Additions to iTunes library take hours to appear

Mac OS X 10.7.2
iTunes 10.5.1 with iTunes Match on
Whenever I try to add music or movies files to my iTunes library it takes them hours and several restarts of iTunes to appear in the appropriate section of the library.
I should note that songs purchased from the iTunes store exhibit the same behavior, but they are listed immediately in the Purchased playlist.
Has anyone else experienced similar behavior?

No I haven't. I tried almost everything possible but without any remarkable shift. I am about to sell my brand new iPod:(

    Hi shyanne23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If your iTunes library file has become damaged in some way, you may want to try recreating your iTunes library and playlists by following this article:

Did you happen to bring this iTunes library over from a windows machine? You might read this kb article to see if it helps http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

  • ITunes error: "The file iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file."

Every couple of weeks I get this iTunes error after connecting iPod Nano 6th generation. Then it deletes my whole iPod content. I am running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise with latest patches, iTunes 10.2.2.14 and McAfee antivirus.
I tried to reinstall QuickTime + iTunes, clean the system and then reinstall. But this does not work. I also tried to create a brand new library. But no success...
Error: "The file iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has attempted to recover your iTunes library and renamed this file to iTunes Library (Damaged) 3.itl."
    Any idea?

"The file "iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has attempted to recover your iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged).itl"
does enyone know how to fix this for ever?
    thanks.

Katrina, created test, copied ITL (I Tunes Library file?) across, did the shift thing, I Tunes opens with my songs, created a play list, closed I tunes, re-opened it, play list still there. Is that what you mean?
I think I have some other issues as well.
    I Tunes says 2477 songs/485 artists, my I Pod has 300 more.
Windows explorer suggests 589 artists (I keep library organised) I've lost the connection to the "movie" folder.
Also despite songs appearing in the library, they won't play in I Tunes at all. Fine on Ipod (although not docked since this started), fine with other media. players in same location.
Is this a nightmare where I have to delete everything & start again?

  • Why has this occurred The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)".

My itunes library suddenly that the file “iTunes Library.itl” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to “iTunes Library (Damaged)”. I use an external hard drive for my Itunes.

The library file appears to have been corrupted.  You say you use your external drive but is the whole library on it or only your media?  No matter, you will have to rebuild the library file:

  • My iTunes Library takes up just under 18 GB on my eMac, why does it take up almost 25 GB on my MacBook?

Not sure why my iTunes library takes up so much more space on my MacBook than my eMac.

Thanks for the quick answer John!  That kind of leads to my next question.  I am in the market for an iPhone, plus I am currently importing all of my vinyl records to iTunes.  At the rate I am going, it will take up about 30 GB in my MacBook Library, does this number correspond to the iPhone pretty accurately?  My guess is the answer is yes, and I need to go for a 64 GB iPhone, right?

  • Does dragging music into the itunes library take up double the space on my hardrive?

If my music is in my C drive and then i drag and drop it into the music folder in itunes, will that take up double my space on my harddrive?
Same goes if I delete my music from my C drive, will it still say in itunes?

There's a setting that determines what happens. In iTunes Preferences, Advanced tab you can choose to leave the music where it was or copy it to the iTunes library. If you choose to leave it where it was then it will not take up double the space. If you choose to copy it to the iTunes library it WILL take up additional space, but you can then delete it from any other locations.
If you delete music from your C: drive that has already been indexed in iTunes this will confuse iTunes momentarily, but it will recover when you try to play it. The better way to delete music is to delete it in the iTunes library; this will keep things in sync.

  • In the itunes library, a single album appears to be split into two separate parts, how do i combine them?

my itunes library has several albums that are split into two parts. one contains half of the album's songs and the other the other half. how do i combine these so the album only appears once in it's entirety?

Generally setting a common Album Artist will fix things.

  • Why Does my iTunes library take up so much space on my hard drive?

Hi, I have a MacBook (white) and I'm having some annoying problems with iTunes. First, I had about 8,000 songs in my iTunes library. I deleted the songs I don't listen to/don't want anymore, and I deleted about 2,000 songs. I also deleted about 40 home movies that I shot, and all my podcasts. After several restarts and opening and closing iTunes, the space my iTunes folder in my music folder still takes up over 45 GB of space, even though I only have 18 GB of music in my iTunes. Any ideas as to how I can get rid of all the extra files and reclaim some of my much-needed disk space? Thanks in advance!

If you did not see the dialog box asking if you wanted to delete from the hard drive, I think this may be one of those options where you can say "Don't ask again," meaning until you trash your iTunes prefs, it will cease asking the question.
you can bring those dialogs back. iTunes > preferences > advanced > reset all dialog warnings

  • Whenever I click on a song in my itunes library an exclamation point appears and I am no longer able to play this song or video why does this keep happening and what can I do to fix it?

Whenever I click on a song or video in my library and I try to play it, and exclamation point immediately pops up and it tells me that my song or video's origional file cannot be located. It has happened to over 100 of my songs and I would like to know what is happening and what I can do to fix it. Let me know. Thanks!

The usual explanation for this is that:
    1. You have changed the iTunes preferences so that when importing a song the file is not copied into the iTunes media library - doing so is the default.
    2. You have subsequently moved the original file, which iTunes has been using to play your song, and so of course it's lost contact with it.
If 1. is not the case, then the files in the iTunes Library (by default, in (user)/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) may have been moved, deleted or become corrupted. You should check in that library, but don't start moving files in there about. If this is the case you should delete the songs in the iTunes Music list, not in the Finder, and re-import.

  • Getting "The file iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be valid iTunes .."

    Hi there,
    Help please
Windows VISTA Home Premium, with Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz, 2gig DDR2, 300 gig SATA, 512meg nVidia card, dual DVD-RW's, clean install with purchased OEM VISTA from MicroCenter.
Naturally I ran into the VISTA errors everyone posted about, however after uninstalling and reinstalling the newest version, reloading my 600 songs and movies, subscribing to podcasts, etc.. I seem to get periodic errors when opening iTunes - where it states my library.itl files not a valid iTunes library file and marks my file as DAMAGED and I lose my Library. Is this an XML issue? It's very odd because it opens, updates podcasts, plays fine, syncs, then in the morning, I get the error stated above and my librarys hosed and I have to uninstall, clean registry, delete leftovers, try again... only to have it work for a week or so..
    Any guidance would be appreciated!
    Jeff

Hmm.. wonder if this is still applicable - yes I realize it's being done on a Mac ..but it is an old version, but should work in theory (I hope)..

  • Does copying files into the iTunes library take up even more space?

Hi everyone, I recently upgraded to Leopard and decided to give Boot Camp a try so I backed up everything onto my external hard drive using Time Machine and created my partition for Windows. In doing so, I know have an empty iTunes library.
I just copied everything to my hard drive using Migration Assistant, and although all of the files were locked because I didn't have enough "permission", i fixed that problem. However, when I tried to copy all of my itunes folders into my library, it said that I did not have enough space on my computer for it.
Dose copying music into the library use even more space than what it already is? I'm confused, because I thought that if i have the music files in my computer already I don't need to make another copy of it to place into iTunes...or maybe I'm just confusing myself.
Could someone please just let me know how I can add my music into my library? I really don't think this should be so difficult, I'm just terrible with computers. Thanks!

Under Preferences -> Advanced you can uncheck "copy music to iTunes folder", this should fix your problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1498 Is it typical for a rented movie through iTunes to take hours to download?

I rented a movie through iTunes which was paid for without trouble. Now, whenever I go to start the movie, it says it needs at least 4 hours to load. I'm just trying to make sure that this is typical for Apple TV and nothing to do with any problems with the Apple TV.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • Multiple of the same iTunes library appearing in Apple TV

Since I up dated my macbook air (13" Mid 2011) to the developer preview of Yosemite, my iTunes library on apple tv appears twice, some times as many as four times. None of them will connect properly. They usually time out with the standard error ' Could not connect to "### Library" '. My house mates also use Yosemite and there libraries seem to connect just fine. I am now on the 3rd preview of Yosemite, and each have been the same.
My work around for this has to airplay straight from iTunes, which usually works for one episode of something. Which I usually have to quite and restart iTunes as it won;t connect anymore.
Has anyone out there had anything similar and found a fix. I have been searching the net for a while now and haven't found anything.
    ~Tim

I've had the same thing happen to me, also since installing Yosemite beta 3. It's like the Apple TV vaguely knows that my iTunes library is out there, in some way/shape/form, but it's unable to make the connection so that it can interact with the library normally. Almost makes me wonder if there's something iTunes-related in the mix as well...
