Address book vanished

After years of use, my address book has vanished. At least it seems that way. Mail, Skype, etc still find the required data but the disk image is gone and I cannot access the book to add or edit.
I tried updates and apps from the original OS disk that came with the MacBook. I cannot find anything to help.
Please tell me I do not need to reinstall from the original OS which dates back nearly two years.

I'm not sure what disk image you are talking about. Disk images are ".dmg" files that mount as a virtual drive on your desktop when you double-click on them.
It's not quite clear to me, either, whether you mean that your Address Book data is gone or whether there is no Address Book application in the Applications folder (or anywhere else, as near as you can tell, on your hard drive). If that is indeed what you mean, you will have to go to the original Leopard installer DVD but you don't need to boot up from it. There is a folder called "Optional Installs" on the DVD and in it, an installer named "Optional Installs.mpkg." When you double-click on the package installer, you will get to a point where you see "Custom Install on {Your Computer}". Click on the "▸" to the left of Applications then click on Address Book checkbox then continue. After Address Book has reinstalled, download and reinstall the 10.5.8 combo update which can be obtained from http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
IF you mean that you can't find your personal Address Book data, all I can say is that data should be located at /Users/{yourShortUserNameHere}/Library/ApplicationSupport/AddressBook. If it's not, see if you can find a file named "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" (I think that is a common filename for a file in everybody's Address Book data) somewhere on your hard drive. Hopefully, you will find all the other accompanying data files and data folders nearby.
Once you recover (or recreate) your address book data, I would urge you to make portable backup suitable for any sort of address book application, Mac or Windows alike, and for any version of OS X and architecture (PPC or Intel). Simply select all address cards from the Address Book application window and drag it to your desktop. It will create a text-based file named something like "Alice Ames and 89 others.vcf." Double-clicking on it will import all those address cards into any address book application of any OS version and any platform that understands VCF format. A handy thing to have lying around in emergencies.

  • Is there a way to import only the Address Bookfrom OE into TB? When I started to import my full data, I clicked Cancel, TB crashed, & my Address Book vanished.

Hi, I am in the process of migrating from Outlook Express 6 to Thunderbird. Thunderbird made the migration very easy, a click of an "Outlook Express" radio box selection for import. But then I made it hard on myself by deciding I wanted to fix an OE .dbx folder-file (make it importable, previously not imported likely because it was marked "read only" and then re-import. I started to re-import OE into TB but then got nervous when I saw everything was importing, not a single dbx folder-file I wanted to fix. I clicked "Cancel" in TB, and then, when I later opened TB, noticed that my Address Book now is empty. It was definitely full before. Any ideas how to import strictly my contacts again? I am thinking of importing my entire OE data again if the answer to that post is that the re-import will not result in double OE line items. If I re-import all of OE, my Address Book should reappear, too, right?

Oops, I found the answer to my question. Great knowledge base! I had originally imported via the automatic popup dialog box that appeared when I installed TB, and didn't absorb at the time that there would be a way to do an import later, after TB install, too, and even for specific parts of OE (address book vs. mail messages, etc.).
I pasted the link to the "Migrate to Thunderbird" page that includes how to migrate just an Address Book from OE, but the following is all that pastes in: 9723729938
I have typed out the link here:

  • Contact Pictures in Address Book Vanish When dragged to Exchange Server ???

Forgive me in advance if this has been solved and then please direct me to the right link - however this problem is really becoming a deal breaker for me because so much of my intranet software pulls from contact images
I have a brand new Macbook Pro clean installation and after setting it up I linked it to my 07 Exchange server and pulled down my contacts it worked flawlessly and i thought all was well - Every field including the notes section and pictures transferred.
Then when I edited pictures in address book contacts under the on my mac section and copied them to my exchange address book the contact transfers but the picture is missing - after the initial transfer of contacts from my exchange server it happens vice versa also if i take a contact on my exchange server with a picture and drag it to address book (in the address book application) it deletes the picture
Alot of my applications pull from my exchange contact database and I rely heavily when replying to calls or messages at looking at the picture when it pops up on my screen
Apple support said they are sort of aware of this issue and there is a work around but they dont know what it is ??? and recommended that i ask on the forum
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated Im at my wits end or does address book just not work right ? - Oh and one more thing when clicking on a contact on the exchange server from address book i can edit a contact but i cant edit the picture field either
    Someone tell me something'
    Thanks

I'm having the exact same problem... worked fine until I did a clean install Last week.
anyone figured out a fix or workaround ?

  • Switching from Entourage to ical, mail, and address book- duplications?

I am tired of the slowness of Entourage and was thinking of switching to all of the native mac programs. Any suggestions or comments on whether this is a good idea or not?
Also, will all of my information be duplicated. I have about 3 gigs of information and I don't want to needlessly store it if I don't need to. Can I get some advice on where to find and extract that information from the entourage program so I am not eating up disc space unnecessarily.
    Thank you.

Three weeks ago I switched from Entourage and Palm Desktop to Apple mail, address book and ical. It was a tad painful because I ended up with a lot of duplicates as I had email and some contact info in Entourage and several thousand contacts in Palm Desktop.
However after a couple of solid nights sorting out the duplicates all the contact info for each person is now in one place.
Word of warning though when you are checking address book entries make sure you keep backing up the changes (File - Backup address book) because for some inexplicable reason a couple of times all the entries in address book vanished.
Also the check for duplicates option in address book might be great for some but for me it created contacts that had their addresses and phone numbers duplicated several times.
After initial teething problems (getting used to the different programs) I am now pretty happy with the changeover. I am ecstatic to not be seeing the constant Entourage error message of 'your database is damaged and needs to be rebuilt' which entourage kept throwing at me (even after repeated rebuilds).
I have a Palm Treo and Address Book and iCal sync fine with that as well (after installing the conduit).
You'll also find in mail that you can't do as much snazzy formatting as you could with Entourage (ie numbered lists and bullet points) but hopefully Apple will address that in later updates. In the meantime if I'm desperate for formatting I write the email in rtf and paste it across complete with bluet points.
Sorry to drone on but wanted to give you some moral support.
Oh by the way the entourage data is stored in Home folder - Documents - Microsoft User Data - Office 2004 Identities - main identity - database (almost need a compass and flashlight to find it). To be on the safe side burn it to a dvd just in case and then trash it and all it's little friends (rules, lists, signatures and the other main identity folders.
    Good luck

  • Address book entries vanished

I was updating my address book and moving contacts into new groups when my entire list of contacts and all groups vanished. Spotlight does not reveal any vcards or contact files on the hard drive. A telephone call to technical support was not helpful. I do have a backup file prior to the new entries, but this is puzzling. Any ideas as to how this can happen?

Since posting this message, I visited the Genius Bar in the Tampa, FL store. My lost contacts were quickly located and restored. Is there a comparable value anywhere on the planet to the quality and unlimited one-on-one technical support available through Apple'sn ProPlan at the Apple stores. At $99 per year, it is a steal. And there is nothing like it in the Windows world.

  • Address Book and Groups vanished with Mavericks download.  Is there a way to get them back?

Downloading Mavericks caused my Address Book and all associated email Groups to vanish along with all Bookmarks.  Does anyone know of a way to get them back?  I wish I had backups of these items, but it seems to me that the wise and sophisticated designers of Mavericks could have provided for incorporating existing data.
My printer which had been functioning perfectly under Mountain Lion suddenly showed up as disconnected.  By good luck a download of new drivers from HP allowed me to print again.
I am annoyed that Apple did not make Mavericks seamlessly integrate existing data durng the download.
Oh well, it is what it is, so I'd be grateful for any ideas (other than beating me up because I don't have backups - I've already smacked myself around about that!)
    John

    Thanks Guys,
Yes the iCloud seems to be enabled but I don't find a backup for the missing items, or perhaps I don't know how to access it.  I haven't been able to find a way to open the backup files.

  • Is there a way to recover old emails? I moved a few folders around on the hard disk and now my emails have reverted to Factory settings and all my old emails and address book have vanished. I am still running on 10.4.11 and Apple can not help me.

Is there a way to recover old emails? I moved a few folders around on the hard disk and now my emails have reverted to Factory settings and all my old emails and address book have vanished. I am still running on 10.4.11 and Apple can not help me. Does anyone out there have any idea on how to recover my lost emails and/or addresses?

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question.  Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).

  • Vanished Address Book data

iMac running OSX10.2.8, Mail 1.2.5, and Address Book 3.03. Yeah, yeah, I know - a bit dated, but it works for me (I can remember using punch-cards, dangling chads and all!). Address Book (AB) has run flawlessly for long time. Opened AB earlier today and it was empty. ALL addresses vanished. Only a blank AB window saying ""No Card Selected". Considered doing "Revert To Backup Database" under AB File menu, but didn't since it is non-reversible step and I didn't want to risk losing address file - if it still exists. Used Finder to locate "addressbook" files. Several were found in Users/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (AddressBook.data, ABPerson.index, AddressBook.data.previous, etc.), all about 150-300KB in size and w/ todays or very recent (last address addition) dates. Opened files w/ Text Edit and recognized many AB names & emails amongst all the "gibberish". No clearly complete, coherent AB file. Have rebooted (no effect) and run Norton Util (no problems found). Considered reinstalling AB, but hesitant to do so until I'm sure it will not write over/delete old address file - if it still exists. Any suggestions on where AB data file might be and how to restore it to my AB - short of re-entering all the data (couple hundred names, emails, phones, etc.)? Thanks for any & all help!!!
    iMac Mac OS X (10.2.x)

you can try the revert command, but it may not work. it sounds like the data is corrupted, and reinstalling might be the only thing that will work for that. you could also try moving the file addressbook.data to the desktop and renaming it to addressbook.data.old or somesuch thing. then rename the addressbook.data.previous file so that it reads addressbook.data. (this is in application support<address book, if you don't know, i imagine you've been looking at these files). hope that is helpful. [ 8 ) ]

  • Vanishing Address Book!

I recently 'lost' my Address Book. No problem restoring it by importing back up, but it almost immediately vanishes again. This, of course affects MobileMe Addresses, so have had to stop syncing. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I am also having this same problem. It first appeared on August 5, and since then I have "lost" the complete contents of my Address Book (2553 entries) a total of three times.
Originally I had sync'ing with MobileMe turned on (to update my iPhone) and was also sharing my Address Book with a colleague (read-only access).
After the first loss (which was on my MBP only, had not affected MobileMe), I was able to recover by turning off MobileMe sync'ing and using iTunes to recover my the Address Book on my MBP. I re-established MobileMe and had all three copies in sync.
The second loss cleared the Address Book on my MBP, also MobileMe and my iPhone. Apparently whatever had decided to delete had propogated. I had to resort to Time Machine to recover, and this involved physically copying the /user/library/application support/addressbook directory from backup to my HD.
(Interestingly, Time Machine will not restore my address book entries within Address Book. It looks like it will work, I can open Address Book and then enter Time Machine, go back to a point where my Address Book had entries, select all and Restore All, but I only get 11 entries restored. WEIRD ITEM #2. May be related? I haven't a clue.)
Last night it happened again. I have now stopped sharing my Address Book, turned off MobileMe sync and have sync'ed my iPhone with iTunes.
I'd love to know a cause for this problem. I've run Disk Utility to Verify HD, also Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions, then restarted and downloaded the current software update. There were disk permission problems found and fixed.
Do I have a corrupted Directory on my HD? If so, how can I check it?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Address book entries have vanished

I needed to move my address book from my Mac Book Pro to my Power Mac G5. Here's what I did:
    1. On Mac Book Pro, I did a "Backup Address Book" to FILE 1
    2. On Power Mac I did a "Backup Address Book" to FILE 2 as a precaution
    3. Then I did a "Revert to Address Book Backup" on the Power Mac G5 and selected FILE 1 (the address book from the Mac Book Pro)
    4. Nothing, no records in the address book.
    5. Tried doing a "Revert to Address Book Backup" on the Power Mac G5 and selected FILE 2 (my backup)
    6. Nothing. I don't have the data from the Mac Book Pro nor the original data from the Power Mac G5
What can I do? Now I have no address book records from which to do Holiday Cards. Is this the universe saying Bah-Humbug? Is there any way to fix this problem?

    David,
You should have a copy of one of your address books that works...
Rather than trying to revert to your previous address book, try this:
    1. Locate a copy or copies of your AddressBook.data
(the main file for this lives in your Users/'yourname'/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook.data
    2. Try replacing your "AddressBook.data" and then opening up your Address Book. You must quit your Address Book before replacing the AddressBook.data so when you open up the Address Book again, it will read the AddressBook.data that you just put in.
    3. You can keep replacing this AddressBook.data until you get the correct one you are looking for. Make sure it is named, "AddressBook.data".....
I always try and keep a copy of this AddressBook.data on a separate computer or external hard drive as a backup. You can even burn this on a CD to keep a copy.
Give that a try and let us know if this worked.

  • All my contacts in Address Book suddenly vanished

    Hi,
I was updating a contact in Address Book, (usual story, new address and email address arrived in a Christmas card), and when I clicked on the 'save' button my address book window suddeny lost all it's data. The page I was updating, which had previously been showing the contact details, now showed as 'No card selected' And at the bottom of the window it said '0 cards'
All my groups were showing as having nothing in them either.
Any ideas how I might get all my contact data back, please?
(I have a feeling that the data is there somewhere, because if I start to write a new email message auto-complete remembers and fills in the address. (Which it gets from address book, doesn't it?)

    Update:
I have used Time Machine to replace the Address Book app with the app that was running satisfactorily a few hours ago, but it has made no difference whatever. I still have a completely blank book.
Is there a data file somewhere I could re-load using Time Machine?

  • Address Book contacts vanished - help!

I'm hyperventilating....my entire Address Book contact list has disappeared, four years' worth of critical info! I'm hoping someone can help me find/recover the data on my iMac.
Background: Last night, some of the apps on my iMac froze for an unknown reason. I was using Safari, left for a bit, came back and all of the Mac apps - Address Book, Mail, iCal, etc. had stopped responding. I Force Quit out of them, and rebooted my Mac. Mail and iCal were fine, all data still there.
Didn't use Address Book until just now - I opened it and it's empty - just the default 'new' data file that has my basic card and the Apple card. EEEKKK! I have years of irreplacable data in that missing file. What happened? I've never had such a problem in the 3 years I've had this Mac and system. Someone help ASAP, please! I have no addresses to send mail, no key business data or anything!
The Address Book app is still there, and the data folder has these files: ABPerson.skIndexInverted (292 kb, yesterday 9:51 pm), ABSubscribedPerson.skIndexInverted (8 kb), AddressBook.data (32 kb, today, 12:32 pm), AddressBook.data.previous (yesterday 9:53 pm), plus Images folder.
Thanks in advance if you can save my sanity and data.
    Abby

Well, if it's not being found thwn it's likely some kind of Disk corruption, the files may or may not still exist, but if the OS or other APPs can't find them then it's very likly the space those files use has been freed for use in writing to the Disk, which OSX does far too often.
    a virus or something?
    Not likely a virus.
And, what am I supposed to do next if I do recover from another computer (all I have is a PC laptop...)?
Cannot be done from a PC, sorry.
Am I just looking to find the Address Book file?
    Yes, mostly.
    more panicked than before....
Very sorry to be the messenger here, but if that stuff is important to recover, I've given you my best advice... You need another Mac, or another HD to install to, boot from, try to recover to.
If I can or need to explain it better/clearer please let me know.

  • Addresses vanishing - address book doing odd things

I am running a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with 2 GB SDRAM - version 10.5.8 software. Yesterday, all y my addresses in address book disappeared. I was not syncing them up, I don't have a MobileMe account. I just opened up my address book and all the names and addresses were gone. I do sync up with my Verizon Palm Treo via the "MissingSync for Palm OS." But, I was not in the process of synching or backing up anything. Then just now, I noticed that suddenly all my addresses were duplicated - again, I had done nothing, clicked nothing accidentally. The only thing that I have been attempting to do is to create a new Smart Group with all my Friends in it. Is it possible that this is creating this odd behavior? I am about to repair permissions but I have never experienced anything like this - any ideas? Thanks.

  • How to restore iCal and Address Book from my iPod mini.

I used to back-up my iCal and Address Book to both my Nokia phone and my iPod mini twice a day. then over Christmas my laptop hard drive and my phone both broke within 2 days of each other. Ouch! My only copy of my addresses and diary are now on the iPod. I could spend days reading the data and type it into to computer manually, but there has to be a way to do it automatically. *Mustn't there?*

    Similar problem here,
I have a month-old archived version of my AddressBook, but today my entire rolodex vanished when the program froze and I force quit. I have a much more recent update on my ipod and have made significant additions/editions in the past month. Can I retrieve all that data from my iPod??
