Adding a timer to a Captivate 4 Project

Is there anyway to add a timer to a project to indicate to the user how much time remains?

Hi there
You mean like a Clock? Or a countdown timer?
You might check out fellow Adobe Community Expert Paul Dewhurst's site at the link below:

Other than that, if you have Flash handy, and you know how to use it, you could create your own gizmo or Widget to insert into Captivate.

  • Captivate adding extra time to old RoboDemo projects

I am currently evaluating Captivate for my company with the
final goal of advising on whether to upgrade our RoboDemo
application. While there are several nice new features that are
great incentives to upgrade, there is one very annoying problem
that I cannot see a workaround to.
We have several complete RoboDemo projects (*.rd) When I open
these files in Captivate 1.01, it is adding 3.0 seconds to many
slides. On slides in RoboDemo that only had mouse movement and had
timing that I had meticiously edited by hand, it has defaulted all
mouse movement timing to 2.0 seconds and then added 3.0 seconds of
time where it is just the screen capture showing. In a demo where
many slides are like this and originally had times of 1.0 second or
less, it has made our demos 4 or 5 times longer!! VERY
    Unacceptable.
I tried locking all of my RoboDemo slides and saving before
opening in Captivate, but Captivate still modified my timing. I
tried to copy RoboDemo slides to Captivate with no help.
Has anyone gone through this experience? I searched the
website and could not find anything. This is a substantial
hinderance to a possible upgrade and we would probably wait until a
newer version comes out for Captivate that resolves this problem.
    Thanks!!!!

    Hi Marc,
Thanks for the continued ideas. I did try this just now and
it is the same as trying to copy the entire slide. I am unable to
copy an individual caption or mouse movement.
    Keep the ideas coming!

if this works, instead of copying a slide, just CTRL+A and grab
everything on a slide and paste it all in. just one more click and
its the net same result as copying a slide.

  • Captivate project takes long time to load on LMS

So I developed a bunch of Captivate 7 modules for a course I'd been working on for some time. When I finally loaded these up on the LMS, I notice that when the modules are launched, a pop-up window opens with a grey background and just stays like that for up to 3-4 mins. I figured grey, because that's what I had set as the HTML page color in the skin editor. However the actual module contents take really long (3-4 mins) to load up. When I tried running all these modules locally from my computer, the grey screen fades into the splash animation within a second.
I figured that this was either due to a bandwidth issue or the LMS causing problems. So I then had these modules tested from our India and US offices (different internet connecttions, multiple LMSs). Same thing happened, takes up to 3-4 mins to transition from the grey screen to the splash animation (but loads up instantly when run locally). We then tried this on multiple LMSs like SABA, Moodle, and even tried this on SCORM Cloud and the same issue. The modules takes a long time to load up, so I kind of ruled out the LMS/bandwidth being an issue.
I'm speculating here, but what I think is happening is that the SCO is trying to download the entire module (about 10MB) to the users machine before it plays the splash animation -- if that's the case then is there a way to avoid that? I mean I don't want a 200 slide Captivate published project to be downloaded right from clicking the launch button -- it could stream through as the user advances through the module. Also, I've seen some pre-loader and Start/End options but not sure how those work.
Important to note here, the 3-4 min wait time from when the module is launched, is only for the first launch. If I were to close the browser popup (in which the SCO opened), and click launch again from the LMS, it's loads up almost instantly -- so I'm pretty sure something's happening in my Captivate project's loading settings which I can't put my finger on.
Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening and also what are some possible fixes to this. I can assure you that it's not an internet bandwidth issue because we've tested it on multiple internet connections and on several LMSs (even the client's LMS that this was tested on says that the initial load up takes too long).

All the symptoms you quote sure sounds like a bandwidth issue to me.
Obviously when you load a project directly from your hard drive then there's no issue with bandwidth.  But if you're pulling down 10 megs from a web server and it takes a while to start then bandwidth is the obvious issue.  I agree that 3-4 minutes sounds excessive for a 10 meg file but that depends entirely on how many users are sharing your bandwidth.  Try getting your people in these different locations to visit one of those websites that allows you to test your actual bandwidth.  It might not be as much as you think.
On another note...What do you have your preloader set to?  The default is 100% but you can usually set it to something like 25% without too much trouble.  That should cut the start time down appreciably but nothing is going to eliminate it completely because there'll always be some initial lag the first time your learners view the content.

  • Issues adding swfs created in Flex to a Captivate project

The company I work with, ePath Learning Inc. has an online authoring tool called eActivity that we use to publish different eLearning templates. This online tool is built completely in Flex and uses the Flex compiler to ouput a swf file that can be used in many different products and online courses. Because it's an AS3/Flex created swf, we've had to wait for Captivate 4 to be released to support the generated swf file, so now we are testing it's compatibility and have run into some issues. It appears that swf files from our online authoring tool do not work correctly in Captivate. Further testing resulted in any swf published using Flex do not work properly in Captivate. Attempts at adding a swf file complied with Flex result in a variety of different errors as well as a performance issue causing the control bar as well as all other aspects of the Captivate project to work incorrectly.
I've attached 2 sample swf files, 1 built using our online authoring tool and 1 using Flex Builder 3. When added to a new blank project in Captivate 4 using AS3 settings we have the errors as explained above.

    Hi there
I just uploaded a small video to Jing. See if it helps you resolve the issue.

  • Can A YouTube Video Link/Code Be Added In A Captivate Project?

    Hello,
Can I add a video embed code or link to a Captivate project (rather than the actual video file itself) when making an swf project? How do I do it?
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Hi Paul
I think we need a wee bit more information here.
If you are using Captivate 4, I believe there is a widget that may be used to embed a YouTube video in a Captivate project. That appears to be the first thing you asked.
But the way you phrased the question, you could have also been asking about a way to create a link to a Captivate Project file (the CP file).
Can you describe exactly what it is you want to see in the end result? Just be basic. I want to click a button, see a slide that does this. And describe what this is.

  • How can I create a new skin (other than the default skins) for my Captivate Project?

    Hi everyone,
I am working on a project where my client wants me to create a player skin which is completely different from the default themes that captivate has already. The design which client has shared with me contains in this way:
    1. TOC - should be truncated and can be expanded by pressing "+" button against the Navigation Text. Its like opening and closing the menu bar using + and - buttons
    2. Playback controls required by him are also not in the default skins.
I dont know, if there is any way to customize the skins to this level inside captivate.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks & Regards
    Vikas Sharma

    Unlikely, I'm afraid.
The LMS has no control over the playbar that pauses or plays the Captivate content.
In a Multi SCORM package, the LMS also may be showing a TOC in the SCORM player with links to launch the lesson modules.  This TOC is in addition to the TOC inside the Captivate project file which gives access to sections of the module by jumping to slides that begin those sections.  But the LMS doesn't usually give you any control over the look and feel or functionality of that TOC either.
If your client is adamant that they want complete control over these areas, then your best option may be NOT to build this course with Captivate but build it from the ground up with another tool.  E.g. Flash, or Dreamweaver.  Either way, that will add a lot more time and expense to the project.  But if the client has the budget and is unwilling to budge on their requirement, then that's what I would be telling them to do.

  • QA checklist for a Captivate project?

Does anyone have a list of things to check for when reviewing
a Captivate project that someone else created, in other words, a
    Quality Assurance checklist?

Written down? No. But that is an awesome idea. Here's some things I check for:
Are all the captions the same color, same font, same alignment (Captivate likes to throw curve balls sometimes. Not sure why.)
Do all the buttons, click boxes work how they are supposed to? (Test everything. Back and forth again and again)
Does each slide just look nice, symmetrical, plenty of white space, not to cluttered?
Does the audio sync up with the captions or graphics being used?
Can you think of any way to spice up the module by adding graphics, animations, or audio, voice or music?
Are the hightlight boxes and other pointers noticeable? (You'd be surprised what the designer sees compared to what the user sees.)
Does it flow? Does it feel like you are just going through it or are there random thoughts or tangents thown in that need deleted or reorganized?
    Hope that gets you started.

  • What is the largest "manageable" size for a captivate project? (I think I've passed it)

    Problem:
It used to take perhaps 5 minutes for the Captivate software to open and the project to actually load. Now, Captivate loads (menu screen) but the project does not open - it just sits there. When I close the software it asks if I want to save changes to my project, as if it had opened.
    Background:
The captivate project that is roughly 260MB. This is after having copied and pasted all the slides to a new project to reduce the file size (several times) -- because of unexplainable ballooning of the file size. I am using a computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.35 GHZ processor with 4GB or RAM.
    Questions:
What is the largest manageable file size for a project?
Is there a limit to the number of slides a project can contain (i.e., 200)?
What can I do to get my project to actually open?
    Thanks!
    Dan

    Hi there
Normally we advise that a Captivate project should fall into somewhere between 50-65 slides as a general upper limit. Occasionally reaching as high as 100 to *MAYBE* 120 slides. Depending on a number of factors.

  • Track completion of embedded swf within captivate project

I have a swf created within captivate 4 which is a traiining simulation.  Now I want to embed this simulation on a screen within a new host captivate project and enable the next progress button only when the embedded training simulation is done. What is a good way to do this?
While trying different options, a problem I am running into is the embedded training simulation does not close when all the interactivity is done even if the swf publish options are set to close upon completion.  It wants to run for a set time. Any ideas are much appreciated.

    Hi Gaspar,
Are you using a preloader for the project? If so, the default
one in Captivate waits for 60% of the project to load before
playing. Perhaps try to add the preloader if you aren't using one,
or remove it if you are to see if that makes a difference. In
Captivate 3, you can change this option in Preferences -->
Project --> Start and End --> Loading Screen.
    Good luck,
    David
Edit: I just tried this too and got the same results when
publishing with all versions of Flash - I was a little surprised to
see it even with Flash 7 exports, because Captivate has let me
embed .swf animations into a single .swf project file using Flash
    7. I'm guessing that whatever Flash "engine" Captivate uses to
create its own FMV .swfs must be Flash 8 or 9. That would be
something that would be nice to adjust - especially because of the
lack of the ability to merge .swf files into one file. I guess I'll
    send a feature request again...

  • Embedding captivate projects

    Hi,
I am attempting to embed one captivate project within another. The reason that I want to do this is so that I am able to reuse one smaller project in a number of other larger projects. I am using variables and I want all available in all projects. I have attempted to just cut and past the screens from one project to another but this does not cut and paste the variable in the smaller project.
Is there anyway of achieveing this, and what is the most efficient way to do so.
    I am using captivate 4

  • Extremely large captivate project files

    Hi there,
So we recently hit a problem with Captivate, we use both english and arabic for our courses and one of our projects is about 27 slides (including 7 question slides) and the final captivate file size for the arabic course (not published) is about 1GB, however the english course is a mere 120mb using the same material, only difference is in the text.
I just tried deleting all the slides and selecing all unused data and deleted them for the project hirearchy, but I ran into another problem which is that the project file dropped 20mb in total and its still close to 1GB.
I would also like to add that the published release for the arabic course was around 80mb.
    Adobe Captivate Version :  7.0.1.237
Any ideas? let me know if more information is required..
    Thank you!

Holy cow!! Adobe has a 3rd level of support? Cool. Only
partially kidding ... I really didn't know you could access various
levels. Is the 3rd level where you get to talk to the actual
    engineers? Just wondered ...
Joel, in my experience it is often helpful to go to the most
basic approach in trying to isolate a problem. For instance, you
can eliminate the PPT being the cause of the problem by creating
    another to try importing.
You can eliminate computer resources (on your own machine) by
importing a tiny, tiny PPT file and work up to a larger one.
And finally (for now), have you tried to use Power Point's "
File > Page Setup" to reduce the footprint (size) of the
PPT you are trying to import into Captivate?
This has been known to help, and at one time years ago I even
had a formula of sorts to get the size of the PPT to compliment the
size of the Captivate stage (slide). Sadly, I can't find that now,
but I would think you should keep the aspect ratio (AR) the same,
    and that should help.
For instance, if the Captivate project is 800x600 (pixels),
the aspect ratio is 4:3 (as it is for the standard computer
monitor). Therefore you would want to set up your Power Point
project with that same AR so that the import process is not forced
to change AR, or to crop the imported images.
Hope there is something of value in there for you. When you
get up to that level of help where you are talking to the President
of Adobe, could you drop my name ... every little bit helps.
Have a very nice day JoelStern!!

  • Mass Publish Captivate Projects

This may sound crazy, but I am looking for a way to mass publish captivate files.
I am looking for something along the lines of:
•Some menu option I wasn’t able to find
         •Command line interface
         •Magic
I have over 350 captivate projects that need to be exported to both Flash and SCORM. Thanks to a series of unfortunate events, my teams past 7 months of Captivate 4 work has recently been re-exported with Captivate 5 just in time for Flash Player 10.1.102.64 to render them unplayable.
I have waited for an update of Flash Player, but our go live date is approaching fast and I can’t just wait on hopes any longer. This leaves me with installing the manual Captivate 5 hotfix and re-re-reporting 371 projects… twice; once in Flash and another in SCORM.
Any suggestions anyone may have would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Carlos

    Hi Harsh,
You can mass upload Projects by using the standard Project Template available, just add  another Field  "GENERATE_DOCUMENT_ID" in the template and set it too TRUE. It will generate the new UNIQUE_DOC_NAME for the new project which you are creating via the Workbook.
Sample workbook sent to you mail id mentioned above.
    Hope it helps!!

  • Unable to Link Captivate Projects, Desperate!

    Hello,
    I am using Captivate 4, Version 4.01, Build 1658.
I am trying to link / launch one Captivate project from another. I have searched the Help and Forums for over two hours and from what I read this should be working hunky dorry in my release. Obviously I am missing something.
I have two projects. Proj_Main and Proj_1. Proj_Main has a menu I need to use to launch other Projects.  At the end of the Projects I want ot return to this menu.  I have tried:
1). Click box in Proj_Main with On Success, Open Other Project and pick CP file name.
    2)  Click box in Proj_Main with On Success, Open URL or File and pick HTM file name OR SWF file name.
    3) Menu button at end of Proj_1 with with On Success, Open Other Project and pick Proj_Main CP file.
    4) Menu button at end of Proj_1 with with On Success, Open URL or File and pick HTM file name OR SWF file name.
With the Open URL choice, I have removed the absolute path and just left the file name.
I verified that all the files (CP, SWF, HTM) are in the same folder I am working from.
In all cases I am getting NO response when I click the click box or button.
I must be missting something obvious. Please HELP!
    = Corbin

I WAS missing something. It was those dang security settings. I added all the folders to my allowed Flash security settings and now it works.
    Doh!

  • Setting up Version Management (Git, SVN) for Captivate Projects

I'm guessing the answer is No, but I thought I would ask:
Is there any way to set up some kind of Version Management/Source Code management for a Captivate project?
Currently, I just have a bunch of nearly identical cptx files with some kind of naming convention so that I can tell which one is which. If I need to revert something, I have to hope that I made a "Save As" at the right point in time. If I need to work with a colleague, there is no straight-forward way to review the changes that she made.
Adobe Captivate is basically a speciallized IDE with some additional graphical stuff. Having some kind of version control tool, especially if it were Git, would be very helpful both for my personal productivity as well as for managing collaboration with my colleagues.

So far the only WOW version control i have found is AlienBrain but i have a better chance of being struck by lightning on a clear summer day than ever owning it.
    http://www.alienbrain.com/features
A promising solution is Razuna http://razuna.org/whatisrazuna but I havent "project tested" it yet to see how well it will work while developing in a team enviroment.
Something i doubt i will ever find is a solution to "show the difference" in a file similar to how WinMerge http://winmerge.org/ shows the difference in files or compairison of folder directories.
It would be nice to be able to compare two (or more) captivate files slide by slide with syncronised scrolling to note differences.
Seems like most people are pretty quiet about what they use for version management.
