Adobe GoLive is Dead.  Now What?

Adobe announced today that GoLive is dead: http://www.macworld.com/article/133181/2008/04/golivedead.html
I am a long time Adobe GoLive user having migrated from Pagemaker 3.0 to GoLive 6 to GoLive 9. My websites are not that complicated, and I know Dreamweaver has a lot of bells and whistles but it is probably too much for what I do. (or is it?)
Can anyone recommend another program (freeware, shareware or commercial) for building and maintaining web sites that is easy to learn and use, or is Dreamweaver the way to go?????

I've been going through the tutorials for Dreamweaver for the last couple of weeks and have converted my sites from Golive. Dreamweaver is not too bad, but there are some differences. I'm using the Lynda.com movies to work out a few specific issues and terms.
Luckily, if you just get tired of how Dreamweaver treats your site, you can easily fix the code by hand.
One thing, I've been using CSS when necessary with Golive for years (when it benefited me). With Dreamweaver you will get it shoved down your throat with all the extra crap code it will include. GoLive 9 was getting that way also, so there's always some cleanup required. If you already work well with sites entirely in CSS then you won't notice.

  • My Powerbook is dead, now what?

I bought my Powerbook in June 2002. I have used this computer for so long but it started acting up and so for Christmas, "Santa" gave me an external drive and I backed everything up.
This week, my laptop died. In a really horrible, nasty way. I started up in single user mode and did "fsck" and got a "hard drive can not be repaired". Took it to the Apple store and they confirmed, definitely a dead hard drive and I would have to replace.
Now, before I do anything, I want to understand my options. I use this computer for iTunes (20GM iPod), storing Photos, email, web, Word, Excel, etc (basic stuff). I do want to use it to start working on digital scrapbooks with Adobe Photoshop Elements. This means a lot of .jpg files will be open at once and playing around with them. Probably while I go online to read how someone did something.
I upgraded to Tiger (I am not sure what version what the last I was up to because I have automatic updates). I upgraded the memory but I can't look at all my specs right now (obviously).
One thing I would like to have is wireless capability to use in places like coffee houses so I don't have to take the work junk computer I have to surf remotely.
Should I go ahead and replace the hard drive to put this computer back together as my primary computer (and if so, how big)? Should I add a wireless card too? Or should I get a desktop and then keep this laptop around and maybe replace things when I have a little more cash? OR, realize that I am going to eventually have to buy a better computer and get another laptop? If so, what to do with this one?
I am not a complete idiot when it comes to computers but I am certainly not up to speed right now on what's out there. I do need something in the next few weeks though because my iPod is the DJ for my wedding on April 1, 2006 and right now, that is not looking so good!
Powerbook Titanium DVI   Mac OS X (10.4)

Hi again, jenninbel. There is always a chance that more than one thing is wrong with a computer, but the gradual decline and failure of a hard drive would certainly explain, all by itself, what you've experienced.
A 7200-RPM drive will be noticeably faster reading and writing large amounts of data than a 5400-RPM drive. Opening and saving ordinary small files is so fast in either case that you'd probably never notice a difference, unless you work normally with applications that routinely read and write hundreds of megabytes, or even gigabytes, of data. You currently have to pay a sizable premium for 7200-RPM drives, particularly those of 100GB and more. If you do a lot of heavy image-processing, professional audio, or digital-video work, a faster drive may be worth paying for. But if your work involves a lot of that sort of thing, your Powerbook's internal drive will never be large enough to serve as your primary drive for long, and your Powerbook's processor won't be fast enough to serve your needs for long, either.
As to brands, you'll hear different things from different people. Look at the manufacturer's warranty, above all. The chief advantage of buying and installing a drive yourself instead of having Apple install one for you is that you'll get the original manufacturer's warranty of 3-5 years on it, rather than 90 days (which is all you'd get from Apple, even if Apple were installing exactly the same drive). Given a long warranty, it may matter a lot less what brand you buy than how good your backup strategy is and how religiously you use it. Any drive can fail, and used long enough, every drive will. You don't want to lose your data, whether your drive fails after seven days or seven years. The only brand I urge you to avoid is Western Digital, which just doesn't have a very good reputation for longevity, warranty or no warranty.

  • Replaced power supply, G5 still dead - now what?

I recently posted that my wife's G5 2.0 (June 2004) had made a loud pop followed by a burning odor, and the consensus on the forum seemed to be that the power source had died. I just replaced the power source, but when I tried to fire up the computer got no results; no light, no chime, nothing. The one thing that the computer IS doing now that it did not after the "popping" incident is that when I turn on the power strip that the computer plugs into, the computer makes a small clicking sound, like a switch being flipped, that it also made before (but not after) the popping incident.
Before taking everything apart and looking to see where I might have screwed up I'd appreciate any advice as to where I should look first. I thought the disassembly and reassembly went pretty smoothly, so I'm a bit bummed at the lack of a positive result (except for the clicking noise being back).
Probably not relevant, but I was interested to see that the power source I pulled from the computer was made by Lite On, so perhaps it had been replaced before I bought it 4 years ago.

So here's where I am now. I disassembled the computer to the point of pulling the heat sinks so I could see the connections to the power supply, except for the plug that sits under the supply and would require pulling the PS out to check. All connections look good. I also looked at the connections from the "start button" back to the boards, and they looked/felt solid.
I did find the SMU reset button that BDAqua mentioned, and that I hadn't found before. I put the good battery out of my own computer in, pushed the SMU reset button, then plugged in and tried to start. No success; no light or any sound when pushing the startup button.
Any ideas what to try next? Could something else have fried when the power supply went? Or could the original popping noise and burning smell been caused by something else entirely? Do I need to pull the power source to make sure the final connection is good? I sure THOUGHT I plugged it together well.
On the positive side, I've gotten really fast at taking the computer apart....

  • WVC54GCA appears dead - now what?

I have a WVC54GCA that has been providing me with good service for almost a year and a half. All of a sudden it stopped responding.  I took it off the network, did a power-off reset, did a reset via the reset button, let it sit unconnected and without power for 24 hours, and... nothing.  Not even the flashing blue light when I connect it to power. I checked the AC adaptor with a voltmeter and it is OK.
It's out of warranty so there is no hope there.
Any suggestions to revive this, or is it destined for the recycle bin?
    Paul

I register just to thx the OP that I did what you did, replace the power supply and it works, I been using this cam since 2008, all is well, just 1 day it went down, who know it was the power.

  • What product opens Adobe GoLive files in Mac OSX 10.8.3?

What product will open my old Adobe GoLive Web files now that I have installed Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3?
I installed the new Mac operating system, not knowing that it would make my Adobe GoLive CS2 inoperable.
I know it's Adobe GoLive is old, but I maintain my churches website using the old system, and now have no way to update the site.

download a trial of dreamweaver (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=dreamweaver) and see if you can open those converted (http://www.adobe.com/devnet-archive/dreamweaver/golive_migration/content/using_gmk_extensi on.html) golive files.

  • I am changing laptops and have tried to download and install Acobat 9 Standard from the Adobe website, but get message that my serial number is invalid. I log in and double check my account and it shows as a valid serial number.  Now what?

I am changing laptops and have tried to download and install Acrobat 9 Standard from the Adobe website, but get message that my serial number is invalid. I log in and double check my account and it shows as a valid serial number.  Now what?

If you had it on a laptop that crashed and you threw away, it is still considered as activated on that machine.  YOu should contact Adobe by chat or by phone and have them deactivate for you.
Here is a link to a page with options to help make contact:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/download-install/supportinfo/
If you are getting a message that indicates the serial number is not valid, you should look thru the following:

  • My new ipod classic does not work anymore! The music stopped and the display is dead. What now, besides calling support?

My new ipod classic does not work anymore! The music stopped and the display is dead. What now, besides calling support? Useless to say my PC didn't recognize the Ipod anymore either.

Anton, I wish I could help. I had an old iPod Classic (60 KB) as a gift but it went dead, I dropped it a few times accidentally, and it sat carefully saved until I had sufficient resources, energy and time to get the matter addressed. In my case, I actually took the thing (after making sure it was charged) to an Apple store and one of the geniuses at the genius bar at the back of the store took it and did a few things (unseen and un-noted) with his fingers and handed it to me with a sly smile. Voila, the thing was functional. I got a re-functionalized iTunes account and store access when I bought my iMac. I did lose a few tunes along the way because it didn't recognize my new iMac as the source (my old dead PC laptop), but I have a more functional memory than the iPod and recovered them all in other ways. The whole thing is humming better than ever. At over 11 gb full, I have 4.2 days worth of portable listening. Be patient; it took me four years to get musical nirvana in a pocket, but you'll get there faster. Call support.

  • The latest automatic update was accompanied by "You should update Adobe Flash Player right now". Having done this a few days ago a new Firefox update arrived with the same "request". Why and what do I need to do to stop this?

The latest automatic update (in March) was accompanied by "You should update Adobe Flash Player right now". Having done this a few days ago a new Firefox update arrived (today 7. March) with the same "request". Why does this happen and what can I do to stop it? Firefox 3.6.15 and Adobe flash player 10.1.82.76 are currently installed.

Shockwave Flash 10.1 r82 is not the latest version of Flash. '''r152''' is the latest.

How do I install recommended updates, when I click on adobe flash plugin update now buttons, I hit a dead end on oracle's website, how do I complete the update?

First, grab the Adobe uninstaller from here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html
Then download Flash 10.3.183.90 from here - about halfway down the page:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
    (Released 6/11/2013) Flash Player 10.3.183.90 (61.1 MB)
IMO, the best version of Flash for WinXP. Adobe kept up with security updates for 10.3 for WinXP users long after Flash 11.0 came out in 2011 for Vista and newer versions of Windows.
Run the uninstaller, then reboot your operating system.
Then you can run the Flash installer, with Firefox closed, of course.
''Note, if you still use IE you'll need to reinstall the ActiveX version of Flash for IE. That uninstaller removes all versions of Flash that might be installed,''

  • I'm having problem with my iphone4S first when i updated software to 7.1 after a month or so wifi turned grayed, second when i tried to turn off in the night as soon as i turn it on battery empty now its totaly dead. What should i do with it?

I'm having problem with my iphone4S first when i updated software to 7.1 after a month or so wifi turned grayed, second when i tried to turn off in the night as soon as i turn it on battery empty now its totaly dead. What should i do with it?

    1) This is because of software version 1.1. See this
thread for some options as to how to go back to 1.0,
    which will correct the problem...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=3754
    59&tstart=0
    2) This tends to happen after videos. Give the iPod a
minute or two to readjust. It should now be more
    accurate.
    3) This?
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation
    point
    4) Restore the iPod
    5) Try these...
iPod Only Shows An Apple Logo and Will Not Start
    Up
iPod Only Shows An Apple Logo
I think 3,4, and 5 are related. Try the options I
    posted for each one.
    btabz
I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again

  • Running a Mac G3, having been using a Laserwriter Select 360, but it and two others are now dead. What is the next best or better printer to use?

I am running a desktop beige Mac G3 and have been using a Laserwriter Select 360, but it an two others are now dead.
What is an equal or better printer to use with the Mac?

Hey, BD, I looked at Brothers last night in connection to this questiona and it looks like their newest/current laser print-only units go back to 10.4 but no further.
Brother is the best hope but the OP may need to look for an older model still in stock. For example, for our older Brother HL5250DN, they still show OS9 drivers:
    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?r eg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl5250dn_all
Gary, web-check for stores that still have older models on teh shelf. You can also look at "newer-but-not-new" and then use the Brother site to check for OS9 drivers.
Founds some of my model on eBay:
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Brother+HL-5250DN
We paid US$199 for ours new about seven years ago. It's been a real workhorse and trouble-free. Well, except for the time my wife tried to feed it a odd paper stock that was not on the printer's official diet!
A Beige G3 consideration: The Big Beige doesn't come with USB ports. You must add a PCI USB adaptor card, and the ones that worked in the Beige are harder to find today.
However, the Beige has built-in ethernet so if you get a printer with an ethernet connector, you will be in bisiness with neither the expense of an extra adaptor card nor the occasional buttheadedness of USB printing. The "N" in our Brother model designates it as a network printer so it has an ethernet port. Many others do also.

Hello, Edward and thank you for your note.
I read through the thread you mentioned and it seems that people are having a lot of problems with the iCloud clients, so we're not alone, but the unique issue in my case is the failing email address vs. the working perfectly email address.
After reading your message tonight, I tried my setup again with the preferred Apple ID (the one without the "." between the names), and for the first time ever, IT WORKS. Mail app configured the servers both send and receive as p01-smtp.mail.me.com and p01-imap.mail.me.com. For the first time, I'm able to send and receive into the Mail app, create mailboxes, move messages into and out of mailboxes, keep Sent messages, etc.
I had a 50-minute support chat with MobileMe support via ExpressLane on Monday afternoon. They couldn't resolve my issue but passed me on to escalation. I was told to expect to get an email from advanced support by this afternoon, but none has arrived. However, so far tonight -- and I will check again tomorrow several times before declaring victory -- it looks like something has been fixed on the Apple end to make things work.
I will report back after I do some additional testing tomorrow to make sure the fix is real and is solid...and before I let my friend, the new Mac user, know the good news.
    Regards,
    Mike
