Adjust video playback brightness on-the-fly...?

I've just moved over from a 5G iPod to an iPhone, and had a question about a certain aspect of video playback...
I watch a lot of video on my iPod (now iPhone), and I'm a stickler for saving my battery life, so I always turn the screen brightness right down to its lowest viewable point when watching video.
I also watch video in bed, with the lights off, so turning the brightness right down still makes the videos perfectly viewable.
Sometime though, of course, I have to turn the brightness up for scenarios where I'm in a brighter environment.
The way to do this on the 5G iPod is, at any time when watching a video, hit the centre button twice (once takes you to the scrubber) and then scroll left or right for dimmer or brighter. Easy. Job done. And you can see the results right there and then, so you can adjust it to just right.
Now unless I'm mistaken, there's no similar way of doing this on the iPhone, and that you can NOT adjust video brightness on the fly...
The only way to adjust brightness is, while watching a video, to go to Home > Settings > Brightness > Drag it > Home > iPod > Video.
Surely everyone can see that's a MUCH more laborious way of doing things!?
Even then, you can't be sure you got the brightness setting adjusted correctly, because a bright vivid animation, like The Simpsons, is much more visible and clear on a low brightness setting than, say, TV shows of Magnum P.I. with their 80's "converted-from-video" feel.
And believe me, I know, because those 2 examples are real-world scenarios for me.
And before anyone says it, yes I DO know about the "Auto-Brightness" setting, but I've tried it, and 9 times out of 10 it's too dim for my liking in a brightly-lit room (especially on the Magnum P.I.'s) and it's too bright in bed with the lights off (especially on the Simpsons)!
So I suppose if I'm making this post a question, it would be:
Is there no method of changing video playback brightness on-the-fly, while the video is still playing on-screen?

Brett,
You've been around on these forums long enough to understand what is and isn't allowed by the TOA, so I'm fairly sure you know (I don't know but could make a guess as well).
In general this whole thread could be deleted... except that you asked a question at the very end of your first post (which was answered). That's all these forums are for, asking and getting questions answered. Editorial comments, rants and raves are not what we are here for.

  • Premiere CS5 will not render video with titles on the fly in preview window

I am trying to use CS5 and notice if I add a title to the timeline overlapping any video and then attempt to play the video as soon as it hits the part with the title the video stops playing in the preview window. The background sound keeps going but video play back stops. In premiere CS4 it would render titles on the fly no problem. Why wont it do it in CS5? I should not have to render the timeline it should do at least a rough realtime playback without a full render. In CS4 it would play any and all effects on the fly depending on the resolution and the performence would vary depending on how many and what effects and transitions were applied to the clips but its very useful to get a quick idea how it will look. If I scrub, the titles playback while scrubbing no problem its only with actual playback it happens. Other effects and transitions I apply seem to render on the fly and play back in the preview window ok, it only seems to be the titles having the issues.
    Any ideas?

I want to use the built in premiere title function to place titles along with fades and what not and then play back clips in the preview windows with the titles applied rendering on the fly. This works perfectly in CS4, just not in CS5. When I try it in CS5 after you hit the play button it will play the clip but as soon as you get to the part of the clip where the title is the video playback will freeze, mind you the clip is still playing in the sense that audio is still going just the video playback stops in the preview window. As a note if you scrub the video on the timeline the video clips will display with the titles applied it should, it is only when you hit the play button the problem happens.
I have tried adjusing the quality settings in the preview window, updated my gfx card drivers and system drivers along with directx. Premiere is updated. I have tested other effects and transitions and they display fine, including super imposures such as chroma key or ultra key. I have adjust playback settings not that there was much to adjust there.
I will say again in CS4 never had this issue, I am surprised to see it here.
Please any ideas would be appriciated thx.

  • Video playback brightness flickers iPad3

Watching videos on my iPad 3rd gen the brightness of the screen keeps changing. As in if something bright suddenly comes on the screen the screen darkens a bit to compensate for the overexposure. On most videos where scenes have a constant lighting source you don't notice it, but if the camera tends to move around or things are popping up in the video it's very noticable.
For instance watching the video podcast for Mad Money on my iPad when ever a chart comes on the screen darkens. As the camera zooms in or out on Jim Cramer the brightness of the screen changes. The brightness changes so quickly it's quite disconcerting. But watching the average TV show it's not that noticeable unless you are looking for it. My iPad One with 5.1 doesn't do this, nor do the same videos on my iMac. Just on my iPad 3.
    Anyone else notice this?

    For what it's worth.
I lived with the brightness (backlight) fluctuating problem on my 3rd gen iPad since March 2012. I was on my third replacement at the end and they all had the problem. As previously stated it would happen in the middle of a shot and in the end I got very good at predicting when it was going to happen based on the composition of the shot. It was also repeatable in that you could play the same shot over and over and it would always happen at the same point.
What was really annoying was that the problem was only happening in the natve VIDEO player. The problem was not there when using the VLC player. I was therefore hoping that iOS upgrades would have reduced or eliminated the playback problem. Unfortunately they didn't.
I have now upgraded to an iPad Air and the brightness problem has gone - well, not really, it has changed.
If I play files that show the problem on my old iPad the problem shots still have problems on the iPad Air but now instead of the brightness changing in the middle of the shot they now change on the first frame of the shot or at worst the 2nd frame. It's as if the player is looking ahead in the shot and deciding that the shot needs it's brightness (backlight) adjusted and cleverly does so. The unfortunate thing is that sometimes it happens right on the shot change and sometimes a frame or so later. It is not repeatable any more and when the adjustment is late it is noticeable but not as much as my previous iPad adjusting in the middle of a shot.
Again, the VLC player does not have this problem on my iPad Air.
I have seen this behaviour on 3 iPad Airs.

  • How to adjust a function generator on-the-fly in Labview 7.0

I'm using the 'Simulate Signal' vi in LabView 7.0 (with BNC-2090 board) to generate a triangle wave for output to a potentiostat. If the value of either the high or low potential is changed, however, the signal incorporates discontinuities as it recalculates the amplitude and offset. Does anyone know of a way to recalculate the phase shift on-the-fly so that those discontinuities and sudden jumps in signal no longer appear? I think there should be a way to do it using an array, but the 'simulate signal' vi seems like it would be much easier to use.

I agree with Evan that this is not an easy task.
A PID loop could help with the discontinuity but hurt other things. Here are my thoughts.
PID at output of "Simulate Signal"
This would smooth the transition but would also round-off the max and mins. Probably not good.
PID to control Amplitude and offset
Once you have this tuned, it may do what you want if you can tolerate the delay.
    Filtering
Here you have to tolerate some phase shift as in the above. You are also caught in a catch 22 because you do not want the dicntinuity when the settings change but meanwhile the triagle wave is an endless series of cusps.
Let us know what ends up working for you.

  • 9 hours of video playback using this

    anyone use this?
    http://www.tekkeon.com/site/products-mypower.php

The orignal 30GB Video iPod had a video playback of 2hrs with the brigthness at max. The orignal 30GB Video iPod can get an additional 3hrs of video playback a total of 5hrs when the brightness is completely dimmed. To completely dim the backlight during video isn't great because its pretty dark. So I suggest you dim to 1/4 brightness and you will most likely get between 3.5 to 4hrs of video playback. Right now I'm testing how much battery life I would get with the backlight dim to 1/4 brightness and so the results coming out great I played a 2hr 40min movie with 1/4 battery life left. I'm hoping I get an additional hour.
The new 30GB iPod has a 3.5hrs of video playback with the brightness at max. So the new 30GB Video iPod gets an ugrade of 1.5hrs of video playback, that can probably go up to 6.5hrs of video playback with the brightness completely dimmed.
I did this test to ease the pain of those who just bought the orignal 30GB iPod and then find out days later that Apple to released an upgrade 30GB Video iPod. So if you want extra video playback just dim the brightness on the backlight halfway and you will get around 3.5hrs of video playback instead 2hrs.

  • Iphone 5 video playback problems over quicktime?

ive recently got a new laptop, pre windows 8, and downloaded quicktime pro in order to play my iphone videos right side up because windows media player will play them upside down alot of the time. something i immeadiately noticed was that all my videos from my iphone 5, when played back via quicktime, have a big judder/skip in them every 2 seconds whereis all my iphone 4 videos playback no problem. the few videos i have that are recorded right side up from my iphone 5, because of orientation of the phone during recording, play perfectly fine on windows media player so this this leads me to believe it is a quicktime issue. i have updated to the latest quicktime just a few days ago with hopes of it being corrected but no such luck. im curious if anyone else is having this same problem or knows a fix? also if anyone knows how to flip videos with quicktime so i can just watch them on windows media would be great also. i found a write up how to do it but everytime i try it, after i save it it just reverts back to its orgional orientation. thanks for any help, Jamie

Add me to the list of people having this problem.
I'm running Macbook on 10.5.8. Quicktime is 7.6.9, in case this has any bearing on things.
OK......I just searched a few places and came up with this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perian
It's called Perian, and it's one of a few different options you could use to solve this problem....I just installed it (free), and now the videos play without a hitch. It's a plug-in for Quicktime.  There are others that can supposedly do the same thing--look around and give it a shot.
(Also, supposedly this Perian is no longer in open development, and may not work with the newest Quicktime update for the newest Macs, but, like I said, there are other options out there that may work for you instead.)
I have a feeling my problem may have been due to my particular Quicktime/Macbook setup being a bit outdated, but who knows?
    Good luck!

  • ITunes video playback quality is not that smooth

    Hello:
    Two questions--
    1. Why do the music videos I purchase on iTunes (and then play on iTunes) freeze up for a few seconds after I push play, but then otherwise playback is OK?
    2. Why does the "spinning beachball" appear almost everytime I press play for a video?
    Comment--
Given that my Mac more than meets the minimum system requirements for video playback, I think the videos should play smoothly from start to finish, especially at $1.99 a piece. I suspect that the playback bugs listed above are the result of iTunes not being that good/powerful of a video player. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved upon future iTunes software updates. In the meantime, I will not purchase anymore videos.
    Thanks.

    Powerbook G4 12" 1.33 Ghz 512 K RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • Video playback fullscreen

While watching a video in full screen mode I press the pasue button and the whole movie window fades out and disappears. The normal functionality would be for the movie to pause. The movie then stops. No window or anything. The only way to start the movie back up is to go into itunes and restart the movie.

Don't know what's going on there...works here with two Cinema Displays.
I've got Apple FireWire NTSC (mirror on desktop-checked) in my A/V devices tab of Audio/Video Settings...(nothing selected in 'Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video, because I'm not using that function in this workflow)
I can then just go to View/Video Playback/Fullscreen from the main menu and it goes right out to my second display.
Maybe has something to do with your Mac System Monitor preferences.?.?...not sure.

  • Cropping And Streaming On The Fly

    Hello!
I'd like to do something but I'm not entirely sure if it's possible. What I would like to do is have a large (probably 720p / 1080p) video, and then on the fly, be able to stream a cropped version of it. Essentially to allow a user to 'zoom' in on a low res video, and then be streamed just the relevant area of a high res video.
I know that i could probably do this in the client side by just zooming or changing the size of the video view object but this creates the problem of bandwidth and streaming HD...
I know that in theory it should be possible without re encoding the video because you could just choose the macro blocks that fit within the cropped area and send those. Probably.
I was wondering if anyone with a little more experience that me would be able to point me in the right direction with this? Is there built in functions for this in flash or would I need to build some kind of extreme low level on the fly encoding system?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

  • HD Video Playback

Is HD video playback accelerated by the graphics card or CPU? I've always thought graphics card mainly helped with 3D stuff, so video playback is more controlled by the CPU. Just wanted to know for sure.
For example. If I had the choice between a Mac Mini or a Power Mac G5, which one would be able to play the video better? The Mac Mini has built-in graphics but a fast CPU. The G5 has slower CPU but can upgrade to a really good video card (along with adding faster drives as well).
    Thanks!
    -will

Yeah, I'm getting tired of having to keep plugging in my MBP all the time. Would rather just have a desktop. I'm only doing video stuff for fun, nothing serious. I'll leave it to the real editors running FCP to do all the fancy stuff.
I was considering the G5 because my coworker is selling his dual G5 2Ghz for $650 (and I'm finding them around the same price online as well). I understand that Snow Leopard won't run on it, but I'm fine w/o it (or so I think, haha).
    Thanks for your help!

  • Leopard Upgrade - Front Row 2.0 Video Playback Choppy

    Hi Everyone,
I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and all is well except for video playback via Front Row. I'm playing video_ts files - which play back fine if I use the Apple DVD player application. In the new version of Front Row they tend to 'studder' and are choppy from time to time. I have 1GB of RAM installed, and I'm wondering if that is enough??
Another note about video playback... I was watching the Dallas vs. Greenbay game last night via a live stream on the Internet using my Mini on a hard wired connection. Unfortunately, it was choppy for both audio and video. My G4 Powerbook did a perfect job. It also has 1GB of RAM, it's running Leopard - and I was watching the game over a wireless connection. Audio and video were almost perfect.
Do you think that Leopard requires more memory than Tiger on my dual core Mini? I'm wondering if I should upgrade to 2GB's of RAM - or maybe re-install Leopard from scratch. (I did an upgrade install the first time.)
(Also - My Mini is connected to a 37" 1080p Sharp LCD display via DVI.)
Thanks for the help and advice!

    Thanks for the response Boece...
My startup drive has 15GB of free space. The files are playing from an external Lacie HD (via USB 2.0) that has 20GB of free space.
It's odd that all files will play perfectly when using the DVD app to view the movies. Front Row 2.0 will have intermittent problems when viewing the same file.
Nothing else is running on the Mini when I am using Front Row.
The only other time that I have seen choppy video playback is with the screen saver. I really like the new 'Mosiac' option for pictures - but with this display the Mini can't zoom from one picture to the next at all without being all choppy. It's almost like the graphics card is having trouble. The other options for 'Collage' and 'Slideshow' work fine - with smooth flowing playback.
I'm planning on hooking the Mini up to a 19" monitor today to see if the problems go away.
I'll report back with the results.

  • Video Playback Fullscreen (missing)

I recently took my iMac in to have the logic board replaced, which was quick and painless, by the way, but when I got back to work on it, the Command-F12 -Fullscreen preview wouldn't work. Under the Preferences menu, the video preview option comes up (missing). Any Ideas? thanks!

  • Modifying Motion ON-THE-FLY

    Hello
How can I modify the motion (acceleration, velocity) on the fly using PCI 7344.
    Some thing like this:
    http://www.motioneng.com/trajectory_mod.html
    Thank you

    Hi,
there are several ways to accomplish this:
Load new values for acceleration and velocity while your motor is moving. To commit these values call the flex_start() command again. The axis will accelerate/decelerate to the new velocity immediately. The move doesn't get interrupted by these commands.
If you don't need to vary the acceleration you could also use the flex_load_velocity_override() function. This function allows you to scale the velocity that you have loaded previously between 0 and 100 %. When you call this function, the velocity of an ongoing move changes with the previously loaded accel/decel values.
Method one is a bit more flexible as it allows you to adjust all move constraints on the fly, while the second method executes much faster (lower execution delay).
I have provided the C function names. If you are using LabVIEW you will find VIs with very similar names.
    I hope this helps,

  • Poor video playback with Windows XP

    Hi all,
I am trying to play TV shows that bought from the ITMS (Xena & Star Trek remixed originals). I seem to be getting poor video playback performance. The video is briefly freezing and skipping. The frame rate is also not very good.
    System specs:
    2.6GHz P4 with hyperthreading enabled
    2GB RAM
Matrox Parhelia 128 video card (latest drivers and firmware)
    Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum
WinXP Pro SP2 + latest hotfixes
    iTunes 7.2
I bought my first TV show after upgrading to iTunes 7.2 so I can't compare performance with v7.1 or earlier. I've tried playing the videos from a local IDE (D:, 60GB free out of 120GB) and from my 1TB Buffalo Terastation (RAID 5, 750GB). The performance is the same. The CPU activity varies from 75% to 95% CPU usage while playing the videos.
Even though my Matrox Parhelia is 3 years old it is still one of Matrox's top performance video cards and does excelent 2D and pretty good 3D.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steven

You're leaping to a conclusion that isn't supported by any facts. Just because you are having a problem is not an indictment of Safari 4. I'm having no trouble, nor are millions of other users, so that destroys your thesis. The problem is something that was a pre-existing condition on your Mac.
Did either of you Repair Disk Permission before and after installing it? If not, start with that. Do you have the most recent version of Flash installed? If not, download the Flash uninstaller from the Adobe web site, then the lastest Flash installer and run those, then restart Safari and test it on some video.
