Address book not working in mail

I'm using OSX 10.7.4 with Apple mail.  If I try to access addresses in mail nothing happens.  I've tried opening & closing mail but no joy.  I therefore can not get email addresses or my groups to send mail to.  I found this thread & advice 'Quit both mail and address book and delete the file homedirectory/library/application support/address book/AddressBook-v22.abcddb. then start Address Book and then Mail and try.'  However, when I get into application support, address book does not appear and therfore can not delete the file suggested.
Any ideas please.

This didn't solve the problem in my case. When you type the first letter or two of a Group Name, a drop down list of the selectable Groups appears. However, when I press Enter to populate the To box with the Group names, nothing happens. I have a 2009 iMac running Mavericks 10.9, and my mail server is gmail.
some had to hit the space bar, then the enter key. could try that.

    Hey Saint-Georges -
    I've got the same issue in the console.  I didn't notice the keyboard shortcut not working but that's happening to me as well.
    I've gone gone through and repaired the disk and disk permissions.  Still no luck.
    Hopefully someone has a fix.

    Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open AB.

  • "Sender is not in my address book" not working

    Hi
    I don't remember when this first started happening - I know it used to work on my PowerBook. I got my new Mac and set up Mail with a series of simple rules. I have five main accounts (which I have colour coded), and what I want is: if the sender is not in my address book, move to trash and colour the appropriate colour. Simple enough - I have set up five rules; one for each account.
    The rules usually work, but not always, and I can't see a common denominator, ie some from people not in my address book don't get trashed, and some from people definitely in my address book get trashed.
    Any ideas?
    tks

    Hi James,
    Hard to tell if the problem is in Mail, Address Book, or Spotlight, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
    Any change?

  • Address Book Not Working, Tried to Restore still Not Working

    My address book isn't working. You can see what it does by clicking the link to the screenshot below. All menus are grayed out. and when i go into preferences It freeze's then I have to Force Quit. Thankfully I have Back up files of my address book. But even restoring them doesn't fix the problem. I'm thinking the actually Address Book program is messed up. What should I do???

    K Rock XP,
    You may want to try the plist replacement one more time. Make sure that you use the restart option.
    Replacing individual OS X applications is rarely productive in correcting application problems. Unless there is some reason to suspect that you have adversely affected the installation, for now you will be better off pursuing another course of action. Can you correlate the appearance/lack of function with any other event?
    If you create another user account, can you duplicate the behavior of Address Book in that new account?
    If Address Book functions in another account it indicates that it is not a system wide problem, and you may benefit from following the troubleshooting procedures listed in Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption, by Dr. Smoke. Once again, let us know what happens.

  • Group address from Address Book not sending in Mail 2

    I just upgraded from Panther to Tiger, and also upgraded to Mail 2 in the process.
    I discovered some of my old group addresses held in Address Book would no longer link into my emails. When I selected the group name and clicked the To button in the Address Book panel, the group name would appear in the email To line. But when I saved the email and later reopened to send it, the group name would no longer be there.
    After much head scratching I worked out the problem was with full stops being included in some of the group names.
    Remove the full stops and problem goes away.

    Janice Fisher wrote:
    I am having the same trouble but only with groups.  I cannot get them to work in email
    hi...In a new email, just start typing the name of the group in the To, Bcc or whatever, and the full name of the group will show up to choose, choose that name, then hit return and all the names pop in.
    no dragging and dropping, sad.
    or, in a new email, click 'addresses' icon at the top of the e-mail (i customized my email top bar to add this in. you can do this by right clicking on the tool bar. As you can see I have added several things)
    Or that addresses man icon is at the top of the messages....and open that, then choose the group, then click in the name/list area of all the names and select all the names by doing command-A, then choose to click the button at the top left of the Addresses window: to, bcc etc
    As you notice, only the topmost e-mail address, if you have several for a person, will be chosen....to that is different too....could be good, could be bad. I guess one has to rearrange all the addresses to that the top most one is the one you really want to send to
    oh boy
    The only use I see for Address Book, now called Contacts, it ot put the addresses, and to mail one at a time a contact. cant just drag in addresses like before, that i see.
    btw, do you happen to be the Janice Fisher from Scotland?

  • Blue Tooth Synch Issues: Phone to Address Book not Working

    I am trying to synch my contacts from my Sony Ericsoon to my MacBook and running into some issues.
    I can synch the other way with no problems, all the info on my MacBook transfers to my mobile, but not the other way around.
    Example:
    Contact A has two numbers in my cell (one that was synch'd and another that I added manually). When I use iSynch it does not move this number from my phone to the MacBook.
    If I added the number in Address Book and used iSynch it would move it across to contact A.
    I seem to remember a setting where you got to choose whether to accept a MacBook overwrite or a Phone overwrite or it would allow you to review each change before moving/merging daa but I can't seem to find it anymore.
    Any idea's or tips will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

    It's not a problem that is specific to the MacBook but one of iSync. I too had this problem with a Sony Ericsson K700i (and still do I believe) though I haven't tried it recently.

  • Auto-address completion not working on Mail

    Hi, just setting up new iMac. Not a newbie, my MacBook Pro does this fine. I managed to import all my email addresses into Address Book. However, when I compose an email, it won't auto-complete. Yes, I checked the box in preferences. But when I click on the 'address' icon in the New Message window, I see my addressees names, but their email addresses haven't made it in there. Can anyone help? This is the last thing in a windows-Mac switchover then we'll pop the champagne corks.
    thanks

    Hebairt wrote:
    Nope, that doesn't do it. But perhaps I should also delete the Metadata in Address Book? That would be faulty in some aspect from what you say?
    Thanks.
    this would completely delete all your AB contacts. you can try the following. open AB, select all contacts and drag them to the desktop. this will make one big vcard there with all the contacts. then quit AB and delete the whole folder /users/username/library/address book. then start address book. it should be empty (post back if it isn't). then drop the vcard you have on the desktop onto AB. it will imporrt all the contacts back into AB. see if that changes anything.

  • 'Search' feature in Address Book not working

    Hello!
    I had a question about my Address Book and I was hoping someone could offer some help. I'm pretty computer illiterate so I'm sure there is a simple fix I just don't know about. When I use the 'Search' feature in address book on my iMac, it doesn't do anything. On my PowerBook, as soon as I type a letter it automatically begins to sort my contacts, but on my iMac it just isn't doing anything! I have even typed in the full name of a contact and when I hit the 'enter' key it just begins to alphabetically go through my contacts one by one. It isn't a huge thing, just an inconvenience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    ~Thanks!~

    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    If that doesn't fix it, try Spotless...

  • HT4489 address book not loading to icloud?  it works fine in .mac  but not .me com?

    address book not loading in icloud. loads fine in .mac account but .me will not load?

    [email protected] and [email protected] are the same accounts.
    Are you saying that you are trying to sync your contacts to iCloud?  Are the two accounts you  mention ".mac" and ".me" actually different in that they are [email protected]  vs.  [email protected]?  If so, your device can only use one account at once - and you should stick to only one account.

  • LDAP Autoaddressing not working in Mail

    I have LDAP directory services set-up in Mail and it works perfectly when doing look ups directly from Address Book. It was working fine from within Mail at first but I seem to run into times when the autoaddressing feature does not work in Mail at least not using LDAP. I have autoadressing enabled in the Mail preferences and as noted, LDAP clearly functions as I can use it successfully from the Address Book look-up function. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    Matt

    Hi Maria,
    as far I know the application is designed a way, that once there is an empty email this will not be sent at all.
    Could you therefore first test the mail form - you can test it with a business partner with the mkt attributes assigned:
    If this gives an empty mail, with the text elements not available the issue is related to the conditions of the text fields. You then need to check the conditions.
    Alternatively you can try to add any text to the mail form that is displayed independently from the conditions - the mails should then be sent even for the business partners with mkt attributes assigned.
    best regards,
    Johannes

  • HT2486 My address book only displays e-mails. How can I sync it with my i-phone to display the address book the same way as my contacts in my i-phone?

    Currently my address book only displays e-mail addresses. It uses the portion of the address in front of the @ as the name. How can I sync it with my i-phone 4S that has name/numbers and addresses of my contacts?

    Hello there, Seta.
    You are correct that this can be done with iCloud. The following Knowledge Base article provides some great instruction for syncing contacts:
    iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1296
    Particularly:
    Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, and Notes
    You can sync contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and notes with other applications on your computer. This allows you to keep all your information in sync across multiple computers and iOS devices. The settings for these items are all in the Info tab for your iOS device in iTunes. With your iOS device connected to the computer, select your iOS device. Then click the Info tab.
    For details on syncing content on your iOS device with your computer, click the sections below.
    Contacts
    To sync contacts with your computer, choose "Sync Contacts with" within iTunes for Windows, or "Sync Contacts" in OS X v10.8, or "Sync Address Book Contacts" in OS X v10.7 and earlier.
    You can sync your contacts with:
    Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, Microsoft Outlook 2010 (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
    Windows Address Book (Windows XP)
    Windows Contacts (Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
    Address Book (Mac OS X v10.7 and earlier)
    Contacts (Mac OS X v10.8)
    Microsoft Entourage 2004, Microsoft Entourage 2008, or Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac
    Notes:
    When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups. The option to sync selected items may not show up until after the first sync.
    You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
    Additional options for syncing include syncing your contacts with Yahoo or Gmail/Google Mail. You will need to configure it with the user name and password for your Yahoo or Google account.
    Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

                   InternetAddress[] iAddr = null;
                   message.setFrom(new InternetAddress(fromName));

                   //BodyPart messageBodyPart = new MimeBodyPart();
                   Multipart multipart = new MimeMultipart();
                   MimeBodyPart messageBodyPart=null;
    if(dataLocation!=null && dataLocation.equalsIgnoreCase("ATTACHMENT")){
                        String tmpName=fileName;
                        if( inputstream != null)
                                  tmpName = makeAttachment(fileName,inputstream);
                        messageBodyPart = new MimeBodyPart();
                        DataSource source = new FileDataSource(tmpName);
                        messageBodyPart.setDataHandler(new DataHandler(source));
                        fileName = fileName.replace('\\', '/');
                        fileName = fileName.substring(fileName.lastIndexOf('/') + 1,
                                  fileName.length());
                        messageBodyPart.setFileName(fileName);
                        multipart.addBodyPart(messageBodyPart);

    First, when sending your message, the filename should be a simple
    filename, not containing any directory names.
    It sounds like your mail server might be doing some special
    processing of attachments, perhaps to prevent viruses.

    reinstalling the application itself is almost certainly not necessary and won't do anything.
    and you are looking in the wrong library folder. you have to look in the library folder in your home directory not at the top level of the hard drive. your address book data is there. the full path is /users/username/library/application support/address book. try moving this directory to the desktop and starting address book.
