprise encryption. Adding Macs with various versions of OSX isn't a big issue, but it's time-consuming. Users need to follow an instruction sheet, and the process is prone to errors.
I'm looking for a method to give users some sort of download to run, which can just add the SSID for our wireless LAN with the minimum of fuss. I've dug around and found various things, but I'm a little perplexed as to how best to go around it. I've seen things suggesting an AppleScript would be able to do it, but I'm no AppleScript export, so some sort of example would be nice.
Any pointers gratefully received.

did you find any resolution to this? our mba- mid 2013 deployment is having a very similar problem. We've gone through loads of troubleshooting and have yet to come to a resolution. all our mid 2012 mba's are working fine they're 10.7.5/10.8.4 mixed. console logs don't show much, i'll try the wireless diags tomorrow. our other 10.8.4 build appears fine on other models of machines. i've read posts about deleteing the adapters, deleting the system config plists and changing the mtu size, these steps do not work for us.
we don't have as high a failure rate with our deployment, but 25%-30% of our clients randomly drop connectivity and are unable to reconnect (fluttering wi-fi wave). when you slect the wifi symbol in the menu bar other wireless networks do not show, the 'looking for networks' fly wheel continues to spin. ocasionaly on login the yellow jelly bean will appear then disappear before finally timeing out without logging the user in (depsite having mobile accounts enabled). mostly the problem manifests itself when waking from sleep - the wifi symbol flutters endlessly without connecting. deleting the 8021x profile and readding it will reenable connectivity. we've tried new profiels, but to the same end. i know our certs and systems are fine because previous mac os x builds work fine as do our windows clients.
any input would be much appreciated.

I need help adding my printer to my home wireless network

My printer was shut down for several months. When i turned it on it was not longer connected to my wireless network. It recognizes my SSID and that of other wireless networks in the area. But I cannot get it connected to my home wireless network.
When I enter my passphrase it returns error "passphrase invalid." If I use the Push Button or PIN set-up I get the error message "WPS timed out."
I have followed the instructions useing the HP Printer set-up disc. It worked on one computer today (it printed a wireless network test report). But, then I could not find the printer on the network later. I also noticed the report does not show a IP address for the printer.
I have also been online with my internet provider and we changed my passphrase 11 times and the printer never recognized any of them. I am operating another printer wirelessly on the same system. By the way, shutting the other printer down did not seem to work. But, they both worked on the network previously.I have also added and deleted the printer several times.
The printer I am trying to add is a HP Photosmart Premium Web C309n-s
I am using a Windows 7 Operating System 64-bit on my laptop and Windows XP 32 bit on the other computers on my home wireless network,

I have been using my Express as my primary basestation. I added an Airport Extreme and now I can not get the computer to recognize the Express. The iTunes don't see it as a possible source of speakers.

Presumably your Airport Extreme is now being used as your wireless network's "base station". Therefore, your Airport Express now needs to be reconfigured to "join" the wireless network being created by your new Airport Extreme. Have you done so? If not, run the Airport Setup Assistant and follow its directions for setting this up.

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

Adding pc to encrypted wireless network

Hello - I just encrypted my airport wireless network. Previously the pc in our house had no trouble using the network. However, now it asks for the WEP key. I don't know what that is. I tried looking in the airport help files, but it doesn't tell me what to put in the pc so it can recognize. It does not accept the password I have chosen to identify the network, so it must be something else. Can someone help?

ok - a bit more clarification.....my husband has a pc laptop, runs XP Pro. He doesn't want to print or share files (he doesn't have the need for that) since his other pc has a direct hardwire connection to the airport & he can utilize all the functions he needs that way.
He just wants the flexibility to be able to get online anywhere in the house for browsing & downloading.
However, we have found out our neighbors are using a wireless network - we are one of two we have seen online. Altho we don't do much financial stuff, we do use bill pay, so I'd rather not have that info accessible.
The password I used when I enabled the encryption is being rejected when he tries to put it in his pc. When he puts this password in it says:
"the network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."
I encrypted the airport at 128 bits....is that the source of the problem?

Adding Airport Express to an existing Windows WEP enabled wireless network

I have can't find anything to help me add my new Airport Express to my existing WEP network. All I want is to use to play my Itunes through the sitting room stereo. I've upgraded the firmware on my Netgear 802.11b wireless access point so I can have a 13 digit WEP password. I've installed the latest install software from the apple website for the express box.
I can access the express box fine on its own but not add it to the existing network. Now the only thing that works is the apple connection! My old wireless network has stopped working. I tried the same at my office yesterday and the only way to resolve the situation was to uninstall all the Apple software and then my Wireless network was able to work again. I'm pulling my hair out here and getting in to trouble with the rest of the family because it is taking so much time up!
Someone mentioned somewhere some new firmware - I can only find one for MAcs not PCs - I don't have any Macs on my network.

Most Netgear wireless routes will tell you the hex equivalent of the plain text WEP password you enter into it - and this is found using the same web browser based process you use to configure the router. This information cannot be found by any other means (like "pinging" the router's IP address). If you can get the WEP key in this manner, configure the Airport Express with the same WEP key *while it is still cabled to the router*.
The alternative is to come up with a 26-digit hex format WEP key of your own choosing. You can then wirelessly access the Airport Express and enter that WEP key on it first, followed by doing the same on the router second.

Adding Airport Express to D-Link wireless network

We have a D-Link wireless router given us by our ISP. I have an Xbox 360. I'd like to take one of our Airport Expresses, and connect the 360 via Ethernet cable to the Airport Express, while the Airport Express joins the D-Link's network, thus giving my 360 wireless internet.
We used to accomplish this using another Airport Express instead of the D-Link, but for our own reasons, we now need to use the D-Link.
Is there a way to add the Express to the network for this purpose?

Yes, configure the Express to "Join" the wireless network created by the D-Link and check the "enable ethernet clients" box. Post back if you need step by step on this configuration.
It's possible that this may work OK for you if you have a strong, fast wireless network. But, you may also want to consider that this would be quite a way down on the list of most desirable ways to connect the 360 to your network.
For the best video quality, suggested in order of preference:
Ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your router to the 360
Ethernet powerline adapter at the router end and another adapter at the 360 end
Wireless from your D-Link to the 360's wireless-if it will accept a wireless connection
Wireless from your D-Link to the Express. Ethernet from the Express to the 360
Would be interested in your feedback on your experience if you use the Express.

Adding Airport Express to Existing Windows Wireless Network

My fiance has an existing Windows wireless network. I have an Airport Express I want to add to the network so I can "broadcast" my iTunes (or her's) through a powered speaker system in another room?
My question is...is that possible? And if so, how?
I've tried running my Airport Setup Assistant and restarting the Airport Express to no avail and would appreciate any suggestions.

Connect to the wireless network connected to the net (ie the (so-called) Windows wireless network**.
Having hard reset the Airport Express, run the Assistant and configure a new base station and configure it to connect to the existing wireless network.
** There is no such thing as a Windows wireless network, as 802.11b/g is the same standard used by Apple and other wireless router manufacturers, it is not Windows specific in any way.

Added a scanner with Secure Easy Setup and my wireless network has disappeared?

I just replaced my fax/scanner. I have a secured wireless home network. I installed the fax/scanner with Secure Easy Setup. The fax works - but my home network as disappeared!!! Where did it go? Do I have to start over and reinstall my whole wireless network? It took me forever to get it working the first time! HELP!!!

when u run easilink again it will give you the chance to change some settings wirelessly, it could be that you have changed some settings and missed that part...
you could check that by accessing the set up page of the router 192.168.1.1
