Adobe Reader is trying to open all my files

I was offered the option to Open Files With and somehow I chose adobe reader.... Now all my shortucts and programs have a .lnk extension and I cannot open them.
How can I undo and rever to the default?

Michael, thanks for the link.
First let me mention that I uninstalled adobe reader and everything went back to normal except - of course - I couldn't open a .pdf file which was not good.
I reinstalled adobe reader hoping that the new install will come clean but once done I was back with the problem.
The link you sent me lists several solutions one of which is to perform a registry fix which I wouldn't attempt because - as it mentions - I could end up with more serious issues.
Another solution it mentions is to set the default program to a web browser, email client... etc.   This is simple to do but could you please explain to me what this will do?  Let's say I set the default program to internet explorer.  Will it stay as the default program forever?  Will it open a word document, or corel draw for example?
Thanks again,

  • Why does adobe reader keep trying to open my XPI files?

Recently when trying to download a .xpi file I accidentally clicked on adobe reader instead of the program I wanted to use to open it, and now it repeatedly tries to use adobe reader to open it no matter what I do, I've looked everywhere and I can't change this. Could you please inform me on how to change what I use to open a file?

You can install such an locally saved extension in Firefox by dragging the file in a Firefox tab or use "Firefox/File > Open File" to install the extension.
There is usually no need to open an xpi file directly.

  • Acrobat 9 tries to open all .zip files

Acrobat 9 tries to open all zip files I attempt to download - not just zipped PDF's. Under folder management, the zip file type is not associated with Acrobat and is not showing with a PDF icon. The zip file will not open in any unzipping program, it just goes to Acrobat.
When I download any zip file I get a message like this:
Acrobat could not open "somefilename.zip" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged.
This happens with every zip file - how do I disassociate Acrobat from all zip file types?

You need to change the file type association in Windows Explorer of the Folders Control Panel.
The easiest way would to use Windows Explorer to find a file with the ".ZIP" file extension and then use the right mouse click to bring up the context menu. You can then select the "Open With..." option, make sure you check the option to set the 'always associate' (it is the only option) and then find WinZip, PKZip, RAR, or what ever program you use to open the "ZIP" type file.

I have a user on Adobe Reader X.  whenever they open a .pdf file, the form fields do not auto-fill until you click in the box.  Is there a setting that can be changed to make the form open properly?

Sounds like the form fields were filled in on a Mac using Mac Preview. This cannot be fixed in Reader only Acrobat. Ask the person who filled in the form to redo their work in Adobe Reader.

  • How do i make adobe reader my default to open any pdf file

how do i make adobe reader my default to open any pdf file?

What is your current default?  If Adobe Acrobat (X or XI), you can set it in your preferences.
If it's another program, reinstalling or repairing Adobe Reader will set it to the default program.

  • Adober Reader suddenly won't open any PDF files (Mac)

I had an old version, I downloaded the latest one, upgraded to the newest, even tried taking that one out and downloading an older version. It doesn't matter which version I seem to have, it won't open any pdf files from the web.
I use a Mac, and Safari. It used to always load PDF files fine, one random place said I had to update it so I did and since then, lately it'd crash and close all Safari windows when loading a PDF or trying to copy something from a PDF. The smart Mac message I have says it could be related to an Adobe Plug in. However, now it won't even load PDF files at all, it always goes to a white page. Nothing happens.
What do I do?? I can't even save the PDF's as individual files and view then in Preview as an alternative option. It's a link online and normally would work. What happened??
    HELP!
    I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
I've always used Safari, it's Version 5.0.5 (5533.21.1 if that means anything).
Acrobat Reader, currently an old version 9.4.0 download. BUT, I had also the 10.0.1 version which also doesn't work. When I had that 10.0.1 version and checked for updates, there was an update (.3 I think?) and I did that and that also doesn't work!
Why did it suddenly stop working?
What can I do to fix it ASAP?
Only with 9.4.0 version I can go to Help and "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" - I click that and the only box I can select is "Adobe PDFViewer Safari Plugin - View, fill-in and collaborate on Adobe PDFs within Safari"  - I click continue and it tells me there's "No missing components detected. Repairs are not needed." The only option is to click "OK".
With any newer version of Adobe Reader, under Help there is no option to "Repair Adobe Reader Installation". So... I can't even try that with a new version.
I am at a loss for solutions. Hope someone here can help! Thanks!

There are several things you can do. My first step would be to repair permissions. If that doesn't work log on as a different user. If all works properly then you have a corrupt preference file (most likely) or a corrupt user font installed in your user Library (less likely). If that doesn't work download Applejack. Have it repair the disk, remove all system caches and user caches. Then have it check all system and user preference files. Remove any preference files that are corrupt. Reboot and see if your system is working properly.

    tom
    this seems to work:
open acrobat by holding the shift key
    clear history
    close acrobat
    open acrobat again
Thanks Tom for this!  I am glad I found this thread.
I installed Acrobat Pro 9 two weeks ago, and used it fine.
This morning, logged in, automatically started installing updates.
Then, opening a file in Acrobat, it opened the four I used yesterday.
Some of them are pretty big, and when I tried to close then, it crashed.
I tried to delete history, and then open them.
    But, following your advice, I:
    Opened Acrobat
    Deleted history
    Closed Acrobat
    Opened Acrobat
    Opened file in Acrobat
Seems to be working okay now.  Thanks!
Still, seems to me that the latest update installment may have a bug.

  • Adobe Reader 8 will not open any pdf files.

I have a Mac OS X G5. I have Adobe Reader 8 installed. I cannot open any pdf files. It has never worked since installing it. I tried going to File> Open with> Adobe Reader> I get an error that says: the file could not be opened because the file is either not supported or it has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly coded). This error occurs no matter where I get the file; email or web page.
    Any thoughts? Thanks.

I did get around this problem by trashing Reader 8 and confirming that I still had Reader 7.05 installed

  • No option in adobe reader 9.2 when opening a pdf file to "save as" a tiff file

Hi, I want to save a pdf file as a tiff file.  I have Adobe Reader 9.2 and windows xp.  In the Adobe website, it says I can export or convert a pdf file into different formats.  However, when opening an existing pdf file, there isn't an option to export or "save as" in the Tools menu or in the Preferences under Edit.  The reason I want to save a pdf file into a tiff file format is because when I use the program Microsoft Office Document Imaging to open a tiff file, it allows me the option to move selected pages & save it as a new file.  In a pdf file, I have to save all the pages as one file & I don't necessarily want all the pages.   My only other option is to print the selected pages I want from the adobe file document and then scan it into a tiff file but I would hate to use paper just for that purpose.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

You can use a tiff printer driver:

  • Adobe Reader XI will not open any PDF file

I have tried removing and reloading reader.  I have also tried using the WIndows Control Panel to repair the Adobe file.  Nothing has helped.  I cannot open Adobe Reader XI directly from the programs folder.  Nor will it open any PDF file when I double click the file.  I am running WIndows XP.

    Some other things to try...
    Update to Reader version 11.0.5
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the attached registry script
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Adobe Reader 9 will not open any pdf files

I am running Windows 7 and use Adobe Reder frequently. Never had a problem. Last week, whenver I try to open a PDF file, I get a warning box "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
The only thng that changed recently was a couple large Windows updates... I am always suspect when a large update occurs. I uninstalled the Reader and Download Manager and ree-installed themm. No change in performance.
I checked the registry key - it looks correct based on other posts.
Does anyone have any suggestions what else to try??

I've got the same problem. I'll look forward to solving this on this thread.
It really sucks- I have a ton of pdf files, and can't save them to Documents or send them out of the Adobe file.

  • Cannot download Adobe Reader. Can't open any pdf files

Hi. I am using google chrome as my browser. i tried to download adobe reader. it downloads the .exe file. i try to run it and i save it. (after saying yes to security). But then it doesn't do anything and I can't download any Adobe products. My flash driver was also removed. I tried to install McAfee and it started doing this. Is there a conflict between McAfee and the Adobe reader?

Download the offline installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
    What is "flash driver"?

  • Adobe Reader don't always open instruction pdf files

I have a 27 inch iMac running the latest osx software 10.8.2. and Adobe Reader 10.1.4. Often when I download instruction manuals, such as the one for iDraw, which I purchased from the App Store;  it says the file is corrupt and can't open it. I have experienced this problem with several user manual pdf files. Is there another pdf reader that might be able to open these files. I don't mind paying for the software if it will work. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Adobe reader not able to open links to files on FTP sites (10.1.3)

    Hi,
After the recent Reader upgrade to 10.1.3, we are no longer to use the existing documentation that has hyperlinks to our company FTP site.
The document is published using Adobe Acrobat 9.5.1, and the staff open the document using Reader 10.1.3.
In reader when they click on the hyperlinks to the FTP files, the following error is shown:
'Could not open the file: 'ftp://******(doc name)****.zip'
    In Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended - when you click on the hyperlinks you get this error;
'This file is set to be launched by this PDF file. This is currently disallowed by your system administrator'
Can someone please let me know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hi Pat,
    Thanks for the reply.
I'm confused at why this worked in March 2012, but not now (May 2012).
Previously having a hyperlink in a document to download a ZIP file from a FTP site worked.
I did take a look at forum you listed, but I couldn't work out how the document could help me to fix this situation.
