Addressing another mac over LAN

Hi,
I have scripts I want to run in crontab - they run fine. but I don't know how!
I am rsync'ing files from one mac to another. Both macs have the same naming on their two disks.
i.e. both have /Volumes/Work
I have to use /Volumes/Work-1 to access the other mac.
I don't understand what protocol is used for this LAN sharing. I am confused as i have three macs and all have a /Volumes/Work drive... so how does it know which one to access?
It's easy with SMB, as you actually address the IP of the remote machine... or rsync using [email protected] - but this method of just using two paths is hard to understand.
So, if I don't first open finder, and browse to the remote mac, to setup the relationship, how could I address the /Volumes/Work path on the remote mac (given that the local mac also has the same path)
Steve

figured out myself
mkdir /Volumes/Work-1
mount_afp afp://user:[email protected]/Work/ /Volumes/Work-1

  • Wake another mac over airport

is it possible to wake a sleeping mac over airport to enable file sharing etc, possibly with 'remote desktop' which ive just started using, [without much success so far to be honest]. i've heard it isnt possible, only with a wired ethernet connection. It would be so useful and convenient if it was possible to both wake and sleep my other mac via my laptop over airport.
in the systems prefs, under energy saver theres an option to 'wake when the modem detects a ring'.what does this mean, and could this be used as a workaround to wake the other mac remotely? how do i call the macs modem anyway?

Sorry but that is not possible.

  • SMB2 Mac to Mac over LAN

    Hi,
I have three MacBooks of various ages and a Mac Mini runnign Mavericks server, all running Mavericks 10.9.2. All have access to the LAN via my service providers WiFi N router.
I've had an issue with SMB2 for a while, but with Mavericks pushing it as default its beginning to bug me that is not working as it should.
I can see all machines in the sidebar, I can connect via cmd-k using AFP without any problems. But if I try browsing to the various machiens and shares, its defaulting to SMB2 and seems to be having problems authenticating.
I get around 45sec delay, from pointing to a machine to getting an authentication screen where I can log in. I also get this same delay when manually using SMB2 using cmd-k.
There doesn't seem to be an issue with the machines, I've set up an ad-hoc network, and everything works perfectly, as soon as I'm connecting back thorugh the LAN via my router, thats where problems start. Don't really want to get another switch or Airport Hub etc at this stage.
Anyone else seen similar issues? Or have an idea what may be causing the problem on the router. I'd tried disabling IPV6, but makes not difference.
As mentioned above, there seems to be something interferring with the authenication process and delaying the whole process.

    Thanks Hevisko,
I've been following the CIFS work round, as I understand it, this is really a work round to connect to older SMB1/SMBX shares now that SMB2 has been rolled out as default. Particularly useful for older NAS boxes that only have SMB1.
My shares are all on OS Mavericks machines, therefore the shares are SMB2.
Also, there seems to be no problem when I take the router out of the equation. Think I might need to invest in a descent switch and bypass the router. Just wondering if anyone else has resolved this or can suggest a good switch that works with SMB2 mac to mac.
Failing that my Mac mini is always on, so might look at using that to run DNS/DHCP and see how that goes.

  • Update iPhoto on another Mac over a network???

I've got an iMac in my office and a Mini in the lounge.
I have tried copying the "Master" photo's from within the iPhoto folder across the network but they do not show on the other Mac.
What is the easiest way for me to do this? It gets very tiresome having to import the pics on both machines, surely there is a way to just copy them over my wireless network?

To copy the photos simply export them from iPhoto on one machine and copy to the other and import them on the other
To merge them over you must use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - there is no moving or merging capability within iPhoto

  • Is it possible for a G4 to use optical drive of another mac over a network

Well, is it? For some reason the optical drive on my G4 won't read certain CD's that are read by other Macs I have, but I can't see those drives over my network?

You can connect to it with file sharing, but you won't be able to use it as an installation source. In other words, you won't be able to reboot the G4 and see that drive over the network to boot from it.
If your G4's optical drive is consistently problematic, you could replace it quite easily and cheaply (if it's a desktop), or you might look at external optical drives.

  • Sharing files with another mac over internet

    Hi there,
My friend has a mac with tiger. I have a mac with tiger. We have built in ftp servers, correct? How exactly do we connect with each other over the internet to share large files? I know the answer is simple or at least available. Thanks for your time.
    rwa

One of the most secure way to share files over the internet is to use an sftp server.
Goto your system preferences-->sharing-->turn on remote login.
Then on your router's or firewalls port forward tcp port 22 to your mac. Then you can log into each others mac using an SFTP client such as transmit or cyberduck.

  • Remotely control mac to another mac over internet / ML 10.8.2

Help please!! I am in Hong Kong and want to be able to remotely control my fathers mac that is in the UK. I want to be able to take FULL control of his mac from mine. Both using Mountain lion. Can this done? What are the EXACT steps required to make this happen for both macs please?

The easiest way is of both of you are using Messages. If so you can share the screen of your fathers Mac and you will have access to the computer as if you ere logged in to it.
If you look in Messages->Video make sure Screen Sharing Enabled is checked on both computers. Then once you have a chat session going with your father select Messages->Ask to Share <fathers message name> Screen… and you father will select Messages->Share My Screen with <your message name>
You can look in the Messages help file for complete description of this.

  • G4 freezes while connecting to another Mac over the network

This is a mirror-drive, Dual 1GHz PowerPC G4, 1.25 GB RAM. It was recently repurposed as a hand-me-down when we upgraded. We cleaned it up and reinstalled everything. It connects to the internet just fine. Other computers can find it on the network and connect to it just fine. When I try to connect from this G4 to any other Mac on the network, I can find the other computers and I get the login popup, but when I put in the password and click OK, I get the color-wheel that never goes away. I have to power it off and try again.
This computer has been a work-horse for several years and has been on our network with no problems. This has just popped up since we moved it to a different desk.
One side note, we did upgrade our network recently, but none of the other Macs (including 2 other G4's) are having this problem.
    thoughts? suggestions?
    thanks.

What version of the Mac OS is the MDD running?
This has just popped up since we moved it to a different desk.
If that involved unplugging the computer from the wall, then a dead or weak PRAM battery may have let the computer lose something that it needs for the task. How old is the battery and how much time has the G4 spent off wall power in the last few years? If your firm requires unplugging computers at night (some do now in an effort to be more "green"), then the battery is surely dead by now.

  • Take control of Apple Mac over broadband ?

Is it possible to 'take control' of another mac over broadband ?
This would be useful so I could remotely do stuff for my folks ?
Is it possible to do this out of the box with a mac or do I need 3rd party software ?

    Hi, Mark.
You wrote: "1. Is it possible to 'take control' of another mac over broadband ?

    [Numbers added for reference]1. Yes.
    2. Yes.
    3. You want to use a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) solution, such as those listed in this VersionTracker search.
Technically, all Macs ship with the client for Apple Remote Desktop (ARD), but you'd have to install the server version of ARD ($$$) on your Mac to control the remote Mac.
As Kappy suggested, when looking for new applications, I recommend searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
    Good luck!

  • Do all the useful notes in your Mac's address book sync over to the Iphone?

Hi, I'm thinking of taking the plunge to buy Iphone mainly for the usefulness of address book synching but do all the notes entered on my Mac transfer over to the Iphone and vice-versa?
This is a crucial aspect for me. I know for instance that if you email a contact or group of contacts to another Mac user any notes present on the original contact are dumped (i.e not included) during the transfer - a horrendous oversight on Apple's part in my opinion and I'm worried that this might apply to Iphone connectivity too...
    Thanks
    Simon

My adress book notes came across from my Mac, though they're not extensive. Just read somewhere that smart groups don't transfer over, although ordinary groups do (mine did).

  • When i send a file over iChat to another mac it compresses the file, where is this compressed file stored?

Today i was transfering a few folders with pictures and videos over to another mac and I noticed that before i sent the file iChat would compress it.  Now this is understandable because they were fairly large files, over 2GB, and this would make them transfer faster.  The problem is that I was transfering the files because my mac is low on hard drive space and I was trying to free some up.  By compressing the files first it was using up more space on my hard drive and I quickly cancelled the compression.  I soon realized though that my hard drive space was still disappearing into thin air. I only had 6GB left and was running out fast.  As it reached 2GB I began to quickly delete large files I no longer needed hoping that I wouldn't run out of space. It dropped all the way down to 12.4MB before it finally stopped, even with me deleting files.  I'm not quite sure what was happening to all of my hard drive space, but was wondering if maybe iChat continued to compress the files even after I cancelled the compression.  Anyways if anyone knows why this happened or where iChat stores the files it compresses that would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have heard of this before.
One report suggested it was only PDF files their case.
I cannot replicate it with any pic files (Over 2Gb) PDF or otherwise or files and folders combos.
My tests were from Lion/iChat 6.0.3 to Snow Leopard (iChat 5.0.3)
I would have thought iChat would have created the Zippped/Stuffed files in the same folder as the original items
(i.e pic in the pictures folder (or relevant subfolder) and other files and documents in the Documents folder.
With any application that does Stuffing/Zipping it will create temporary space for doing so.
Much like the way a graphics app creates a Scratch file to keep the 20 or so Undos it works with.  (with graphic Apps you can make the Scratch file on another Drive if you have one which can help)
    Do this:-
with iChat Open go to the Window Menu.
    Select the File transfers item
In this Window (that pops up) select the File that was going to be Transferred.
When it is highlighted then do a Right-Click or Control Click and select the option to Show in Finder
Does it list the zipped file ?

need to setup another icloud e-mail address on Mac...how is this done?..Thanks...

You can set up up to three 'email aliases' which are additional addresses which deliver into the same inbox as the main address. You do this on the iCloud website, not in Mail. Please see this page:

  • Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Music Lab's "Midi Over LAN" broken?

    Hi all,
I run "music lab's midi over lan" and am wondering if it doesn't work under the new OSX 10.4.9......
I was forced to update 1 of my slave G5s and now "MolCP" no longer worx...... I can't be certain that it is 10.4.9, but I'm trouble-shooting,
    thanx in advance.
    SvK

Er, that's not forced, that's just not knowing any better!
You should have just gone to Apple and downloaded the 10.4.8 combo installer.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
    http://search.info.apple.com/?q=macos+x10.4.8&type=kbdload&search=Search&lr=lang_en&search=Go
OSX updates are always recommended to be done from the full combo update, rather than the smaller cut-down software updates anyway.

  • Why Should I Buy Another Mac Book Pro

I purchased a Mac Titanium Powerbook back in the day when it was so fresh and new, big bucks.  Within 2 years the logic board began freezing all the time.  It was fixed with big bucks again.  2 years later the laptop began doing the same thing, freezing up and so I went along with the extremely annoying issue.
When the Mac Book Pro came out I decided to start fresh with a new computer, with big bucks of course.  Guess what happened 2 years later as i lived in another town, took it to another Mac repair place.  They told me the Logic board was dead.  So after big bucks I replaced it, so rediculous.  And now, 2 years later it is freezing again, not only that, I can't connect to my wifi anywhere I want to in my own place with my own internet.  I have to walk to certain spots in my place so my Mac Book Pro will communicate with my router that always worked with the new Mac Book Pro since day 1.  But, after these updates Apple puts out to better the system, at some time it borked my internet connection.  Reading these boards and seeing similar problems with other Apple users and seeing there is no solution is decerning.  Then seeing a new security update from Apple about detecting virus popups and nothing addressing it's wifi issue is the last straw for me.
My wife bought a Toshiba 4 years ago and we put win7 on it when it came out since vista is disgusting.  There isn't one problem with her laptop, nothing.  And you can run still get on the internet with a laptop that runs win98.  I cant even load a page when I get on my Mac Titanium Powerbook, that has to be connected to the internet via ethernet cable becuase detecting wifi on that is something that never occured, even though it should.
I am on the fence, Mac vs PC?  Pricey vs Something that breaks less?
So why should I buy another Mac computer?

I don't think the experiences of a place where people discuss problems is necesarily an indicator of the overall populace using the product. Just as if you went to a hospital, you could not ascertain the relative overall health of everyone who is not in the hospital.
Statistically, you are probably an ideal candidate for a MBP, as it is extremely unlikely that you would have another problem of similar character. That is of course assuming that nothing you are doing is cutting short the life expectancy of your computers.
I am on my 4th MB variant, and have only had one major issue, which was handled terrifically by Apple. However, I am not entirely without worry that an electromechanical device nmade by humans can't fail. That is why I also have had AppleCare on everything.
But we differ in one great respect, I think. I figure that any computer i buy has a maximum life expectancy of 3 years. I have never used a computer longer than that, and I am routinely trading up within that time period. This time will be different though. I've only had my MBA for a little over 6 months, and It can't come any sooner that I'll move to the new one in about a month, if it nears my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the value you place on longevity. But I really think that unless your activities are especially harsh in a physical manner on your computers, then it is unlikely you will have the same experience once more. I do beleive that the current units are as good or better than anything Apple has had in their notbooks, in terms of quality.
But it is your decision,, that should be based on ALL facts and not just the experiences of those who visit a help forum.
