Adding to film clip?

Can I use iMovie 08 to add background music to a film clip that has the existing sound that was recorded when filming?
Rick

Yes, it's designed to work that way and is quite simple - just click on the musical notes icon on the right side-middle of the screen just below the window where you watch your movie. You can open iTunes from there or use Apple's sound effects. just drag the track title over into the project window where yopu want it. There are a couple of places you can drag the music, either pinned to a clip or moveable and you can find help in the iMovie "getting started" pdf that is in iMovie Help. You can reduce the volume of your music relative to the sound on the original tape, and vice-versa.

Everything in your project will be exported when you use the share menu.
If you want to export only half, I suggest that you
    1) Select the project in the Project Library.
    2) Click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT
    3) Give the duplicate a name, like Project A snippet.
    4) Open the duplicate project in the Project editor and delete the segments that you do not need.
    5) Then Share.
You mentioned surrounding a portion of the clip you were editing in Yellow. Once you do this, you should right-click and then select either DELETE SELECTION, TRIM TO SELECTION, or one of the other options available. That is a key tool in editing.
You mentioned MPEG Streamclip. I agree that MPEG Streamclip is a great tool.

Pick a representitive clip.  Adjust it with one of the many tools under the Adjustment tab in the upper right corner.   Good choices are under "Color" and "Lighting".  While the clip is still highlighted, right click and "Copy".  Select the rest of the clips in a group and right click.  Pick "Paste Effects and Adjustments".

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
    1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
    2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
    3. Go to
    Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
    Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.
    Thank you.

  • How can I capture film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder into my computer?

I've captured film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder before so you can understand how frustrated I now feel not being able to do it today. I have just one 30-second clip on the memory card. It plays on my camcorder but I cannot transfer the clip to my computer.
I have an HP desktop computer that's two years old with plenty of hard drive space. I've tried capturing using the memory card inserted into the computer and I've tried using the USB2.0 port. Nothing works anymore. I used to capture with ease using Windows Movie Maker or Photo Gallery.
In the past when the capture was successful I would import the clips into Magix Edit Pro 16 for editing. I could never capture directly into this program though. I hope someone can help me out.

In Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery I click on Import From Device or Import Photos and Videos. A box appears but it is empty. The message above the box is, "if you do not see your device..." click Refresh. Refresh doesn't do it.
When I try to import with Magix Edit Pro 16 (a German video editing program) I get the message: "Magix could not connect to selected device."
I have run out of options. I don't know what else to do. This Friday I'm going to do some filming at a ballroom dance but I'm pessimistic about being able to capture the raw video to my computer.
This is an edit later in the day. Now I can capture into Photo Gallery and then into Windows Movie Maker or Magix. But I can only do this with the USB 2.0 connection. When I put the memory card into the computer slot, nothing happens. It used to work. Anyway, I'm glad I can finally do some practice editing again. I'm just in the learning stage with anything graphic.

  • HT2499 I have a new MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.4. The DVD player does not have a feature to store film clips. Why? This is useful for my work and I had it on my older computer? Why the loss of capacity?

I have a new MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.4. The DVD player does not have a feature to store film clips. Why? This is useful for my work and I had it on my older computer? Why the loss of capacity?

I cannot recall the DVD player ever being a place to "store" videos - it is simply an app to play videos.
If your machine is new, then iMovie should be included as the "shrunk" version of iLife is included with Lion (iMovie, Garageband, and iPhoto). However, iMovie is not a place to store videos either - it is a video editor. You import your clips and edit them in order to then burn to a DVD or share via a social media site.
Have you considered simply dragging the clips to your folder "Movies"? That would be a great place to just store them (please be aware that videos are usually large files, so keep your hard drive space in mind so you keep a minimum free and available for the OS to operate properly):

  • HT4640 Adding a video clip to a keynote presentation - do I have to keep the original video on the camera roll?

I have several keynote presentations that are missing their video clips.  Does the original video clip need to stay on the camera roll after you embed it in the presentation?  I thought not, because when you add a video, a message comes up saying "compressing video" before it gets added.  That made me think that a special compressed version of the original video is made and saved along with the presentation.  I've tried testing this by creating a new presentation, adding a video clip to it and then deleting the original video from the camera roll and the video clip in the presentation was not affected.  You'd think if the clip were linked to a presentation, that iOS would warn you before you delete it from the camera roll.  But I can't think of any other reason why the clips would suddenly be missing from all my keynote presentations.

You can do this with iMovie '06, but not with iMovie '08. You should have iMovie '06 still on your hard disk if you upgraded from iLife '06, or you can download it for free from Apple. Under Editing -> Video Effects, you will find the Fast/Slow/Reverse effect that will do this.

  • HOW: Re-order the film clips to be in chronological order

    iMovie '11
When the clips of my cousin's New Year's Eve '10 fireworks party was uploaded to my iMovie '11, they ended up in scrambled order in the Event Library (the big window to the right of the Event Library). I realize that it is not necessary to have them show up chronologically, but I would like to order them that way.
I do not want to blow this new exciting venture by fiddling with copy and paste or dragging and dropping and then discovering that dropping it meant losing it.
So how can I rearrange those film clips such that they are in correct chronological order? There are not many. Fewer than ten.
P.S. These clips were sent to me via email labeled by the sender 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, etc, so maybe the sender sent them in jumbled order.
    -L

You can adjust date and time by right clicking on the clips in iMovie.
Alternatively, you can rename them in the finder as clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext
where hh is hours in 24 hour time, and ext is the current extension.
When you rename, apply the correct chronological time, even if it is not exact.

  • How to make a photo "fit" with the surrounding film clips?

I am working on a new project in which I have a photo which is "taller" than the other film clips, so consequently, when that clip is playing, one cannot see the top or the bottom because they have been cropped off to match the height of the other film clips.
What can I do to make that picture "fit"? It is important because this is a photo of a person, not just landscape.

  • Unknown error occurred when trying to play film clip in Facebook.

Since the latest update I have problems when I want to watch film clips posted on Facebook.
This only happens with clips that are shown "in" Facebook, if it's a link to a clip outside of Fb it's not a problem.
When trying to watch a clip it says, either directly or various times into the clip, "An unknown error occurred when trying to play a film clip".
if I try over and over again the clip finally plays to its full length but it really annoys me.
    Anybody got an idea?

We got some reports of this lately and as you say, it only happens in Facebook.
Try clearing data for the Facebook app under Settings -> Apps and se eif that helps. If not, please see this thread: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z1-Z1s/Facebook-Videos-not-playing/m-p/727861

  • Imovie locks up/crashes every time I drop a film clip into the project

Almost every time that I drop in a film clip to my current project, iMovie locks up and crashes producing a long readout for Apple.  I've made plenty of projects, but this one is due by Friday. I have to keep waiting to close it and go back in.  Every so often, a clip will drop in perfectly.  Sometimes, just the audio drops in (no video).  This will take forever at this rate!  Any ideas?

You could try converting the clips to DV using MPEG Streamclip, then import the resulting QT DV clips into FCE. In MPEG Streamclip, select Export to QuickTime, then select Compression = "Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC" with a 720x480 frame size. I don't think that selecting "Other" frame size will work, I suspect it would still require rendering once in FCE.
    Alternatives
You could also try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec, selecting the 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) frame size .
You might look into whether your camcorder can downconvert the video to DV during playback, and recapture the video in FCE using the DV-NTSC easy setup.
Provided one of these 3 techniques works, it will be better & faster than rendering your existing video clips in FCE.

  • What pixel size should film clips be?

I'm requesting to have some film clips sent to me, that I will be importing to a film of mine. The person I'm requesting the clips from is asking what pixel size should he send the clip to me in?
He is converting the clips from PAL into NTSC and is asking any format information he need to know before doing so.
    Should I just tell him:
    Frame rate:24
    Dimensions:640x480
    Encoding mode: Multi-pass.
These are the setting I took from quick time movies.
    Does anyone know?

You probably meant to say video not film.
If the material is DV PAL and he is converting it to DV NTSC, he should give you 720x480 29.97fps 48khz/16 bit clips.
