Ah. You don't select a program, because it is the program (just like an EXE in Windows). See http://askubuntu.com/questions/221416/how-to-install-adobe-reader-bin-download-from-adobe

  • How to playback sound and video in Adobe Reader in Linux?

Hi one of the killer features of Adobe Acrobat is the ability to embed multimedia content in .PDF documents. (I do hope Adobe extend this functionality).
In Windows Adobe Reader plays these files back just fine (so for example you can make an audio book), but in Linux whenever a .PDF is opened containing multi media content, the application complains that no supported media player is installed.
I have real player installed, as this appears to be the only supported media player - but the acroread executable appears to be unable to find it. (Or at least it seems to not be able to use it). Where exactly is it looking for the executable? (Or is it looking for it at all?
Is there a way to play back embedded media content in PDF documents when using Linux?
    I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.

    Hello,
If you would like to be a part of the pre-release program for the next release of Adobe Reader on Unix, please contact Anupam Garg (agarg at adobe dot com), the Program Manager for this project.

  • Adobe Reader 9 Linux GUI problems

    Hi!
I've been using Linux Mint 8 since October 2009. Before that I was using Debian Lenny. I'm trying to use Adobe Reader 9.3 for working with multiple pdf documents. I've run into some problems that didn't seem to exist when I was using it on Lenny (although it was also using Adobe Reader 9.1, so I'm not sure where the problem lies). Here are the problems...
If I have a large number of pdf's open in tabs, I can view one, but to print, I have to click once somewhere in the toolbar before the print button works - essentially I have to click twice to activate the print button. After that, I cannot activate another tab until I first click somewhere on the document window. Between all these clicks, the mouse pointer is switching back and forth between the nice and smooth Linux mouse pointer, and the ugly and pixelly pointer that Reader uses for some reason. Finally, if I have more tabs open than fit in the width of the window, clicking on the left or right arrows that scroll the tabs scrolls all the way to the very last or very first tab. It will not just move over by one tab. If there is a really, really long list of tabs, I cannot get to the ones in the middle.
Anyone have a solution for this? I cannot use Evince or other Linux-based pdf viewers due to the startling lack of tab support (really should be a common thing by now, in my opinion). I just don't want to have to juggle tons of windows.
    Thanks!

I am not fully familiar with Mint, but it is based on Ubuntu ..
Update to the latest version of Adobe Reader, and re-check these issues.
    TO UPDATE
Check in Synaptic that the 'partner' software repository is enabled.
    At terminal type:
    (if required) update your system
    ~:   sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade  <Enter>
install latest Acrobat Reader (for Ubuntu Linux), AND font packs
    ~:   sudo apt-get install acroread acroread-fonts  <Enter>
Then look for Adobe Reader in the applications menu (top left of screen).

    Thank you for your response.
Actually, where is the border when the software can be used lawfully? If software access and usage is allowed only for registered readers (compare to employees of an company or students of an school)?
If it makes things better, will be problem in concurrent access? The license mentions NFS and Windows terminal service. In general NFS is equivalent to CIFS, Windows terminal service is equivalent to X11 terminal service on UNIX.
In other words, is possible to provide Adobe Reader to public library readers? Or should I asked Adobe for special licensing?
Just for your information, in country where I live were havilly discussed problem about installing legal MS Office in Internet coffee houses. It influences in special licensing from site of Microsoft. In fact software usage in public library from point of view of our law is the same case as internet coffee house. The only difference is that nobody cares about it nowadays. I'd like to have all software licenses in order. Therefore I'd like to know if and how can I provide Adobe Reader of Flash Player to our readers, or If I should replace them with alternative free sofware.

I didnt't say that our business is using Linux Desktops. I wrote, our main clientele is. And what our customers do like to use is something we cannot control...
    >What difference does it make to you if Adobe releases a new version of Reader that is not supported on Linux?
a new Adobe Reader version that's supported on Linux would be nice. a dialogue between Adobe and Linux developers would be nice...
    >As long as the old versions can open the files correctly, that's all that matters, no?
No, not if our staff is trained to use the newest Adobe Acrobat (trainings are usually for the newest versions) and uses that to produce forms. Now the files open correctly. But what will be in some months or years? Do people working on Linux do have to print the forms then again to fill in?
So do you recommend that we stop the process of producing electronic forms and stay with paper-fill-in forms? Is that the goal of Adobe? (maybe not so clever for your "financial viability"?!?!? ... ein schuss ins eigene bein?!?!)
    >Adobe is a public company and therefore it's not going to maintain a version of its software at great cost if it's not financially viable. It's as simple as that...
So it is to be interpreted that Adobe is interested in killing Linux cause if users cannot work with let's say forms, they will have to switch to something that can do that for them...
We definitely don't want to force Windows or Mac on our clientele. So as far as I get it, we will go back to paper forms and terminate our licence agreements with Adobe and deinstall it...

  • How do I put Adobe reader on linux

How do I install Adobe Reader on a my chrombook? I also have Linux installed on it as well. But I can't seem to find a download for either.

The latest version of Reader available for Unix was 9.5.5, and you can get it here: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/
As mentioned, the support has been dropped since then so the newer versions are not available.

  • Adobe Reader for Linux 64bits

We would be greatly interested in a amd64 version for Debian and I coud'ant find Adobe Reader for download.
May I dream with this package?
Nós utilizamos Debian 64bits (amd64) em nossas estações e gostaríamos de poder contar com o Adobe Reader.
Podemos aguardar a liberação deste pacote, ou a Adobe não pretende produzir uma versão para estes S.O. ?

    Hello Sousa,
64-bit native version of Acroread is currently not available (see point 6 in the FAQs page http://blogs.adobe.com/acroread/2007/09/adobe_reader_811_faqs.html). We will let the user community know if in case there's such a plan in the future.
    Thanks for your query.

  • Launching programs from adobe reader on linux/unix

I am hoping someone has solved this problem before:
We use pdf for our product manuals and have a large set of examples that we want to allow the user to open by clicking a button. In past releases (pre 8.0 et al) we have not had a problem opening things and we still don't on windows but now, whenever we click on our open buttons we get text of the file in a browser and can not seem to change this behavior.
I have modified Nautilus and konqueror such that double clicking on our files open the application but this does not change the behavior.
Prior to this we were using a script - open script results in launching our application on said example file.
How can we recover this behavior for our users? it makes our example manuals all but useless on Linux/Unix.
    Thanks!
    Dan F.

    Hi,
Can you please share the PDF file so we can investigate the issue? You can email it to gaurav at adobe dot com.
    Thanks,
