Advantage of DMS over "Services for object" functionality

Hi Experts,
I have got very basic doubt about advantages of DMS Over existing standard functionality of SAP.
We can attach documents or files to SAP Objects using "services for object" push button ( Next to title bar).
So please answer for my below queries
1. What is the disadvantage of using Services for Object??
2. If I use services for object, then file is stored in SAP Data base or in my local drive??
Thanks and Regards,
Kiran T

Hello ,
DMS Vs GOS
DMS- Document Management System
The Document Management System (DMS) in SAP R/3 offers the following distinct advantages over the current procedures and systems.
u2022     It avoids data redundancy, maintains consistency of data and minimizes the workload involved in entering and updating data.
u2022     In order to use large databases to the full, it is required to exchange data quickly and securely.  Data can be accessed directly using electronic search tools, or find documents using known parameters.
u2022     Document distribution functionality  (SAP-Workflow functionality is required)
The SAP R/3 Document Management System meets all these demanding requirements.  In addition to managing documents, it also coordinates document processing.  It is possible to automate the entire life cycle of a document: from document creation to document storage, its access and its update.  Each document can be accessed immediately from any computer on the netwerk.
GOS-
All these DMS advantages are not available with GOS.

  • Service For Objects functionality (SDV transaction)

    Hello experts,
Some users are getting an authorization error while trying to display an image from t-code FBL1N (services for objects). After identifying the reason of this issue with NSU53, the simple fix is to provide access to the user to transaction SDV. Actually, we are proposing to the security team to provide the access in a Generic role, so all user can get the access.
Their concern is that if for any reason, any of the users runs the t-code directly (SDV), and not through the Services for Objects funtionality, they might be able to access other documents that they should not be allowed. To be honest, I haven't seen this as an issue before in my 13 years working with SAP.
The question for you guys is: what is the best approach to grant access to users from different modules to Services for Objects functionality without violating security policies?
    Thanks,
    Alfredo

  • Want to replicate services for object functionality in my z- program

    Hi
I can see the "Services for object functionality" in IW32 transaction. I want to replicate the same functionality for my custom program.
Please let me know if I can get any pointers for this.
    Regards
    Swetabh

    Hi,
check out the program of the iw32 tcode.
then in debugging mode find the code where exactly the requirement is going on with the code of the program.
then copy that code in your custom program and do the needful changes.

  • Difference in storage method for DMS and Services for Object

    Hi-
Our R/3 version is: 4.7 Enterprise.
In most (if not all) of the transactions users execute, there is a feature where they can attach a file using "Services for Object" from their PC to the associated record (i.e. material master, purchase orders, service notifications, etc.)
What I would like to know is where the document is stored.  From what I found on help.sap.com it says that it is a link from the user's PC.  But I would guess it is storing a copy of the file as a blob on the R/3 server somewhere.  Is this true?  Or is there a risk if the user's harddrive dies, that the file is no longer available for viewing?
I am trying to determine the difference between using the Services for Object feature vs. DMS and setting up an object link for the specific object type (i.e. material).
    Thanks!
    -Jenn

I found the following about Services for Objects:
    Business Workplace
The documents that were appended to an object using Create attachment and Create note are stored in the Business Workplace. There, for example, you can make settings for where the documents should be stored (R/3 System or Web Server) and which document classes may be loaded in the SAP System (for example DOC, but not EXE).
Sending is also carried out internally using the Business Workplace. Messages are created that contain a link to the object as an attachment. By double-clicking on the attachment, the users can call the default method of the object. This is normally the display method.

  • Service For Objects Function/Button in BP - missing when performing BDC?

    Hi all,
I'm currently working on a conversion program that creates Business Partners in the transaction BP by using CALL TRANSACTION. The first thing I did was to record the transaction in SHDB. My problem is, the Services for Object button is missing while Im recording in SHDB. It's also disabled in the menu path
System->Services for Object.  I'm assuming then that it won't be there as well when performing the actual BDC. When using transaction BP online, it does appear though. Is there a way to make this functionality appear while performing BDC?

    Dear Vincent,
Use FM 'SO_DOCUMENT_READ_API1' to retrieve the document.
Reward points if it is helpful.

  • Transfering Documents (mostly .jpg) from Services for Object to DMS

    Hi,
We are presently in the process of finalizing document attachments via DMS system. We still have a high quantity of documents that were attached through the "Services for object" function (mostly .jpg ) and would like to transfer these to DMS without having to export them for every single object (mostly equipments). Is there any way to do this i.e. mass export of these attachments with their link (ex. at the top of the dialog box: AttachmentFor0000000...) so that they remain .jpg to be able to re-upload quickly in DMS system ?
    Thanks for your help !

we have in the current system merger project a developer from SAP who is programming this feature for us, so I am pretty certain that there is nothing in standard that can do this job.

  • Retrieval of attachments with services for object in ME22n or ME23n

    Hello experts,
I have a MM requirement where the user attaches some document in ME22n or ME23n via services for object functionality to a particular PO. Here the user wants to attach this document during sending of mail with ME9F to the vendor. First of all is it possible with the standard functionality of ME9F? or Requires some Zdevelopment. Anyone can guide me how to extract the attachment and send it with mail, does it require some configuration from functional side? I searched the forums but did not find the ways to extract.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Raj (SAP ABAP)

    Hi Raj,
Did you find a way to extract the attachment?

  • Services for object for a custom document

    Hi everyone,
We have a custom transaction to create a custom document called enquiry. Upon saving, the document number will be generated and stored in a table. I would like to add the functionality of Services for Object in the transaction to be able to attach documents to the enquiry. I would like to ask if it is possible to create a business object for this custom document to be able to utilize the Services for Object functionality.
    Thanks!
    Eric

you can choose to create BO for this or simply have a another identifier for this object and youc an use class OT to upload documents to BDS.
all you need is call of this FM whicih will automatically put the icon for GOS
    SWU_OBJECT_PUBLISH
alternatively you can use class cl_gos_manager

  • Attachments with services for object in ME42 along with RFQ via 'ME9A'  .

    Hello Guys,
I have a MM requirement where the user attaches some document in ME42  via services for object functionality to a particular RFQ. Here the user wants to attach this document during sending of mail with ME9A to the vendor.
As by SAP standards we are only able to send RFQ in PDF format to vendors.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
You can attach an attachment to RFQ IN ME9Avia E-mail. Communication strategy need to define in CS01. E-mail address need to maintain in vendor master record. Codition records need to maintain in NACE or IN mn04. Use sap note  191470. This is for PO, the same can be used for RFQ. Please refer below link for step by step assistance. Thanking you.
RFQ send by mail through SAP server

  • Services for object using cl_gos_manager

    Hello All,
I have a selection screen with material no as a parameter. After I execute the screen I get some details for that material. I want to replicate "Services for object" functionality as in ME23N in my Program. I am able to add attachments using cl_gos_manager. But when I add a document to a material I am able to see the attachment with all the materials.
    I have created a object using SWO1.
Then I have created an object for the class cl_gos_manager.
How do I make the attachments material specific.
    Thanking you all in anticipation.
    Regards,
    Anju

Are you setting a unique object key for each material and passing it to the method when you create the attachment?
