Address Book won't open (without crashing) in Snow Leopard

OK, I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but I have yet to get Address Book to work successfully since upgrading to Snow Leopard. When I click on the icon, the Address Book window appears, says I have "0 cards" (when, of course, I have many more than that), and then before I can take any action (i.e., click on anything), the spinning beach ball appears. This has occurred even after restarting the machine and attempting to move the preference file out of the user Library.
Any thoughts on this?

I am having the same problem with mail and addressbook - both upon launching result in spinning beach balls - requiring force quit. I have seen and tried to remove the preference files related to address book, as well as the smart groups to noavail - also noted is my laptop now runs incredibly hot and battery performance is markedly degraded.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy / paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file to the Trash.

  • My address book won't open after installing Lion. Has this happened to anyone else?

I recently upgraded to Lion and couldn't be more pleased, except that my address book won't open now. It just bounces and then gives up and sends an error report to Apple. Please help.

I have the same problem. Has anyone solved this problem?

  • Apple Address Book Won't Open

On my iMac G5, my Apple Address Book won't open. It has been working perfectly and I've never had a problem since buying the computer about a year ago. Though the name appears on the top menu bar and the triangle shows beneath the Address Book icon on the Dock, nothing appears on the screen. I ran the Disk Utility Repair Permissions, but aht didn't correct it. I've rebooted and that didn't solve the issue either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
I don't know how to troubleshoot Address Book, other than replacing its data with a backup copy if you have one, or just getting rid of that data. Address Book stores the preferences in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist, and everything else in the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder.
You may try moving those files out of there, to the Desktop. You may try removing just the com.apple.AddressBook.plist preferences file (so that Address Book re-creates it again), for example, or removing just AddressBook.data and renaming AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data. Whatever you do, make a backup copy of those files first, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • 10.4.7 update and now my Address Book won't open

I recently ran a software update and the Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 errored out. After the required restart I now find my Address Book won't open.
Any advise to fix this problem?
Is it safe to run the 10.4.7 update again or will this problem repeat?

    hi there--
i would check out this thread. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1863756&#1863756 basically, try repairing permissions first. then if that does nothing, see if you have your addressbook.data file. it's possible you could rename a file like this user to regain your info. if the addressbook.data file is there, select it and get info on it by pressing the apple and i on the keyboard. ensure that you have read/write access to the folder. make yourself the owner and make the rest of the fields as open as possible. also, if the address book launches in a different user (you could create a test user) you could do a number of things. if you have a backup of the address book in another place you can try pulling the com.apple.addressbook.plist from the preferences folder in the home user library. do not do this if you have no backup. also you could check ~library/address book plug-ins. if there's stuff in there, try pulling folder to desktop and restarting the computer. keep me posted as to whether or not you make any progress. Because it's incompatible. You need to upgrade to version 2.1.4 or newer.

  • ICal, Mail, and Address Book won't open

When I open Mail, iCal, or Address Book, the application bounces a couple times in the dock and then immediately closes. Any idea what might be causing this and how I can fix it?
I've repaired file permissions and that didn't work. I also tried (as suggested in another forum) removing the folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook , to no avail.
Immediately before this problem occurred, I ran PACE's repair prebinding script (I need to do this occasionally to run Pro Tools on 10.4.10), but I'm not sure if that's related. I've run the script a few times before without any problems.

  • Address Book will not open.  Crashes with Kern_Protection_Failure.  OSX 10.6.8

I have a Time Machine backup, but since the software won't load, I can't use it.
Any Suggestions as to where I start troubleshooting?

Thanks ever so much for replying!
Thanks to your comment about a possible hardware problem, I ran Disk Utility
and it did report a hardware fault.
I finally found and used my install disk to run Disk Repair which reported
that the hard drive was okay; there wasn't any indication that it had actually
done any repair, but then I don't know if silence was significant...
At any rate, I finally unraveled the mysteries of Time Machine and did a
restore.  And am much relieved to report that the problem has been resolved!
Address Book and all the Apple programs that touch it are now working properly.
Here's the oddity:  although Address Book and every Apple program that accessed
it was crashing, I do have an antique label-generator (bought in the days before
Address Book could print labels!), and it was able to access almost all of the
Address Book data.  There were a few groups that caused it to crash.  So maybe
some data wound up written to a bad disk address.
At any rate, I'm now a happy camper and much appreciative of your helping hand!
    Thanks again....

  • Address Book won't open.

A friend of mine has an old iMac G4 (10.3.9)
    http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/597/imacg41039qq2.jpg
And he just recently bought the latest Macbook, and wanted to transfer all his files over, so I talked him through it, and everything worked fine.
Except he was having an issue with transferring his Address Book over, it was just a case of not knowing how to do it.
So I popped over to his place, and just as I was about to export I noticed all his (100's) address' were duplicated 8 times each!
So I suggested to Merge them all before we do the export, so we selected ALL and clicked on Merge.
Then we got the "Spinning Beach Ball" and I wasn't surprised, as the machine only has about 256MB RAM, I figured it would take a while to process.
But right then, unfortunately there was a power cut in his block for 30 minutes!
When everything came back on we were unable to open the address book!
It bounced once, and then nothing, I could see the small black arrow under the Address book icon in the dock, but there was nothing.
So, this is what I tried to do:
1 - I shut the machine down and restarted holding down the options-command-P-R keys all at once, did the 3 chimes in order to reset the Pram, but no luck.
2 - I took the Address Book out of the Applications Folder and onto the desktop, and tried to open it from there, but still no joy (so I put it back).
3 - I ran 'Disk Utility' which showed nothing.
4 - I went into mail, and was able to open up the email address book there, but I couldn't see the physical real home address' which is what my friend really needs.
And the 'Start Up' 10.3 Install disks got lost long ago, I think!
So now we're stuck. I'd just like to get this whole address book out of this iMac and into the new Macbook.
The intention is to clear the machine up, and pass it on to a younger member of the family as a free gift (in good working order).
I'm sure there must be a way around this, and if anyone can help I'd be very, very grateful...
Right now I'm getting looks from my friend of "I thought you knew what you were doing?" LOL :-D

    Hi Tom,
First of all, I'd like to thank you for taking time out to help.
But sadly +(or maybe stupidly)+ he never backed up his Address Book!
I tried what you suggested, but no application would open that 'data file' on the iMac, I then copied it to the desktop of the MacBook, and I had the same problem, I'm just unable to open it!
If you have anymore suggestions, I'd be very grateful?
    K.

  • Address Book won't open in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
    I have Snow Leopard 10.6.1
When I try opening my address book I get the message: "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Address Book 4.1.1."
    How can this be?
This is not quite an emergency since I still have access to my address book through Mobile Me, or my Entourage address book, but still.
    Anybody understand this issue?
    Thanks

Hey guys I had the exact same problem as you did and didn't find the fix until opening the Guest Account wiped my entire profile. (seen in the Login forum)
From what I can tell, you need to make a new user account for the Contacts application to work, as it replaces it with a new version (5.0), if you don't want to copy over all your files to a new account you could try copying over Contacts 5.0 to your other users Documents folder, then copying it from there to the Applications folder on your old user.
    Hope I've helped

  • How to Open Address Book from 08 in 09? or Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8, I seemed to have lost the majority of my contacts in Address Book.  However, I saved the Address Book on a flash drive....which now when I try to open that, it says "This version of Address Book is not compatible".  How am I suppose to open it?
    Many thanks.

Most likely, one of these is the culprit.
    com.sophos.kext.sav    8.0.14
    com.waves.driver.soundgrid    2.0.0
Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by  Rember.  See

  • I cannot access my address book now that I have updated to Snow Leopard.

I bought Quickbooks 2012 for the Mac, which required that I update my OS to Snow Leopard (at least.)  So I purchased it online (not available at apple stores anymore.) And Installed it.  Then I went to apple and got the free updates and installed them.  Now I cannot use my address book.  A message comes up that says " You can't use this version of the application Address Book.app with this version on Mac OS X. You have address Book.app 4.1.2"  HELP!  All my personal and business contacts are in there and predictably, I need them.

Can you open Contacts and edit, insert, and delete cards, or does it fail to work, also?

  • Bento won't open after upgrading to Snow Leopard?

Bento will not open since installing / upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6 -- just simply tries to start up and quits immediately. Any suggestions other than trashing the existing application and restoring / reinstalling from my original software discs that came with my new Mac Book Pro laptop? It was working just fine prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard yesterday.

Download the updated version of Bento to use the application with Snow Leopard. This should fix the problem!

  • IPhoto won't open avi files in Snow Leopard

before I instaled Snow Leopard clicking on an avi file in iPhoto opened the file in Quick Time. After installing Snow Leopard I either have to put them on the desktop, or drag them onto Quick Time. Any ideas how to make iPhoto work with Snow Leopard?

I am having the same problem.
Open iPhoto 08 - click on video and nothing plays - went to original file and changed default application to iPhoto - then clicked on video in iPhoto and get error message with file cannot be read - changed default back to Quicktime and still cannot play in iPhoto like before.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
