Address book -- turn off phonetic sorting?

In order to make better use of the iPhone 3GS voice control dialing feature, I have add phonetic representations for some of my contacts. However, when I do this I noticed that the address app sorts these contacts by their phonetic spelling. (For instance the name 'Zhou' is pronounced 'Jo', and is sorted under the letter J).
This seems kind of weird default behavior and should at least be configurable. Anyone know some way to do this?
Thanks

Sandy,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I know that this is of little consolation to you, but the Tiger version of Address Book no longer has that annoying interface.
I know of no way to turn it off in Panther.

Address book will no longer sort names when you begin to type

Have you tried resetting your sort option in Address Book / Preferences? Change it from whatever you have it (e.g. First Name) to the other choice. Then try to Search a contact. If it works, then go back in and reset it to what you had it before.

You cannot go back, but you can fix the battery problem, which is NOT an iOS 7 problem. I've had much better battery life on iOS 7 than I have have had in the previous 6 years of iPhones. If you are not then there's something wrong with your phone, not with iOS 7.

  • Snow Leopard Mail Address Book does no longer sort names

    Hi,
I noticed that, after I installed Snow Leopard, the address book I access in Mail does no longer show entries sorted by last names although I set the the address book I access from the dock to do so and it works fine. I thought they're one and the same. How come there is this discrepancy and is there a way to resolve the issue?
    Best
    Frank

    Frank,
The Address Book application opened from the Dock responds to its preference setting for this sort. Quit Mail, and then confirm the sort you want to see in the AB application -- you can choose not only Last Name sort, but whether Last Name appears before First Name, as I am sure you know.
Now relaunch Mail, and when you access from Mail it should now have the same sort you selected in the AB app. Mail is apparently picking up the preference setting in the AB app at the time it launches, and does not change that until you have quit Mail, and then next relaunch it.

  • Address book names are now sorted by first name.

After installing Snow Leopard my mail it is now sorted alphabetically by the first name, not the last. How do I change it back?

I just talked to an Apple Product Specialist about the change in Address Book searching with Snow Leopard. Here is where it stands right now:
In all previous versions of Address Book, the user could simply type 'T' to instantly go to contacts with last names that start with 'T' (and businesses that start with 'T').
In Snow Leopard, Address Book can no longer search with one letter the way it did before; it uses a 'Spotlight' type of search where the user must type the full name in order to get an exact match. This type of searching is useful for finding documents on the Mac or searching the Internet, but is totally inefficient for finding contacts in Address Book.
It sounds like someone at Apple decided this was a better way to search for contacts, because this change in search method is described in the new Address Book 'Help' file; it says, "As you type, Address Book begins to search all the information on the cards, including notes, and displays matching contacts, with the matching text highlighted in each card." For example, let's say someone used to type 'T' to search for a contact named Bill Tilman. Now what happens is that Address Book stops at the first person who's first name starts with 'T', and highlights all the T's in the person's card (the T in 'telephone', the T in 'Street', etc. The user must now scroll through all their contacts manually to find Bill Tilman, or else manually type out the complete name 'Bill Tilman'. (If they just type 'Bill', they will only get the first person named Bill.)
I hope Apple will reconsider and will allow Address Book to do the quick one-letter searches by last name (as opposed to 'Sort' by last name, which it still has) like it used to. (Or at least make this a choice in Address Book Preferences.) This would also be more compatible with the way iPhone searches for contacts; when you select a letter in the iPhone's contacts, it finds contacts who's last name starts with that letter, as well as businesses, just like Address Book always used to.

Not much to work with here...
How about more info so a diagnosis and help can be formulated? Mac model (size), RAM, OS version, age, battery status? What are you doing when it happens? How often? And if you want to be really abundant, pertinent logfiles?

  • Mac Book turning off at will

Hey I have a problem . My Mac (It doesn't have a year yet) is acting really strange recently . I installed Windows XP on it and it was working fine until February - it turned itself off when I was using Windows , after working for only 3 hours . Since then it turns itself off randomly before I reach the log on screen or when it's on for a long time (on Windows) . I thought that it's something wrong with XP , but it did that a few times while on Mac OS X too . Can anyone help me ? (sorry if I made any mistakes , but my english isn't perfect) Thanks in advance for any help

  • Photo Books - turning off default cropping?

I am in the middle of putting a photo book together and I am using the "Picture Book" theme. So let's say that on one page I have selected to have ONE photo which is oriented vertically (potrait). It places the photo in the center of the page and fills the page top to bottom with the pic, and there is white space on the sides.
So WHY in the heck would it crop the top & bottom of my photo? And change it's proportions? Why not just use the original full frame and just have more white at the sides?
Is there any way to fix this or change a setting somewhere? So far I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks!

You are welcome - I'm not sure where that is documented - or if it is

  • Copy contacts from iPhone to Address Book in Outlook

    Hi there,
I'm asking to see whether it's possible to copy contacts from an iPhone to the Address Book in Outlook, reason why I ask is that I am trying to help my Managing Director with his wife's Outlook issue as described in the following link http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-outlook/outlook-cont acts-wont-display-in-address-book/e7c919cd-3e68-4cab-9b21-4e0080827e21?tm=142262 7591302, if so please could you either instruct me on how to do this or to point me to some references on how to go about this.
    Kind regards,
    RocknRollTim

I have the same problem, sort of. When syncing iPhone with Windows Address Book, address entries that have more than one email address, get synced with only one email address. My only work around was to switch syncing address books from Windows Address Book to Outlook 2003. Now that iTunes 4 had messed up iPhone syncs with Outlook 2003's I've done one final sync with Windows Address Book, turn off the sync address feature in the sync window, and manually updated my address entries manually on the iPhone. I hope that Apple fixes this issue with Outlook 2003 soon, cause this is not why I shelled out $599 for a Treo upgrade!

  • Unable to edit "Note:" field in Address Book

I have updated to Mac OS X 10.6.4 one week ago (from 10.5.).
Now for the first, I am trying to edit the "Note:" field of one of my contacts, but I am neither able to add text, nor can I delete text.
I have 47 lines of text in that Note field and wanted to add a few words, but after typing it, it keeps disappearing after a few seconds. If I delete a few lines of text, they keep reappearing after a few seconds.
Editing the Note field (which has less lines of text) in another contact first exhibited the same behavior, but now works flawlessly.
Having the "Edit" button depressed or not, does not make a difference.
Address Book Help says that this happens when there is not enough disk space, but I have over 41GB left.

    Hello Marcus and others,
I have experienced the same issues with my Address Book (version 5.0). First things first, let me suggest you complete a back up of your address book:
    1. Go to the File drop down menu
    2. Click on Export
    3. Select *Address Book Archive* from the 2 choices
    4. Choose where you would like to store this back up. Let's just say the Desktop for now.
    5. Disclaimer, any unsaved data will be lost during this reset, so please back up all files you will need.
    6. After you have successfully archived your Address Book, turn off your computer.
    7. Now here's the important part, hold down the power button for at least 6 seconds or until you hear a loud sound or tone. This should reset your settings back to default.
This is how I just fixed the problem with editing the Notes of my contacts in my Address Book 5.0
Good luck and I hope this helps someone.

  • Vanishing Address Book!

I recently 'lost' my Address Book. No problem restoring it by importing back up, but it almost immediately vanishes again. This, of course affects MobileMe Addresses, so have had to stop syncing. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I am also having this same problem. It first appeared on August 5, and since then I have "lost" the complete contents of my Address Book (2553 entries) a total of three times.
Originally I had sync'ing with MobileMe turned on (to update my iPhone) and was also sharing my Address Book with a colleague (read-only access).
After the first loss (which was on my MBP only, had not affected MobileMe), I was able to recover by turning off MobileMe sync'ing and using iTunes to recover my the Address Book on my MBP. I re-established MobileMe and had all three copies in sync.
The second loss cleared the Address Book on my MBP, also MobileMe and my iPhone. Apparently whatever had decided to delete had propogated. I had to resort to Time Machine to recover, and this involved physically copying the /user/library/application support/addressbook directory from backup to my HD.
(Interestingly, Time Machine will not restore my address book entries within Address Book. It looks like it will work, I can open Address Book and then enter Time Machine, go back to a point where my Address Book had entries, select all and Restore All, but I only get 11 entries restored. WEIRD ITEM #2. May be related? I haven't a clue.)
Last night it happened again. I have now stopped sharing my Address Book, turned off MobileMe sync and have sync'ed my iPhone with iTunes.
I'd love to know a cause for this problem. I've run Disk Utility to Verify HD, also Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions, then restarted and downloaded the current software update. There were disk permission problems found and fixed.
Do I have a corrupted Directory on my HD? If so, how can I check it?
    Thanks,

  • Addresses vanishing - address book doing odd things

I am running a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with 2 GB SDRAM - version 10.5.8 software. Yesterday, all y my addresses in address book disappeared. I was not syncing them up, I don't have a MobileMe account. I just opened up my address book and all the names and addresses were gone. I do sync up with my Verizon Palm Treo via the "MissingSync for Palm OS." But, I was not in the process of synching or backing up anything. Then just now, I noticed that suddenly all my addresses were duplicated - again, I had done nothing, clicked nothing accidentally. The only thing that I have been attempting to do is to create a new Smart Group with all my Friends in it. Is it possible that this is creating this odd behavior? I am about to repair permissions but I have never experienced anything like this - any ideas? Thanks.

  • 'Sort by last name' not working in Address Book

In Address book, the 'sort' function (under preferences-General) does not work for half my contacts (all people rather than companies). This does not work for 'by first name', nor 'by last name'. This random list appears at the top of address book, followed by properly sorted entries.
Curiously, the most recently inputted entries do sort properly, as do all company entries.
    On MobileMe, everything sorts properly
On my iPhone address book, the same problem, except the random unsorted list now appears after the properly sorted entries (under the category #)
Is there any reason why this is happening, and any fix for this?

Curiously, the most recently inputted entries do sort properly, as do all company entries.
Does that mean "most recently inputted" AFTER you upgraded to Snow Leopard?
If that is true, it would mean that something about your existing records before the upgrade, for the records that are people contacts (with first and last names) instead of business contacts, do not agree with Snow Leopard and/or Snow Leopard's version of Address Book.
This may not be feasible, but if you exported the records with this problems and then imported them, maybe they will be re-inputted so that are properly sorted.
If you use Time Machine, maybe you can use the +flying through space+ interface to restore one of the records with this problem to see if the restore process makes the record sort properly.

Could it be some sort of field issue with the encoding? When viewing on the Mac what screens are you viewing on? Won't they be non interlaced by their nature whilst a tv would be interlaced? Just thinking out loud here as to what might be the cause. We use pre-encoded assets all the time and (unless something has drastically changed in the latest SP- why?) it definitely doesn't re-encode pre-encoded assets.
I would have thought if it was re-encdoing you would be likely to see blocking than interlacing anyway...
Try re-encoding a small section - preferably one where you are seeing the interlacing issue worse - with some different settings in Cinemacraft and see if you can trac it down that way perhaps
