Adjusting brightness of display

I finally installed my KVM switch so I could use my old Windows box again (as little as possible), and I noticed that my Windows display is much brighter and more vibrant than my mini's display. Unfortunately I can't seem to figure out how to adjust the brightness on my mini.
"Help" says to go to System Preferences, Displays, then click "Display" and then "Drag the Brightness slider to adjust the brightness of your display." Sounds easy, but I see no Brightness slider on my Display options screen. What am I missing?
Thanks.
If nothing else I guess I could always adjust the brightness using my monitor controls then go into Windows and reduce the brightness a bit, but I shouldn't have to do that.

I also have a KVM switch that I use to switch between my PC and Mac, and I noticed the same thing. If you go into Display/Color Tab/and pick Calibrate, you can adjust the gamma and brightness controls for the profile. I basically tried to get the two as close as possible, but still found the whites on the the PC to be a tiny bit brighter still after calibration. This is rumored to be due to a weak signal on the Mini's end.

  • Cannot adjust brightness after display driver update on Satellite L855-118

    Hi.
I just bought an SATELLITE L855-118 , with ATI graphics today, it was between this and another one, but i know you have problems updating graphic drivers on a Sony-notebooks.
    I made a restore point.
So i uninstalled the ATI catalyst and then did an driver sweeper, and re-booted and then installed catalyst 12.6 , installed fine, but my screen went to maximum brightness and i cannot adjust it, the brighness osd appears but the screen brightness does not change.
So i used my restore point.
This time i overwrote the stock catalyst 8.9 with 12.6, just the same cannot adjust the brightness.
Does anybody know how to fix this.
My full spec in the link below.
    Satellite L855-118 - Product Specifications - Toshiba
    Thanks
    John.

This is not going to help you, but I have details on the internals of brightness control on this machine.
On other notebooks I've worked with, the hotkeys generated an event that was directly handled by the firmware (ACPI) that changed the brightness; this was done to avoid putting into the AMD video driver any system-dependent code.
On the L855 the ACPI does not really handle the notification, it just generates another event that is supposed to be handled by the video driver. For more technical details see:
Now this is where it gets ugly: if brightness control is indeed system-dependent (e.g. you have to poke some random GPIO) then the AMD driver will never support it (it would have to know the details of each and every model in circulation).
The good news - at least for Linux users - is that AMD just published the specification of its ACPI interface:
I've already done some experiments with it, keep an eye on the thread.
This may (or may not...) lead to a usable brightness control *for Linux*, but the same information *may* be used to create a similar driver for Windows.

  • Display Auto adjust brightness acting weird and flickering

Last couple of months I get a fair amount of flickering on my screen. As far as I can tell, there
is no specific area that it is flickering in. After checking my settings for Auto brightness,, I find that
the box that is there for ticking off "Automatically adjust brightness" is unticked, and the brightness is
moved to around the 3/4 brightness area.  I am in my basement which is fairly dark, so basically I am
trying to find out about the flickering that goes on, and have a feeling that when the brightness is diminished, it
causes/caused the flickering. So, I raised the brightness to extreme(right to the end of the scale) and continue
to have the box "Automatically adjust brightness" UNCHECKED.    Sooner or later,, something must trip off the
Autobrightness,, because I eventually notice the flickering going on,, then I go to my settings to check the brightness,
and find that the slider is back to 3/4 and still the Autobrightness box is Unchecked. This happens all by itself.
Basically , #1,, whether it is on Auto or Not,, I shouldn't get any flickering, and #2,, my display shouldn't on its own
adjusting automatically the brightness by itself, unless I check the box correct?  How can I get my screen brightness
    to stick ?

To close out my original post, I never did managed to solve my flickering problem. I did every trick in the book, including SMC  resetting PRAM etc. So, just as I had given up trying to fix, low and behold, my left side of the
screen one fine morning became rather dim. I knew that something , like backlight had gone on it. So, I still had
lots of warranty, brought it in. This time, because of it being a rather obvious defect upon looking at my screen.
The genius ordered a new LCD and backlight .
So far, no flickering, however, I still have the brightness level that drops down from a full brightness, no matter if I check off "automatically adjust brightness" or not. This being in a relatively dark environment.
I can imagine that there are many people still with this problem, with no obvious solutions that are 100 % effective.

  • 27" ACD as second monitor -- cannot adjust brightness

I've connected a 27" LED ACD to my 27" iMac as a second monitor, but the keyboard commands for adjusting brightness do not affect the cinema display. I understand a common cause for this is that the USB isn't connected, but mine is and I can verify it is working because I have an external HD connected to the USB port of the ACD, and the iMac recognizes that it is connected.
Also, if I go into Display Preferences then I do see the Brightness slider for the second monitor. This is currently the only way I can adjust the brightness of that monitor.

True, Unless there's a shortcut for that, the only way to adjust the brightness of the second monitor is by using the display preferences . same here with a MBP / 27" display.

  • IMac 24" and adjusting brightness.

Hello. I have this fancy (and great) iMac 24". Only annoying thing is that when I try to adjust brightness, it just does not "adjust" brightness. Difference between "none" and "full" brightness is close to nothing. I have so far zap Prams, deleted prefs, turn green and shouted that I am Hulk - any ideas?
I know that there is Shade and other small apps to do this. But Brightness-control should efeect as...well... a brightness control.
Sooooo...any ideas how to get a working brightness control by keyboard?

Yeah, I have. And system preference panel.
When I press F1 or F2 to adjust brightness I have this normal response in display (picture). I dont know whats the right word for it but I mean the white brightness slash hovering on my iMacs desktop. You know, when You press volume controls there is a picture of speaker and when you press brightness there is a picture of rising sun.
Anyways, I get that. BUT THERE IS NO VISIBLE CHANGE IN BRIGHTNESS BETWEEN HIGHEST AND LOWEST.
Same thing via System preferences. Brightness slider has the same lack of adjustment.
Sooo, any ideas? Where could be the problem?

  • Adjusting brightness and colour temperature on WindowXP PC

    Hi,
I'm using Windows XP PC. I just bought 27" Cinema Display but I find that i can't adjust brightness and colour temperature in Windows XP......
I'm new user for apple and feel confuse about how to use this cinema display well in Windows XP PC.
    Many thanks
    Ben

For brightness you need the AppleControlPanel.exe file from the Boot Camp package to be able to adjust the brightness - don't install the whole of Boot Camp as it will cause problems on a non-Apple PC, just get this one file - I can provide it if you can't find it elsewhere.

  • Auto Adjust Brightness late 2010 is gone

Auto adjust Brightness Button is gone?!?
Can you help me getting it back?
    See

The auto brightness button is near the top - the one that starts with "Optimal".
In English, that button says "Resolution - best for built-in display".
I see what you mean, though, as resolution and brightness are really different things.
Anyway, glad your problem is solved.

  • How do I turn off "Automatically adjust brightness" on Mountain Lion using AppleScript

I'm new to Mac, Applescript and Automator and I'm trying to make a automation for when I perform on stage and found a script to set the brightness all the way up but can't find a script to disable "Automatically adjust brightness". Any help would be appreicated.

You could even both “set the brightness all the way up” and “disable Automatically adjust brightness” with just one and the same script:
    tell application "System Preferences"
        -- launch
        -- activate
set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.displays"
reveal anchor "displaysDisplayTab" of current pane
        tell application "System Events"
            tell process "System Preferences"
tell group 1 of tab group 1 of window 1
set value of slider 1 to 1.0 -- max
                    tell checkbox 1
if value is 1 then click
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        quit -- optional
    end tell

  • Adjust brightness (too high)

    Hello there!
I am big fan of Nokia since 2008, all the family uses it's smartphones (n82 > n78 > n8) and I haven't any troubles with the screen till last update of nokia n8 (belle), the brightness just to high to me. For example, on android 7 inch tablet with IPS display I can adjust brightness to the lowest point (it's about 4-7 kd/m2) so it would be look like backlight off at all, great for me.
Now for the question: as I presume, on Nokia lumia 920 the lowest point of screen brightness is "low" (which is about 60 kd/m2), is there any options to make it lower? Like 14 kd/m2? Or it's just impossible for Nokia's amoled screens?

  • T440p screen slightly adjusting brightness on google chrome

Hi, my T440p slightly adjusts the screen brightness depending on what is being displayed. For example, on Chrome, one page might have more images, so the screen slightly adjusts brighter or darker. Another page it might slightly adjust again. And it does it when scrolling down a page as well. It is distracting, and I want to disable it? I'm on windows 7.
    Solved!

  • Automatically adjust brightness way too aggressive

I've noticed in low light situations, my new MacBook is almost constantly adjusting the screen and keyboard brightness. It's highly distracting. I've got around the problem by simply turning off "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" in Displays, but I'd like to know if anyone else has this problem.
If it's unique to mine, I should probably get it fixed...
    Message was edited by: sdfisher

It is just how things are. However, some sort of software fix could probably improve it! I own another monitor with a light-sensor, and these just seem to be sensitive, especially in low light.
Take in considerations that it monitors the light continuously. If you are in a dark room, you will be lit by the display. So if you move around, the amount of light on you (and thereby the amount of light sensed by the sensor) will change. Resulting in some weird behavior.
So as you figured out yourself, turning it off gets the best result. Luckily it is easy to change the backlight of the display and keyboard.
    - Have a nice day

  • Automatically adjust brightness - Missing

I have a user complaining of the brightness level changing continuously. I researched and identified Automatically adjust brightness needed to be disabled. When I went to disable it, I found it was missing. I researched that, but couldn't find anything about that. I did find that older iMac models wouldn't have that feature, but we purchased this hardware last year. Is that too old? Anyone have any ideas?
    - OS X version: 10.9.4 (13E28)
    - iMac 27-inch , Late 2013
    - NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1024 MB

Where did you look to disable the feature.  It's in the System/Displays/Display preference pane:
If the checkbox is not there Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot normally and try again  If that fails reboot into the Recovery volume again and reinstall the system.

  • Windows 8.1 Bootcamp wont Sleep or adjust Brightness

Hey Guys, I installed windows 8.1 via bootcamp onto my 2013 rMBP, 16gig Ram, Upgraded Processor, and I have two issues with it. 1. I cannot adjust my screen brightness, which is manageable but annoying. 2. It wont go to sleep. There isnt an option anywhere to adjust brightness or put it to sleep. The only option are to hibernate, shut down, or do nothing. It seems as though the sleep function just isnt available, nor is the brightness. I feel like thse two things may be connected, but I wasnt sure. I have browsed some threads, but nobody seems to have a find for 8.1 or these problems yet. When I try to sleep my computer (i.e. close the lid) it just shuts down, and I have to hold option to power up back into windows. If anyone has a solution, please do let me know:) Thanks!! Also I'm running mavericks fully updated, the newest bootcamp software and the newest bootcamp drivers, AND windows is fully updated.

I have the same issue. Any luck miller? When I close the lid on my Macbook, i have to power back up and use the OPTION key to get back to Windows 8.1. This issue just started after updating to Mavericks...
My brightness control does work fine.
