Address book images have vanished

This has happened to others, and to me before, there was some solution; does anyone remember what it was?
thanks

David,
You should have a copy of one of your address books that works...
Rather than trying to revert to your previous address book, try this:
1. Locate a copy or copies of your AddressBook.data
(the main file for this lives in your Users/'yourname'/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook.data
2. Try replacing your "AddressBook.data" and then opening up your Address Book. You must quit your Address Book before replacing the AddressBook.data so when you open up the Address Book again, it will read the AddressBook.data that you just put in.
3. You can keep replacing this AddressBook.data until you get the correct one you are looking for. Make sure it is named, "AddressBook.data".....
I always try and keep a copy of this AddressBook.data on a separate computer or external hard drive as a backup. You can even burn this on a CD to keep a copy.
Give that a try and let us know if this worked.

I needed to move my address book from my Mac Book Pro to my Power Mac G5. Here's what I did:
    1. On Mac Book Pro, I did a "Backup Address Book" to FILE 1
    2. On Power Mac I did a "Backup Address Book" to FILE 2 as a precaution
    3. Then I did a "Revert to Address Book Backup" on the Power Mac G5 and selected FILE 1 (the address book from the Mac Book Pro)
    4. Nothing, no records in the address book.
    5. Tried doing a "Revert to Address Book Backup" on the Power Mac G5 and selected FILE 2 (my backup)
    6. Nothing. I don't have the data from the Mac Book Pro nor the original data from the Power Mac G5
What can I do? Now I have no address book records from which to do Holiday Cards. Is this the universe saying Bah-Humbug? Is there any way to fix this problem?

  • Mail App connecting to Exchange via IMAP - Address Book Images

Not a life or death problem, I have multiple accounts in Mail App - some using POP3, Some using IMAP. The IMAP accounts don't show Address Book images at all. The POP3 accounts are fine.
    Odd one, any ideas why?

For the best Mac compatibility with Exchange, I suggest you use Microsoft Entourage, part of Microsoft Office.

  • Address Book Images Folder = 3 gigs and 30,000 files

Can anyone tell me why Address Book's images folder (Library/Application Support/Address Book/Images) gets to take up 3 gigs of space and contain more than 30,000 files? I like to have photos for people and companies in my address book, but I can't imagine why an address book with 354 cards would have a supporting images folder that friggin huge. Is this just bad programming on Apple's part? Using Quicklook, I can see that there are several images that are duplicated with different file names. What actions generate these duplicates? Is there a way to clean up this folder without completely dumping the contents?

    HI Paul,
There's no way that is right.
Your profile indicates you are running 10.4.8 but you posted in the 10.6 Snow Leopard forum? If you have updated to 10.6 please click My Settings on the right side of this page and update your profile. Thanks. (iMac G5... PowerPC)?
Unless you have copy/pasted information for Address Book and contact information from the internet or e-mail, that's the only way I can think that could happen.
I don't see why you can't delete those images if they aren't in use.
If you are running 10.4, try installing the 10.4.11 combo update.

As with any update, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • How to NOT use address book image as user icon?

Is it possible to not use my address book image as the user account icon in MacOS X?

I have the same issue and did not find any work around...
I use my address book on 2 machines (my macbook pro a@ work, my iMac @home).
But I want to have my user access with another icon @work (actually,my company logo)...
Despite removing it from the address book, it keeps on coming back...
    Any hint will be welcome...

  • Which Address Book names have a picture?

Is there any way to easily see which cards in Address Book already have a picture? I was hoping that the tiny icon in the Name column of Card and Column view would change if you already had a picture attached to that card. Some visual indication, like the indicators for whether the card is a person, a company, or My Card. Has anyone found a way to do that?
Failing that, is there any way to persuade a Smart Group to indicate that a Card includes Picture? Or that a Card doesn't include a Picture?
Am I missing some easy way to do this? Haven't found it searching the forum, nor via Google.

If you run this script with Script Editor it will list in the Result pane the contacts with a picture. Remove the "not" from the line "if (count of image of APerson) is not 0 then" if you would prefer a list of contacts without a picture.
    AK
click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">tell application "Address Book"
    set HeadnShoulders to {}
    repeat with APerson in people
if (count of image of APerson) is not 0 then
set HeadnShoulders to HeadnShoulders & name of APerson
    end if
    end repeat
    HeadnShoulders
    end tell</pre>

  • Address Book entries have very strange appearance

Since updating to Leopard, my Address Book entries have a very strange appearance. When I copy and paste them the info is correct, but in the Address Book right-hand window the name (first and last) appears like gobbledigook, as if it was a strange font that is almost like mathematical equations
With my utmost thanks in advance (as ever) if anyone has the answer to this weird problem
    Kind Regards
    Bernard

Thanks a million for taking the trouble to respond Ashka.
I was only reminded of the problem when I opened a web page and saw a similar effect on a couple of lines as I had in my Address Book and having discovered your response, I followed your instructions and on scanning through my fonts, I also turned off "Helvetica Fractions" (as the gobbledigook looked as if it might be fractions). One of these actions seems to have done the trick.
Whilst looking for a particular font a while back, I ended up downloading absolutely hundreds, but it wasn't until I foolishly installed them all that I realised what a mistake I had made, as Word wouldn't even open, as it couldn't cope with the number of fonts. So I had to keep deleting fonts until Word was happy and even now, I still have far too many fonts. I kid myself that I like having so much to choose from, but truth is I am never going to use 90 per cent of them. Moreover, having discovered this problem, I wonder if there are any others in there that are going to cause me problems in the future?
Again, can't thank you enough for your trouble
    Best Regards
    Bernard

  • My email addresses for iCloud have vanished

My email addresses for iCloud have vanished but I have not changed any settings. The only address option is my Apple ID one and it defaults to a none iCloud smtp address and the iCloud smtp is shown as offline?

Did you ever go through the migration process to switch your old MobileMe account to an iCloud account?  If not, then I'm afraid it's too late to do that.

  • How do I stop iChat/Address Book image picker attempting to connect to unavailable server?

I'm using Mac OS X Lion. In iChat, if I click on my personal image then select Modify Image, I get the image picker that allows you to change the image, take a picture from iSight, etc. In Address Book, I can get to this same or similar window when I double-click on the personal image placeholder.
In both cases, a spinner starts up in the lower left corner and after a few seconds I get an error stating that "the connection to server XXXX has failed." This message will pop up continuously until I close the program. The server that it is trying to connect to is a local Mac OS X Snow Leopard server that used to be part of the network but no longer exists.
By setting up a DNS entry to get it to attempt to connect to a server that does exist and using Little Snitch, I've been able to deduce that it is NetAuthSysAgent trying to make a TCP connection to port 139 TCP (netbios-ssn).
First, I find it odd that a Mac program trying to connect to a Mac server would use NetBIOS. I also find it odd that either of these programs would need to connect to the server.
I have a new OS X Lion server but I no longer join to its directory services. As the issue seems to be some configuration left over from when I was connected to that server, I tried joining the new server and then unjoining to see if that would clean up the settings, but that did not help.
    Performing a find . -type f -exec grep -l "<server name>" {} \; revealed two files:
    .viminfo
    ~/Library/Application\ Support/SyncServices/Local/TFSM/com.apple.Keychain/data.syncdb
The latter was a SQLite database that did not revel anything very legible.
I've search high and low for a setting that points to this old server name to no avail.

First off I want to thank you for sticking with me through this, it's nice to have somebody to shoot ideas around with, it made me think up ideas, what I'm trying to say is, by just writing this down in this thread I solved my own problem. Linc I already deleted almost all of the Login items previously, as I did have the same idea, that something in that spot was trying to connect to the desktop through the network, that didn't work, but for some people it could be a problem. When you first mentioned, "make sure that new windows don't open to a folder on the server.", that comment made me look around for any folders connected to the server, then in my last comment I mentioned the word "alias", turns out that was the problem. In my users folder on the Macbook Pro, I had 2 folders that were alias folders, one was the download folder and the other was the Movie folder, I made new folders and put copies of everything into the folders, then threw away the alias folders and renamed the two new folders I created with their original names, presto no more problem.
Must be getting old, cannot remember making any alias folders, but I probably did, probably had some great idea to save hard disk space on the Macbook Pro, only has 250 GB disk, the Mac Pro has over 8 Terebytes of space so I thought I'd use it probably, bad idea, sometimes I get too Geeky for my own good. Again, Thanks Linc for sticking with me on this.
There were interesting ideas on the internet, seems other people have run into similar problems, one suggestion was the terminal to check for any "open processes". link was here, if interested....  http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/25639/why-is-my-mac-constantly-trying-t o-connect-to-another-server
I'm going to mark your last comment as being helpful, as actually all of it was helpful in forcing me to find those pesky alias folders.

  • Address Book "images" folder is 64GB

    Hi..
I am hoping someone can assist me. The "images" folder in "user\Application Support\Address Book\" is 64GB and contains over a million items. All items are photos with random names like "41464863-F2BB-4BF2-9494-8161D45F0312.jpeg". (Not all item have the jpeg suffix.
Looking through the console messages I have identified that the items are created when I sync
8/01/10 8:35:15 AM SyncServer[809] [110f20] |SyncManager|Warning| client com.apple.isyncDU.ipod.A270017485642 not added to plan because it isn't syncing any entities in the plan

If anyone can shed any light as to how I stop this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Alex

The "random" names are UUIDs for the person they are attached to.
I'm not sure how to fix it, but I would consider [resetting sync services|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627].

  • Address Book Images Missing

Almost all of my images in the Address Book have disappeared. The few that are there are the last 3 or 4 I added. When I look in Application Support/AddressBook/Images folder, I can actually find the missing images. However the UUID doesn't match the contact file in the Metadata folder.
    1) What could cause this to occur?
    2) Is there any way to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've had the same thing happen to me, too. I'm guessing it happened sometime in the last few weeks. I can find the folder with the images but they aren't showing up in the address book or mail. What happened?

  • Address Book Images?

Has anyone been able to get their contact images from Address Book to sync with their iPhone?
It appears that in order to have a caller ID image you currently have to take a new one via the iPhone camera unless I'm missing something obvious.

It works for me, but weirdly I checked an entry in favorites and it didn't show, so I went to the Contacts tab and it was there, then when I looked at favorites again it was there. Strange.
I also was able to get contact photos from my synced photos, scaled and cropped, and was surprised to see that the photos thus assigned to the contact synced back to the mac.

  • Address Book and Groups vanished with Mavericks download.  Is there a way to get them back?

Downloading Mavericks caused my Address Book and all associated email Groups to vanish along with all Bookmarks.  Does anyone know of a way to get them back?  I wish I had backups of these items, but it seems to me that the wise and sophisticated designers of Mavericks could have provided for incorporating existing data.
My printer which had been functioning perfectly under Mountain Lion suddenly showed up as disconnected.  By good luck a download of new drivers from HP allowed me to print again.
I am annoyed that Apple did not make Mavericks seamlessly integrate existing data durng the download.
Oh well, it is what it is, so I'd be grateful for any ideas (other than beating me up because I don't have backups - I've already smacked myself around about that!)
    John

    Thanks Guys,
Yes the iCloud seems to be enabled but I don't find a backup for the missing items, or perhaps I don't know how to access it.  I haven't been able to find a way to open the backup files.

  • POP3 Mail & Address Book contacts have gone!

I recently did some housekeeping on my Mum's iBook G4 (OSX 10.4.10), part of which was purchasing and installing SpamSieve into Mail. This all went fine. Today she said all the mail in her POP3 inbox had gone, she couldn't send/receive and all her address book contacts had gone (Except hers and Apples).
I've got the iBook now and have noticed that her account type in Mail has somehow changed to a .Mac account (did I somehow do this, or did she???). This is obviously the root of the problem as the
email address now has '@mac.com' appended to the end and the incoming mail server is now 'mail.mac.com' and the outgoing is 'smtp.mac.com:heremailaddress' which is all wrong. I'm unable to change the account type back to POP or the incoming mail server from 'mail.mac.com' (it's greyed out) back to what it was.
I have now created a second account with the correct POP settings and have received in all unread email, but the read email messages have gone. I am unable to send as the new correct pop account is only offered the incorrect outgoing server ('smtp.mac.com:heremailaddress').
Having read several post on this forum, I feel the Mail/Address Book issues are connected and that maybe the application(s) database(s) have been corrupted. I've tried the Address Book remedy at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5248351&#5248351 but this does nothing. The 'user'>Library>Mail folder shows the two accounts as two separate folders. The recently recreated account folder has the new unread messages in the 'INBOX.mbox folder, but the older account folder (which now has 'MAC-' added to the front of its name) only has 'info.plist' in a 'INBOX.imapmbox' folder!
I don't believe any back-ups are available. Can anyone help me restore her old unread mail, and possibly her address book contacts?
I've also just noticed that SpamSieve does not launch as it should when I launch Mail, even though It was purchased and the scripts installed correctly.

Didn’t you make a backup prior to the housekeeping?
I don’t know why would Spotlight find contacts that are gone from Address Book (if that’s what you mean), but as far as Mail goes, under some circumstances (e.g. lack of available disk space, filesystem corruption, repeated crashes), Mail may discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. This file is where all the account settings are stored. As a result, all the non-.Mac account settings (but not the messages themselves) are lost. If you had a .Mac account, its settings would appear to have been preserved because Mail would set up that account automatically using the System Preferences > .Mac settings.
What’s the capacity and space available on the startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
    You have three options now:
    (1) Restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your mail accounts again (you may want to quit Mail and trash the new com.apple.mail.plist first to start over). If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try trashing the new com.apple.mail.plist and renaming the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Given the circumstances, there exists the possibility that com.apple.mail.plist.saved became corrupt, but that often is not the case and the settings can usually be restored by just renaming the file back to com.apple.mail.plist.
As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.
