Adding in internal HD

I have a G5 dual 2 gig.
my Western Digital external 120gig crashed.
I may have lost some data, or at least I will have to rebuild a lot of folders.
I want to buy an internal Seagate 300 gig ATA100 from Tigerdirect.($100)
It comes with no mounting hardware.
is this a good choice.

  • Adding Bluetooth internally to DV7-3165DX?

    What steps are involved with adding bluetooth internally to DV7-3165DX? What pitfalls should I avoid? Pics would help. As a measure of skill level, I have replaced hard drive and display (panel only) in same laptop. How difficult is it compared to these?
    I am looking at buying the following to add bluetooth internally to my DV7-3165DX, so this would free up 1 usb port from bluetooth nano. I have a lot of usb accessories. DV7-3167NR used the same motherboard, 574679-001, and parts for internal bluetooth.
    537921-001     Bluetooth SB module
    583501-001     Bluetooth module interface cable

    All you need to do is to buy a BlueTooth dongle, for about £10, which just plugs in to a USB port and you are BT activated. But unless it is the D-Link one that Apple recommends, it may not work with a headset, though it works OK syncing with and transferring files to and from a digital camera.

  • Adding 2nd internal HD

    I am considering adding a 2nd internal HD to my PowerMac G5 (June 2003 - single 1.8 processor) & was wondering what type HD is recommended. Will this machine use a SATA drive or only a PATA drive? Is it important to have a drive that supports S.M.A.R.T. or is that just hype?
    I may also replace the original drive (160G) that came with the machine. My stratigy is to put a 500G-750G in slot 2, clone the new drive & make it the boot drive. Test it for a while until I know all is OK, then replace the 160G with a 500G-750G. Does anyone have experience with this? What drives are the best? I have several external LaCie drives, but I don't see LaCie's being used as internals. I don't even know if they make internal drives.
    I do want a drive that has at least the same (or better) reliability & life cycle of the original that came with the machine, which BTW is working great.
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Hi LStacy-
    You will need an SATA drive.
    The drive does not have to support SMART. It is a tad of hype but sometimes can be helpful. Most internal units support SMART anyway.
    I have done precisely as you describe with regards to cloning, upgrading and testing drives. Any SATA drive manufactured by any of the large vendors (Seagate, Maxtor, WD, Hitachi for example) will work.
    External LaCie drives have actual physical hard drive mechanisms manufactured by drive manufacturers, so in other words a LaCie housing could contain a Maxtor or Seagate drive.
    You can always take your current drive and place it in an external housing to use for backups and such.

  • Adding additional internal IP route

    I have an internal router to connect to a different network. I want to be able to connect to devices in that network. I've selected Advanced->Routing and added a new route. I can now ping the addresses on that network, but can make no connections to them. Adding static routes to my PC allows the connections, but I'd rather the router handle the connections. Does anyone know of a way to allow those connections.

    So you're able to ping from a host on VLAN1 to the vlan2?
    Also are you using these instructions?

  • Adding raptor internal drive to macpro. Opinions?

    Hello everybody,
    I am thinking of adding a Western Digital Raptor:
    WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM
    16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
    to my macpro. Based on the newegg website, most customers are satisfied. There are few though not too happy about it. Same deal in mac forums. And you? your opinion?
    another question: I am definitely adding 2 more gb. Does it matter if I install the ram prior to raptor?
    3) Did you zero out raptor before installing OS 10?
    I would greatly appreciate anyone feedback. thank you
    sandrine.
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Mac Pro
    Machine Model: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
    L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    MAC PRO   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    There are plenty of fans outs there for the Raptors and while I've never owned one myself you should do well with one. Ultimately, with every drive you'll find those that love them and those that hate them so there's nothing new there. The Raptors are an enterprise drive and have a good reliability record so why not.
    One thing to keep in mind is that the Raptor does haev WD's TLER functionality so in an error recovery scenario it is more likely to lose data that a drive with a standard or even compressed error recovery. These are designed for RAID.
    As for installing RAM before Raptor, there's no problem with doing either in any order you like. One won't affect the other.
    Yes, zero the drive before using it. I zero all of my drives before using them and find that I'd rather it have a problem with that process than with my data. It also give you an opportunity to see if it's writing correctly. The Raptor should zero in 30 minutes or less.
    PS I've noticed you put your hardware overview in all of your posts. It would be simpler if you just added the important bits into your system profile which can be done in the "My Settings" link on the right (Computer Model and Other Computer Information fields). That way it'll be in all of your posts without you having to do anything. To be honest, the only information there that's of any use is your processor speed and RAM. Everything else there is the same as everyone else's Mac Pro.

  • Advise for adding larger internal hard drive & faster processor

    After five years it is time to make some upgrades to my G4 Quicksilver 733 MHz Tower. The hard drive is nearly full and the processor doesn't seem as fast as it once did (especially after using my faster PowerBook G4). I want to replace the 40GB hard drive with a 128GB hard drive. What is the best way to transfer the data and information (applications, etc.). Should I add it as a second hard drive and transfer the data that way then remove the original one? Perhaps I should move all my data from an aux hard drive I have. Should I do a clean install of the operating system and then transfer the rest of the data? If you make a second hard drive I guess you have to identify one as a "master" and the original one as the "slave", or should I do it the opposite way? Any advise would be helpful. Also I want to upgrade to a 1.8 duel processor. One person told me I may be disappointed with the results since the speed of the mother board limits the performance of the processor. Is that true? I have already maxed out the RAM so I should be fine there. Any advise to these issues would be most appreciated.

    Hi
    You could use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your existing drive:
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    Alternatively you could just reinstall everything from scratch. I tend to do a reinstall and have a bit of a clean out, only reinstalling those apps etc I still actually use.
    I'd have both drives installed internally to do the cloning or transferring of data across after a reinstall. You could then remove the original drive or just leave it for use as a backup disk or temporary storage area etc. With two drives installed, one will need to be set to master and one to slave. With one drive installed, it will need to be set to master. I don't think it really matters which way around you do it.
    In terms of processor upgrades, the 133MHz system bus/memory will become a bottleneck at some point, but it partly depends on which applications you're using at the time and whether they're processor bound or bandwidth starved. IMHO there's a sweet spot where you get the most bang for the buck. A higher clocked processor would probably still be faster in real world terms, but I suspect you get diminishing returns for the extra cost involved.
    When I upgraded my Quicksilver, I intended to get a single 7455 based processor upgrade from OWC. They're resonably priced and tend to be faster in real world usage than a 7447 based processor upgrade running at the same clock speed due to the extra level 3 cache (which partly helps to offset the limited bus speed). In the end though I managed to get a dual 1GHz processor card pulled from another Quicksilver in OWC's clearance section. The advantages were it's an original Apple part which didn't require any firmware updates, software patches or additional fans etc. The disadvantages were it's a four year old part with a limited warranty and the heat sink had to be reattached using thermal paste etc.
    I hope this helps.

    The above is the basic config of my machine. I currently only have one HD, 160GB (I believe) I want to add another internal drive. Can I add a 500GB or 750 GB with this machine? If so, any recommendations?
    Also, I have already expanded the memory from 250 to 2 GB (can I take this to 4GB?) with 4 500mb .
    I am a photographer and with Leopard, my disk space is just about used up.....
    Any recommendaitons, please?

    Hey there
    I am a photographer too. I have a G5 tower and put another disk in recently. Yep you can throw just about any SATA drive in there. Just make sure it's 7200 rpm and SATA. Look on Pricespy.co.nz for good deals for hard disks. Your computer should have come with a manual to show how to put it in, it's dead easy but you can pay someone to put it in for you.
    I am about to change my main drive from a 160 to 500gb and my second drive too. Then use the old ones as external backups and scratch disks for photoshop. I hope that it will speed up my photoshop.
    Hope this helps.

  • ADDING an INTERNAL ZIP to G4

    Hi everyone, I have a G4 gigabit ethernet, I had a problem with the power supply and bought a g4 tower with a zip drive in it. Can I just take it out of the G4 I bought on ebay and put it in my G4? I noticed the face plate will change over ok. But I'm not sure what else I need to do. I have an external zip hooked up now but would rather have it internally. I tried reading past posts but couldn't find any that had what I needed. I need to know if I can, and then step by step how to.
    Thanks Dana

  • Adding second Internal hardrive (ide) to Imac G5

    Ok...
    I've been scouring the internet for details of installing a second internal drive in a imac g5 revision 5 (no isight camera) and have found conflicting information.
    The cable to my external Phantom Firewire drive is screwed and I need access to this information QUICK. I can order the cable from the company but I'll need the info BEFORE it's actually arrives by mail (can't afford overnight charges)...
    so what I'd like to do is install the drive, as a second drive in my iMac G5. I've read in some places that this is possible and I've read that it's not.
    My drive is a Seagate IDE and I've read that you can only install SATA drives but i've also read that you can install IDE drives in the G5.
    Can someone please help me sort out what's true and what isn't?

    The article is talking about a G5 tower, you cannot put a second drive in the iMac, there's simply no room. Sorry.

  • Sound not playing after I added an internal preloader

    Ok... I am slowly trying to get all of the pieces to this
    flash file working...
    FYI -- Major Newb!
    I added this preloader to a flash file that was working..
    http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tut...reloader/14517
    After adding the preloader I:
    I moved all content files to begin on the 5th frame.
    I am using actionscript to allow people to pause, stop, and
    play sound.
    The sound is launched with the following script and required
    me to right click the sound file in select linkage, export for
    actionscript and name the file (Sound).
    Here is the sound actionscript
    s = new Sound();
    s.attachSound("Sound");
    i=1;
    function timeme (){
    now = new Date();
    var hours = now.getHours();
    var minutes = now.getMinutes();
    var seconds = now.getSeconds();
    _root["nowtime"+i] =
    (Number(hours)*3600)+(Number(minutes)*60)+seconds;
    _root.newstarttime = _root["nowtime"+i] - _root.nowtime1;
    i++;
    s.start();
    timeme();
    after adding the preloader I can't seem to get the sound to
    work. I set the action to start on the 5th frame and many other
    tweaks and can't seem to get it to work. I am guessing there is a
    conflict between how the sound is loaded and the preloader.
    The sound works if I check the export on first frame box but
    this prevents the preloader from loading quickly and there for
    defeats the purpose.
    I like the preloader and would like to see if I can get the
    sound to function with it and not visa versa.
    Thanks in advance.

    Check for debris in the dock connector port; it's also possible that you physically damaged the docking connector on the iPhone.
    Have you tried resetting or restoring your iPhone? Reset first -tto reset the iPhone, press and hold the home and sleep/wake buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the slide to power off prompt).

  • Adding an internal CD R/RW

    Hi,
    My old B/W G3 has a great 3rd party internal CD R/RW (52x) which is way faster than the default superdrive of my new MacPro.
    Can I add it to the available optical bay of the MacPro? Any specific details I should be aware of?
    Thank you.

    Should I take into consideration the size of the tray on an optical drive when purchasing one for the Mac Pro? The one that comes on the system does not have the large plastic part that is perpendicular to the tray (used to keep stuff out of the drive) on it.
    If you get a drive with a bulky front like this will it be able to get past the doors on the front of the Mac Pro?

  • Adding another internal HardDrive

    How would I go about installing another internal harddrive into my new imac? I recently perchased my imac because my old windows XP computer became "unusable". I want to use this hard drive on this imac, so how would I go about installing it inside?
    - or is it impossible? -

    It would be very helpful if you told us what iMac you have. If you want to add a second drive in addition to the one already inside the answer is no you cannot do that. If you want to re-use the XP hard drive your best bet would be to get an enclosure and connect it via USB or FW800, however remember you will probably have to reformat it to make it useable.
