Adding new RAM to Mac Pro

I just got my new Mac Pro. It comes with (2) 1G sticks of DDR2 RAM. I bought (4) 2G sticks of DDR2 RAM from OWC to put in it. Can I just add my 2G sticks and keep the 1G sticks in, or do they all have to be the same size?
I spoke with 2 different Apple reps on the phone today, and they gave me 2 different answers. One said no - they all have to be the same size. The other said I could use different sizes, but they just have to be paired.
Anyone know what the right answer is?

my Mac Pro configuration in the system profiler only shows 512MB cards in Raiser B DIMM1 and DIMM2, allthough I have added new 2G cards into Raiser A DIMM3 and DIMM4.
The Raiser A DIMM1 and DIMM2 slots are occupied by 512MB cards as well, but these are also not visible in the Memory Slot summary.
Question: It seems I have 6GB memory, but only 1 MB visible in the Memory Slot summary. Is this possible and how can I activate the whole memory?

I've just picked up a brand new 6 core Mac Pro and I am having some serious lag issues with Illustrator CC 2014. I am just trying to select relatively simple objects (an illustration of the side of a coin) and there is a massive delay between when I click on an object and when it actually becomes selected.
Someone please tell me they know how to fix this? Please

New imac vs mac pro

Apologies if this is going over old ground.
I'm finally ready to upgrade/replace for Power Mac G5. It's been a loyal and reliable servant (apart from a blown graphics card this year) for 7 years, but it's time to retire.
I mainly use FCP & DVDSP with HD footage and increasingly Motion to produce short promos and corporate videos.
Although, my G5 does the job - it's now very slow rendering HD footage and Motion is almost a non-starter. Running concurrent applications is a painful and nosy experience.
So to new investment. With the obvious upgrading limitations of an imac, how long will it last before needing another upgrade? I'd be happy with 4 years
Or is the added expandability of a Mac Pro worth the extra cash?
I dare say either will blow me away at first.

What say others in a similar position? Which would you go for?

New iMac has Thunderbolt, so you'll be able to edit from super fast Thuderbolt drives then they start shipping in about 3 more months. For now you're stuck with FW800 drives which really aren't ideal for HD work. But don't expect Thunderbolt drives to be cheap, not nearly as cheap as internal SATA drives for a tower.
Mac Pro allows you to install better, more powerful grahics cards that will let Motion, Color (and soon FCP X) run better, and you can get more CPU cores (which will impact FCP X, and the next version of FCStudio in beta testing). You'll also be able to add much less expesive internal drives (2TB for not much), which will be fast enough for working with FCS apps.
Either way, you want the most number of CPU cores, fastest CPUs, 8GB RAM, and two 7200rpm drives. You need a second drive as your scratch drive for sure. Best graphics card you can afford.
While I was at NAB, a few companies said they were looking into developing a Thuderbolt PCI card for the current Mac Pro towers. But I'm sure those will be some time before we see them.
Hint, don't get RAM and drives from Apple, go to OtherWorldComputing (.com) and get them much cheaper. Super easy to install, and they'll give you clear directions for doing so. Top notch customer support, also.

Could someone suggest a procedure describing how I should migrate my iTunes files from old an older Motorola-based PowerMac to a new Intel-based Mac Pro?

My problem concerns migrating, or moving my iTunes files from a Motorola-based G4 PowerMac OS X 10.4.11 iTunes 9.2.1 (4) to a new Intel-based Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.4 iTunes 11.0.4.
Context Summary:
1. Migration assistants on my old and new macs are not compatible.
2. My older mac has my iTunes library stored on an external firewire disk.
3. Part (but not all) of my iTunes files are also resident/stored on my iPod classic.
4. Finally, I need OS X 10.4.11 on my old mac and cannot upgrade it to OS X10.5.
Proposed method A: Is there a way to transfer my playlists from my Motorola Mac to my Intel Mac? If so, could I then connect my external firewire disk (containing my iTunes library) to my new mac, and then tell iTunes (on new mac) to use my iTunes library located on my external firewire disk?
Proposed method B: Would my chances for success improve if I used my iPod classic to transfer iTunes files from old Mac to new?
Worst Case Proposal C: I could start from scratch and recreate iTunes playlists and library on new mac.... time consuming proposal but it's possible. (Please don't suggest this proposal unless no other viable choices exist for me.)
Or have I missed something? Is there another procedure I should use?

Answer to your iTunes library question: By iTunes Library, I mean my iTunes Media folder only; not the entire /iTunes/folder with iTunes media folder inside.
BTW: Your pointer to ht4889 was very helpful, and sharing the folder, then copying it over firewire interface from old to new mac was most useful.
However, now with my entire iTunes folder (including iTunes media folder) moved to new mac, I remain unclear as to how I should configure iTunes on the new mac so that it can know about and use these copied files. I understand using iTunes preferences, how to point iTunes to my media folder, but don't know what other iTunes operations are necessary for iTunes to pick up where I left off with my old mac.
Is there any file conversion necessary?
Or inside iTunes, should I:
File->Library->Organize Library? or
File->Library->Export Library? or
File->Library->Import Playlist?
Please advise and thank you again for your help.
As you might imagine, I put a great deal of time building my iTunes library, and would feel very blue if I need to build it again from scratch on my new mac.

Adding more RAM to my Pro Mac - config?

I'm considering buying from OWC (one-third the cost of buying from Apple) - 8GB (2GBx4) PC5300 DDR2 ECC 667MHz 240 Pin FB-DIMMs.
Specifically:
8.0GB OWC Matched Set (2GB x 4) PC5300 DDR2 ECC 667MHz 240 Pin FB-DIMM Modules for all Mac Pro Quad Core and 8 Core systems.
OWC claims these chip sets are Apple qualified memory and they offer their "LifeTime Advance Replacement Warranty" with them. The cooling fins appear identical to the Apple RAM I have already in my Pro Mac.
My config is as follows:
A1 1gb
A2 1gb
A3 >>> proposed 2gb
A4 >>> proposed 2gb
B1 1gb
B2 1gb
B3 empty
B4 empty
Would the above configuration be the correct way to install this new RAM?

I've been so busy on this thing... Update for ya;
OWC RAM arrived the other day; I've had it installed for 2 days now. I did remove my existing (4) 1GB DIMMs before installing the new (4) 2GB DIMMs. Also, I installed smcFanControl.
I've not yet re-installed my original (4) 1GB DIMMs; I think I'll add reinsert them tomorrow...
I ran a TechToolPro test on the 8GB of new DIMMs a few times, and so far everything is perfect. I haven't done any "heavy" dual-core lifting yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll play around in Photoshop and kick the crap outta my new DIMMs.
On the smcFan speeds: Out of the box, the fan speeds are all set at 500rpm. I kicked them all up to 1150rpm - and the temp. dropped from 40°C to 35°C in about 3 minutes. Literally, my MacPro is a cool machine. It's quiet too, I can't hear the fans that much, just an occasional sound - not of rushing wind but the motor - a VERY SLIGHT, SUBTLE harmonic vibration (that description doesn't do its gentle hum justice...) It sounds a little like an old fish tank water pump - very very subtle vibration-like periodical rattle. I'm guessing its a fan's blades slightly out of balance??
Yes, I dusted the heck out of the entire Mac Pro before doing any work on it - so the rattle (again, not a terribly noticeable noice at all) isn't dust. Bearings perhaps?? Anyway -
Question: What are you referring to as the "base" fan? I see four:
1. the CPU Fan
2. PCIe/HDD
3. Rear Fan
4. Power SUpply
Is there a vast difference if - say - the front fans are slower than the rear fans? That is a condition that would ostensibly create negative pressure within the box - and THAT (deductively) would improve airflow, wouldn't it?
Speaking of airflow, I noticed that OWC's DIMMs have not four but about 7-8 fins on each side of the chip sets. I would deduce that more fins equates to greater heat dissipation... But these fins are closer together - which could reduce the air flow between fins. Such dilemmas... :-/ Anyone out there care to comment on more fins meaning more cooling?
Lastly, can the temp. range be too low? Is a temp. range below 40°C a bad thing?

oh - the other non-RAM issue - it was 10 bad blocks on a 500GB disc. I had a means to back-up the VM guts - and that was enough of a back-up to proceed with a wipe-reload scenario!

Added ram to mac pro, get ecc memory error and 4mem/9/40000006: B:0 C:0 R:0

I recently purchased a 2.8 8 core Mac pro (early '08 model). It came shipped with 2gigs of ram (one gig on riser card a, one gig on riser b).
I purchased 2 1gig sticks from ramjet, i followed a apple tutorial and installed the 2 original sticks in riser card A (slots 1 and 2), and the 2 new Ramjet sticks in riser card B (slots 1 and 2) for a total of 4gigs.
When I powered on the computer everything was fine, clicked the black apple logo to view "about this mac" and the 4gigs total memory showed up. However when i clicked "more info" then "memory"... it showed the status on one of the new ramjet sticks as "ecc error"
I rebooted the computer and the error message was gone, all sticks showed a status of "ok"
a few days went by and i was constantly checking the system profiler and the status would always show the sticks as "ok" and the computer acts totally normal, i run pro tools, logic pro, photoshop and it would run flawlessly.
The fact it showed an error a few days prior was still bugging me so i decided to call the applecare protection and consult with them... they said to remove and re-install the memory, reboot holding down the "option + command + R + P" to reset memory, then to reboot again holding down the "D" to do a Apple hardware Test.
the first test showed pass, i checked the extended test and that showed a 4mem/9/40000006: B:0 C:0 R:0 error, the second and 3rd tests froze and i had to push the power button to reboot.
I contacted Applecare once again and they said that since my computer was not acting funny nor freezing during apps or showing any errors that it should be fine, as long as the status said "ok" in system profiler and all four gigs registered in "about this mac" that no harm is going to happen.
when i asked what that long error code was she said it did not come up in her computer but she thinks its because its not official apple memory.
I tried searching online in forums to solve this but i cant find anything on that specific error code.
sorry for the long post but i wanted to be as detailed as possible to get the best advice

and by the way i did contact ramjet and they are willing to replace my memory but there advice was also not to worry that its only giving that error due to the memory not being "official" apple memory, but if it registers and the computer acts totally normal to just leave it be.

yes they have heat sinks and ramjet states they are "apple grade"
i downloaded the istat widget (not sure how accurate that is) and it says the apple sticks on A run at 32 degrees and the ones on B run at 31 degrees
the comp is practically brand new and when i opened it for the ram install it still looked brand new (no dust) its only a few weeks old.
I am going to return the sticks for sure to be safe but where im lost is.... yes it did show ecc error once, never again, its been a week now still no ecc error. I ran tech tool deluxe and everything passes, i ran "Rember memory test" and it passes, system profiler registers all 4 gigs and shows status as ok, computer acts totally normal? but the apple hardware test fails i guess im lost to why the comp says the ram is ok nd passes most tests just not the AHT test.

O and I forgot to mention i called applecare again and requested a different agent to help me and he said Ecc stands for error correcting? so if it came up once and not again it did what it was suppose to do... corrected itself (now that sounds like more b.s to me but i have no idea about computer stuff )

How do I install Yosemite on a 2nd HDD I have added and have the Mac Pro boot from the new HDD?

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?

A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199

Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from.

Monitor not working after installing new memory in Mac Pro

I installed 4GB of new memory in my first generation Mac Pro following diagram. When I booted the monitor is black. The key board is working but not the monitor. I removed the new memory and tried again but same problem. Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Well no one really buys from Apple and higher density goes into A1:2 then B1:2 and four DIMMs in those is best symmetrical configuration.
You say you tried xyz but not really very specific to me.
Some users doesn't tell much. However sometimes putting all the 512MB (not 500) on one Riser and the 4GB set on other has worked.
If it doesn't work with just the new RAM alone in A1:2 then it is bad or wrong and needs to go back.
And there have been 3-4 article changes on how to reset SMC. Yours has an SMC button. Leaving unplugged alone is a waste and almost useless. Hitting power button while unplugged was added in 2009.
And it could still be your GPU which is common - 7300 or X1900 or 8800GT... or...

New 8 Core Mac Pro Question

What will the 8 Core Mac Pro do for Aperture? I know you need 4 gig of ram and the ATI video card. I am just curious about what processor to purchase.
I find that Exporting images from a wedding of 800 or so images takes about 2.5 hours on my G5 Dual 1.8 with 3 gigs of ram. I would really like to speed up the Export process!
I will also be using Photoshop CS3 when it ships. Will Actions that I have written run faster on the 8 Core Machine?
I just need some buying advice.

How much Aperture alone sees today is not so much the point as is what happens with real world performance. Real world it is not just about the theoretical limit of what Aperture sees; apps and the OS/RAM/GPU/CPUs all work together, and folks typically do have more than one app open at a time. My expectation is that although certainly fully functional with 4 GB, the kind of users that run Aperture on a MP will find that greater than 4 GB of RAM is clearly beneficial.
Anecdotal reports also seem to indicate that Mac Pros have an inherent need for more RAM than previous boxes needed.
Also OS 10.5/Leopard is due soon enough that we should be planning new box configurations based on our expectations of what impact Leopard and Aperture v2 will have on RAM utilization. My strong opinion is that we will be able to take advantage of more RAM as 2007/2008 play out.
In any event 4 or 5 (1 Apple plus 4 third party) GB of RAM is an excellent place to start, and RAM always gets cheaper and is easy to retrofit later. IMO we should buy only 2 GB sized DIMMs to facilitate maximum future expansion.

Adding more RAM to Macbook Pro mid-2012

I have a question about adding more RAM to my mid-2012 MacBook Pro (without Retina). I've been doing some video editing with Final Cut, and I'm using quite many apps on the daily basis. I have the standard configuration with 4GB of RAM (2x 2GB) but I guess I should upgrade it, shouldn't I?
I had that idea in mind: buying extra 8GB RAM instead of one 2GB, so I'll end up with 10GB of RAM. If it won't be enough and I'll have some extra money, I will add another 8GB instead of 2GB, so I'll have 16GB.
First question - is it worth it?
Second question - can I add any RAMs supported by Macs? For example I'll leave one 2GB that I have already, and add 8GB made by, let's say, Kingston (I guess they are supported and they have good price in my country). Will this work fine? Does it make sense?

since you’re running Mavericks, open up Activity Monitor while you’ve got your usual selection of apps running, select its Memory tab, and look at the Swap Used setting in the lower left. If it’s displaying “0 bytes” as the amount of swap used, then extra RAM won’t make a difference. Otherwise, to answer your first question, whether it’s worth it or not depends upon how frustrated you are running your usual selection of apps with 4 GB of RAM. It might be that the cost of replacement RAM modules outweighs your level of frustration — only you can make that determination of worth. I would recommend that if you do choose to purchase replacement RAM, that you get a pair of matching modules — either 2 × 4 GB = 8 GB, or 2 × 8 GB = 16 GB, to replace the pair that is currently installed.
For your second question, you don’t have to use Apple-brand RAM, but you do have to use RAM with the same characteristics as your factory-installed RAM uses. Any worthwhile purveyor of RAM for Macs will let you easily locate modules that are compatible with your Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.

Adding USB ports to mac pro

Hi,
i was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to fit more usb ports in the back of the Mac Pro?
I got my mac pro about 4/5 years ago, and could really use some more ports.

Adding optical drive to Mac Pro

I have added RAM & hard drives to my Mac Desktops, including the Mac Pro, but have never messed with the optical drive.
Recently, I decided that I would like to have a second CD/DVD RW drive in the Mac Pro. I have two questions:
1 - can someone recommend a good internal CD/DVD RW drive for the Mac Pro? I mainly do audio CDs, occasionally DVDs, do not need Blu-Ray as of yet.
2 - is there a visual guide for installing an optical drive? If it's as easy as inserting hard drives, it should be a piece of cake.

Be sure to get a drive that uses ATA, such as the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D, not SATA. You need to remove the tray lip.

Apple provides the mounting screws. They are on the back of the metal drive holder. Set the drive jumper to CS (Cable Select). Be careful when putting the drive holder back into the Mac Pro, so you don't nick or pinch any cables.
Eject will open the upper drive. Option-Eject will open the lower drive.

I've got a 1GB stock Mac Pro dual core, and just received a 4GB kit from Crucial.
Unless I'm misreading this technote, I should add 1/2 on one riser and 1/2 on the other.
But, Crucial says they believe both original DIMMS of the existing 1GB are on one riser, and that I should add the new DIMMS on the other riser.
Where should I add the new 4GB RAM?

I have never installed ram and I'm a little afraid, even though everyone tells me it's easy. So I'm here on the site, searching for advice, support, whatever.

Any help/advice/comforting words would be most welcome.

Fully Buffered RAM for Mac Pro 8 Core or will non buffered do?

There are a large number of questions about RAM for the macs on the forum but I can't seem to find the answer to mine any where. Do you think you could help?
Does the new Mac Pro 8 Core require it's DDR3 1066MHz ECC 240 pin DIMM to be Fully buffered or can I use something like this:
